Selena Gomez Is Going To Be A Big Sister And Tabloids Are Going To Be Thrilled Posted: 26 Nov 2011 10:24 AM PST
With Justin Bieber’s baby drama winding down the tabloids need a new headline to decorate their glossy covers. Enter Selena Gomez and her mom’s pregnancy. Selena announced she is going to be a big sis on twitter, tweeting, “Momma and Brian are finally letting me share the news…My mommy’s carrying my baby brother or sister:) I’m the happiest girl in the world!!” Even with this info released to the world I’m guessing if 19-year-old Selena is seen picking out tiny dresses, popping into a maternity shop, or checking out a baby boutique certain magazines might suggest that her sudden interest in infants isn’t because of her mother’s pregnancy but because she’s carrying a tiny Bieber. If Selena wants to keep the baby rumors to a minimum, she better avoid big lunches and big purses. Related posts: Post from: Crushable |

Orphan Week Essay: I Survived Black Friday 2011 Posted: 25 Nov 2011 02:25 PM PST I started writing this post at 2 p.m. EST. Black Friday 2011 began around 10:30 p.m. last night, standing in line at Target for a midnight opening, and I ended the experience unscathed at 7 a.m., then slept til 2. I’ve learned that Black Friday makes you feel like a vampire. I’ve been with my boyfriend Josh for four years — we met freshman year at NYU — and each year at Thanksgiving he’s told me about his mom’s family’s tradition of celebrating Black Friday. He’s retold their war stories, of waiting in cold and sleet at 4 a.m., shoving past shoppers for doorbusters, and the afterglow of breakfast at a local diner, so many times that they’ve taken on a mythical status. After three years of Thanksgiving at my aunt’s house upstate, I worked up the nerve to invite myself along a) to Thanksgiving dinner with both sides of Josh’s family and b) to join the ranks of Black Friday. Usually, the festivities start around 2:30 a.m. in anticipation of stores (Target, Best Buy, JC Penney, American Eagle, Toys R Us) opening at 4. But this year, several of the big boys decided to kick things off at midnight, which means we didn’t get much time to sleep before we grabbed our Dunkin Donuts tea/coffee/hot chocolate and got in line yards behind the people who actually set up tents and chairs hours before us. All in all, Black Friday was astonishingly tame. Target had a plan to let in people 30-40 a time; ten minutes or so after midnight, we were inside. To be fair, we weren’t uber-ambitious in planning our attacks; Target had a great deal to get 42″ TVs at $200, but we knew we wouldn’t be one of those folks. (Although the last TV went to someone while we were in the store, so we were pretty damn close!) From store to store, clothing to electronics, the deals were staggering: Sweaters starting at $30-$50 going for $9.98, Mad Men seasons for $8 and Inception for $3, cookware for $20. All of these finds awaited at Best Buy – I waited half an hour in line to buy a flash drive, which was lame — Bath & Bodyworks for discounted lotions, and JC Penney to take advantage of the clothing deals. To that end, I didn’t see a ton of stuff that for my family, mostly because they have these stores back home and weren’t jonesing for throw pillows at two for three dollars. In our final haul, we didn’t buy anything too dazzling or something that was normally unattainable, but we shopped smartly and brought home plenty of stuff we needed, with money left over to buy gifts for friends and family at New York City’s craft fairs. What really united me with Josh and his family was not the thrill but how we were the only people we knew who were going. In New York, all of my friends winced when I told them about my impending adventure; to my surprise, we got the same disapproving/confused “how could you do that?” reaction in New Hampshire. Everyone regarded it as a crazy, maybe even useless endeavor; they figured their nights were better spent sleeping. What made the night worthwhile for me was sharing the experience with Josh and his mom and aunt. I found a way to bond with these people who I already consider my family, with whom I’d experienced college graduation and death, even more. We cracked jokes in line, especially when I (already a bit sleep-deprived at 11 p.m.) asked, “Will the people behind us try to rush past us?” as we stood feet from those folks. We staggered into a local diner at 6 a.m. and ended up in a laughing fit over some joke involving toast. Was Black Friday tame because we failed to rise to some cool challenge? Not really. A Target employee, in telling us the night’s rules, clearly acknowledged the trampling disasters of the past few years, including an incident at Target’s Buffalo (New York) store in 2010. The days of grown adults battering each other with shopping carts to get to the last HD TV seem to be behind us. People get that there are more important things in life, but if they’re willing to freeze their toes for a few hours, they can come home with some cheap treasures. Although we did have a group who showed up a little after midnight and lingered near the front of Target, making it clear in that “let’s smile apologetically so you’ll let us have our way” way that they wanted to jump the line and get into the store even though the rest of us had waited an hour in the cold. We gave them the bitchface as we proudly marched past and into the safety of the barricades. Amateurs. Related posts: Post from: Crushable |
