Battle Of The ‘Network’ Stars

Posted: 02 Oct 2010 01:17 PM PDT

Last night David and I made our way out to see the new David Fincher film The Social Network and I have to say, without one bit of exaggeration, that it is the best film that I’ve seen all year and will likely be the best film I’ll see before Awards season next year. I know the film has been getting a lot of rave reviews but I have to join the chorus … from the direction, to the writing, to the acting, to the music — The Social Network is even better than the hype it’s been receiving:

I remember posing the first photos from the film’s production in November of last year and commenting on how uninteresting I thought the film would be. And to be honest, without Fincher‘s expert direction and screenwriter Aaron Sorkin‘s fantastic script, I’m certain The Social Network would be an incredibly boring movie about all the in-fighting that went on in the wake of the creation of Facebook. Instead, The Social Network is the most interesting, most compelling film I’ve seen in a long time. I am certain the film, at the very least, will be showered in Oscar noms … particularly for Fincher and Sorkin … but very probably for Jesse Eisenberg as well for his outstanding portrayal of Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg. His acting performance is riveting … and expertly delivered. The film’s score, by Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross, is just perfection … my guess is that TR and AR might get an Oscar nom of their own. Additionally, I’m just AMAZED that one actor played both roles of the Winklevoss twins (with the help of a body double/stand in). I don’t even know how that feat was accomplished but … dang, impressive. In all honesty, The Social Network feels like a very long movie (it felt like a long movie even before the Sean Parker character is first introduced) but the storytelling is so compelling that you can’t help but want more. If you were just to read the facts (or alleged facts) about the creation of Facebook you might be interested for a while but I doubt you’d find it very compelling … it is the marriage of expert direction, superb writing and impressive acting that makes The Social Network so good. I’m really curious to hear what those of you out there who saw the movie think. David and I haven’t been able to stop talking about it … and while it’s not a film I think I’ll need to see over and over again, I wouldn’t mind seeing it one more time just to take it all in again. Mark my words, this movie will make a big splash come Awards season next year … and rightly so. It’s good, y’all. It’s really damn good.

Tonight, my friends Angi, Darion and I are going out to see Buffyverse alum James Marsters and his band Ghost of the Robot play a concert here in SoCal … which should be a total blast. All 3 of us are big Buffy/Marsters fans and none of us have met him yet … we’re hoping to remedy that situation tonight :) Happy Saturday!!

Emma Stone Is In Talks To Play Mary Jane Watson In The New ‘Spider-Man’ Film

Posted: 02 Oct 2010 11:50 AM PDT

So how is this for PERFECT CASTING … a new report out this weekend by Deadline Hollywood claims that Emma Stone, who has been getting rave reviews for her new film Easy A and is currently filming the big screen adaptation of Kathryn Stockett‘s novel The Help, has been offered the role of Mary Jane Watson in the upcoming rebooted Spider-Man film franchise. As you may recall, we learned back in July that Andrew Garfield (who can currently be seen in the AMAZING David Fincher film The Social Network) has been cast as Peter Parker/Spider-Man and it seems like Spidey‘s main squeeze has been found:

Sony Pictures Entertainment will imminently offer the role of Mary Jane Watson to Emma Stone, who starred for the studio in Zombieland and Easy A. It’s another good role for Stone, who is currently shooting the Tate Taylor-directed adaptation of the Kathryn Stockett bestseller The Help for DreamWorks … That leaves the four other actresses … (with the possibility they could widen the search) for the role of Gwen Stacy. Those contenders are Glee’s Dianna Agron, Mia Wasikowska, Georgina Haig and Dominique McElligott. Stacy … is a plum part for the first installment of the 3D Marc Webb-directed reboot of Spider-Man, because she is the first love interest of the high school-aged Peter Parker, played by Andrew Garfield. Mary Jane … becomes more pivotal in the later installments of the Spidey saga.

I honestly cannot think of a more perfect actress to play Mary Jane in this reboot. Kirsten Dunst played a pretty good Mary Jane in the first round of films but I think Emma Stone will be better. She is so talented, that’s a given, but she also has the look down perfectly. And despite the fact that Gwen Stacy is Peter Parker‘s first love, we all know that Mary Jane Watson is his ultimate true and lasting love. I have to say I’m quite impressed with the casting of the new Spider-Man thus far … with Andrew Garfield and Emma Stone as the eventual main leads, I think the new Spider-Man films might actually turn out a’ight. What do y’all think of this casting … is it perfect or what? If not, who would YOU like to see get the role of Mary Jane Watson?

Tom Cruise Surfaces On The Set Of ‘Mission: Impossible 4’

Posted: 02 Oct 2010 11:23 AM PDT

Tom Cruise is bringing his Mission: Impossible character Ethan Hunt back to life in Prague this week as principal filming has begun on the upcoming sequel film Mission: Impossible 4. Here are a few photos of Tom in various spy costumes on the M:I 4 set:

It’s been four years since he last graced the big screen as secret agent Ethan Hunt. But Tom Cruise looked right at home as he reprised his role for Mission: Impossible IV. For his first day of shooting in Prague he was seen in a series of different outfits and at one stage was even sporting a bruise on his forehead, which appeared to be the handiwork of the make-up department. In another scene he was virtually unrecognisable as he dressed as a Russian soldier, complete with the sort of moustache that would make Tom Selleck envious. For another guise he was in modern day dress in a Bruce Springsteen T-shirt, with his hair looking windblown. And it’s clear the new installment is going to offer even more spy adventures than the first thee … Lost star Josh Holloway has joined the cast and will star alongside Cruise, Oscar-nominee Jeremy Renner and British actor Simon Pegg. It will be released in the U.S. in December 2011.

Blah. As much as I hate to admit it, I am kinda a big fan of the Mission: Impossible films. Despite the fact that Tom Cruise kinda bugs, I’m a sucker for action spy films like this (including The Bourne Identity films, Salt, etc.) … and I’m curious to see how Simon Pegg and Josh Holloway will fit in in this new movie. I’m actually quite grateful that Tom has tuned down the crazy in recent years … it really makes speaking favorably of him less of an embarrassing thing to do.

Billie Joe Armstong Makes His Broadway Debut In ‘Green Day’s American Idiot’

Posted: 02 Oct 2010 10:45 AM PDT

Billie Joe Armstrong, frontman for Green Day and principal composer of the Broadway musical Green Day’s American Idiot, make his Broadway debut this week playing the lead character in the stage musical of the show that he co-authored which is based on the album of the same name that he also co-authored … which, if you think about it, is kinda cool. Here are a few photos from Billie Joe‘s Broadway debut curtain call and some deets about his big night:

Billie Joe Armstrong is not a large man, but he knows how to fill up a stage. Birthed in punk, the Green Day frontman has become a fine rock ‘n’ roll showman. Still, he’s no doubt an artist more used to holding an audience of 20,000 in the palm of his hand than interacting with a cast of professional actors. But on Wednesday night on the stage of the St. James Theatre in New York, he seemed more than comfortable on Broadway, coming off like a pocket-pistol Ethel Merman. Filling in for regular scene-stealer Tony Vincent as St. Jimmy in “American Idiot,” Armstrong had no problem remembering the lyrics, seeing as how he wrote them. As the drug-pushing alter ego of the main character, Johnny, played by Tony-winner John Gallagher Jr., Armstrong did all the choreography and stage business required for the part, including stripping off his shirt and carving a bloody heart into his chest before shooting himself in the head with a toy gun. “Bang!” But his St. Jimmy is a very different animal from Vincent’s, whose sinewy physique menaces with a smoldering sensuality. If Vincent’s St. Jimmy is a starving wolf, Armstrong’s is a rabid mutt, whose brutality is masked by a playful goofiness that makes his needy attachment to Johnny all the more insidious. With his half-shaved head and torn fishnet shirt, Vincent’s Jimmy has an overtly sexual interest in wresting Johnny from the arms of Whatsername (Rebecca Naomi Jones). Whereas Armstrong’s, with his spiked hair and dirty black vest, is more like a demonic Peter Pan, trying to keep Johnny from growing up by sabotaging his one promising relationship. It was fascinating to see how two takes on the same character could be so different and yet so winning in their own ways.

As you may recall, I was able to see Green Day‘s American Idiot on Broadway back in May … and I really, really didn’t like it … at all. That being said, I wish I had been able to see the show with Billie Joe in the lead. I have a feeling that some of the things about the show that rubbed me the wrong way might’ve not existed had I seen Billie Joe in the show. At the very least, I would’ve loved to have seen BJ‘s opening night on Broadway … if only for the kitsch factor. This sounds very cool … and despite the fact that I didn’t care for the show, I’m glad to hear that American Idiot is getting young folks into Broadway theater.

JK Rowling TEASES That She MIGHT Write New ‘Harry Potter’ Books

Posted: 02 Oct 2010 09:21 AM PDT

Harry Potter author JK Rowling appeared on The Oprah Winfrey Show yesterday (for the first and, very likely, the last time ever) to give a little interview to Oprah Winfrey and she teased that she *may* be willing to write new Harry Potter books sometime in the future. Now before y’all get too excited, JK was very clear to say that she didn’t think she’d write the books but said that she *could* write more books … and *may* do so someday:

It is the news all muggles have been waiting for. J.K. Rowling has revealed there may be more Harry Potter books to come after she talked about the ‘bereavement’ she felt completing the seventh and final book, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows. The author said though she couldn’t cope with the overwhelming success of the books, she will miss being ‘consumed’ by the wizardry world and has the future of the characters already mapped out in her head. She said: ‘I could definitely write an eighth, ninth and tenth. I'm not going to say I won't. I don't think I will. I feel I am done, but you never know.’ In her first ever interview with US chat show queen Oprah Winfrey, the author opened up about the emotional 17-year journey spent writing the Potter books and how – without the death of her mother – they may never have existed. She said: ‘The end was huge, like a bereavement. Although I knew it was coming – we all know the people we love are mortal, we know it's going to end – you can't prepare yourself for it. I was in a slight state of shock. Initially I was elated, but then there came a point I cried and I have only ever cried once before in my life – and that was when my mother died. It was uncontrollable and I’m not a big crier. I never told my mother about it, I would have done – I know she would have liked it. But I regret it hugely. The books wouldn't be what they are if she hadn't died. Her death is on virtually every other page of the Harry Potter books. If she hadn't died I don't think it's too strong to say there wouldn't be Harry Potter.’ She revealed how the phenomenon reached such great heights that she was even approached by pop legend Michael Jackson, who wanted to write a musical version of the Harry Potter books – but she turned him down. In the hour-long interview which was broadcast in the US [Friday], she talked openly about how she was ‘hanging by a thread’ due to the success of the books as she struggled to cope with her fame. She said: ‘At the time I felt a need to deny how great the pressure was because that was my way of coping. It happened so fast for me and it shouldn't have happened. This was a children's book. I went from utter obscurity. It was like being a Beatle. At that point I kept saying to people 'Yes I'm coping'. The truth was, there were times when I was barely hanging by a thread’ … Asked if she planned to continue writing, Rowing said: ‘Oh god yes. I literally can't stop. I have to write for my own mental health. I have to do it.’ But she insisted that she felt no pressure to top the success of her Harry Potter series with her next book. ‘I really mean that,’ she said. ‘It was amazing. It was also insane at times and there are parts of that insanity that I'll be quite glad to leave behind.’

While it sounds like JK has not ruled out the possibility of writing another Harry Potter book, my guess is that she prolly will not do so … at least, not for a long time. Actually, it seems more likely to me that she may write the books … and then lock them away for publication many years in the future or, perhaps, after her death? Of course, this is just wild speculation on my part but I can see how any new Harry Potter books might be saved for release in the distant future. To be honest, I’m terribly curious to read new stories from JK Rowling. She is an amazing wordsmith and a very descriptive writer … I can’t wait to read more stories from her. She may never match the success she enjoyed with the Harry Potter books but my guess is her days as a hugely successful author are not over … not by a long shot.

Wonder Woman Is Making Her Return To TV

Posted: 02 Oct 2010 08:13 AM PDT

Wonder Woman, the fictional Amazonian princess who is without a doubt the most iconic female superhero of all time, will be making her return to television 31 years after her last TV series went off the air. The Hollywood Reporter is reporting that Warner Bros. Television has tapped veteran TV show runner David E. Kelly for the task of creating a new, modern TV series devoted to Wonder Woman … and I don’t know if I should be cheering or crying … here are the deets:

Wonder Woman is heading back to the screen but instead of flying to movie theatres, the Amazon princess is returning to television. Warner Bros. Television is developing a modern-day reboot of the classic DC comic book heroine and is lassoing an unlikely talent to potentially write and produce the superhero project: David E. Kelley, the showrunner behind legal dramas such as "Ally McBeal," “Boston Legal” and “The Practice.” The development comes after nearly a decade of attempts by Warner Bros. and producer Joel Silver to launch a big-screen version. Actresses ranging from Angelina Jolie to Beyonce Knowles to Megan Fox have thrown their hat in the ring for the starring role at one time or another. In 2005, Warner Bros. announced Joss Whedon would write and direct the film adaptation. But Whedon said he never ended up being able to finish the draft, and two years later left the project (he’s back in the superhero world, though, prepping “The Avengers” for a winter shoot). “They just didn’t like my take,” Whedon said at the time. “It’s pretty simple.” Any new “Wonder Woman” won’t likely have an easy road to the small screen either. Though the 1975-79 TV series starring Lynda Carter remains the most memorable version of the character in pop culture, major networks have struggled to make female-driven action series work beyond superhero shows work beyond NBC’s “Heroes.” One short-lived title, NBC’s “Bionic Woman,” which was likewise best known for its 1970s TV version, and could haunt attempts to get a series launch. But if any place exists for a female-driven superhero series, it would be in TV land not film … the small-screen has been a more than willing home to "Buffy the Vampire Slayer," a character which first failed as a movie, and "Alias," the spy series which starred Garner. Warner Bros. had no comment.

As some of you know, I am currently in the process of rewatching the entire 1970′s Wonder Woman TV series, which stars the flawless Lynda Carter in the title role, in an effort to rekindle my insane love for the character (I’ve even started wearing my beloved WW watch for the first time since I was 9 years old). I’ve mentioned a few times how much of a fan of Wonder Woman I have been since I was very, very young (without question, she was the first “love” of my life) … so this news is … well, I’m not sure what this news means to me. My first reaction was Yay! Wonder Woman will be back on TV!! My immediate second reaction was, OMG … what if they screw it up?! A very large part of me feels like a new Wonder Woman TV series would be sacrilegious but another part reminds me of the impact the original series had on me as a young child … and hopes the same impact can be made on young children today who might grow up with this new series. As the article above mentions, an attempt has already been made and FAILED to remake the 70′s TV series The Bionic Woman … my fear is that it will be harder to remake a successful show about Wonder Woman and REMAIN TRUE to the character. I will HATE IT if they change the character in order to modernize her. As some of you comic book fans may know, Wonder Woman‘s iconic costume has been radically redesigned for the comic book series … if they try and use that bullshizz in this new TV series, I’ll hate the show right off the bat. And then there’s the casting … I know the focus will be to find a young actress to play the character … unlike Lynda Carter who was mature-enough in the role to give Wonder Woman the strength required of the character. If they go with a 20 year old girl, again, I’ll hate the show right off the bat (in all honesty, I’m not sure I’d be down for a Buffy like version of Wonder Woman). There are so many things that could go wrong with this remake … but if they do it right, it could be a very successful and beloved new series. I’m willing to give this new Wonder Woman the early benefit of the doubt … without question, David E. Kelly is a very successful and talented TV writer/producer and Warner Bros. has always been very respectful of the character. No matter how great this new series is, it will NEVER touch or surpass the original … but a new Wonder Woman for a new era might add another dimension to the iconic character that could breathe new life into the character. Who knows, this new TV series might inspire other young boys to boldly wear Wonder Woman watches to school :) At this point, I’ll remain cautiously optimistic that this new Wonder Woman TV series will be good … I just really hope they do the character right.
