Let Pink Is The New Blog Send You To See ‘No Strings Attached’

Posted: 17 Jan 2011 07:36 PM PST

She just won a Golden Globe — but not for this film. But that doesn’t mean her performance in No Strings Attached, where she plays Ashton Kutcher‘s “friend with benefits”, isn’t award caliber! Yes, I’m talking about the newly pregnant Natalie Portman. And that’s why Pink Is The New Blog teamed up with Paramount Pictures to make sure you and a group of friends get to see the movie for free this weekend. All you have to do? Let me know which celebrity you would choose to have a no string attached relationship with.

In the movie Emma (Natalie Portman) is BFFs with Adam (Ashton Kutcher). But after they spend one morning crossing the line from friendship to … something more … they have to figure out how to keep their friendship intact. Their solution? A “no strings attached” agreement. No flowers. No romanticism. And definitely no jealousy. Can they pull it off?

Find out this weekend, when I send you to the movie! But first you have to tell me: Which celebrity — actor, musician, reality TV star — would you want to have the type of no strings attached relationship that Emma and Adam are attempting? You know, the type of regular hook-up situation that doesn’t require you to make breakfast in the morning. Leave your answer in the comments, and be sure to explain why. Also: Be sure you post your comment with a valid email address, because I have to know how to contact you with your free movies tickets ($50 in Fandango Bucks).

So go on, tell me and Pink readers: Who do you want to have a NSA arrangement with?

No Strings Attached hits theaters this Friday, January 21. Make sure Pink Is The New Blog is the one to send you!

VISIT NO STRINGS ATTACHED ON FACEBOOK AND CHECK OUT NOSTRINGSATTACHED.COM.

No purchase necessary. Void where prohibited. Standard contest rules apply. Winner must be 18 or over. One winner will be selected to win a $50 Fandango.com gift certificate.

Hugh Jackman Really Knows How To Sell Lipton Iced Tea

Posted: 17 Jan 2011 04:16 PM PST

Last year Lipton Iced Tea released an amazing commercial in Japan that features Hugh Jackman as the company’s global spokesman. Because the ad does not air here in the US, I hadn’t seen the clip before. Pink reader Caitlin sent me a link to the Lipton commercial and it has to be one of the coolest things I’ve ever laid my eyes on.

Not only does Hugh look pretty while he drinks Lipton Iced Tea but he also shows what an amazing dancer he is … for real. Check out the commercial in full and see for yourselves:

A.Maz.Ing. Man, I wish we would get to see commercials like this here in the US … Hugh Jackman is just … THE BEST EVER! I love this so much … many thanks to Caitlin for the head’s up.

Natalie Portman Has A Really Terrible Laugh

Posted: 17 Jan 2011 03:32 PM PST

First, I must preface this entire post by saying that I LOVE Natalie Portman, she is my pick as the Best Actress at all the awards shows this season and I couldn’t be happier for all the success — both personal and professional — that she is enjoying these days. That being said, dear sweet Natalie (bless her soul) has one of THE most awkward and cringe-worthy laughs that I have had the misfortune to bear witness to on national television. During her acceptance speech last night at the 2011 Golden Globe Awards, Natalie tried to make a joke about how her fiancée wants to have sex with her (which is obvious due to the fact that she is pregs with his baby) and laughed so awkwardly, so terrifyingly at her own joke that it still haunts me today.

While Ricky Gervais gave us the best 5 minutes of the Golden Globes last night, Natalie Portman gave us the most terrifying 5 seconds:

Again, I love the girl with all my heart but WOW … that laugh. While I absolutely want her to win every award she gets nominated for, I am hoping against hope (praying, actually) that Nat will refrain from telling and laughing at her own jokes in her future acceptance speeches. I damn near crawled into a hole out of embarrassment for her last night … I’m not sure my frail little heart could take much more. Yikes!

Nicole Kidman & Keith Urban Welcome The Birth Of A Baby Girl

Posted: 17 Jan 2011 01:36 PM PST

Um … got some surprising news for all y’all today … TMZ is reporting that Nicole Kidman and Keith Urban, who were both in attendance at the 2011 Golden Globe Awards last night, are the proud parents of a newborn baby girl who was birthed in Nashville, TN last month! The couple are the biological parents of their new baby who was born via surrogate mother! They had a baby, y’all!!

Nicole Kidman and Keith Urban have a new baby, courtesy of a surrogate … TMZ has learned. Sources tell us … the baby was born at Centennial Medical Center in Nashville on December 28, 2010. Her name is Faith. Kidman and Urban are Faith’s biological parents. We’re told Nicole and Keith went into the hospital on the down low last week, visiting Faith and the surrogate during her stay. They entered the hospital through the back, took the service elevator to the top floor, which they rented exclusively for themselves. We’re told the baby is home … Keith and Nicole just released a statement to TMZ saying, “Our family is truly blessed, and just so thankful, to have been given the gift of baby Faith Margaret. No words can adequately convey the incredible gratitude that we feel for everyone who was so supportive throughout this process, in particular our gestational carrier.”

Yay!! Congrats and WTF? are in order for the happy new parents … I mean, first — yes, I am very happy to hear of the newest addition to the Kidman-Urban family but … secondly, WTF? This news is seemingly out of left field. I don’t think the couple gave any inkling that they were having another child via surrogate so, yeah, this is a shock. Still, I am so happy that Nicole and Keith are new parents again (and that their other daughter Sunday Rose has a new little sister). Let’s send all our love and congrats their way today.

But still … WTF?

Britney Spears Breaks Records, Debuts At #1 On The ‘Billboard’ Chart

Posted: 17 Jan 2011 01:19 PM PST

The day after Britney Spears‘s new single Hold It Against Me became available for sale on iTunes, it rocketed to the #1 spot in 19 countries. Today, Billboard magazine safely predicts that the song will debut in the #1 spot atop their Hot 100 Singles Chart after it set a new record for radio airplay. As if the obvious needs restating, Britney Spears‘s new single is a smash MONSTER hit.

s forecast after its massive first-day airplay, Britney Spears’ “Hold It Against Me” roars to a record-setting debut on Billboard’s Pop Songs chart. The first single from Spears’ forthcoming ninth album storms the survey at No. 16 with 4,071 plays, the highest detections total by a debuting title in the chart’s 18-year history. “Hold It Against Me” also ties Madonna’s “Frozen” (No. 16, March 7, 1998) for second-highest launch in the list’s archives. Only Mariah Carey’s “Dreamlover” began at a higher rank, having rocketed in at No. 12 the week of Aug. 14, 1993. “Hold It Against Me” received airplay on all 130 reporting stations in the chart’s tracking week (Jan. 10-16). The song’s first-week airplay translates to 36.4 million listener impressions, the week’s 10th-highest mainstream top 40 audience total. KHOP (@95-1)/Modesto, Calif., led all pop reporters with 104 opening-week plays. “Over the last decade, Britney Spears has had her ups and downs. But, every time she drops new music, it is an event for the format,” says KHOP program director MoJoe Roberts … “Audience reaction to her new single has been nothing short of amazing. This is another pure pop smash from Ms. Spears.” The cut concurrently debuts on Dance Airplay at No. 24, Rhythmic (No. 37) and Adult Pop Songs (No. 40). “Hold It Against Me” is likely to make further historic headlines this week when it’s expected to become just the 18th song to debut at No. 1 since the Billboard Hot 100 began in 1958. As previously reported, the song is projected to exceed 400,000 in first-week download sales, according to industry sources.

The song is released in the UK today and Britney‘s manager Adam Leber has been teasing fans on Twitter about the upcoming music video:

@TheDoctorLuke Never thought you and #MaxMartin would beat HIAM but I think the impossible has been achieved. Get ready world….. / FYI- HIAM is available for purchase in the UK tomorrow (1/17/11) / OK, OK its 4:13 AM in the UK. I get it, I get it. It’s barely 1/17. We’re busy working on the HIAM video over here. Cut us some slack…. / HIAM Video details coming tomorrow….

SMASH MONSTER HIT! And she’s only just begun. I can’t WAIT to hear the rest of Britney‘s new album, due out on March 15, but first up … the music video for Hold It Against Me. Britney is SO back, y’all. Woot!!!

Hollywood Foreign Press Association President Says Ricky Gervais ‘Crossed The Line’

Posted: 17 Jan 2011 12:57 PM PST

Earlier today I posted amazingly funny video of Ricky Gervais‘s brilliant opening monologue as host of the 2011 Golden Globe Awards last night and mentioned that the comic is taking a bit of heat from the celebs he skewered on live television today. The Hollywood Reporter nabbed an interview with Philip Berk, the president of the Hollywood Foreign Press Association (the ones who award the Golden Globes) and he has gone on the record to say that Gervais “definitely crossed the line” with the jokes he delivered last night. Which means, uh oh, Ricky Gervais is in trouble, y’all.

Add Hollywood Foreign Press Association president Philip Berk to the chorus of those who believe that Ricky Gervais went too far as host of the Golden Globes on Sunday night. The head of the group responsible for the awards show says that while he felt the show itself was “terrific,” he too felt that Gervais’ jokes about specific celebrities were too much. “He definitely crossed the line,” Berk tells The Hollywood Reporter. “And some of the things were totally unacceptable. But that’s Ricky.” “Any of the references to individuals is certainly not something the Hollywood Foreign Press condones,” he added. Robert Downey Jr. – the butt of one of Gervais’ jokes – said the show was “hugely mean-spirited with mildly sinister undertones.” Gervais went after Berk personally with this joke when introducing him saying, “I just had to help him off the toilet and pop his teeth in." While Berk traditionally vets every word of the Globes’ script, he says that Gervais does not allow that pre-show scrutiny as host. “That’s not how Ricky works,” he says. “I had absolutely no idea what Ricky was going to say so anything I heard was heard was the same time you heard it,” Berk says. “When you hire Ricky Gervais, you expect the unexpected.” PHOTOS: Golden Globes Red Carpet Style. As for rumors that Gervais was lectured during the show or kept from reappearing at key moments, Berk dismissed them as “ridiculous.” “It was always planned that in the section of important awards he was not going to be part of (the show),” says Berk. “He was never called on the carpet, or given a warning or anything else.” Berk would not comment whether he would recommend to the membership to have Gervais back next year as host.

Give me a mothereffing BREAK! I am so irritated that this idiocy is an actual story the morning after one of THE most entertaining awards shows that Hollywood has seen in years. I do not understand FOR A SECOND how all of these babies in Hollywood can’t laugh at themselves for one damn second! I never once thought Gervais was being “mean” … he was telling jokes! Funny jokes, by the way … not the shitty lame ass jokes that usually get tossed around at these boring ass awards shows. Hands down, Ricky Gervais was the best Golden Globes host that I think I’ve ever seen. The man was funny … IT’S FUNNY TO POKE FUN AT YOU, CELEBRITIES … get the eff over yourselves and have a laugh. To be honest, all of this bullshizz will only elevate Gervais further into hero status. Even if celebs can’t laugh at themselves, the least they can do is shut up about it and move on. The more they bitch about how “mean” Ricky Gervais was, the more moronic they look … and better Ricky looks above all. I’m Team Ricky, y’all. He is SO the man right now.

In case you missed it or just want to watch it again, you can click HERE to watch Ricky Gervais‘s full HILARIOUS Golden Globes opening monologue.

Meet Daphne

Posted: 17 Jan 2011 12:39 PM PST

Last night I made my way to Ollie and Caleb’s kickass downtown apartment for an impromptu Golden Globes watch party to hang out with a few Turtle Partiers. David, bless his heart, was a bit tuckered from our previous night’s festivities so he regretfully had to refrain from coming with. While watching the Golden Globes was the main event of the night (we were ALL excited for Trent Reznor‘s big win!!!) I was very excited to finally get to meet Ollie and Caleb’s new baby … their puppy Daphne.

Is this not the cutest pooch you’ve ever seen? She is such a doll … so well behaved and just a lovable, lovable dog. After we finished watching the awards, some of the group splintered off and went home … but I stayed for a while longer to listen to music with Ollie, Caleb and Daphne. ‘Twas a really fun night with friends :)

Tonight, I have plans to hang out with another group of friends … so that should be fun, too. I hope all y’all are enjoying your Mondays today :)

David Beckham Gets Crucified In A Controversial New Painting

Posted: 17 Jan 2011 10:46 AM PST

UK artist Johnny Cotter got himself into a bit of trubs with the police in England recently after some people filed complaints about a painting on display in Folkestone, Kent that is titled Listen to Me and Not to Them. In the painting, David Beckham is nailed to a cross in a Jesus-like pose while wearing a red English football jersey along side a pair of soccer trophies. According to Cotter, the painting is not meant to be “anti-Christian” and is only meant to comment artistically on 21st Century worship. In case you’ve yet to see the painting in full, you can see the very striking full size image below.

A painting depicting David Beckham being crucified was at the centre of a police investigation today. Officers visited the Johnny Cotter Gallery in Folkestone, Kent, to interview the artist behind the image entitled Listen to me and not to them. In it, Beckham, wearing a red long-sleeve England football shirt and a loin cloth, appears bleeding and nailed to the Cross by his hands and feet. The footballer is seen wearing a crown of thorns and has the current Fifa World Cup trophy at his feet, next to what appears to be the old Jules Rimet trophy. Artist Mr Cotter who created the work said two police officers visited him and told him there had been a complaint that it was causing offence. He agreed to take it down but was last night contacting police again to see under what law they acted. He said: ‘This is not an anti-Christian painting. The point of it is to question who we worship in the 21st century. Is it God or is it people like David Beckham or reality TV stars who get paid millions and are looked up to. I chose Beckham because he is a modern day icon and known the world over. I am commenting on the cult of modern day celebrity. Who do we really worship in the 21st Century? In fact the local vicar told me I have done more to open up debate in Folkestone on religion than anyone else for 30 years. I have had complaints but they are outnumbered by the people who have admired it.’ The painting has been on show since November. He said Boy George had been in touch to see if he could acquire the work. The artist said: ‘The painting appeared in my window the day I opened and I had a small doorstep protest, bibles pushed through my letterbox and various notes and letters condemning me and telling me to turn away from the devil. I have tried to explain its not a religious piece but a thought provoking piece of modern day art.’ A Kent Police spokesman said: ‘Two officers visited the art gallery and explained there had been a complaint. When the owner said the work in question was due to be taken down at the end of the week it was decided no further action would be taken.’

Yes, the subject matter of this painting is sure to be controversial to some and deeply offensive to others but art is meant to spark visceral reactions from the viewer. I’m not sure I understand what reason the police have to order that a painting be taken down from an art gallery but it seems wrong to me. Art is meant to inspire, question and sometimes offend. Is this a painting that I would hang up in my own home? No it is not. Is it a painting that I think needs to be censored or removed from sight? Absolutely not. What do y’all think? In light of the painting’s explained meaning, do you think it should be removed from gallery display? Are you offended by the sight of David Beckham being crucified in this way?

Sandra Bullock Says That She & Ryan Reynolds Are NOT ‘Lovahs’

Posted: 17 Jan 2011 10:28 AM PST

After reports surfaced that Sandra Bullock and the newly single Ryan Reynolds celebrated New Year’s Eve together in Austin, TX, tongues began to wag feverishly that the couple had become romantically involved. Last night Sandra set the record straight on the red carpet of the 2011 Golden Globe Awards and officially made clear that she and Ryan are NOT romantically involved.

There’s only one man in Sandra Bullock’s life right now – her son, Louis. In an interview with Today’s Al Roker, Bullock made it clear that rumors of her and newly single Ryan Reynolds being an item aren’t true. “I think there will be a collective sigh amomgst women across the united States when I say he’s not my lovah,” Bullock, 46, says on the red carpet before Sunday night’s Golden Globes. “He’s just an amazing friend for 10 years … but I don’t get his loving after dark.” Bullock, who is currently working on Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close with Tom Hanks, added Louis is the only man in her life right now, saying “it’s all I can handle.” And as for her 1-year-old, romance is a few years off: He is “off the market ’til he is 18,” she says.

And that should settle that … for a few minutes at least. Look, I get that Sandra and Ryan are friends … BFFs even … but they have to know that if they want to hang out together, people will want to believe that they are romantically involved … particularly because they look so good together and they seem to have genuine chemistry together. I, personally, would LOVE if they got together. Besides, just because they are friends now and nothing romantic is going on … now … that doesn’t mean that things can’t change in the future. What I hope DOES change in the future is Sandra‘s hairstyle because I am NOT feelin’ her severe bangs. But, that is neither here nor there. To reiterate, Sandra says that she and Ryan are not “lovahs” but … we’ll just have to wait and see if things don’t change in the near future ;)

Robert Pattinson Gets Bloodied On The Set Of ‘Water For Elephants’

Posted: 17 Jan 2011 10:12 AM PST

On Saturday we saw a few photos of Robert Pattinson (and co-star Reese Witherspoon) on the SoCal set of their film Water for Elephants filming a few reshoots for the movie and yesterday we learned that the reshoots have something to do with a “surprise” ending (which may be different from the book?). Today we get to see new photos of R. Pattz lookin’ bloody and beat to Hell on the set … might this have something to do with the film’s new ending?

Now, because I have not read the book that his movie is based on (I know, I know … many of you are adamant that I read the book before the movie comes out) I don’t know if this bloody look is in the book or if it’s something added to the film for the reported “surprise” ending. Whatever the case may be, even tho I know it’s fake, doesn’t R. Pattz look so vulnerable and in need of some love? I wonder if there is anyone out there who wouldn’t mind being put to the task of caring for this bloody-looking Robert Pattinson. He sure looks like he could use a hug, don’t he? Would any of you mind obliging the poor guy?

The 2011 Golden Globe Awards Are Handed Out

Posted: 17 Jan 2011 09:30 AM PST

Celebs from film and television made their way out to The Beverly Hilton Hotel in Beverly Hills, CA last night to attend the 2011 Golden Globe Awards. When host Ricky Gervais wasn’t brilliantly and hilariously skewering the folks in the audience, Golden Globe awards were being handed out to some lucky winners. Many of the awards went to the film The Social Network and the TV series Glee … but there were a few other winners as well.

Facebook film “The Social Network” picked up four Golden Globe Awards on Sunday, including best film drama, making it a front-runner in Hollywood’s Oscar race. “Social Network” picked up the best director award for David Fincher, best screenplay for writer Aaron Sorkin and best musical score for its music, written by Nine Inch Nails frontman Trent Reznor. The film recounts the story of the founding of social networking site Facebook, an international phenomenon with millions of users that started in a college dormitory. Accepting the Golden Globe, producer Scott Rudin called the movie “a metaphor for communication and the way we relate to each other.” Another winner of some big awards was “The Kids Are All Right,” which featured two lesbian parents whose children search for their sperm donor father. “Kids” also picked up the award for best actress in a film comedy for its star Annette Bening, who portrayed one of the mothers in the film. British actor Colin Firth was named best actor in a film drama for his portrayal of stuttering King George VI in “The King’s Speech,” while Natalie Portman took home the Golden Globe trophy for best actress in a drama with “Black Swan.” Paul Giamatti won the prize for best actor in a comedy film for his role as a caustic man in “Barney’s Version.” The Golden Globe Awards, which are given out by the nearly 90 members of the HFPA, are one of the major Hollywood award shows leading to the film industry’s most-prized honors, the Oscars, which are handed out by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. Many film industry watchers look at the winners of Golden Globes and other honors for clues as to which films, performers, directors and writers might win Oscars. This year, “Social Network” has swept many early honors and added the Golden Globe to its cache of trophies. In other movie honors, boxing drama “The Fighter” picked up two Golden Globes for Christian Bale as supporting actor portraying a drug-addicted fighter and for Melissa Leo as supporting actress playing the mother of Christian Bale’s character. “Toy Story 3″ was named best animated movie for what director Lee Unkrich called “”an animated movie that beat with a human heart.” And Denmark’s “In a Better World” was named best foreign language film.

In the TV categories, Glee and Glee‘s Chris Colfer won awards while Katey Sagal (Sons of Anarchy) and Jim Parsons (The Big Bang Theory) took home awards of their own. I believe the Golden Globes are the last of the big awards shows to honor television accomplishments (until the Emmy Awards are given out in the Fall) so from here on out it’ll be all about the movies … and, if the trend continues, it’ll be all about The Social Network. Here are some photos of some of last night’s winners in the press room posing with their new trophies:

I LOVE that Colin Firth (The King’s Speech) won as well as Black Swan‘s Natalie Portman (tho, her acceptance speech was SO awkward and just … bad … I can’t even deal) but the biggest win for ME was Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross‘s win for their work scoring The Social Network.

All of these wins bode very well for the coming Academy Awards. I have many favorites this year but the only win I’m really pulling for is the Oscar for TRez. Click HERE to see who else took home Golden Globe Awards last night. What did y’all think of the show overall? Did you enjoy? Did your faves win?

Jake Gyllenhaal Back With Ex-Girlfriend Jenny Lewis?

Posted: 17 Jan 2011 08:45 AM PST

Yesterday we saw photos of Jake Gyllenhaal out and about in West Hollywood, CA this weekend enjoying a leisurely breakfast with an older woman on Saturday morning. But by Sunday afternoon, Jake had traded that older woman for a much younger woman picked to be his date to the Golden Globe Awards last night. Jake didn’t bring just any ol’ chick to the fete with him, no siree, he asked his ex-girlfriend (and Rilo Kiley frontwoman) Jenny Lewis to accompany him. Might the ex-lovers be sparking up a new relationship together?

Jake Gyllenhaal definitely has a thing for blondes, but there is one redhead who remains near and dear to his heart: Jenny Lewis … The former child actress, who has become a singing indie rock favorite by fronting band Rilo Kiley and releasing two solo albums, has remained friends with the Globe nominee, even after moving on and dating other people. Back in 2009, Gyllenhaal, 30, caught Lewis’s set at the Coachella Valley Music & Arts Festival with then girlfriend Reese Witherspoon. Later that year Lewis, who is currently dating fellow musician Johnathan Rice, hung out with the couple after her concert at the Hollywood Bowl. And Gyllenhaal wore a sweatshirt with Lewis’s face on it while exiting a gym in Studio City last June. Sunday night, they were back to supporting one another with Lewis on Gyllenhaal’s arm at the Golden Globes. With his short-lived romance with Taylor Swift on everyone’s mind, who says ex’s can’t be friends?

So … Jenny is currently attached to another dude … and yet, Jake and Jenny made sure NOT to be photographed too close to one another. The couple made sure not to pose for any photos together, nor were they seen holding hands or touching in anyway. The only photos of the pair together were taken at a distance or accidentally when the pair stepped into the same frame. HMMMM. Friends? More than friends? Whatever the case may be, I’m quite certain that nothing about any of this is sitting well with Taylor Swift today. HMMMM.

Watch: Ricky Gervais Brilliantly Skewers Hollywood As Host Of The Golden Globe Awards

Posted: 17 Jan 2011 08:07 AM PST

British comedian Ricky Gervais served as host of the 2011 Golden Globe Awards here in Hollywood, CA last night and during his opening monologue to kick off the show he expertly, brilliantly and unapologetically skewered as many celebs in the audience as possible with joke after joke after joke. He managed to get a few uncomfortable laughs from the audience but it was his Scientology joke that garnered the most groans. For me, Gervais made the Golden Globe Awards worth watching … and he had me in stitches the entire night. His opening monologue is an absolute must see.

This, my friends, is comedy. Gervais‘s monologue was so brilliant, IMHO, because it’s not the kind of thing we ever get to hear from awards show hosts … but they are the jokes that WE ALL make to one another as fans of celebrity and pop culture. Jokes are meant to be funny, Ricky Gervais‘s jokes were hilarious. Mission: Accomplished.

It remains to be seen if the Hollywood Powers that Be were really offended by Ricky‘s performance last night but I hope they can see the humor and laugh at themselves. I, for one, would love to see Ricky Gervais host every single awards show here in the US from now til the end of time. I guess we’ll have to wait and see if he ever gets a hosting gig like this every again.

So … what did y’all think of Ricky‘s jokes last night? Funny or much too much?

Apple CEO Steve Jobs Takes Another Medical Leave Of Absence

Posted: 17 Jan 2011 07:44 AM PST

Two years ago, Apple CEO Steve Jobs shocked the tech world by announcing that he would be taking a medical leave of absence from his duties at Apple and ended up staying away from the company for 6 months before returning to the job looking much skinnier than he did before (due to a liver transplant). Since his return, Jobs has been operating as CEO as usual, seemingly back to his old self. Today, Jobs has announced that he will be taking another medical leave of absence by issuing a statement that gives no information at all as to why the leave is necessary.

Apple CEO Steve Jobs will take another medical leave of absence beginning on Monday, two years after a six-month sabbatical during which he received a liver transplant. Tim Cook, Apple’s chief operating officer, will take over the company’s day-to-day operations in Jobs’ stead, as he did during Jobs’ last leave of absence.

“At my request, the board of directors has granted me a medical leave of absence so I can focus on my health,” Jobs told Apple employees in an internal memo. “I will continue as CEO and be involved in major strategic decisions for the company. I love Apple so much and hope to be back as soon as I can. In the meantime, my family and I would deeply appreciate respect for our privacy.”

Jobs, who is 55 years old, gave no timetable for his return, but noted that Cook would execute the “plans the company has in place for 2011″ … Jobs did not appear at a Verizon (VZ, Fortune 500) event last week at which the wireless company announced that it would begin carrying the iPhone in February. His last Apple press conference was in mid-July, following the “antennagate” controversy that had many iPhone 4 owners complaining about lost reception when they held their phones a certain way. In the press conference, Jobs offered a free case to anyone who bought an iPhone 4 in the first three months it was on sale. Two of his last public appearances took place on Oct. 7, when the CEO attended a ceremony commemorating a California bill that created an organ donor registry. He followed that with an appearance at an awards event hosted by the Wireless History Foundation. An anticipated public appearance by Jobs was scheduled for this week, as News Corp. was expected to unveil The Daily, an iPad-only news magazine. That event was postponed on Friday, but it is not clear if that had anything to do with Jobs’ health situation.

It should come as no surprise that Jobs is not being forthcoming about his reasons for taking this medical leave of absence. He is a fiercely private man when it comes to his health. It stands to reason, tho, to assume that Jobs may be in need of a medical procedure just as significant as a liver transplant … after all, he is very devoted to his work at Apple and, IMHO, only the most serious of circumstances could pull him away from his duties at Apple. Whatever is going on with Steve Jobs, I wish him a speedy return to his work at Apple and I’m sending all my best wishes his way as he deals with whatever medical procedure(s) he may be dealing with.

Remember The Dream This Martin Luther King, Jr. Day

Posted: 17 Jan 2011 07:31 AM PST

Today is Martin Luther King, Jr. Day here in the US and I think it is the perfect time to remember the life and work of the revolutionary MLK by spending a bit of time listening to, remembering and taking to heart the words of his iconic I Have A Dream speech.

While countless folks are able to take this “day off” and turn it into a “day on” of volunteer service to their community, there are many still who can’t be afforded the time off (for whatever reasons). Hopefully even those people, tho, can devote a bit of their day listening to Dr. King‘s I Have A Dream speech in tribute to the man’s life work … which continues today. Happy MLK Day, y’all … keep the Dream alive!
