Movie Review: ‘Hanna’

Posted: 09 Apr 2011 12:28 PM PDT

Yesterday afternoon David and I went to the earliest showing of Hanna that we were able to see because we have both been looking forward to seeing this movie for a very long time. I knew that I would love Hanna the very first time I saw the trailer a few months ago. I am happy to report that I was not disappointed in the least. Hanna is full of beautifully shot action scenes and tells a tale that is exciting from the start. Saoirse Ronan is the best part of this film but her co-stars Cate Blanchett and Eric Bana are pretty good, too. If you’re lookin’ for an action-packed thrill ride at the movies this weekend, then Hanna is your ticket!

I had no doubt in my mind that the actors would give great performances but I wasn’t really prepared for how beautifully shot the film would be. Action films don’t have to bash you over the head to have an impact … they can offer some semblance of subtlety and still entertain. The thing I love most about Hanna is that the action hero is female … and not just female but a young female. Hanna kicks ass. And despite the PG-13 rating, there are a lot of violent action scenes that will feed any action fan’s thirst for excitement. The writing is really fantastic and the characters are well fleshed out. Keep an eye out for actress Jessica Barden (who plays Sophie) because she is a brilliant scene-stealer. She talks fast to try and pay attention to the hilarious things she says … she gives a great performance in this film. By the end of the film, I wasn’t sure if I wanted the ending to be left open for a sequel or not. Obviously, I’d love to see Hanna have more adventures in the future … but this film was so perfectly book-ended that I’d also be happy if no other sequels were made. Some of the action takes place in Berlin, Germany and because David and I were just there and fell so in love with the city, the setting was a nice treat. I think Hanna is my fave film of the year thus far. The character Hanna is, by far, the coolest chick in film that I’ve seen in some time. Oh and did I mention how freaking incredible the soundtrack by Chemical Brothers is? There wasn’t a single thing about this film that I didn’t like. A+++ Hanna is amazing! But don’t take my word for it, check it out and you’ll see for yourselves.

Jude Law Takes The Kids On A Beachy Playdate

Posted: 09 Apr 2011 12:15 PM PDT

Jude Law, who has been flying solo romantically for the past few weeks since his sad break-up with girlfriend Sienna Miller, spent some beach time with his children — Rafferty, Iris and Rudy — in Malibu, CA this weekend. The Law family got in some great bonding time together in the warm SoCal sun … check out their cute photos below.

As bummed as I am that Jude and Sienna didn’t work out, I am glad to see that Jude‘s kids are keeping his mind off his heartbreak. I cannot believe how big Jude‘s oldest son Rafferty has grown … he’s about the same size as Jude is! Tho, Jude is kind of a small man so … yeah. These photos are fun … especially because Jude seems to take great pleasure in spending time with his children. So cute!!

Dancing NOT On My Own

Posted: 09 Apr 2011 12:04 PM PDT

Yesterday was a pretty fun day for me … a late afternoon movie preceded a surprise concert performance by Robyn which preceded a late night bar hang … and I didn’t even get hungover! Score!! My Friday was very long, very fun and full of very amazing friends. Check out some photos below from my fabulously fun Friday night.

David and I saw an early showing of the new movie Hanna (review forthcoming) and then had to be home right after so I could change and meet up with Darion at PopStarz for a surprise live performance by Robyn! The show was totally hush hush but D managed to get us the hook-up and we were able to get up close and almost personal with Robyn herself:

Altho she only played a short 4 song set, it was much more than anyone was anticipating. Here is video of her fun performance of her new hit song Dancing On My Own:

I got to meet a bunch of Darion’s friends, including the fabulous Nicole (who I think is gonna be a new BFF for me, actually). We all had a total blast together last night:

After the show (and wee bit of dancing), I met up with Josh Z. in Culver City for some beer drinkin’ fun at the Backstage Bar. It was karaoke night and altho we did not indulge the crowd with our inability to sing, we did manage to find a photobooth in the corner of the bar so we could take some fun snaps:

It’s crazy … I guess I never noticed how many photobooths are still in operation around LA. I have a rule that if I do find a photobooth (the real kind, not the crappy digital kind) then I MUST take a photo. Josh had to be cajoled into posing for the camera but he ended up loving it.

I had big plans for this afternoon … but now I’m not sure if they’re gonna pan out. It’s sunny, bright and beautiful so I’m gonna be outside one way or the other. Happy Saturday, y’all!! Have a great weekend!!

Amanda Seyfried & Ryan Phillippe Take Their Lurve Affair To London

Posted: 09 Apr 2011 11:24 AM PDT

Earlier this week we saw photos of lovebirds Amanda Seyfried and Ryan Phillippe enjoying a touristy date together in the romantic city of Paris, France. Today we learn that the couple have made their way to London, England to carry on their love affair. Actually, the pair are in Europe promoting their new films Red Riding Hood (Amanda) and The Lincoln Lawyer (Ryan) but … if they can squeeze in a holiday in between promo events then it’s all good. Last night, Amanda and Ryan hit the streets of London … but, apparently, they weren’t too keen on being seen.

LOL. I never understand the celebs who think they avoid embarrassing paparazzi photos with a jacket over their head … IMHO, they just end up looking sillier than if they just didn’t pay attention to the cameras at all. Ryan‘s a veteran pro, he should know better … but I digress. The couple were in France for Ryan‘s promo events and now they are in London for Amanda‘s … it really looks like these two have got the complications of their careers synced up pretty brilliantly. I’m not sure if these two will really stand the test of time together as a couple but, thus far, they are really makin’ it work.

Michael Jackson Dangles His Baby Out A Window In London

Posted: 09 Apr 2011 11:05 AM PDT

Back in 2002, the late Michael Jackson infamously dangled his baby son Prince Michael Joseph Jackson, II (aka Blanket) out of a window in Berlin, Germany … and this week, an artwork tribute to that moment in pop culture went on display in London. Apparently, some MJ fans are non-too-pleased by the sculpture tribute, titled Madonna and Child, because death threats have been made against the LA-based artist Maria von Kohler. Check out photos of the sculpture and deets about the threats below.

It’s like looking at a man in the mirror. But a new statue depicting the heart-stopping moment Michael Jackson dangled his nine-month-old son from a fifth-floor Berlin hotel balcony has sparked outrage from his fans. The London music studio where the life-size sculpture of the late king of pop with baby Prince Michael II is on display has become the target of hate mail and death threats … The latest statue, called Madonna and Child, is the work of Los Angeles-based artist Maria von Kohler, and can be seen 20 feet up on the side of Premises Studios, in Hackney Road, East London. A barrage of angry messages have been posted on the company’s website, with one Michael Jackson fan even threatening to set the studios on fire. Daniela Hairabedian wrote: ‘This sculpture is a disgrace. Instead of honoring Michael Jackson for his many contributions to the music industry, you chose to ridicule him in this manner. ‘For your information, MJ was not dangling his baby, but showing the baby to his fans who asked to see the baby. I urge you to remove this sculpture and replace it with one that honors Michael Jackson’s amazing talents and humanitarian accomplishments.’ Another fan calling herself krazy4kitties wrote: ‘This is disgraceful. What kind of person would do a thing like this? It is based on a 3 second incident that happened years ago. MJ said that although he was holding his child firmly, it was a mistake. Think of how it makes his child feel to have this horrid ‘sculpture’ on display. Why don’t you look at yourself in the mirror and ask yourself why you did such a thing.’ But Viv Broughton, chief executive of The Premises Studios, said the artwork would not be taken down. ‘How can a work of art that’s faithful to a real event be construed as an attack on anyone?’ she said. ‘Madonna and Child is as much about extreme fan worship as it is about Michael Jackson. Lots of people have come here to view it. Most people think it’s brilliant.’ Swedish-born von Kohler, who is a former Royal Academy of Arts student, took six months creating the sculpture. First it was modelled in clay, then, using a plaster mould it was cast in polyester resin and finished in acrylic and wax. It will be on display at Premises Studios until May 1, when it moves to Los Angeles.

I will never understand the mentality of threatening violence or death against a piece of art that someone doesn’t like … it is absolute insanity that anyone would get so upset over something like this … but I digress. Without question, the MJ Baby Dangling incident is an unforgettable moment in pop culture history that will not go away. I, personally, think the statue is clever … and very lifelike. I am glad to hear that it is coming to LA because I’d love to see this statue tribute in person. What do y’all think? Is this statue tribute to this moment in pop culture history “disgusting” as some detractors claim or is it merely harmless?

Watch: Helen Mirren Gets On All Fours On ‘Late Night With Jimmy Fallon’

Posted: 09 Apr 2011 10:02 AM PDT

Remember last week when we saw photos of Helen Mirren leaving her hand and footprints in the cement in front of Grauman’s Chinese Theater here in Hollywood, CA? Yeah, well Dame Helen made an appearance on Late Night with Jimmy Fallon this week (to promote her upcoming hosting gig on Saturday Night Live tonight) and she shared the experience with Jimmy (and his entire television audience) by getting down on her hands and knees to show exactly what the honor required of her. Check out the video below.

After an Oscar and a Damehood, Helen Mirren thought she had already experience the biggest highlights of her career. But that was before she was required to get down on all fours in front of the world’s press and hundreds of fans during her handprint ceremony in Hollywood last week. Discussing getting prints of her hands and feet done outside Grauman’s Chinese Theatre, Mirren admitted the uncouth position diminished the honour somewhat. The 65-year-old actress admitted she was slightly embarrassed by having to be photographed in such an informal position. She compared the moment last month to when she won an Oscar in 2006 and became a Dame in 2003. Speaking on U.S. chat show Late Night With Jimmy Fallon last night, she said: ‘When I got my dame of the British Empire, you go to Buckingham Palace. I got Prince Charles, not the Queen, but there were the Gurkha soldiers, there’s a military band playing. Everyone’s all dressed up and it’s all very formal, you learn how to curtsy and it’s all very, very formal. Then the next big one, I win the Oscar. I’m standing on the stage in front of all these Hollywood stars holding my Oscar in my hand and they’re all applauding and it’s this incredible dream come true … And now I have my hands and feet down on Hollywood Boulevard and it’ll be there forever and this is what you have to do…’ Mirren then went down on all fours to recreate her pose in front of the Grauman’s Chinese Theatre, prompting laughter from Fallon and the audience. During her interview, she also admitted she didn’t know when Prince William was marrying Kate Middleton. She said: ‘I’m not even quite sure when it is. Is it soon? Is it next week? I wasn’t invited. I tried bribing people, I even tried finding a way in over the back of the Abbey. I’ve even tried to get myself an Archbishop of Canterbury outfit because I thought I might kidnap him and do the actual ceremony because I do a lot of these gender-bending roles.’

This woman is the QUEEN! I just love her. She is amazing in both serious roles and comedic roles … and she looks pretty good on all fours, I gotta say. I am SO looking forward to seeing Helen on SNL tonight. She’s gonna kill it … no question. Ain’t she just fab? Love her!!

Celebrity Feud: Betty White Vs. Lindsay Lohan

Posted: 09 Apr 2011 09:14 AM PDT

In our WTF? news of the day, a new celebrity feud appears to have broken out this week … between esteemed Golden Girl Betty White and raging trainwreck Lindsay Lohan. This week, Betty spoke to The Daily Mail and offered her honest opinion of the embarrassingly messy behavior by both Charlie Sheen and Lindsay Lohan. Lindsay, apparently, didn’t take too kindly to Betty‘s opinion of her and had to speak out publicly about her displeasure. It sounds like it’s Team Betty vs. Team Lindsay … whose team are YOU on?

Getting slammed by the nicest “Golden Girl” has got to feel pretty weird. “Wow,” Lindsay Lohan said exclusively to E! News in response to Betty White telling London’s Daily Mail that she “cannot stand” celebs like Lohan and Charlie Sheen. “I’ve always been a fan of hers,” Lohan continued. “It’s just a bit strange when people feel they must speak publicly about others. Especially a grown woman.” Ooh…burn? No, not really. Lohan genuinely seemed rather perplexed by why White seemingly name-checked her out of nowhere. White’s comments, according to the Mail’s article, appeared to come after she was asked her opinion about “today’s celebrities.” “They party too much, don’t learn their lines, are unprofessional and they grumble about everything,” the Emmy winner said (supposedly with “eyes flashing,” per the report). “I think they are terribly ungrateful. I cannot stand the people who get wonderful starts in show business, and who abuse it. Lindsay Lohan and Charlie Sheen, for example, although there are plenty of others, too. They are the most blessed people in the world and they don’t appreciate it.” Seems kind of harsh for the usually more discreet actress, whose insults tend to come out in the form of jokes told at award show podiums. “She is such a wonderful one,” White said at the SAG Awards, referring to her “Proposal” costar, Sandra Bullock. “Isn’t it heartening to see how far a girl as plain as she is can go?” Sheen, surprisingly, has not tweeted or otherwise issued a reaction to White’s comments. Lohan had nothing to say on Sheen’s behalf, but she is apparently a fan, having tweeted yesterday: “‘Youre with a winner, you wont regret this’”-charlie sheen as bud fox in Wall Street (winner-winning!) made me laugh lol.”

Let’s be honest here, first it should be made very clear that The Daily Mail generally exaggerates in their reporting … and to be honest, I wouldn’t at all be surprised if they did not quote Betty properly. But even with that said, nothing that Betty reportedly said is at all derogatory or defamatory. It’s pretty public knowledge and quite arguable that Lindsay, for example, does party too hard, doesn’t learn her lines, is unprofessional and “grumbles” about everything (case in point, this dumb feud). Instead of complaining that Betty White is “speaking publicly” about her, maybe she should take Betty‘s comments to heart. When a Golden Girl puts your irresponsible behavior on blast, girl, GET A CLUE! I don’t expect anything else to come from this feud … but I, for one, am squarely on Team Betty. She merely expressed what we all know to be true.

You go, Betty!!

Charlie Sheen Gets Booed Off Stage In NYC

Posted: 09 Apr 2011 08:49 AM PDT

Last weekend, trainwreck Charlie Sheen kicked off his new My Violent Torpedo of Truth / Defeat is Not an Option tour in Detroit, MI and bombed so badly that he was booed off stage by the members of the audience who did not walk out of the show early. Inexplicably, Sheen was treated to a hero’s welcome in Chicago, IL and Cleveland, OH at the subsequent tour stops this week (apparently, there is no accounting for taste). Last night, Sheen took his show to Radio City Music Hall in NYC, NY and was again met with an unappreciative crowd. Apparently the folks in NYC, like the folks in Detroit, know when they are being had … so after booing him, Sheen quit the show early and bolted for the door.

Charlie Sheen’s stage show in the Big Apple turned sour last night as the tough East Coast crowd gave him a mixed review. The Two and a Half Men star sauntered onto the stage at Radio City Musical Hall wearing a New York Yankees hat and shirt. But even his patriotic clothing did not help him as the tough crowd only gave him a semi-standing ovation when he appeared on the latest leg of his Torpedo Of Truth tour. The crowd were initially supportive of Sheen but bizarrely booed him when he said he had quit drugs. As he was trying to talk during his question and answer session, he was jeered by a large section of the crowd, which he obviously found disconcerting. Security had thrown out a few noisy hecklers early on, but plenty still remained. His stage show was very similar to the previous ones in Detroit and Chicago but tonight’s gig finished about 30 minutes, according to TMZ. It was a shorter than he did in Ohio and ended to a mixture of boos and cheers. He was joined by his goddesses who still seem happy to be riding the Sheen train. At the end of his performance the 45-year-old said sarcastically: ‘I love you New York… you’re the best crowd ever. Well, some of you’. As he left the concert venue, Sheen arrogantly waved a peace sign despite having bombed on stage.

UGH. It sounds like the only people going out to see Charlie Sheen on tour are fans who are expecting an entertaining show (and are met with a mess of a spectacle that they obviously don’t enjoy) and enablers who love fueling Sheen‘s insane antics. Whether he bombs or gives the crowd what they want, Sheen is laughing all the way to the bank (because homie has already been WELL PAID no matter what happens on the performance stage). In the end, the joke is on the people who IMHO made the mistake of funding this mess. After it’s all said and done, I find it hard to believe that Sheen will be able to go on a tour like this again … but he does still have some support from his enabling fans so … this might not be the end. OY!
