The Young, Black, and Fabulous

The Young, Black, and Fabulous

RUN IT: Iman VS. Rosario Dawson VS. Kim K.

Posted: 20 Oct 2010 08:58 AM PDT

It's a Victoria Beckham dress three-way face-off!  Decide who ran it best when you read on...

This Victoria Beckham Collection Fall 2010 folded neck fitted dress seems to be one of the hottest items of the season.  Supermodel Iman rocked it in a fall orange color.  She rocked it with black Louboutin open toe pumps and a gold metallic belt back in August on the NY Stock Exchange floor. And she went with only one gold bracelet to put emphasis on the dress.

Actress Rosario Dawson rocked the same dress in nude this past weekend at the SPIKE TV Awards.  And also kept the accessories to a minim with a single gray stone ring and metallic drop earrings.  She kept the whole canvas of the outfit the same with a pair of nude closed toe pumps.

And reality chick Kim Kadashian rounded out the trio with the Victoria Beckham dress in black.  At an engagement ring launch event in Toronto yesterday, she paired her dress with shiny black pumps and a shiny black and silver single bracelet.

So...

WHO RAN IT?!

MEET THE NEW "FOOTBALL WIFE": Mercedes Nelson

Posted: 20 Oct 2010 07:52 AM PDT

The deets have been uncovered on another cast member of VH1's new "Football Wives" reality show.

Mercedes Nelson's not a wife, surprise surprise, but an ex-girlfriend of a Dallas Cowboy.  We've got what you can expect to see from this chick when you read on...

Mercedes Nelson's bio on the show's website said she is an ex-girlfriend of a Dallas Cowboys star. Well, we've learned the Cowboy ex in question is none other than runningback Marion Barber (pictured above)--no relation to Tiki.

Apparently, Mercedes is the only "wife" out of the cast who is no longer with her man.  Seems like she's the Evelyn Lozada of the group.

She is back in forth between LA and Dallas for whatever reason.

Mercedes is also a graduate of Woodbury University (a private college institute in Burbank, CA), as well as the creator of her fashion line Merci-Belle which was recently showcased in LA fashion week. We're told she's currently getting it in with a certain "on the rise" R&B singer, but the source won't reveal the name of this singer until after the show premieres.  If you even care enough to wait.  More pics of Mercedes:

The new VH1 series "Football Wives" premieres this Sunday at 10:30p ET.  And check out the other "Wives" here.

Tyra Banks Gets Restraining Order+Clarence Thomas' Wife Demands 20-year-old Apology From Anita Hill

Posted: 20 Oct 2010 07:23 AM PDT

TV mogul Tyra Banks was recently granted a restraining order against a deranged stalker.  Find out the deets inside, plus what happened when the wife of Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas called Anita Hill last week....

Tyra Banks, the creator of “America’s Next Top Model”, has been granted a temporary restraining order against Marten Williams Jr., who she claims has a history of mental issues.  He was jailed previously for stalking other celebs, but has just been released.

Tyra says she and her family have been “targeted, harassed, and stalked” by Marten ever since 2006. The temporary restraining order is set to expire on October 28th, at which time a hearing will take place to make it permanent. Good luck and be safe Tyra.

And for today's foolywang report:

The wife of US Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas called her husband's  sexual harassment accuser, Anita Hill, and demanded an apology for her testimony before Congress in 1991.

"Good morning, Anita Hill, it's Ginni Thomas," said Virginia Thomas, who called Hill's office at Brandeis University, where Hill is a law professor.  She left a message at 7:30 a.m. Saturday:

"I just wanted to reach across the airwaves and the years and ask you to consider something. I would love you to consider an apology sometime and some full explanation of why you did what you did with my husband. So give it some thought and certainly pray about this and come to understand why you did what you did. OK. Have a good day."

Dr. Hill, who testified that Clarence once held out his soda can and asked, "Who has put pubic hair on my Coke?,"  said she thought the call "was a prank."

"I certainly thought the call was inappropriate," Hill said in a statement to CNN issued by Brandeis. "I have no intention of apologizing because I testified truthfully about my experience and I stand by that testimony."

But it wasn't, as Virginia Thomas later confirmed it was her to a reporter.

"I did place a call to Ms. Hill at her office extending an olive branch to her after all these years, in hopes that we could ultimately get past what happened so long ago.  That offer still stands, I would be very happy to meet and talk with her if she would be willing to do the same. Certainly no offense was ever intended."

When told of Virginia's comments, Anita replied,

"Even if it wasn't a prank, it was in no way conciliatory for her to begin with the presumption that I did something wrong in 1991.  I don't apologize. I have no intention of apologizing, and I stand by my testimony in 1991."

Totally agree Dr. Hill.  But who calls someone at 7:30 on a Saturday morning about something that happened almost twenty years ago??  Ginni obviously had a long Friday night...or was inspired by some climactic Tyler Perry scene. Either way....inappropriate.

Willow Smith Whips Her Pup Into Shape+Rihanna's Day/Night "Who's That Chick" Video Mash Up

Posted: 20 Oct 2010 05:42 AM PDT

Willow Smith has been toting all around NYC this week promoting her new video "Whip My Hair".  And this time she was just doing her typical 9-year-old chores and taking her pup out for a walk.  Well....her handlers were.

Pics of Willow, plus Rihanna's full day and night versions of her "Who's That Chick" video...

Cute pup!

She left the Mandarin Oriental hotel yesterday to walk in a little park with her doggie.  Gotta scoop the poop!

Here's the full versions of both the daytime and nighttime versions of Rihanna's "Who's That Chick" video.  She explains to Entertainment Weekly about the vid that simultaneously is incorporated onto Limited Edition Doritos bags:

This is the first time my fans will be able to interact with me in one of my videos. We shot the video for “Who’s That Chick” in two versions: day and night. With the Doritos bag you’ll be able to change back and forth between the two videos and it will be different every time.

Rih also dished to the mag that she's the badass in her new Battleship movie, her "Raining Men" collabo with Nicki Minaj on her upcoming LOUD album is about there being many men available if things don't work out with one, and she may add in a duet with her bestie Katy Perry.

Kanye Says He Is A Soldier Of Culture+T.I. AXEd From Endorsement Deal

Posted: 19 Oct 2010 04:48 PM PDT

Kanye West dropped by "The Ellen DeGeneres Show" yesterday to show a sneak peek of his new movie "Runaway."  See what else he had to say inside plus get the deets of T.I.'s now former deal with AXE...

Kanye West spoke with Ellen earlier today for his first real sit-down chat (besides "Jay Leno") since he was publicly banished after the Taylor Swift incident in 2009.  Kanye told Ellen what he's been up to and previewed a clip from the 35-minute experimental movie for "Runaway," which MTV and BET will premiere in full on Saturday at 8 p.m. ET.

After the Swift incident he took the advice of friend rapper Mos Def, who advised 'Ye to get out of the country for a while until things cooled down."  He said,

"I left America. I stopped doing music altogether. I just took some time I went to Japan just so I could get away from paparazzi altogether. Then in November I moved to Rome and just lived there, and when I came back to the States I moved to Hawaii. I lived there for about six months and just worked on music."

When Ellen asked if he paid attention to the MTV VMAs media storm, it got a little emotional as he said, "What was good about going away it was the first time that I got to stop since my mom had passed," referring to his mother, Donda West's, 2007 death.

"I had never stopped and never tried to even soak in what all had happened.  It was the first time I had stopped since I had made it. Since I had started. It was time to take a break and develop more as a person, as a creator and focus more on my thoughts and my ideas and what I wanted to bring to the world."

Ellen then got deep and asked if the Henny he was sippin made him run on stage.  And Kanye said in the moment, he just felt like he had something to get off his chest.  He described feeling like an unwanted pop culture canary in a coal mine and swore to never again attend an awards show.

"I feel like in some ways I'm a soldier of culture.  I realize that no one wants that to be my job and I'll never go on stage again. I'll never sit in an award show again. Will I feel convicted about things that really meant stuff to culture that constantly get denied for years and years? I'm sorry, I will. I cannot lie about it to sell records."

Now...that's a deep statement coming from a music artist as record companies, like other businesses, are mainly concerned about the bottom line.  But I'd rather a soldier of culture than a puppet of the industry or a stereotypical plaything.  This kinda make me love Kanye a little more.  And his whole "rebellious guy" thing.

Watch a clip of the interview below:

T.I. signed with AXE earlier this year and now he's already been removed from their website. A while back we reported that T.I.'s legal troubles put him in danger of losing his deal with deodorant maker AXE...and it did.  A rep for the company says "We will no longer feature T.I. in our promotional campaign.

The decision comes one month after the company publicly stated it was "troubled" by T.I.'s recent arrest for drug possession.  So that's one less check coming into the T.I./Tiny household with all those mouths to feed. SMH.

Monica Strikes Back At Haters By Deleting Twitter Account!

Posted: 19 Oct 2010 02:39 PM PDT

Was it something we said?  Monica just told her friends and followers that she's ixnaying her Twitter account.  All on the heels of her announcing...kinda...her engagement to her Laker boo Shannon Brown.

The deets when you read on...

Monica Tweeted a pic of herself Sunday that gave away the fact that she's now a diamond laced engaged woman.  But apparently, that didnt go over too well with folks on the internets.  While some fans congratulated her and wished her well, other folks criticized how fast the two are moving and judged how quickly she seems to fall in love with men.

Mo responded to her haters, or maybe just had an epiphany independent of the Sunday debacle, by throwing deuces to the whole Twitter thing completely.  Her Tweets just minutes ago:

So much for the Tweet by Tweet accounts of her nuptial planning that wedding obsessed folks like me were looking forward to....

TV FAB: Stacey Dash And LisaRaye McCoy Are "Single Ladies"

Posted: 19 Oct 2010 01:19 PM PDT

Looks like LisaRaye needs those tv checks to keep on comin'.  Ms. McCoy and Stacey Dash are set to return to TV next summer as "Single Ladies," a new one hour scripted series produced by Queen Latifah and VH1.  Get the deets inside...

For those viewers fed up with one reality show after another, here's a scripted one instead.  VH1 will debut an hour-long series called "Single Ladies," starring Stacey Dash, LisaRaye McCoy, Charity Shea, and DB Woodside. The show is produced by Queen Latifah’s Flavor Unit Entertainment and will ask the question "what do women really want in a relationship?," with a comedic/dramatic spin.

"Single Ladies" is set in the world of Atlanta "fashion", music, and "celebrity" that will constantly explore how women approach relationships. The show's debut will be preceded by a movie of the same name shot earlier this year.  The series itself begins production in late 2010 and both will premiere in July 2011. The movie features guest appearances by Lauren London, Eve, Common, Chilli, and Kim Porter. Executive producer, Queen Latifah, will make a guest appearance in the series.

"My partner Shakim and I are excited to collaborate with VH1, as they have a similar vision on how to bring this show to life. I think "Single Ladies" will really fill a hole in what is needed on television today,” says Queen Latifah.

Sounds like an interesting show.  I'm just happy it's not another series about desperate women competing to date a rapper or a baller.  Well, actually, let me not speak too soon....

"I LOVE MY HAIIIIR": The Back-Story On The "Sesame Street" Skit

Posted: 19 Oct 2010 12:37 PM PDT

The vid has been all the rage on Youtube.  And now, the writer of this "I Love My Hair" "Sesame Street" segment that has resonated with not only black women, but kids and women of all backgrounds, has been explained.

Check out the vid, plus the white male writers' reasoning for developing it, when you read on...

"Sesame Street" writer Joey Mazzarino explained to ABC News that after he and his wife adopted their daughter from Ethopia, they were unaware how to handle her hair "situations" as she got older.  So this skit, which has become viral on the net, was born.

The issue of hair is a hot topic and a pretty complex one in the black community.  So installing in young black girls at an early age how other black girls (puppets on "Sesame Street") love their hair, maybe black girls will grow up to be black women who love themselves and their features and have learned "self-acceptance".  Instead of hating them like some in the community do.

Joey wrote the song mainly with his daughter in mind:

"She's like my little muse," Mazzarino said.

As Mazzarino and his wife watched their daughter grow, he noticed a change when she started playing with Barbies. Segi started saying negative things about herself and her own hair.

"She was going through this phase where she really wanted like the long, blonde hair. ... She would look at Barbies and really want the hair."

"I just want kids to know their hair is beautiful," Mazzarino said. "I just hope little kids, little girls see this and really feel positive and great about themselves."

This video is definitely cute, if you can get past the badly glued on braids and afro puffs.  The message comes across clear for a girl at any age to understand.  Sweet!

"Don't need a trip to the beauty shop...because I love what I got on top...it's curly and it's brown...and it's right up theerrrre...I love my haiiiiir...."

50 Cent And Soulja Boy Cover XXL Mag+Magic Johnson Sells His Lakers Share For $35 Million+Chad and Evelyn Spotted In Miami

Posted: 19 Oct 2010 11:45 AM PDT

50 Cent and Soulja Boy cover the latest issue of XXL.  Check out the ~interesting~ photo inside, NBA Hall of Famer Earvin "Magic" Johnson sales share of the LA Lakers for $35 Million and Chad Ochocinco and "Basketball Wives" co-star Evelyn Lozada spotted in Miami inside.....

50 Cent says he is channeling Lawrence of Arabia and is posing alongside Soulja Boy for the November edition of XXL mag. The issue hits stands November 2nd.  *eyebrow raised* You feelin' Bishop Eddie Long's new hip hop ministry team Fif and Soulja's cover?

Not that he needed the money, but the CEO of Magic Johnson Enterprises recently pocketed a quick $35 million dollars by selling his 5% stake in the Los Angeles Lakers yesterday.  TMZ reports Magic made the sale from a skyphone as he flew in a private jet to a YMCA event in Hartford,CT.  Reports speculate that Magic's sale clears the way for the Hall of Famer to own a bigger portion of another NBA team in the future.

Magic bought shares of the Lakers in June 1994 for a reported $10 million, and now the five-time league champion is interested in taking a larger ownership role in an NBA franchise.  Last month he expressed interest in taking a significant role in a group attempting to buy the Detroit Pistons.

Asked about the deal, Magic released this statement:

"I am truly humbled to have been a Lakers player for 13 years and an owner for over 10 years. I thank Dr. [Jerry] Buss from the deepest part of my heart and soul for allowing me such an incredible opportunity. I will continue to work alongside Dr. Buss, Jeanie Buss and [general manager] Mitch Kupchak in their efforts to continually build and maintain the best NBA franchise in the league. This was a bittersweet business decision made on behalf of my family and myself, and I want to assure all the wonderful and loyal Lakers fans that my decision will in no way affect my dedication and support for the Los Angeles Lakers. I am and will always be a Laker for life."

Nice business move, but hate seeing black ownership go away for any reason.  Hopefully he cops a large stake in the Pistons like he wants to.

And for our sporty couples report...

Chad Ochocinco spent some time in Miami with fellow VH1 reality star Evelyn Lozada.  Friends close to the couple say the relationship is "going amazing" and Chad has already filmed several scenes for the new season of Evelyn's show "Basketball Wives."

So we'll all be able to turn in and see what reality TV makes of their "relationship".

Kerry Washington & Viola Davis Get FAB For ELLE's Women In Hollywood Tribute

Posted: 19 Oct 2010 10:23 AM PDT

YBF Chicks Kerry Washington and Viola Davis both hit up the 17th Annual ELLE Magazine Women In Hollywood tribute yesterday at the Four Seasons Beverly Hills.

The ladies were honored for their work in films and showed up looking fab.  Pics when you read on...

Kerry rocked this cute white strapless dress by Calvin Klein and nude Louboutin pumps.  She seems to be losing weight as of recent, so the dress should have been a bit more tailored for her bod.

Actress Viola Davis rocked this cute black dress with a ruffled detail hem.

Both ladies spoke about the fab women in Hollywood--Kerry accepted her own award and Viola spoke on honoree and former co-star Meryl Streep.

Kerry posed with fellow honorees Kate Hudson, Diane Krueger, and Hillary Swank.

And with ELLE's editor in chief Robbie Myers and ELLE Group's brand officer Robin Domeniconi.

Congrats to the ladies.
