Lady Gaga on copying Madonna: “There’s no drama, no jealousy, no competition”

Posted: 05 Jul 2011 08:56 AM PDT

gaga1

This is Lady Gaga on the cover of the August issue of The Advocate. This is her "self portrait" - or at least that's what they're claiming. I've just skimmed the article (the full piece is here), and Gaga seems to be fielding questions mostly about politics and her work on issues of gay rights. So, unlike her recent Harper's Bazaar piece, Gaga doesn't sound like a coked-out lunatic, claiming that Alexander McQueen's ghost inhabited her body to write "Born This Way". Gaga doesn't sound so druggy here, but… you know, she's still full of herself. I buy that she's a passionate supporter of gay rights, and she really does put her time and effort where her mouth is:

Through skepticism and criticism, pop superstar Lady Gaga remains one of the most outspoken advocates for LGBT equality today. She's been accused of not being gay enough to claim one of the letters the aforementioned acronym, and critics say her activism is superficial, but through it all her devotion to supporting marriage equality, fighting the "don't ask, don't tell" policy, and increasing AIDS awareness remains strong. The Advocate's Jeremy Kinser spoke with Lady Gaga about her activism, her critics, and her music. Lady Gaga immediately sounded off against some of the skeptics.

"To say that I would use the gay community to sell records is probably one of the most ridiculous statements anyone can make about me," Gaga states with a hint of frustration in her voice. "I would say the top thing I think about every single day of my life, other than my fans, loving the music, and my family being healthy, is social justice and equality."

While she may be frustrated by the backlash she has faced, she understands that with fame comes cynicism.

"Rumors, shots at me as a human being, that's what comes with the territory of being a musician and being someone who is a public figure," Gaga confesses. "I care only about what I can change. What can I push forward? How can I be a part of the fight for modern social issues?"

Lady Gaga put her money where her mouth was, however, in a recent controversy with mega-retailer Target. The company was set to sell a special edition of Gaga's album Born This Way, but many LGBTs expressed indignation at the deal after Target came under fire when the company's corporate PAC made campaign contributions to support antigay candidate Tom Emmer in his failed 2010 run for governor of Minnesota. After the outcry, Gaga met with the company's "entire executive staff" and soon thereafter canceled the deal.

"You're either going to try and change or you're not," Gaga recalls of the meeting, in which she insisted Target ally itself with LGBT charities and organizations. And, while terms of the deal were not made public, they did not satisfy the singer.

"Taking an ambiguous stance is not what I'm about, obviously. I like to go right for the ass-kicker. You're either in or you're out. I'm from New York. I know bullsh-t. I can smell it from a mile away."

Lady Gaga has also faced backlash—fair or not—for drawing too heavily from another gay favorite and equality advocate, Madonna. Gaga recognizes those comparisons as well as those to other women she admires, including Barbra Streisand.

"There's no drama, there's no jealousy, there's no competition," she says. "They're just happy to see other women winning. I just feel so connected to Madonna in a lot of ways, and I feel connected to Barbra, and I feel connected to Cher and Blondie and all of the women who came before me."

Born This Way: "I would say that's precisely what Born This Way is all about. It's not about just being born in one moment; it's about being reborn over and over again until you find and become that unique and special person inside of you that is the most brave and the most sure and the most ready to take on the world," she says. "And I was born this way. And that's who I am. Some people weren't born to wear masks, but I was. I was born to wear masks and wigs and fashion. To express myself through my clothing and my performance art, and that's who I am. And the song is meant to be liberating not only from an individual perspective but from a creative perspective."

Gaga doesn't take the accompanying fame for granted. She knows that with it comes an equal measure of responsibility. "I believe I was destined to be an artist," she says. "At the end of the day I could be rolling around in Rolls-Royces, buying mansions for myself, making records, and dancing around in my underwear. But to be honest, I'm not interested in doing that at all. I'd rather be at rallies with the fans, being a part of their voice, helping to mobilize and enforce change. If people don't believe me, they don't have to be a part of it."

[From The Advocate]

Ugh… when she's talking about gay rights, I'm all "go, Gaga!" And then she starts in with her martyr complex and how she's not copying Madonna and I just want to smack her a little bit. Ugh, I won't even start with her.

Here are some photos of Gaga in Taiwan yesterday:

Kate Moss covers Vogue UK, wants to get pregnant on her honeymoon

Posted: 05 Jul 2011 08:32 AM PDT

moss1

Here is the August cover for Vogue UK - KATE MOSS. Or "Mrs. Hince" if you will. The dress is Miu Miu and the Moss pictorial was done by Mario Testino. This is very interesting because Kate is allegedly supposed to get the September cover of American Vogue, with an extensive profile of her wedding. Mario Testino was AT her wedding, and he was photographing Kate on the day, in candids (and I would imagine, several formal portraits as well). Did Vogue UK just c–kblock American Vogue?

As for Kate's post wedding plans, according to random British sources, Kate and Jamie Hince are honeymooning in the Mediterranean, on Sir Philip Green's yacht. Sources also claim that Kate is "desperate" for another child, and hopes to get pregnant on her honeymoon. It wouldn't surprise me at all if Kate wound up pregnant again - Lila is how old now? She's like 8 or 9 years old, I think. And Kate is only 37! A source tells Closer magazine: "Kate wants to give Jamie the best wedding gift he could wish for by coming home from their honeymoon pregnant. They’ve started a new chapter and feel ready for parenthood. Kate’s never really been ready to try for another baby, there was always some event coming up, but now she is. (She) has been eating tons of oily fish, veg and fruit to make sure she can conceive. Jamie has long been keen for them both to curb their partying and settle down." Yeah, it's past time for Kate to put down the straw and start cleaning up her bidness. That being said, she managed to give birth to one healthy child, and I hope she will be able to again.

Here are more wedding photos! Enjoy the contrast between Kate when she's beautifully styled for a professional shoot, and what she looks like in candids. I like her, I really do, but everything from the neck up looked kind of ragged on her wedding day.

LeAnn Rimes tweets professionally photographed bikini shots of her “curves”

Posted: 05 Jul 2011 07:40 AM PDT

As we talked about yesterday, LeAnn is on another needy, crazy jag where she's tweeting bikini photos of herself and making some big fuss about how she's so healthy and she doesn't know why people continue to harp about how skinny she is and she's eating so much and she's America's Sweetheart and everybody is just yelling at her all the time and it's NOT HER FAULT. So, what to do? First, I would suggest that LeAnn and her doctors sit down and figure out the right medication and dosage and everything, because the neverending cycle of manufactured drama is making my eye twitch, and none of it healthy.

Anyway, LeAnn tweeted the two black and white bikini photos on Sunday with the comments "CURVES… They are there LOL" and "Beach Bum…" Barf on that, but beyond her bones, how weird is it that LeAnn hired a professional photographer to take artsy bikini photos, just so she can post them on Twitter? These are totally professional, hi-res images - which just proves A) LeAnn has too much time on her hands that she's organizing this kind of dumbass photo shoot FOR TWITTER and B) Bitch needs a prescription. Note: the photo of LeAnn and Eddie is from Saturday. Because they’re so in love.

Cate Blanchett, wearing lipstick red Armani in Paris: gorgeous or ghostly?

Paris Fashion Week began today (I think) and these are photos from the Armani Prive show, where the two big celebrity attendees were… CATE BLANCHETT. And Katie Holmes. We so rarely get new photos of Our Beloved Blanchett, so lets milk these two lonely photos for all they are worth. I'm assuming Cate wore Armani, and it is magnificent, as most things are on her. You'd think that red would overwhelm her, considering she's so pale and blonde and such. But it doesn't - it works beautifully on her. Maybe that's just because I love her… but I seriously think she looks amazing. I want the suit. UPDATE: I added more photos of Cate.

Next: Katie Holmes. No, we don't have access to any photos where you can see her whole outfit. I think it's black, loose and long-sleeved. Armani did her wedding gown, if I remember correctly, so Katie has some history with the brand. Plus, she doesn't have much else going on - she's been in Florida, where Tom Cruise is filming Rock of Ages, and she just threw him a big birthday party. Guess she didn't want to stick around, though. Zoom…. PARIS! I do like her hair here. Very glossy.

Duchess Kate in Sarah Burton for McQueen: budget Ralph Lauren?

Posted: 05 Jul 2011 06:45 AM PDT

fp_7554252_barm_william_18_20

Here are new photos of the Duchess of Cambridge in Prince Edward Island, Canada yesterday. First up, she wore this "nautical" themed ensemble from Sarah Burton for Alexander McQueen, which I would never have guessed. Sarah Burton's eye is SO much different than McQueen, and this looks like a years-old Ralph Lauren ensemble rather than a modern ready-to-wear piece from one of the most exciting British design houses. You may remember, Kate's wedding dress was also done by Burton for McQueen too. While I think that this outfit - and Kate's wedding gown - were appropriate and lovely and all, I still get stuck on "WTF happened to the House of McQueen?"

fp_7554243_barm_william_09_20

fp_7554194_barm_william_00_20

After that event, Kate did a costume change into a pair of jeans, a sweatshirt-like thing and a jacket, all for a dragon boat race in which she competed against her husband. For those who enjoy a little history with their fashion posts, in 2007, Kate memorably signed on for, and trained for a boat race. That was when she and William split up, and she was looking for something to occupy her time (not a job, silly!). When William persuaded her to take him back (i.e., he called her), she dropped out of the boat race. I do enjoy how handsy they are together. They seem like real newlyweds, and I think both of them are enjoying this tour so much because they get to do it together.

Meanwhile, according to ABC's Bob Woodward, Kate told an older gentlemen that she "hopes" to have children. I have no idea why this is big news in royal coverage, considering if Kate did NOT hope to have children, she never would have been a royal bride (first rule of the royal family: create more royals). According to Woodward, Kate "walked over to this group of parents and there were these two little girls that wanted to give them these flowers, they handed them over to her as she squatted down and then one of the fathers told us he came up to her and wished her the best for when she ultimately has a family and she went back and said, quote, ‘Yes, I hope to.’ No timing about when she wants to do that and all that, but very interesting.”

Janice Dickinson in a bikini at the age of 56: is it time to invest in a one-piece?

Posted: 05 Jul 2011 06:10 AM PDT

fp_7555243_dickinson_janice_sam_16_22

These photos were one of the first things I saw this morning. Every photo agency has photos of Janice Dickinson in a bikini today, so I just clicked to see how bad it was. To my surprise, I didn't wince once. Janice Dickinson has a better bikini body that Kelly Bensimon, in my opinion. Sure, there's some Iggy Pop happening (as there was with Kelly Bensimon too), but overall, I think Janice looks pretty good for her age - bitch is 56. We should all hope to be flaunting it when we're that age, I think.

fp_7555173_dickinson_janice_sam_06_22

My biggest problem? Janice's face, not her figure. That face is not the result of aging - that face is the result of too much tweaking, stretching, pulling, injecting, filling, cutting, lasering, and more. My second biggest problem? Why don't SOME women realize that there's absolutely nothing wrong with a one-piece swimsuit? Why is there this obsession with trying to pull off a bikini at any age, at any size? Sometimes a lady's figure and yes, HER AGE, means that a one-piece is more flattering, more appropriate, and just better overall.

Of course, I'm not going to show you Janice from behind. It's too… much. But if you'd like to see, go here. *shudder*

Jesse James on cheating on Sandra: “I didn’t lie about it, I owned it like a man”

Posted: 05 Jul 2011 05:57 AM PDT

wenn5649091
Do you find it surprising that Jesse James is still talking about Sandra Bullock a year after their divorce was finalized? It’s as if he’s still hung up on her and thinks about her constantly. He’s still promoting his book, so I guess it’s predictable that he continues to bring it up. In a recent interview with an Australian Radio station, James gave his same old tired excuses in that pissy voice of his. It’s all about him and how he felt as usual. He claims that he “didn’t lie” about his affairs and “owned it like a man,” however he completely misses the fact that he lied to Sandra for years and that he lied to the strippers he slept with about the state of his marriage. He also claims that

On telling Sandra he was cheating
It was pretty painful to like talk to someone and know that you’re like, the next words out of your mouth are gonna devastate their life.

On if people reached out to him
Not many man, it was like cockroaches when you turn the light on. Everybody scattered. Nobody wanted anything to do with me. I totally got it, because it was like the media, so I’m like “cool, you know…” All my real friends, which was a pretty small group. They’re all there and never left. They all saw it for what it was.

On if anyone on the street talked smack to him after the scandal
I never got one negative comment. Not from anyone. The only people that said negative stuff to me were paparazzi and they were like being paid to do that.

On how people supported him
The media portrayed it as like this big huge negative thing, but man if anything I got more support from anyone else because yeah, guess what I cheated on my wife, but you know what - so do a lot of other people.

You know, does that mean I’m the dev… does that mean I’m satan, you know? I don’t think so.

He “didn’t lie about it”
I made a mistake, and I’m sorry for it and I owned up to it. I didn’t lie about it, I didn’t try to do any kind of B.S. like you know, PR campaign or whatever. I said “Hey, you know, I did it, I’m sorry I made a mistake,” you know.

He “owned it like a man”
I owned it like a man. I took all the abuse for it, which nobody does.

On if he’s forgiven himself
Yeah, I’m cool.

Claims he didn’t do interviews for a year
You wanna know something funny, that kind of has to do with Australia? I didn’t talk to the media for like a year, like wouldn’t talk to anyone. Never, you know like no interviews, no anything. But I write for an Australian magazine and I still wrote my monthly column… the American media is too stupid that they didn’t even realize it. I talked about all kinds of stuff, .. never picked up on it.

[Transcribed from audio of the Kyle and Jackie O show]

So he “didn’t do any interviews,” and would “never,” right?

And as far as him “owning up” to his affairs, he didn’t even go into a single detail in his book. He didn’t name names, he didn’t admit how many women, and tried to make it sound like he was searching for something Sandra didn’t give him, and as if it were her fault. He wrote “I'm into sex, but contrary to whatever biker stereotype got built up around me, sex is mostly a cerebral experience for me. If there's no personal connection there, then it's sort of pointless. But with that said: I still did it. I screwed around behind Sandy's back, and the whole world came to know about it.” That’s it. That’s Jesse cashing in on breaking Sandra’s heart and that’s how he “owned it like a man.”

Here’s audio of the interview

Daniel Craig left his ex Satsuki Mitchell devastated, “absolutely bewildered”

Posted: 05 Jul 2011 05:46 AM PDT

wenn2304840

The last we heard of Daniel Craig and Rachel Weisz, a random passerby had declared them "sexier than Brangelina" which you guys debated exhaustively last Friday. Previously, we had talked about their "whirlwind" romance (which seemed to have begun while both Rachel and Daniel were "with" other people, and we also heard about how much Daniel really, really wanted to marry Rachel, which I thought was incredibly hot.) Anyway, a few days ago, The Daily Mail had an interesting piece about Daniel and Rachel, and the people left in the wake of their hot, sexy romance. The Mail spoke to the father of Satsuki Mitchell, who was engaged to Daniel for several years, and the whole article is full of interesting background on Daniel and Rachel. Did you know that Rachel was a radical feminist at university? Did you know that for the most part, Rachel likes, according to friends, "a bit of rough" in her men? You can read the whole exhaustive thing here, and here are some highlights:

The whole [wedding] event, which apparently was followed by a quiet meal and an early night, was carried out amid the sort of secrecy of which 007 himself would no doubt have been proud. But it has not exactly gone down well with friends of 43-year-old Daniel Craig back home. They are miffed, it seems, that the first they learnt of the nuptials was when the actor's Los Angeles-based PR Robin Baun put out a terse statement last weekend confirming that they had taken place.

One long-time actor friend of Chester-born Craig, who has worked regularly with him - and shared more than a few of the drunken nights to which the Bond star is occasionally partial - told the Mail this week: 'Frankly, I think it's a bit much he couldn't let his old pals know. I really don't understand why he feels the need for all this cloak-and-dagger silliness.'

Unofficially, those surrounding the new Mr and Mrs Bond were letting it be known this week that the pair had decided on a low-key event 'out of respect for their previous partners'.

Which does seem rather strange, given that according to the camps of both Craig and Miss Weisz they only began their affair after splitting with their respective long-term exes. Why, then, the need for such secrecy? Perhaps it has something to do with the whirlwind nature of their race up the aisle - at the first hint of hasty nuptials, many would assume that the bride was already expecting. Could that be why Miss Weisz was so eager to become Mrs Craig? Whatever the case, few can deny that things have been moving at warp speed for the couple who have only been officially dating for six months.

Craig's now ex-fiancée Satsuki Mitchell - a 32-year-old Hollywood producer - is said to be 'absolutely bewildered' at the pace at which he and Miss Weisz have formalised their fledgling relationship.

Her own six-year romance with him netted her nothing more permanent than the consolation prize of an admittedly impressive Cartier diamond engagement ring he presented her with in 2007. While some of her circle in LA were letting it be known this week that the Japanese-American Miss Mitchell had stoically moved on, her father Christopher confessed to the Mail this week that her emotions remain very much on the raw side. So much so, in fact, that she can't bear to hear mention of Craig's name.

'His sudden marriage came out of nowhere,' Mr Mitchell told us. 'We heard about it like everyone else, by reading the newspapers. She doesn't mention his name now and tells me off if I do. Satsuki has only just reached a happy place. She has since said, more than once, that the break-up was the best thing for her. She knew he was not the man she wanted him to be and there was something wrong in the relationship.'

Mr Mitchell said that Craig and his daughter had been house-hunting in New York when the relationship started to unravel early last year, although all must have appeared well when, a few months later in May 2010, the couple bought a £1million penthouse in Manhattan's trendy TriBeCa. Satsuki showed obvious strain after the split and her father says she was so upset that her weight plummeted, even prompting him to ask if she was suffering from an eating disorder.

'I have suggested to her on a number of occasions that she might have one,' he said. 'Yet whenever we're together she eats like a horse.'

Her devastation is hardly surprising, perhaps, given that she is said to have considered London-born Rachel a friend, after the two women spent time together on the Canadian set of the upcoming horror film Dream House last year, in which Weisz stars with Craig.

Satsuki, who also shared Craig's £4 million home close to London's Regent's Park, is said to have discounted rumours circulating on set that the leading man and lady had become close. Members of the crew were already whispering that 41-year-old Miss Weisz, the star of the blockbuster movie franchise The Mummy, had fallen 'head-over-heels' for her rugged-looking screen love interest.

However, Craig is said to have insisted to the willowy Satsuki that he was nothing more than good friends with Rachel, whom he has known for ten years.

While Rachel Weisz's spokesman was insisting her relationship with Aronofsky, director of this year's Oscar-winning Black Swan, had been over for several months, in an interview just weeks earlier he had given no indication that all was not well between the couple. The bespectacled filmmaker has since moved out of the five-storey townhouse the couple shared in New York's fashionable East Village — and it's reported he's gone from their London home, too — while Weisz has remained with their little boy.

Despite the split, sources close to Weisz and Aronofsky insist they are determined to stay on friendly terms for the good of their son, of whom they have agreed to share custody.

This week Rachel, who has recently been talking nostalgically about returning from New York to live in the UK, has had workmen refitting her £3 million North London home amid reports the couple are about to move in. They are also said to be looking for a six-acre property on the south coast as a holiday retreat. Just the sort of out-of-the-way place that would be ideal for the reluctant Bond, his new wife and the family they may be about to start.

[From The Mail]

Did you get all that? Satsuki is pissed and hurt. And whatever was going on between Rachel and Daniel, they were lying to their partners about it while they were working together, and everything fell apart shortly after the movie ended. While I have sympathy for Satsuki, I also tend to think… meh, whatever. She can claim that the split was the "best" thing for her and everything, but at the end of the day, she still got to nail Daniel Craig for five years, and that's got to be one of highlights of any woman's life. The more I read about Rachel and Daniel, the more I feel like they were just two forces of nature coming together, exploding with each other. HOT. Oh, and I guess the British papers are just out-right claiming that Rachel is pregnant too. Eh, she probably is!

Paris Hilton’s relationship rollout w/ Hangover director Todd Phillips

Posted: 05 Jul 2011 05:38 AM PDT

fp_7550604_hiltonphillips_o
Paris Hilton must be desperate to get us to watch the tail end of her flailing reality show, The World According to Paris. Either that and/or she’s trying to make her very recent ex boyfriend, Cy Waits, think she’s moved on already. Paris has been spotted out with Hangover director Todd Phillips. In case the club makeout pictures on TMZ weren’t enough to convince us, she arranged a pappable moment with Phillips, who looked kind of annoyed to see that their outing was being photographed.

fp_7550336_hiltonphillips_o

It must be love! Paris Hilton and Todd Phillips have now been spotted together THREE times!

The unlikely pair began showing up together almost immediately after Paris confirmed she’d split from longtime boyfriend Cy Waits.

She was caught kissing The Hangover producer/director at a nightclub on Thursday, and Sunday the new pair was out for lunch in Malibu.

Paris & Kathy Hilton Have A Mom & Daughter Dinner Out – See The Photos

Phillips has several films in development, including Hangover 3. Don’t be surprised if Paris pops up in one of them.

[From Radar]

I hope Radar is wrong and that Paris doesn’t get cameos in any of his films. She could play herself I guess, but it’s not like she has a fraction of Diddy or Mike Tyson’s acting ability or charisma.

I’m not buying this relationship. Paris dates pretty boys like Doug Reinhardt, Alex Vaggo, Stavros Niarchos III, Paris Latsis and Cy. She did declare her love for Benji Madden, though, so maybe she likes to mix it up when she needs the publicity.

In other news about Paris, her stalker was arrested outside her Malibu beach house on Monday. This was the same guy who attacked her then-boyfriend, Cy Waits, outside a court hearing for another stalker/intruder in April. I think the problem here is that Paris is just way too easy to find.

Here’s Todd Phillips without his shades. He’s much better looking here.

Hugh Laurie for L’oreal men’s skincare: perfect or not a believable spokesperson?

Posted: 05 Jul 2011 05:29 AM PDT

hughlaurie
The latest face of L’oreal’s men’s skincare line, L’Oreal Paris Men Expert, is scruffy grumpy Hugh Laurie of House. Hugh will represent the line overseas, like Gerard Butler and Patrick Dempsey before him. Now, I can see Dempsey and maybe Butler representing men’s skincare, but this just seems beneath Laurie. I’m trying to separate him from his character on House, for whom this role as spokesperson would be laughable. From what I know of British Laurie he’s quite down-to-earth and not at all Hollywood. But I guess that makes him the perfect score for a skincare line. Here’s more, from The Daily Mail:

And today Hugh Laurie is cast in an unlikely new role, as the male face for L’Oreal Paris Men Expert products.

He joins fellow Hollywood stars Gerard Butler and Patrick Dempsey, who are already ambassadors for L’Oreal Paris.

Hugh said: ‘At first I thought it was a mistake, but then I realised that

L’Oreal wasn’t looking for models but for people with strong personalities, who are worth it…and who aren’t afraid to proclaim that using cosmetics can be a very masculine decision after all.’

The men’s grooming business has grown significantly over the past two years, with British men now spending more on skincare than ever before.

And Laurie could be the ideal model to attract men who fear their masculinity will be threatened by using cosmetics.

Laurie has won critical and popular acclaim for his portrayal of the curmudgeonly but brilliant Dr Gregory House in the hugely popular U.S. medical drama House.

But after eight series it seems he may be ready to leave the Vicodin-addicted misanthropic character behind and try something new.

He told the Radio Times: 'The end of [the eighth] season, right now, looks like the end of the show. That is as far as they have got me for.'

The 51-year-old is estimated to be paid around £250,000 [$400,000 USD] an episode – now making him the best paid actor on television.

[From The Daily Mail]

There’s also this video of Hugh in which he kind of makes fun of his new gig. I just love hearing him speak in his regular accent. I still find Hugh as a skincare spokeman puzzling but the guy might feel more secure with a few more million in the bank now that House is possibly winding down. That’s probably the motivating factor behind this. He used to talk about how he was afraid he would lose his gig on House, and now that it’s possibly looming after the next and eighth season it could have convinced him that this wasn’t a bad idea.
