MOVIE FAB: "Jumping The Broom" Grosses $16M + Mary J. Blige Taking Acting Lessons To Play Nina Simone

Angela Bassett, Paula Patton, Meagan Good and Laz Alonso had a lot to celebrate this weekend as their film Jumping The Broom did great box office numbers. Get the deets inside and find out why Mary J. Blige is taking acting lessons...

Over the weekend, Jumping The Broom surpassed Sony's projections and made $16M at the box office, making it the third most popular film nationwide. And because the film was made for just $6.6M, the movie has already proved profitable. Hopefully, that will lead to more movie houses investing in independent black films.

Movie experts say part of the success was due to Sony reaching out to faith-based audiences as well as tie-ins with TLC's wedding programming and Royal Wedding coverage. Congrats to the cast.

Mary J. Blige confirmed that after many delays, she's set to star in a Nina Simone biopic which begins shooting in the fall. She recently told BET.com, “I’m definitely still doing it and I’m in acting classes for it now. We start shooting at the end of the month!”

Written by Cynthia Mort, the film will focus on Nina's relationship with her assistant Clifton Henderson. Also, Mary will star in Rock of Ages with Tom Cruise and Alec Baldwin. When describing her role she said, “I’m playing Justice Charlier, a gentleman’s club owner. I’m having so much fun preparing for it, and I know Tom. I love Tom. He just really wants the best for everybody.”

In honor of Mother's Day, actress LisaRaye McCoy & NBA wife Jackie Christie posed for the covers of Jet and Tight Rope magazine with their daughters. We have pics of these YBF women and their beautiful daughters plus Thandie Newton looking stunningly beautiful on the June issue of UK Instyle after the jump...

LisaRaye McCoy and her daughter Kai Morae landed the cover of Jet magazine's Mother's Day issue and discussed their tight knit relationship and what makes their family circle strong. Meanwhile, Jackie Christie, author and wife to NBA baller Doug Christie, graced the cover of Tight Rope Magazine with her daughter Chantel "Chani" Christie. In the issue, Jackie opens up about love, forgiveness and sisterhood. She even offers her daughter some advice.

Both Jet Magazine & Tight Rope Magazine will be available May 9th.

Thandie Newton is looking HAWT on the June issue of UK Instyle.
