INSIDE FASHION WEEK: YBF Designer Edwing D'Angelo Talks Tyra Banks, His Eclectic Style And Pushing The Envelope

Posted: 16 Sep 2011 06:39 AM PDT

In part three (the final part) of our in-depth coverage of NYC's fashion week and up-and-coming designers, TheYBF.com spoke exclusively with designer Edwing D'Angelo, a 10-year vet of the fashion industry, who's known for his eclectic and boundary pushing style.  Tyra Banks is a huge supporter and he is someone you should keep your eyes on.

Come inside and meet Edwing D'Angelo.

Edwing D'Angelo, Edwing D'Angelo

Edwing D'Angelo is a name bantered around chic NY fashion circles of fabulous go-getters and attention seekers.  He may have been in the gane a long time, but he's still waiting on his chance to become a household name.  The Colombian born designer, who describes his label as "Elegant, Eclectic and Chic," counts Tyra Banks as one of his biggest cheerleaders.

The Harlem-based designer says his Edwing D'Angelo collection is not designed for the timid. "It's for those who want to be the center of attention."  He adds that his line pushes boundaries and is perfectly made for the consumer who strives for excellence and likes to stand out.  Here's our chat:

On his 2012 collection

As he celebrates 10-years in the industry, Edwing says a large part of his collection was inspired by Tyra Banks' love of his menswear and its fitted lines and structure.  He says the supermodel, is a true gem, who doesn't use her celebrity to take advantage of young designers.  She's bought and PAID for many items from his line, and she wore one of his looks at the 2011 CW Upfronts.

He adds that his admiration of First Lady Michelle Obama also drove the collection, aptly named "A New Perspective." It focuses on ready-to-wear separates that are elegant and daring.

On his experience at Fashion Week

As he shoots a documentary focusing on his 10-year anniversary, Edwing jokes that his first showing at fashion week was in the available office space of a chiropractor's office on 28th street.  But since then, he's shown at a wide range of chic venues, including the Waldorf Astoria Hotel.

He credits his showings at fashion week as good teaching tools for how to structure a design company.  He says he learned  that there is more to running you own label than just putting out "a pretty dress."

On advice to upcoming designers

Edwing says that success is 10% creativity and 90% business.  He says persons interested in the business show know how to run a company. "You won’t succeed unless you know how to run a business.  You have to make a pretty dress but also understand how to make the dress reach millions of consumers."

On what inspires him

As a Latin designer who lives in Harlem, he says the different flavors of culture, food, and music offer him a lot on inspiration.

On what's NEXT

Edwing revealed exclusively to TheYBF.com that he is opening a flagship boutique in Atlanta, GA very soon. He also shared that he is working on a line of accessories and had other expansions in the works.

VIDEO FAB: Frank Ocean's "Swim Good" + Diggy Simmons' "Just Begun" Single

Posted: 16 Sep 2011 06:18 AM PDT

Odd Future's Frank Ocean has dropped a cinematic video for his latest single "Swim Good" and it involves a pimped-out orange Lincoln limosine! See the clip inside and listen to Diggy Simmon's latest single "Just Begun."

Frank Ocean delivers a beautifully made video for for “Swim Good,” off his debut Nostalgia, Ultra. In the clip,  a sneaker-wearing samurai, who drives an orange Lincoln limousine, seduces a female with his ummm......sword.

Towards the end, the samurai even sets fire to his vehicle and watches it burn to a crisp. I'm sure there is a metaphor there.

Watch Frank Ocean's "Swim Good" video here:

Also in music......

Diggy Simmons is sending out warning shots to nay-sayers who don't think the young rap prodigy can hold his own in the game.

With his new D’Mile-produced track “Just Begun,” he let's fans and foes know he has the talent to back up his famous last name and he takes his lyrics seriously. Check out the track above.

INSIDE FASHION WEEK: Up & Coming YBF Designer Shauntele OPENS UP About Femininity, Her Modern Style AND Dressing Royalty

Posted: 15 Sep 2011 12:00 PM PDT

In part 2 of our 3-part New York Fashion Week focus on the up and coming YBF fashion designers, we chatted with an uber fabulous YBF chick you need to know about. TheYBF.com talked to Shauntele, an designer who focuses on beautiful clothes for women of all sizes. And she's already dressed well-heeled socialites like Ivanka Trump.

Come inside to meet Shauntele...

Shauntele, The Shauntele Woman

Describing her design house consumer as "The Shauntele Woman," Brooklyn-native Shauntele has created a brand for women who are powerful and feminine.  With her design house known for its wide span of beautiful colors and textures, the range of size 0-18 garments, and pieces for women who need to have an array of ready-to-wear cocktail dress & casual business attire.

Her highly tailored garments have impressed a wide spectrum of women, including royalty.   Princess Amira of Saudi Arabia is a fan, as is socialite and business woman Ivanka Trump (Shauntele was her classmate at the exclusive boarding school, Choate Rosemary Hall!).  Here's a recap from our quick chat with her:

-On "The Shauntele Woman"

"The Shauntele Woman is feminine and powerful. She knows that you have to look great no matter where you are…it's part of our power as women." She also adds that The Shauntele Woman is one who buys beautifully made garments that she'll "one day she will pay onto her daughter" because they are timeless.

-On her 2012 collection

"My collection strives to make womenswear that is classic and interesting. I focus on classics shapes and use a wide array of colors to make them modern.  It's about finding ways to accentuate the female frame and make beautiful clothes that reach out to a wide range of women."

On her experience at Fashion Week

She made her first showing in 2008 with 10 pieces.  After the collection was praise for her use of color, she found the "color" was her strength and at every showing since then, she has made the bold use of color her signature.  She adds that showing at Fashion eek is important for upcoming Black designers to showcase that "we" do exist and to serve as an inspiration to the next generation.

- On what inspires her

"Music is what inspires me."  Shauntele (who had recorded music with Soul II Soul) says that "sounds" motivates her sketches.  She turns to everything from classic reggae to underground hip hop and R&B to find inspiration.  She adds that this year's collection was inspired by the music of Little Dragon, a Swedish electronic band.

-On celebrities she'd love to design for

Kerry Washington and Scarlett Johansson are my top two.

- On making any outfit fabulous

"You can make any outfit fabulous by adding a smile...but I also believe in a good heel!"

Check out more of Shauntele over at her website and see some of her previous designs in the photo gallery.

Mary J. Blige COVERS The October 2011 Of "EBONY", SPEAKS On Child Abuse & Her Marriage

Posted: 15 Sep 2011 10:25 AM PDT

Mary J. Blige covers the October 2011 issue of "EBONY" Magazine where she opens up about her be abused, drug use and rumors about a "rocky" marriage.  Get the deets and both of her covers inside....

As she celebrates 40-years of life, Mary J. Blige has reached a point of reflection and she talks candidly about it in the October issue of "EBONY."  The two covers will go separately to the subscribers and one for the shelves.

“I’m forty and really loving it. Forty feels so, so good,” she told the mag in a wide-ranging interview.

She says that while her album, My Life, focused on depression, her 10th album, My Life II: The Journey Continues “is about coming out of that hole and realizing that even when you’re happy, you, won’t be everyday.”

And that also extends to marriage.  The singer spoke about her own relationship saying,

“We have disagreements … marriage is wonderful, and marriage is very hard … if you are with the right person, the work is worth it.”

And in a particularly revealing moment, she opened up about how she felt when she learned about Amy Winehouse dying.

“When I got the text about Amy, I was lying down on the bed,  I got up and read the message about her death and just lay back down again. I kept getting up and laying back down for some reason. I’d always wanted to work with Amy, so I just couldn’t believe it really.  And then it hit me—that could have been me. That really could have been me!”

Read more and see the behind-the-scenes video over at EBONY.
