First Look: ‘Don’t Be Afraid of the Dark’

Back in July we learned that genius filmmaker Guillermo Del Toro had signed on to direct a movie based on the Disneyland theme park ride The Haunted Mansion and just last week released his second book titled The Fall (Book 2 of The Strain Trilogy). Today we get our first look at his new film titled Don’t Be Afraid of the Dark which stars Katie Holmes and Guy Pearce:

It's not "The Haunted Mansion." And yet it really is. Guillermo del Toro has been hired by Disney to develop a new movie version of the company's spooky theme-park ride, but that film is years away. In the meantime, del Toro (as a producer and co-writer) and Troy Nixey (as a first-time feature-film director) have just completed another haunted house remake in "Don't Be Afraid of the Dark," an intensely scary exploration of the diminutive demons the inhabit the dark corners of a Rhode Island estate. Shot in Australia for Disney's Miramax label and starring Guy Pearce and Katie Holmes, the film was teased and met with acclaim at July's Comic-Con International in San Diego. But we've seen the finished film (it's not due out until Jan. 21), and the Hall H footage only hinted at some of the real frights — and some of the especially stylish filmmaking — to come. Pearce and Holmes play Alex and Kim, a couple in the midst of a make-or-break renovation of an estate with a basement best kept locked up. Ten-year-old Bailee Madison is cast as Alex's unhappy daughter Sally, sent by her divorced mother to get some rest and relaxation with her uptight dad. But she quickly is targeted by the devilish gremlins who skitter through the heating ducts and under the beds, who not only work to turn the grown-ups against her but also stop at nothing — including the local handyman (veteran character actor Jack Thompson) — to get to their young victim. Just as Del Toro served as a creative mentor to Juan Antonio Bayona with "The Orphanage," the "Pan's Labyrinth" visionary has helped to separate Nixey's debut feature from the horror pack. While there are plenty of jump-out-of-your-seat moments, "Don't Be Afraid of the Dark" is distinguished by its restraint and creative use of sound. We've all seen countless fright flicks where creaking floors create suspense, but how many have used whispers — "Come down to the basement and play with us" — to equal effect? The creatures themselves certainly carry Del Toro's trademark touches — a little bit furry, a whole lot nasty. Originally designed to be PG-13, the remake of the 1973 television movie will come out as an R. But "Don't Be Afraid of the Dark's" scares are as much psychological as they are physical. In other words, 100% Del Toro.

Del Toro is absolutely one of my favorite directors, hands down. His visionary style never disappoints and while I may be afraid of a movie that stars Katie Holmes, I am deffo NOT afraid that Guillermo Del Toro can make even a Katie film worth seeing. I’m curious to see how this sort of suspense will play here in the US … it bodes well for the success of the film that it has an R rating. If you have never seen a Del Toro film you must do so IMMEDIATELY (I highly suggest Pan’s Labyrinth). Del Toro fans … what do you think of this new film? Madonna Models Lingerie For Dolce & Gabbana

Yesterday we saw a few photos of Madonna raw and un-retouched from her Spring/Summer 2010 ad campaign for Dolce & Gabbana. Today we get to see new, presumably retouched, photos of Madge in new promo photos for D&G Lingerie … behold:

Just in case anyone needed reminding, Madonna has once again set out to prove she’s not letting age change her ways. The 52-year-old has posed for yet another racy Dolce&Gabanna advert, this time while wearing an incredibly low-cut black body suit and hold-up stockings. Accessorised with sunglasses, a crucifix and a red string Kabbalah bracelet, she prowls around an unmade bed with her cleavage threatening to spill out of her lingerie. In another frame, she reclines on white sheets accompanied by a black and white cat. Madonna struck up a friendship with Domenico Dolce and Stefano Gabbana while she was filming Dick Tracy in the early Nineties and they were invited to designer her costumes for The Girlie Show tour in 1993. The Italian designer duo announced their new collaboration with Madonna last year, which came after she spent her birthday with the pair on-board this yacht in Italy last August. They said at the time: ‘To have Madonna in our campaign is a dream come true.’

HMMM … I wonder what the unretouched versions of these photos look like? On second thought, I don’t wanna know.

‘Paranormal Activity 2’ Releases Another Movie Trailer

Back in June we got our first look at the first movie trailer for Paranormal Activity 2 and today we get to check out another trailer for the flick. As we learned in the first trailer, this new sequel will focus around the haunting of a family … with a baby. This new trailer shows more of that baby … and the scary things that will happen to it:


Okay … I’ll admit it … I was a bit worried that a sequel to the superb original film Paranormal Activity might be sub par but this new trailer has made me a believer. We find out why there is video footage — again — when the paranormal activity starts up again. We also see that the baby is in real danger in this movie … a development that makes the storyline that much more interesting. I love it. I loved the original and, thus far, I’m loving what I’m seeing from Part 2. I’m not gonna hold my breath, necessarily, but I am now much more confident that PA2 will be as good (or better) than the original. After seeing this trailer, what do YOU think?

‘Life As We Know It’ Premieres In NYC

Katherine Heigl, the new “Julia Roberts“, and her co-stars Josh Duhamel and Josh Lucas were among the celebs who walked the red carpet at the NYC premiere of their new film Life As We Know It which was held at the Ziegfeld Theatre last night … here are a few photos from the flashy event:


I gotta say … I’m a sucker for these kinds of heartfelt, romcoms … two single people — who very likely hate one another — are forced to live together when they are suddenly awarded guardianship of a little baby and VOILA! Ugh, I know it sounds cheesy but I have a funny feeling I’ll be plunking down the dough to see this flick in theaters. And even if this movie doesn’t look like your cup of tea you gotta admit, Katherine sure looks fab in this red dress. Josh looks good no matter what he’s wearing. Blech. Please don’t judge me too hard for wanting to see this movie … we all have things about us that we’re not proud of. Forgive me?

Britney Spears Picks Up Jayden James From Daycare

Britney Spears went to court yesterday to meet with the judge overseeing her ongoing conservatorship and I understand no changes have been made to the way things have been going (ie. the conservatorship is still in place). After she was finished at court, Britney made her way back home and picked up her youngest son Jayden James from daycare … resulting in this batch of adorable photos:


UGH … so cute, I could die. And, as if these photos weren’t enough to put us in a good mood … how about an update on Britney‘s upcoming new album? According to her managers, both Adam Leber and Larry Rudolph, progress on Britney‘s new album is coming along very nicely — apparently, she’s half finished recording it. Wee!! This is all VERY exciting news … if Britney releases her album in the Spring, I think I could wait that long. As long as we know when to expect it, I think fans will be happy to wait. What do y’all think … will be hearing Britney Spears‘s new album sooner rather than later?

The ‘Riot’ Act

Last night I made my way out to the Key Club on the Sunset Strip in West Hollywood, CA to see the amazing Digital Hardcore innovators Atari Teenage Riot live in concert for the first time since 1999. I’ve been a huge fan of ATR and Alec Empire since the mid-90′s but I only got to see them live in concert one time on their first US tour in ’99. Last night, at long last, I was able to see them live on stage again:


Digital Hardcore is electronic punk/noise and isn’t really the kind of music that most people like to listen to. I am not like most people tho and I really, really love the genre. Despite the fact that the music is mostly noisy, there are electronic beats that give the music a heart and soul … albeit a cold, aggressive yet funky soul. I’m not much of a mosh pit guy anymore but I simply had to get up close and personal with ATR last night. After the jump, check out some of the photos I snapped during the show …


For me, Digital Hardcore doesn’t make me angry … it makes me happy. I’m not sure what it is about the genre but I really love listening to it. Hearing the music performed live is a treat I don’t get to enjoy very often so last night’s concert was a lot of fun. For those of you interested, here is a clip from last night’s show that I found on You Tube. It kinda gives you a taste of what kind of concert Atari Teenage Riot puts on:


Yes, my ears were ringing and my head was pounding but ATR really put on a fantastic show. I feel very lucky I’ve gotten to see them in concert twice now … I can only hope I’ll get to see them live again.

Tonight, David and I will be heading out to see The Social Network and then play the rest of the night by ear. Can you believe it’s the weekend already? Can you believe it’s October already? Happy Friday!!

Kellan Lutz Pumps His Bod

On Wednesday we got to see a few photos of Twilight stud Kellan Lutz showing off his buff bod in a shirtless game of one-on-one in front of his home here in SoCal and today we get to see new photos that show how Kellan gets his bod so buff. Here are photos of Mr. Lutz as he emerged from a gym in North Hollywood, CA yesterday freshly primed and pumped:


While the site of Kellan‘s beefy bod is a nice sight, I have to admit his bulging veins are not. These photos have me exclaiming Yummo! and Yikes! all at the same time. It’s fortunate that Kellan‘s veins don’t normally look this veiny cuz it’s really not a good look for him … well, for anyone. Hotness comes at a price … and a lot of hard work. I just hope the next time Kellan‘s beefiness is photographed his veins won’t be quite so protrudy. Yeesh.

Whitney Houston Pays A Visit To The Red Carpet

Last week we saw photos of the fabulous-looking Whitney Houston making her way out of LA headed for the East Coast … today we see that our dear Whitney has made her way to NYC to make an appearance last night at a benefit event for the Keep a Child Alive program which raises funds and awareness as well as offers aid to HIV/AIDS affected families living in the developing world. As you can see from the following photos, Whitney appeared to have a great time last night in front of the cameras on the red carpet:


Oh, Whitney … I do love you so. Homegirl is lookin’ fierce and, admittedly, a little loaded in these photos but I’m heartened by the fact that her mama Cissy Houston was her date last night. Cissy keeps a good eye on her babygirl and I trust that that support is what has been keeping Whitney on the straight and narrow. I’m still very bummed that Whitney, thus far, has decided NOT to tour here in the US but I’m confident that we’ll get to see her on stage here in the US sometime in the future. She looks good, don’t she?

Padma Lakshmi Shows Off Baby Krishna Thea

Back in March of this year we got our first look at Top Chef host Padma Lakshmi‘s baby girl Krishna Thea, who was born the month before on February 20, and today we get to see how big the little miss has grown. Padma and Krishna were spotted out together in very colorful saris on the streets of NYC … behold:

Padma Lakshmi showed off her adorable seven-month-old daughter on the streets of New York as the former model took Krishna Thea for an outing around the Big Apple. The mother and daughter duo wore blue and pink traditional Indian saris and bindis on their foreheads as they stepped out on the autumn day. Indian-born Padma was happy to pose for photographers and little Krishna seemed to have been blessed with her mother's natural beauty. The successful author and host of popular U.S. reality TV show Top Chef revealed in March that the father of Krishna is businessman Adam Dell. Before her ex-lover had been named as the father, Padma had kept tight lipped over who he was.

Look at how cute Krishna looks in her little pink sari. What a doll. As usual, Padma looks less than thrilled to be photographed despite what the report above suggests (and despite the fact that she started her career in front of a camera as a model before graduating to the more substantive TV cameras). Nonetheless, mother and daughter look beautiful in these new photos. We may not get to see much of Krishna out in public but when we do, it’s always a treat. So cute!!

Rachel Zoe Is Reportedly Pregs!

According to new reports out today, Rachel Zoe — superstar celebrity stylist and star of The Rachel Zoe Project on Bravo TV — is at long last pregnant with her first child. Those of you who watched the most recent season of The Rachel Zoe Project (which just ended last week) already know that much of the dialogue on the show was about Rachel and hubby Rodger Berman‘s on/off desire to have children. It would appear, according to “sources close to the couple”, that all that dialogue has actually turned into a first pregnancy:

Hollywood stylist Rachel Zoe is three months pregnant with her first child, sources reveal exclusively to OK!. The 39-year-old, who has become a poster child for stick thin models, has only shared the news with her closest friends. And according to insiders, she and her husband, business partner Rodger Berman, are overjoyed at the prospect of becoming parents. A source tells OK!, "Rachel never really told anyone close to her that she and her husband Roger were trying for a baby, and because of her ultra-skinny figure and habits as a workaholic it was the last thing on anyone's mind." "Rachel even requests that clients don't bring their children to fittings at her studio, so there's never been any real clue that this is something she was longing for, a source adds. "But now that she's pregnant, she's telling people that this is something that she and Roger have wanted for many years and she's finally at a level of success where she can afford to take some time off." "She's going to be going on maternity leave from full time styling immediately after this year's Academy Awards, and doesn't expect to work again until early fall at the earliest. She and Rodger are especially happy and Rachel, who can normally be quite emotionless, even teared up a few times as she started letting people in on the news." "Right now she and Rodger are even considering waiting until the birth to find out what the sex of the baby is," a source explains to OK!. "They have a sentimental streak that they don't show much, but it's very sweet and old fashioned."

While I’m a bit worried that this news may be a bit premature (especially since the couple have not yet confirmed the news themselves), I think cautious congrats are in order. I really hope that this happy news turns out to be true … cuz you can never have enough babies in the world. Despite the fact that Rachel is very well-known for her bone-thin frame, I’m confident that she will take to pregnancy in a healthy way for the sake of her own health and the health of her baby. I’m guessing that if this baby news does turn out to be true, we’ll be watching Rachel‘s journey to motherhood on the next season of her reality TV show. I guess Rachel Zoe has got a new “Project” in the works ;)

First Look, First Listen: Mariah Carey, ‘Oh Santa!’

Early last week we got our first look at the album artwork for Mariah Carey‘s upcoming new Xmas album titled Merry Christmas II You. Today we get our first look at the cover artwork for the first single from the album, Oh Santa!

Picking up where her 1994 hit ‘All I Want for Christmas Is You’ left off, Mariah Carey will be releasing a brand new holiday album, ‘Merry Christmas II You,’ on Nov. 2. The record includes four original songs written by Carey, including ‘Oh Santa!’, the album’s first single. Jingling bells and a plea to Santa open the upbeat, festive track that has Carey wishing that he’ll bring her back her “baby” for Christmas. ‘Merry Christmas II You’ also features a new recording of ‘All I Want for Christmas Is You’ and some traditional holiday tunes, including ‘The First Noel,’ ‘Little Drummer Boy,’ ‘O Little Town of Bethlehem’ and ‘O Come All Ye Faithful.’

Much like she did for the cover artwork for Merry Christmas II You, it appears that Mimi decided to dig out an older photo from her archives for use in the cover artwork for Oh Santa! As y’all should be well aware by now, MC hasn’t looked this svelt in some time so it’s obvious that this photo was snapped sometime ago … but boy, does she look fab. I love the red sequined dress, don’t you?

Not bad … not bad at all. The song is very upbeat and fun and could, very possibly, be a big pop hit. I still think her first Xmas single All I Want For Christmas is You is an untouchable smash hit song, Oh Santa! sounds like a semi-worthy successor. What do y’all think of the track? Do you like it? Does Mariah Carey have another holiday hit on her hands?

Meet Cristiano Ronaldo’s Newborn Son

Back in July we learned the shocking news that soccer stud Cristiano Ronaldo fathered a child with an American woman on accident but had decided to do the right thing and accept responsibility for his child (which, essentially, meant that he paid off the mother for full custodial rights to the child and then handed the child over to his mother to raise the child for him). You may recall that in mid-July we saw what we thought was the first obscured photo of Cristiano‘s son … but it turned out not to be his son but actually his newborn baby nephew. Today, after so many months, we FINALLY get our very first look at Cristiano Ronaldo‘s son — Cristiano Ronaldo, Jr. — who was photographed in Brazil out and about with grandma Dolores Aveiro:

The son of the world's most famous footballer has finally been photographed for the first time, as Cristiano Ronaldo's mother took baby Cristiano out for walk. Dolores Aveiro, 55, took her three-month-old grandson out for a stroll in Portugal yesterday, as his dad prepared for Sunday's Real Madrid match against Deportivo. The Portuguese forward celebrated Real Madrid's 1-0 victory against Auxerre in France this week and will head to Madrid on the weekend for the Spanish League match. And while the 25-year-old jet sets around the world, his adorable son gets to bond with grandma and was spotted wearing a navy blue hoodie in his yellow buggy … Dolores was also minding the child as he was being carried from the Algarve to their family home in Lisbon, just ten days after Ronaldo made the surprise announcement that he had become father to a son. He added that the mother would remain anonymous and revealed that he would raise the child on his own with the help from his family.

And there he is … the little prince. I have to say, I’m not at all surprised at how adorable this little dude is. Look at dem cheeks? He is just the cutest little thing ever. I have to admit … I totally forgot that Cristiano was a father until these new photos surfaced. Sure, there was a flurry of discussion immediately following Cristiano‘s baby announcement but almost as soon as he admitted the child existed, he went right back to work (and play) and hardly ever again mentioned that his son exists. It seems clear to me that Cristiano Ronaldo, Jr. will be raised almost exclusively by his grandmother while Cristiano Ronaldo, Sr. just carries on like the young cad that he is. HMMMM. Still … you gotta admit that this little boy is just adorable and will grow up very rich. I guess you can’t feel too sorry for him.

Lindsay Lohan Surfaces At The Betty Ford Center

Yesterday we learned that troubled starlet Lindsay Lohan had checked herself in to the Betty Ford Center in Rancho Mirage, CA and today we get to see the first photos of Lindsay on the grounds of her new home away from home. As you may recall, Lindsay very positively made the decision to voluntarily admit herself into this live-in rehab treatment center in an effort to clean up her act. And even if she decided to go to rehab to merely clean up her image, I still think her decision to check in is a very positive one. Today we see that L. Lo has settled in nicely and seems to be normalizing in the program:

Over the years, Lindsay Lohan has undergone rehab at Promises, Wonderland, Cirque Lodge, UCLA Medical Center and now, according to sources, the most famous treatment-center-to-the-stars of them all. The actress, 24, checked in earlier this week at the venerable Betty Ford Center, near Palm Springs, where she plans to stay until an Oct. 22 hearing to answer to a failed drug test while on probation in a DUI case, sources tell PEOPLE. A legal source close to Lohan says that although the move could affect how harshly the judge punishes her, Lohan entered the 30-day program “out of a recognition that she really needs the help from professionals and great medical care to help her rebuild her life.” The source adds there’s no guarantee Lohan can avoid jail time despite how well she does at Betty Ford or how long she stays. But even if the judge sentences her to 30 days in jail, as he has threatened to do, Lohan may serve less – or no – time because of overcrowding. Still, another source close to Lohan tells PEOPLE, “She’s trying to help herself and she knows the severity of this.” … Jane Robison, a spokeswoman for the Los Angeles District Attorney’s Office, says she doesn’t know what the office will ask for at the Oct. 22 hearing or to what extent the stay in rehab will influence the prosecutor or the judge. Robison notes, however, that some of the work that Lohan will do in rehab will help fulfill previous requirements by the court. Lohan was ordered Aug. 25 to attend two behavioral therapy sessions a week, have seven contacts per week with a counselor for chemical dependency issues, attend 12-step classes five days a week, and attend four psychotherapy sessions a week.

It is my contention that even if Lindsay is in rehab for the “wrong reasons”, she still may benefit from the program just by merely being present there. Of course she is not going to get better over night … but if she is really serious about saving her own life, this rehab process will be a continued one … one that lasts for the rest of her life. It’s quite a relief to see Lindsay spending time with other people in the program … perhaps they can help one another battle their individual demons and come out of the program as better people. Despite the obvious dubiousness of the timing of Lindsay‘s decsion to go to rehab, I am still very hopeful that the girl may end up helping herself … maybe on accident. It really doesn’t matter how L. Lo gets better … as long as she does get better.
