Crushable Quotable: James McAvoy Is Scottish. And Still Knows Kilts Are Dumb

Posted: 12 Feb 2011 06:37 AM PST

James McAvoy, the adorable Scottish actor, is in Robert Redford’s new movie The Conspirator, and talked to PopEater this week about various things that have happened in his life. (Like the fact that he’s fine with the fact that Angelina Jolie emasculated him in the movie Wanted.)

But the thing I most appreciated was his take on kilts. As he comes from the land of kilts, he is technically allowed to wear one without coming off as a total jackass. But that’s easier said than done:

“When I’m at home [in Scotland], I never wear a kilt. I’d probably get mugged; I’d probably get absolutely torn to pieces. Every now and then, if Scotland’s football team is playing an international match, I’ll put my kilt on. I have worn my kilt once walking around my home in London, and I went through a period of about two days where I went, “Yeah, I’m Scottish, I can wear my kilt wherever I like.” I asked a friend of mine, “What do you think?” and he said, “Well you look like a dick.” So I stopped wearing my kilt.

That might be the most honest thing I’ve ever heard about kilts.

Crushable Bids Adieu To Deputy Editor Drew Grant

Posted: 11 Feb 2011 01:33 PM PST

Ladies (and gents?). It is a sad day for Crushable. Our deputy editor Drew Grant is leaving us. Starting Monday, she’ll be blogging wonderfulness over at Salon. That is good news for them. And bad news for us. Where would we be without Bret Easton Ellis’ version of The Babysitter’s Club or a day in the life of the Manic Pixie Dream Girl?

In order to properly express my displeasure with her departure, I informed Drew of two mandates*:

  1. She has to come see Justin Bieber’s Never Say Never with us.
  2. She has to make her own farewell video.

Drew obliged on both counts. And we are all better for it.

*I’m going to miss abusing my power over Drew in this way.

Janet Jackson's Memoir Reminds World Why It's Better To Not Be A Jackson

Posted: 11 Feb 2011 12:44 PM PST

Michael Jackson and his brothers and sisters had the gift of fame at a very young age. But they also had the non-gift of a very abusive family that was apparently unconcerned with child labor laws. And in case anyone was wondering how those kids went from adorable singing Jackson Fives to mentally unstable plastic surgery lovers, Janet Jackson is here to remind us of that causal link.

The singer is doing a press tour for her new memoir True You, and it promises to reveal lots of dirt from her childhood. Like this realization she had early on:

“The message was also clear — to be successful, I had to change the way I looked.”

She told Meredith Viera on The Today Show this morning that she so ugly, until her 30s. Why? Because she was under intense stress all the time. Having a father who refuses to let you call him Dad could do that to you. Here’s the extended quote from above out of True You:

“In 1977, at age ten, I was cast on the TV sitcom “Good Times.” My character was Penny, an abused child in desperate need of love. I really didn't want to do the show. I didn't want to be away from my family. And being on television only added to my negative feelings about my body.

Before production began, I was told two things: I was fat and needed to slim down, and because I was beginning to develop, I needed to bind my breasts. In both cases the message was devastating — my body was wrong. The message was also clear — to be successful, I had to change the way I looked.”

Although you can never expect a celebrity to be entirely honest in a memoir, it sounds like there will be a lot of interesting info in the book. Writes Janet:

“Had there been a book that told me I wasn't alone — that millions of men, women, and children are confused about self-image — I would have been grateful. That kind of book could have made a difference in my life.

I want this book to make a difference.

It's important that I present myself just as I am. So I must tell you right away that I'm no expert. I have no psychic powers and I sure don't possess any secret wisdom. I'm just Janet. I have strengths, weaknesses, fears, happiness, sadness. I experience joy and I experience pain. I'm highly emotional. I'm very vulnerable. And, as anyone who knows me well will testify, I'm extremely sensitive. I have lifelong patterns of behavior that have caused me difficulty — patterns tough to break. Like everyone, I have talents, but with those talents have come challenges.”

Great: After watching this ad we now have this unshakable fantasy about having a tea party with these dozen different Willem Defoe incarnations, except instead of tea, we’d drink bourbon, duh. Crumpets, though. There will still be crumpets.

Your New (Weird) Crush: Nick Offerman With Cornrows

Posted: 11 Feb 2011 12:08 PM PST

For those of you unaware of this fact, let me bring you up to date. My love of Nick Offerman knows no bounds. And last night on Parks And Recreation, we got to see our beloved Ron Swanson behind bars. With cornrows. Did someone at NBC think that this would be funny, and turn away the hoards of young women lusting after NBC’s best libertarian? Ha. Haha… HA! I scoff in the general direction of that proposition.

Nick Offerman looks even hotter in jail, scoffing at us with his perfectly manicured braids juxtaposing that dastardly mustache. Rawr. If that producers at NBC want to play a game of chicken with Nick Offerman role play this season, we have only one thing to say: Bring. It. On.

Questionable Choices: Britney Spears' Early 90s Modeling Portfolio

Posted: 11 Feb 2011 11:50 AM PST

Man, what are these “modeling photos” of Britney Spears that just surfaced? And how did she take them all in one year (1998?) when clearly she goes through multiple hair colors and styles during this foray into the world’s most questionable form of photography, the Glamour Shot?

We’re not sure if these photos even count as questionable choices, but we sure do have a bunch of questions about them.

  • Oversized clothes?
  • Token Smiley Face next to too-tight outfit?
  • Glamour Shot?
  • Too dark lipstick and lipliner?
  • Giant jersey
  • Outfit Made Out Of The American Flag?
  • Billy Ray Cyrus On Top, Miley On Bottom?
  • Hiding in a tree?
  • Happy-Looking, Wholesome Britney Spears?
  • Possibly Not Even Britney Spears?
