Neil Patrick Harris’s partner David Burtka has baby-daddy drama with an ex

Primetime Emmy Awards Arrivals held at The Nokia Theatre L.A. Live in Los Angeles, California on August 28th, 2010. Neil Patrick Harris, David Burtka Fame Pictures, Inc

Back in August, Neil Patrick Harris and partner David Burtka announced that they were expecting twins via surrogacy. They had long been reported to be looking into surrogacy, and many of us were very happy that it had finally happened for them. Star Magazine, as usual, was all over it - to the point where I think Star must have some sources in some of the countries' fertility clinics and surrogacy agencies (Star also broke the story about Sarah Jessica Parker's twins). Anyway, this new crimp in the works might be nothing - but it surprised me, and I expect all kinds of things. Apparently, these twin babies (still gestating) are not David Burtka's first children. He already had two babies with his ex-lover, Lane Janger. Those twins live with Lane. Oooh… baby-daddy drama!

Neil Patrick Harris and boyfriend David Burtka are eagerly counting down the days until the birth of their twin babies via surrogate. But Star can reveal that David’s already a father to a set of twins — and they live with their other dad, film producer Lane Janger, in Los Angeles.

David and Lane, who broke up in 2004, welcomed daughter Flynn and son Javin in 2000. Lane refused to comment when contacted by Star, but an insider says, “David doesn’t see that much of the children, especially since he’s been with Neil. He chats with both of them on the phone and sends them presents on their birthdays.”

In an even more bizarre twist, Neil and David are now expecting boy and girl twins using the same agency that David and Lane used more than 10 years ago, Growing Generations.

"It was actually David who suggested it,” reveals the insider.

[From Star Magazine]

This sounds totally sketchy. David rarely sees his "other" kids?!? If this was heterosexual baby-daddy drama, David would be called a deadbeat asshat who doesn't show up for his kids. And I think he is - granted, the custodial issues are probably complicated and we don't know the details, of course. But it still seems very strange that David has little to no involvement with the OTHER twins he was father to. And I can't believe it was never reported before now that David has other kids! This is some Swizz Beatz junk.

Charlize Theron reportedly dating 45-year-old model/actor Eric Thal

A few days ago, I was just sitting around idly, wondering who Charlize Theron was dating. I think my wondering began when I saw some recent bitchface photos of her, and I was thinking that Charlize might be trying to pull an Uma Thurman, and only date rich, powerful, successful businessmen at this point. Turns out, Charlize is no Uma. According to Life & Style's sources, Charlize is now coupled up with a 45-year-old model/actor named Eric Thal. These are a few of the photos we have of him:

He's kind of cute. After the Irish hotness that was Stuart Townsend, I was kind of hoping for another really gorgeous hookup, but apparently not. Life & Style's source - who is identified as a friend of Eric's - claims that Eric and Charlie "have a lot in common. He's a farmer who grows all his own vegetables, and Charlize grew up on a farm in South Africa. The two like to escape Hollywood and go to his farm in upstate New York." Well… he sounds nice and low-key. Maybe that's what she likes.

Christina Hendricks in Harper’s Bazaar: “Women & gay men hit on me”

Posted: 06 Oct 2010 08:07 AM PDT

nov-ns-cover-christina-hendricks-lo

Bless it, I do love Harper's Bazaar. They've been doing some interesting features and photo shoots lately, and I wanted to love Christina Hendricks' November cover shoot. But Bazaar fell into the same trap that other magazines have fallen into when styling Christina - they have no idea what to do with a busty, curvy, pale redhead, and Christina ends up looking deathly and corpsey. That being said, A-plus for putting her on the cover and getting her into some interesting designer clothes. They even put her in some menswear styles - very interesting. The full slideshow is here, and the full Bazaar interview is here. Here are some excerpts:

CH on her appeal: “Women hit on me,” she chuckles. “My husband thinks it’s so odd that so many women hit on me.” Gay men too. “They say to me, ‘Well, I’m not straight, but if I was…’ I think it’s so flattering.”

On the Joan character: When Christina, 35, originally auditioned for Mad Men, she was up for the part of Midge, Don Draper’s bohemian lover. She ended up being cast as the “bossy, know-it-all” Joan. The character has become something of a cult figure, due to Christina’s measured, artful performance and, in no small part, her now-famed Joan walk—an exaggerated, saucy sway that accelerates heartbeats as much as it stops traffic. “All the costumes were so tight,” Christina explains of the Walk. “I wasn’t used to the undergarments, so my natural swing became more of a swing. After I became conscious of it, my hands came up too.” While Joan has a peanut-brittle exterior, inside she’s all caramel. “Joan would probably have rules like ‘To be a polite guest, eat all but the last two bites,’” Christina—whose voice in person is a fairylike tinkle and in a higher register than Joan’s—says, laughing, as she cleans up her gnocchi. “You’d want to make sure that your host knew you enjoyed the meal, but you want to be a lady.” Joan’s retro rules have spawned a satirical blog, What Would Joan Holloway Do?, and the ultimate validation, her own Barbie (with curves that are actually anatomically possible).

On her curves, and being a curvy role model: “When the attention started to be about my figure, I was surprised, because it wasn’t something I was focused on. And then it became very positive, and people were saying very nice things.” During Mad Men’s first season, she and Arend were at dinner when a fan approached her and said, “‘Excuse me, I just want to tell you that I watch your show, and you make me feel better about myself. I am a curvy woman, and you’ve made me feel sexy and beautiful.’ I got teary eyed.” Christina tears up again at the memory. “I remember Geoffrey saying, ‘That’s what you’re doing for people. That’s amazing.’ And I said, ‘I’m just trying to be a good actress and trying to tell a story, but if this is the sidebar, all this positivity, then that is awesome.’”

On being attacked as a "big girl in a big dress" at the Golden Globes: “To say something like that and put it next to a distorted picture discredits you entirely,” Christina says. “And it hurt my feelings. I thought that dress was stunning. I stand by that dress to this day. I had just gotten back from my honeymoon, and I felt beautiful in those pictures. I was smiling and beaming, and I felt like a goddess. It’s a celebration, and I’m here because the show I work on is being recognized as excellent work. And you’re going to tell everyone in the world that I was wearing a shitty dress? Let me go to a party and wear my pretty dress!”

On wearing designer clothes, but not the sample size: “You are expected to go to these things wearing fabulous dresses that are incredibly expensive, so it gets difficult,” she says. “I found myself at the beginning of Mad Men, because I wasn’t a sample size, spending an exorbitant amount of money on a nice dress that I would never wear again because someone would say”—she wrinkles her nose theatrically—”‘Christina Hendricks wore this dress twice.’”

On her lifelong positive body image: “My mother never said to lose weight. Diets were never a big deal. My mom was always beautiful and voluptuous and curvy, and I always thought she was gorgeous.” But puberty had its inevitable challenges. “I did have doubts about my figure when I was 12, 14,” she admits. “I was a dancer, but my body was changing. Then all of a sudden I started getting boobs and my body wasn’t playing along with my game plan. It got depressing for a bit, because I desperately wanted to be a ballerina.”

A really good modeling story: “Oh, I have a story for you,” she says conspiratorially. “I was in Milan, and you would see the same girls at castings. There was one girl—she was like, ‘I can’t get any work. I’m so sick of this, I’m ready to quit. I love your hair color. What do you color your hair with?’ and I was like, ‘Oh, it’s red. Here’s my formula.’ It was Karen Elson. A couple of weeks later, she had bright-red hair.” Christina leans into the tape recorder and says, “Sorry, Karen, but you did ask about my hair color. Then I saw her on the cover of Italian Vogue, and the rest is history!” She laughs. “Karen is amazing. I’m such an admirer of hers.” But she’s right: It is a good story.

[From Harper's Bazaar]

Most of the interview is Christina talking about her curves and about clothes, which… I mean, I'm a little tired of it, but that's what most women talk about in fashion magazine profiles. Plus, it's interesting hearing from Christina because she is such a positive body-image role model for so many women (including me). Now if we can only get some stylists who know what to do with pale, busty redheads.

Hilary Swank’s premiere styling: tacky, horsey, or stunning?

Posted: 06 Oct 2010 07:41 AM PDT

fp_5847722_rij_conviction_100510

Here are the photos from last night's big Conviction premiere. Some are claiming that Hilary is going to get another Oscar nomination for her portrayal as a working-class mom who puts herself through law school to represent her wrongfully imprisoned brother. I think the movie looks tough… and slightly boring. But Hilary is doing what she does best - straight dramas where she portrays someone working-class and tough, yet vulnerable. That's what has won her two Best Actress Oscars (eye roll). Anyway, I don't really care about that, I care about the fashion. I find this dress on Hilary to be rather uneventful - it shows off her great figure, but it isn't really sexy or special or anything. What is amazingly awful is Hilary's styling, though. Check out this ungodly combination of cheesy 80s makeup and an unflattering hairstyle:

fp_5847730_rij_conviction_100510

Seriously, Hilary? You're going to put metallic blue eyeliner/shadow on your bottom lid? And then you're going to pull your hair back so tightly that all we can see is "horsey"?

Hilary's costar Juliette Lewis looked really cute though - except for the shoes. She always gets one thing wrong.

fp_5847741_rij_conviction_100510

I liked Minnie Driver's look too! The dress is weird, but she kind of pulls it off.

fp_5847766_rij_conviction_100510

And my lover Sam Rockwell. I just saw Iron Man 2 over the weekend, and Sam was one of the best parts of it. He's so delicious as a weasel! He looks hot here. I would hit like a house on fire.

Jamie Foxx on his sister with Down’s Syndrome: ‘I don’t call it a condition, I call it living’

Posted: 06 Oct 2010 07:29 AM PDT

etvideo
Jamie Foxx really surprised me with his latest appearance at a charity event for Quincy Jones’ Global Down Syndrome Foundation. He came with his sister, DeOndra Dixon, who has Downs, and explained that she lives with him, along with his other sister and his mom and dad. It’s obvious that Jamie has a lot of love for Diondra, and he was even joking around about her. She laughed at him and rolled her eyes when he was gushing about her. Here’s ET Online’s coverage and you can watch their video through their website.

We’ve seen Jamie Foxx with his sister DeOndra Dixon on the red carpet but now he’s putting her in the spotlight and opening up about caring for a sibling with down syndrome.

“This little lady right here lives with me along with my other sister, along with my father and my mother. So, we’re one big happy family,” Foxx said while seated next to DeOndra.

On Saturday night, DeOndra and her peers participated in the Be Beautiful, Be Yourself Jet Set Fashion Show where music great Quincy Jones and “Survivor” host Jeff Probst were both in attendance. The event went to benefit Global Down Syndrome Foundation. Foxx said of the evening, “This is just so amazing that she gets to do her thing where the spotlight is on her. The focus is on her. It means a lot.”

The actor couldn’t help but dote on his sister, telling ET, “I don’t call it a condition. I just call it living. … When she loves, she loves. When she’s mad, she’s mad. When she cries, she cries. When she’s happy, she’s happy, but she always tells the truth.”

He said the message of this event was to be yourself and to recognize that there’s “beautiful everywhere.”

[From ET Online]

That’s so nice! I used to see Jamie Foxx as this kind of smarmy guy who used a music career as a side gig to get laid, but even if he does do that, and he probably does, he’s a nice guy! He’s taking care of his family and he didn’t just buy them a house or hire people for them, he’s living with them. I love that.

The event that Jamie and his sister attended raised $1.45 million which will go to the Linda Crnic Institute for Down Syndrome at the University of Colorado School of Medicine.

Now here are some pictures of Jamie shirtless and also outside a club. Because you know that’s how you still see him. (Me too.) I would hit that and only feel slightly guilty.

Is Kate Middleton making another public push for marriage?

Posted: 06 Oct 2010 07:15 AM PDT

ls

Life & Style's cover story this week is kind of putting the cart before the horse. They seem to take it as a given that Prince William and Kate Middleton will marry, and now we're on to discussing the guest list. L&S speaks to entertainment journalist Katie Nicholl, who writes gossip pieces for The Daily Mail. I recognize her name because I've always enjoyed her Mail stories, and she has some suspiciously good sources in Kate Middleton's camp. I've always suspected that Nicholl has probably even interviewed Middleton (off the record, or as an unnamed source) for some of her stories, and I think Nicholl probably also has spoken to members of Middleton's family. So that makes this Life & Style story very interesting… is Kate making another public push to marry Prince William?

When Prince William finally weds longtime girlfriend Kate Middleton in June 2012, only a select group of VIP's will make the guest list! The location they're eyeing, St. George's Chapel in Windsor, seats only 1,300 people—compared to father, Prince Charles and mother, Diana's massive ceremony of more than 3,500 guests. So which famous faces made the cut?

Life & Style has learned that likely VIP's on the guest list include first lady Michelle Obama, Diddy and Rod Stewart!

"Elton John, who was extremely close to Diana, will most certainly be at the wedding," adds an insider. Meanwhile, scandal-ridden Sarah Ferguson, who was caught on tape negotiating a bribe in exchange for access to her ex, Prince Andrew, "is banned," a palace insider tells Life & Style.

And Both Prince Charles and Queen Elizabeth will have a strong say as to who makes the cut.

"It will be the job of aides at Clarence House, which is the Prince's London residence, as well as Buckingham Palace, where the queen lives, to compile the guest list," royal correspondent Katie Nicholl, author of William and Harry, a book about the royal brothers, tells Life & Style. "There's a lot of protocol involved — many heads of state and European royal families must be accounted for and included."

[From Life & Style]

Yeah… if there is a wedding, the only one inviting everyone they want will be the Queen. Everybody else's guest list will take a back seat. After all, the Queen is probably going to end up paying for it (and by that, I mean the British taxpayers).

Anyway, this comes at an interesting time. A few weeks ago, the Enquirer and British tabloids were reporting a minor scandal involving Kate's brother. Kate's brother James Middleton was involved in some kind of financial scheme (it sounds like a Ponzi scheme) that lost a lot of people's money, and James is now under investigation. A source told the Enquirer: “The last thing the royal family wants is to have Wills’ future brother-in-law arrested during the wedding festivities. By 2012 the investigation should be over, and James Middleton will have been cleared, or not. Kate is very upset about the delay. It just gets worse and worse for her. She’s been waiting seven years to marry Wills - and now she thinks the royals are just looking for any excuse to freeze her out.”

Also - yesterday, Prince William saved someone's life. He's working as a rescue helicopter pilot, and he saved a man who was injured on an oil rig during an emergency mission. It was pretty good - although Prince William has been in his military and flight training for five years, and this is pretty much the first thing he's done with it. Still, good job.

Here are some newish photos of Will last week at a charity event. Those Windsor genes really kicked in, didn't they?

Katherine Heigl is oblivious, calls husband Josh “very self-absorbed”

Posted: 06 Oct 2010 06:37 AM PDT

kh4

I've been shocked by the many, many television ads for Katherine Heigl's new film, Life As We Know It. It looks like a pretty generic romance/baby comedy, and it looks crazy stupid. But Katherine is trying to regain that "The Next America's Sweetheart" mantle that she tossed away with her big mouth and bitchy attitude. This is the new and improved Dame Heigl! She loves babies. That's pretty much it. The only difference between the old, nasty, unprofessional Heigl and the new Heigl is that the new one is all about her baby. Below are Us Weekly's excerpts from Katherine's November cover profile for Redbook (Redbook's excerpts here), and you can see that the old nastiness is still fighting to get out:

One of Katherine Heigl’s many surprises of parenthood? Watching her husband Josh Kelley become a hands-on dad to adopted daughter Naleigh, 22 months.

“He’s a great dad. I didn’t expect it,” Heigl, 31, admits of singer Kelley, 30, in the November issue of Redbook magazine.

“He’s such a guy,” the Life As We Know It star explains of her spouse of nearly three years. “I adore him, I can’t imagine being with another man, but he can be very self-absorbed.”

Ouch! Heigl clarifies: “Not in an egomaniacal way, just kind of in his own head and unfocused on anything other than his own stuff. So I was really surprised by how on top of it and how connected he is.”

As for baby number two, the couple may indeed adopt again. “We still talk about having biological children as well. I’m not ruling anything out,” she says. But, she explains, “adoption has been a part of my life and a part of my family, so it was how I wanted to start.”

(Before the actress was born, her parents adopted her older sister Meg in South Korea — Naleigh’s native country.)

Naleigh’s adoption came through just as Heigl began filming Life As We Know It with Josh Duhamel. The time was “a complete blur,” she says. “I had just become a mom….I was all over the place. I was really trying too hard. I was completely bonkers.”

“If I spread myself too thin,” she adds, “I’m not a good actor, I’m not a good mother, and I’m just really high-strung-—and everybody hates me.”

[From Us Weekly]

Yes, Joshua is the self-absorbed one. Right. That's why Katherine seems to signal in every interview, "IT'S ALL ABOUT ME!!!" Poor Joshua. I always feel like that guy deserves a medal. At least Katherine acknowledges that "everybody hates" her. Except that it feels like she's just saying that so we'll say "Oh, no, not EVERYBODY." And no one does. Because we're all thinking, "Yeah, she nailed that one."

Also - a few days ago, Evil Beet covered Dame Heigl's recent New York Times interview, and it's the same kind of self-pitying, "everybody hates me" stuff. Evil Beet points out that in Katherine's mind, she shouldn't get labeled as an unprofessional bitch because she's "just being honest" and she's "forthright in her opinions." Does she really not see it? We get that Dame Heigl is being honest and that those are her honest opinions. And we think that she's honestly an ungrateful, unprofessional bitch.

Sister Wives: Kody’s 1st wife on how she convinced him to marry a divorced mother

Posted: 06 Oct 2010 06:17 AM PDT

sisterwives1
We’ve already heard that Kody Brown, the polygamist husband on TLC reality show Sister Wives, was introduced to his fourth wife by his first wife, Meri. Kody has four wives, three of which he’s had for the past 17 years. He was married to the first three before he had any of his 13 biological children, and all three helped each other raise their children together. (Hollywood Life has a good overview of how Kody met each of them if you’re interested.)

The introduction of a fourth wife, a divorced mother with her own three children, is being portrayed on the show now, and it’s of course disrupting the balance in their household. In a clip on TLC, Kody explains that he was initially against even considering his now fourth wife, Robyn. Meri, his first wife, liked her and decided she would make a good addition to the family. It’s like Meri wanted a new friend so she annexed Robyn and her kids. This is how Meri describes it. (You can watch the video here.)

sisterwives2

Meri: So Kody and I were out one night and we went over to a friend’s house, and Robyn happens to be this friend’s cousin, so that’s where we first met Robyn…

Robyn and I kind of clicked that night. I asked her who she was, and about her family. She had her three kids there with her, and after we drove off that night, after we realized that she wasn’t married, I said to Kody ‘You might kind of want to think about her,’ and he’s all ‘No way.’

He was not having any of that. Because he’s kind of always had an aversion to marrying someone who had already been married before and taking on kids.

So he was like ‘Absolutely no way,’ and kind of gave me a dirty look. [laughs]

Kody: At that point she reinforces it. She says ‘No, you don’t understand, she is really cute.’

Meri: I didn’t say she was really cute… that’s what you were thinking.

Kody: When I heard she was divorced, I just put this wall…

Meri: I just knew that there was something there and so I kind of had to reiterate it to him. ‘You should think about it.’

Meri continues: When you come across something and you know that it’s just right for you, then you just kind of go with it, and there’s just no argument about it. That’s kind of how I felt about it… there was definitely a connection with me and Robyn. I just knew she was a person I could be friends with, and even more than that, have her in my family and have her love my daughter and all our kids, and have me love her kids and what a blessing it would be to our family and to her as well.

[From video on TLC. Discovery.com]

Meri got kind of embarrassed a little when she described meeting Robyn, and it’s like she had a crush on her. I guess I can’t relate as I have only one way of interpreting that, but these women really do love their “Sister Wives” as sisters and there’s not necessarily anything else there.

There are more video clips on TLC’s website, and Robyn sounds like she’s fitting in well with the family and wants to be a part of their team. She calls the first time she interacted with the family “magical” as the kids had so much attention and love from their moms and siblings.

Hollywood Life has more on how Kody and his wives support their enormous family. Apparently the kids work outside the home starting at 14 or 16. Their home was built relatively cheaply and on the show they explained that it was built by a polygamist. Here’s more from HL’s insider. “They all pitch in. The house isn't tough to take care of once it's built since you have three wives and all of the kids. The building supplies are cheap since one of the leaders of the polygamist group 20 miles from where I live owns a lumber place. Their homes aren't REALLY nice. They have mostly mini-vans, and the kids start working as young as they can usually 14 to 16 years old.”

The Browns are of course being investigated for felony bigamy. They’ve tried to skirt around the law by only making one of the marriages legal. By going public, they hope to increase awareness and acceptance of polygamy. Their case has been turned over to the Utah County Attorney after an investigation by the local police in Lehi, Utah where they live. The County Attorney will decide today whether or not to charge them with a crime.

Tim Gunn records PSA for gay suicide prevention, discusses his suicide attempt

Posted: 06 Oct 2010 05:59 AM PDT

NEW YORK - FEBRUARY 26: Co-hosts Tim Gunn (L) and Simon Doonan (R) speak at the 21st annual Bailey House auction and party at Roseland Ballroom on February 26, 2009 in New York City. (Photo by Amy Sussman/Getty Images)

The PSA below, featuring Tim Gunn, made CB cry. It got me choked up too, but I didn’t start crying until I got to People Magazine’s cover story. Just FYI - hearing Tim Gunn talk about suicide amongst gay teens will really get you worked up. Tim recorded the PSA as part of a new initiative by The Trevor Project, a gay suicide prevention project that some celebrities - like Kathy Griffin and Daniel Radcliffe - have been working with for years. The Trevor Project does a lot of work with gay suicide prevention, and they even have a 24-hour hotline - for more information about their work, and for the donation page, go here.

Anyway, Tim Gunn recorded a very sad PSA about gay suicide. Tim reiterated columnist Dan Savage's movement of "It Gets Better" (which we discussed yesterday). Tim confesses his own suicide attempt at the age of 17 years old… and… Jesus. Sad.

If Tim tells you not to do something, don't do. Whether it's in the workroom or in your personal life, take Tim's advice. He's like Jesus, only he's gay, celibate, fabulous, and he will bitch you out for not working a Manolo.

Back to the serious subject - People Magazine's cover is also about gay suicide and bullying, and the cover is of Tyler Clementi, the Rutgers student whose intimate relations with a man were recorded live by his straight roommate. People excerpts the story here - what keeps coming back to me in the stories of young gay suicides is that these teens felt like they were alone in the world, that no one understood them or heard them. I hope that this movement by some celebrities is one that if you're young and gay and in pain, YOU ARE NOT ALONE. There is a kid like you in every town. And it does get better. Listen to Papa Gunn.

James Franco in drag: fabulous or needs work?

Posted: 06 Oct 2010 05:56 AM PDT

jamesfranco_candy
James Franco appears in full makeup and women’s clothes on the cover of Candy, a magazine devoted to transsexual style. He’s in the second issue, for Fall-Winter 2010-2011, which is coming out on October 24 in a limited edition of just 1,000 copies. They’re sure to all sell out with this great cover.

Franco appears with his hair slicked back and wearing full makeup including blue eyeshadow, false eyelashes and bright red lipstick. With the black gloves, chunky gold jewelry and tuxedo jacket it’s all too 80s for my taste. That’s probably what they were going for. He needs a wig and some softer makeup.

A video for the magazine’s new issue (below) shows that they’ll be paying tribute to icons like Twiggy, Barbra Streisand, Lady Gaga, Amy Winehouse and Grace Jones. They’re also doing Anna Wintour! I love it.

Franco comes off as a little too cool for school sometimes, but I admire how he’s so comfortable with his sexuality that he’s appeared on the cover of The Advocate and now in drag for a transsexual magazine. He’s game for a lot of things, and he’s filling his time getting an education and exploring art and culture. He seems like an interesting guy. I only get slightly haughty vibes from him, like he’s the type of person that would name drop a bunch of artists and places while I’d tilt my head, nod and squint a little as if I knew what the hell he was talking about. He’s probably one of those guys who wouldn’t notice or make you feel uncomfortable though, he’d just be so enamored with all the ideas he was spouting that he’d assume you “got it” too.
