2010 New York Comic-Con, Day 1

Posted: 09 Oct 2010 02:19 PM PDT

Over the Summer, comic book fans flocked to San Diego Comic-Con to get their fix of geekness and now they have made their way to the Big Apple for another dose of geeky awesomeness. Here are a few photos from Day 1 of 2010 New York Comic-Con:

Altho all the really BIG geek news comes out of SDCC in July, I’m certain that NYCC will offer fans much to talk about. As you can see from just these photos from Day 1, there are quite a few geek gods to meet and press the flesh with at the convention. Looks like fun, yeah?

Phair, Thee Well

Posted: 09 Oct 2010 02:06 PM PDT

Last night my friend Josh and I made our way out to the El Rey Theatre here in LA to see Liz Phair perform live on her Funstyle Tour which got underway earlier this week:

Liz is currently on tour in support of her new album Funstyle which she released digitally in July and will release on physical CD on October 19. While she performed a few new songs, the lion’s share of the setlist was made up of classic Liz Phair songs that were the delight of every person in attendance. To be honest, it really felt like a Greatest Hits show to me. After the jump, check out some photos that I snapped of the show last night and check out video of two of my fave performances — Divorce Song and Flower

Here is the setlist of songs that Liz performed last night:

Supernova
6’1″
Divorce Song
May Queen
Never Said
Johnny Feelgood
Nashville
And He Slayed Her
Polyester Bride
Perfect World
Mesmerizing
Oh, Bangladesh
Extraordinary
Stratford-on-guy
Fuck And Run

Encore:

Friend Of Mine
White Babies
Why Can’t I?
Flower

Right from the opening strains of Supernova, I knew the show was going to rock. As you can see, Liz only played 2 songs off of Funstyle (And He Slayed Her and Oh, Bangladesh) … the rest of the songs were beloved classics. Here is video that I shot of her performance of Divorce Song:

Here is video that I shot of her performance of Flower:

Liz sounded amazing, she looked amazing and I am SO excited that she is back on the road. I’m hoping she is planning to tour more extensively in the future … and I really want her to come back to LA to play more shows. She put on such a great show … if Liz Phair is coming to your town, you must see her.

It’s a hot day in LA today … not sure what the plan for this evening is. I might be laying low and keepin’ cool … ah weekends, how I love you so.

‘Blue Valentine’ Releases A First Movie Trailer

Posted: 09 Oct 2010 01:18 PM PDT

Blue Valentine, the film which stars Ryan Gosling and Michelle Williams, has been getting rave film festival reviews but the shadowy Motion Picture Association of America has decided to slap the film with the kiss of death rating of NC-17 … which means many theaters will opt out of showing the film when it gets released this Fall. Here are a few screencaps from the first movie trailer for the film and some deets about the film’s rating:

In a shocking decision, the Motion Picture Association of America has slapped "Blue Valentine" with the dreaded NC-17 rating. The Weinstein Company has high hopes for the drama and has been planning to mount an awards campaign for the Sundance pick-up. “Blue Valentine’s” NC-17 is the latest in a string of controversial decisions by the MPAA ratings board. In the last few months, it handed out R ratings to two award-winning documentaries — “The Tillman Story” and “A Film Unfinished.” Both lost their appeals. Starring Ryan Gosling and Michelle Williams, the indie film drew strong reviews from critics who hailed its unflinching look at the breakdown of a marriage. Those who have seen the film were surprised by the decision, noting that while the movie contains sex scenes with some nudity, they were not exploitative. The filmmakers now have four options. They can, of course, accept the rating. They can appeal it to a board composed of distributors, exhibitors and industry executives; they can edit the film and resubmit it; or they can release the film unrated. A spokesperson for the studio had no comment, and it was not immediately clear if the filmmakers would make the cuts necessary to earn an R rating or appeal the board's decision. The MPAA would not comment on its reasons for the rating, noting that it maintains a posture of silence on all films until the rating has been accepted.

What really KILLS me about the MPAA is that their decisions are made by a board of unknown people and their rulings aren’t governed by any public entity. Essentially, what they say goes … and that is the end of the discussion. Last week I was able to attend the premiere of the MPAA unrated film Hatchet II … a film that has since been yanked from AMC Theaters after they initially agreed to show the film. I understand some parent’s need to rely on movie ratings but I do NOT agree that those ratings should come from a faceless organization that is free to do whatever they want, completely unfettered. It remains to be seen what will happen to Blue Valentine. Either it will make the necessary cuts to get an R rating or it will stick with the NC-17 rating and get hobbled at the box office. My guess is that the film will get censored … which really rubs me the wrong way. After the jump, check out the trailer for Blue Valentine for your first look at the film …

I’ve been really looking forward to the release of this film for many months … I hope the version I eventually get to see will keep the spirit of the original vision alive.

More Photos From Rihanna’s ‘Only Girl (In The World)’ Music Video

Posted: 09 Oct 2010 12:25 PM PDT

Last week we saw a few photos from the NYC set of Rihanna‘s latest music video What’s My Name? as well as a promo photo from the already finished music video for her single Only Girl (In The World). Today we get to check out a few more promo photo/screencaps from the Only Girl video which has yet to be officially released:

I am really not feelin’ the big red hair. I know it’s the look that Rihanna is really trying to make happen for this new album but it really looks bad. I didn’t hate it so much when I first saw it but … it’s influence has grown on me over the past few weeks … and not in a good way. After the jump, check out a few more photos from Rihanna‘s Only Girl (In The World) music video …

Naturally, these images will take on new life in motion and set to music so I’ll reserve judgment on the vid until it gets released. I think the tone of the album might clue us in as to Rihanna‘s styling choices lately. The album might be a fun, upbeat collection of songs … which might explain Ri Ri‘s attempt at a fun, upbeat look. Still … I’m not loving the all-too-redness of Rihanna‘s look these days. We’ll have to wait and see how it all plays itself out. Is there anyone out there who loves this look at all?

Halle Berry & Olivier Martinez Bring Their Lurve Home To SoCal

Posted: 09 Oct 2010 11:57 AM PDT

First there was the kissin’, then there was the hand-holdin’ … all in Paris, France — the city of lights and love. Today we learn that new lovebirds Halle Berry and Olivier Martinez have imported their lurve from France to put on display here in SoCal. Halle and Olivier showed up here in LA this week lookin’ in love as ever at a photographic art exhibit in West Hollywood, CA:

Their relationship is still in its infancy but Halle Berry and Olivier Martinez are fast becoming inseparable. The loved up pair headed out last night to a photography exhibition at the Marcelita Gallery in West Hollywood. Arriving together, in a classic car driven by Olivier, the pair were affectionate and romantic, holding hands and gazing into each other’s eyes as they browsed the selection and chatted with other patrons. Earlier in the day the couple headed out for a spot of lunch in Los Angeles and Halle appeared very smitten with her new beau. Wearing a white tank with a huge thumbprint on the front, Halle stayed close to the french actor as they walked from the car. They spent time in an office building in Beverly Hills before grabbing some lunch and heading back to Halle’s house in West Hollywood. Martinez flew from France, his home country, to Los Angleles at the beginning of the week to spend time with his new lady.

HMMM … I guess what I initially thought was just a fun, work-fling has grown into something more. It’s one thing to carry on while on location for work … but when you bring your fling back home with you — that’s some seriousness, y’all. Still … I’m not 100% convinced that this relationship will stand the test of time. If we ever get to see photos of Olivier with Halle‘s daughter Nahla Ariela, well, then we can be sure things are on like Donkey Kong. Time will tell … but, thus far, these two are keepin’ the fling very alive.

Bravo Previews The Reunion Special For ‘The Real Housewives Of DC’

Posted: 09 Oct 2010 10:41 AM PDT

This past Thursday Bravo aired the first season finale of The Real Housewives of DC which focused pretty exclusively on the White House Party Crashers Michaele and Tareq Salahi. That ep alone contained all of the real drama that was pretty much missing from the entire season. Next Thursday, Bravo will air part 1 of 2-part reunion special that will pit the ladies (and gentlemen) of The Real Housewives of DC against one another to rehash all of the grievances that came out this season:

Today we get to check out a few sneak peeks of the 2-part reunion special which will give us a taste of what to expect. In all honesty, the DC Housewives are the boringest of the bunch … nothing at all really happened and even when it came time to showcase the White House party crashing, everything we saw was after the fact. The juiciest stuff we saw was rebroadcast footage from C-SPAN of the Salahi‘s appearance before a Congressional committee investigating their party crashing. Still, I watched the entire season and there ain’t no way I’m missing the reunion special. After the jump, check out 3 clips from the special in preparation of the coming reunion special …

I’m so grossed out by the Salahis who, to me, seem like a grown-up and just as sad incarnation of Speidi. While their annoying behavior was minorly entertaining for a minute, I’m so not interested in watching them scramble for fame should they be asked back for a second season of The Real Housewives of DC. I must admit, tho, that I am looking forward to seeing the exchange between all the DC folk in this reunion special. The Drama is gonna hit the fan … I hope it’s worth paying attention to.
