Mindy Kaling’s First Big Role Was Playing Ben Affleck Posted: 01 Nov 2011 11:29 AM PDT Many of us first met Mindy Kaling as Kelly Kapoor on NBC’s The Office, for which she was also writing. That was 2005, as the American remake was unsteadily entering the comedy arena, ready to be judged against its British predecessor. But this wasn’t Mindy’s first experience in adapting other pieces of pop culture. As she tells NPR in an interview about her new book, she got her break by writing and starring in Matt & Ben, a satirical play about how unknowns Ben Affleck and Matt Damon wrote Good Will Hunting and were catapulted to fame. Part of what made the play so funny was the reversals contained in it. For one, the boys don’t actually write what would become an Oscar-winning script; in the play, the manuscript is magically dropped from the ceiling, and the two friends must put aside their rivalry to make it into a movie. For another, Mindy’s co-writer Brenda Withers played Matt Damon even though she’s the taller one, and the shorter Mindy went all-out as an aggressively macho Ben Affleck. Matt & Ben earned the Best Overall Production award at the 2002 Fringe Festival and got a glowing review in the New York Times—mostly for the its decision to throw out zingers about celebrities because its writers were unknowns. (Mindy also played our favorite person Gwyneth Paltrow in one scene.) Ironically, the Times reviewer praised Mindy and Brenda “for undermining their own careers in Hollywood for our benefit.” Instead, the complete opposite happened: The Office creator Greg Daniels hired her based on her performance in the play. And she might have stayed behind the cameras if he hadn’t slipped a clause into her contract. She explained to The A.V. Club, “I was hired as a writer-performer. I didn’t know this, actually, when I signed my contract, because I was a staff writer, but there was a performer clause in the contract.” Though they could have forced her to go on-camera, she seemed happy to bring Kelly to life. So, you can thank Mindy’s (in her words) butch Ben Affleck impression for bringing the “chubby, Paris Hilton-y” Kelly Kapoor into being. Mindy’s book Why Is Everyone Hanging Out Without Me? (And Other Concerns) is out now! Related posts: Post from: Crushable |
First Look: Joseph Gordon-Levitt On The Set Of The Dark Knight Rises Posted: 01 Nov 2011 11:25 AM PDT Hey look, it’s the Gotham Police Department’s handsomest officer! The first stills of Joseph Gordon-Levitt on the set of The Dark Knight Rises were released today, and we see him in character as the special assignment cop John Blake. Hey, Joseph: why so…. ugh…. serious? This photo was taken on location in New York City, where the production has been shooting. Rumors have been circulating that they’d hit Occupy Wall Street, but so far that hasn’t panned out. They have filmed outside Trump Tower, however — using the location as a stand-in for Wayhe Enterprises. The cast and crew will head to Newark, NJ next week to shoot inside City Hall. Gallery: 10 Short Celebrity Marriages More Fascinating Than Kim Kardashian’s Posted: 01 Nov 2011 11:16 AM PDT A lot of people are angry at Kim Kardashian for making a mockery of the institution of marriage for a chance to play princess on television for a day. I would argue that these people are overlooking the true crime committed by Ms. Kardashian: doing it in an ultra-boring way. Over the years, we’ve come to expect crazy short marriages from our celebrities; I would argue that this particular bit of tabloid culture has become an American institution to rival traditional marriage. But we do not want them to be by the books or, even worse, transparently fake. We want them to at least appear to be spontaneous, bizarre, and genuinely pathological. (No, Kim’s pathological need for fame doesn’t count.) Here are ten celebrity couples who did the short marriage thing in a better, crazier, and more entertaining fashion than Kim Kar-snooze-ian and what’s-his-name ever could. Gallery: 25 Photos Of Penn Badgley On His 25th Birthday Posted: 01 Nov 2011 09:37 AM PDT Happy 25th birthday to Penn Badgley and his cheekbones! Guess what I learned today? Penn’s middle name is Dayton. Penn Dayton Badgley — is that not the fanciest damn name you’ve ever heard? Anyway, here are 25 photos of the Gossip Girl star to print out and celebrate with. Video: Stephen Colbert Trolls Two Occupy Wall Street Protesters Posted: 01 Nov 2011 09:14 AM PDT Stephen Colbert takes his conservative persona really seriously—while his liberal counterpart Jon Stewart handily takes down the Occupy Wall Street critics, Colbert plays devil’s advocate with the protesters. He decided to use his PAC’s money to check out the protest firsthand, which included a sit-down interview with occupiers Justin and Ketchup. It is really unclear if these kids are performance artists or honest-to-God real people. With their glasses and “temperature check” hand gestures, they seem like caricatures of hippie kids uselessly protesting. And then when the champagne and steak feast comes in! Hilarious. So are they working with Colbert to make a smart segment, or has he just made Occupy Wall Street look stupid and misdirected? The Colbert Report One thing is for sure: You do not interrupt Stephen Colbert. Related posts: Post from: Crushable |
Chris Brown Pulls An Anthony Weiner On Purpose Posted: 01 Nov 2011 09:05 AM PDT As part of his continuing effort to convince everyone he’s just a nice, normal guy and not a crazy narcissistic asshole, Chris Brown put on a skin-tight alien costume and tweeted a picture of his bulge to his 5 million+ followers last night. You know, totally normal behavior. “I don’t think I can wear this costume tonight! Gonna change!” he oh so coyly captioned it, as if he hadn’t shown his creepy, diagonal tights-bulge to 5 million people already. I think it’s time for a little Internet lesson: Just because it’s online (and not IRL) doesn’t mean different rules apply. I know it’s easy to be an exhibitionist via Twitter, Whosay, and whichever other social media apps you’re using, but if you wouldn’t show up to a party in that thing like, “LOL I shouldn’t be wearing this LOL you can totally see my peen LOL!”, do not do the equivalent thing on social media. The people who see it may not be literally inches from it, but they are still corporeal beings, and they still have the ability to get nauseated IRL. Seriously dude, nobody needed to see that. Netiquette 101. (Via DListed) Related posts: Post from: Crushable |
Heidi Klum And Seal Dressed As An Ape Couple For Their Halloween Party Posted: 01 Nov 2011 08:58 AM PDT Heidi Klum is absolutely the Halloween Queen (is there a T-Rex song called that?). On Saturday, she decked herself out as a gruesome blood-and-muscle baring corpse who was carried out on a gurney. And last night, she and husband Seal dressed as a pair of super-authentic looking apes for Heidi’s annual Halloween party. Apparently Heidi’s costume — which included prosthetic breasts, fake fur and teeth, and makeup — took six hours to get into. However, Heidi admitted to being pretty pleased by that fact that she got out of wearing heels. Here are Ape Heidi and Ape Seal kissing: (via Daily Mail) Post from: Crushable |
Hilary Duff Got To Play Bonnie And Clyde, If Only For Halloween Posted: 01 Nov 2011 08:30 AM PDT Though most celebrities celebrated Halloween over the weekend, there are some who strutted their stuff on the actual day last night. Take Hilary Duff, who dressed up in a cute matching costume with husband Mike Comrie: She tweeted a photo of them as classic bank robbers, complete with bags of money and the caption We’re gunna take you for allllll u got!!! We can’t help but think that this is Hilary’s way of taking back the role of Bonnie in The Story of Bonnie and Clyde, if only for a night. That’s the movie she would be shooting right now if she hadn’t gotten pregnant. The producers weren’t willing to wait the extra months for her to give birth since the project had already wallowed in development hell. True Blood actress Lindsay Pulsipher replaced Hilary as Bonnie Parker. But you’ll remember that Hilary got paid $100,000 even though they were the ones who let her go, so she’s surely not too broken up about it. And she’ll always have Halloween 2011! Comedian Rob Delaney Wants To Sue Kim Kardashian Posted: 01 Nov 2011 08:27 AM PDT The dissolution of Kim Kardashian and Kris Humphries‘ “marriage” is upsetting to me — not because I feel like I’ve been cheated out of the opportunity to watch true love blossom into a brood of beautiful k-named children in HD, but because I feel like their inability to remain married for longer than 72 days represents a fundamental failure on the part of the human spirit. I mean, I’ve had pre-school romances that lasted longer than 72 days, and our crafts room wedding cost only half of what Kim and Kris’ did. Comedian Rob Delaney is so upset at the deceitful pair that he’s threatened to sue them in his weekly Vice column. Here’s an excerpt:
Rob, having Kim marry her own mother is a little over-the-top, but having her marry Bruce Jenner is a perfect ratings stunt! It would be just like a Woody Allen movie that’s really fucking boring. Read the rest of the column here… (via VICE) Post from: Crushable |
