16 Former Child Actors Who Made it to Adulthood Without Imploding

Posted: 12 Jun 2011 10:15 AM PDT

Child acting is a tenuous thing. It’s difficult to tell when actors are very young whether or not they’ve actually got talent, and sometimes, being exposed to the Hollywood life at an early age can do weird things to a person. But for every one that implodes (I’m looking at you, Lindsay Lohan) or falls into obscurity (Jake Lloyd, much?), there’s also one that manages to make the transition from child to adult actor. It’s not always seamless, and sometimes there are demons to fight; but a lot of them do come out just fine on the other side. Here are 16 of our favorites.

Sunday Cute: Mutant Bunny Has No Ears

Posted: 12 Jun 2011 07:15 AM PDT

This bunny was born near Japan’s Fukushima power plant. He also has no ears. We’re not really sure if these two facts are connected or just coincidence, but one thing IS for sure: Having no ears does not make this bunny any less cute. Let’s have a shout out for the world’s first X-Bunny.

Happy Sunday!

Creepy Things That Seem Real But Aren’t: Tales of the Silver Screen

Posted: 12 Jun 2011 09:12 AM PDT

Creepy Things That Seem Real But Aren't is a series that explores modern urban legends, bringing you a new tale each week.

When it comes to unsettling stories, a little truth goes a long way. Something can be 99 percent false, but if there’s one little bit of reality somewhere within it, it immediately becomes terrifying. You know it’s fiction… and yet, there’s a little tiny voice niggling at the back of your mind telling you that it could be true, that it happen you. Nowhere is this more powerful than in movies. This Friday, Super 8 joined the collection of cinematic tales floating around out there that manage to capture something in its footage that maybe– just MAYBE– could be real. In honor of it, let’s play a little game this week: I’ll tell you a few tales; you guess what they are. They’re all stories you’ll know, if you dig deep enough in that place in your brain that locks away the things that frighten you. Ready? Here we go…

The Tale:
It is 1938. The world is still recovering from the aftermath of one World War, and a second looms on the horizon. You into the news on the radio nightly, trying to stay on top of tumult the world is currently going through. But tonight, it’s different. In a small town in New Jersey, a meteorite has plummeted from the sky and landed in the middle of a field. But it isn’t just any meteorite; it is cylindrical, an extremely odd shape for a meteorite to be. Furthermore, to the surprise of the onlookers, the meteorite opens… and something begins to emerge. Panic. Flames. The broadcast is cut off. And you know then and there that something isn’t coming; it’s already here.

And it’s happening right. Now.

Video: Old-Fashioned Nostalgia With ‘Killer Tofu’

Posted: 11 Jun 2011 01:15 PM PDT

It is unlikely that you will find anyone that disagrees with the following statement: The original Doug was awesome. It was awesome for many reasons, and one of those reasons was Doug’s favorite fictional band, the Beets. Among their many hits was the slightly nonsensical “Killer Tofu,” and it is this which I offer forth for your listening pleasure today. YouTube user LordoftheJimmy has taken Beatles-esque anthem we all know and love and given it new life. He’s left the vocals intact, but there’s new drums, bass, keyboards and guitars, as well as a badass guitar solo. Oh, and the video’s pretty cool, too. Everyone sing along with me, now!

8 New Summer TV Shows to Watch Out For

Posted: 11 Jun 2011 11:50 AM PDT

Remember the days when summer was a waste land for television, where all that could be found for miles were reruns of reruns of reruns? Well, no more! In recent years, the television industry finally figured out that summer was a great time to run actual seasons, so now there’s plenty to look forward to. But while some of the usual suspects are returning– True Blood, Weeds, Burn Notice, Futurama, and so on– there’s also some new blood in town. Here’s a handy guide to eight of the new shows premiering this summer that look like they’ll be worth keeping an eye on:

1) Falling Skies
In Falling Skies, aliens have invaded Earth, and Earth lost. A handful of survivors, which includes Noah Wyle as a former college professor (history, naturally), now find themselves forming a de facto military, fighting to take back the planet. IGN has managed to get a hold of the first couple of episodes, and they like what they’ve seen; they describe it as a sort of alien invasion version of The Walking Dead. Falling Skies airs on TNT Sundays at 10pm starting June 19.

2) Alphas
This new series has been compared to both X-Men and Heroes– we can only hope that they mean the first season and not the travesties that followed– in that it gathers together a group of superhuman individuals working for the powers of good and pits them against other, eviler superhuman individuals. Now, SyFy is not generally known for the worth of its original movies (true story: I know a guy who was actually in Supergater), but its televisions generally tend to be rather good. Eureka and Warehouse 13 are also both coming back this summer, so it’s possible that SyFy may be the place to be. Alphas premieres Monday, July 11 at 10pm.
