Am I Right Ladies? Hell Is Bikini Season

Posted: 19 May 2011 11:30 AM PDT

Well, we did it, girls. We made it through another brutal winter holed up alone in our apartments with our DVR, our cat and a case of Snickers. And unless we all get raptured this weekend, summer is right around the corner. Of course, nice warm weather also means exposed arms, buckets of back sweat, humidity-induced frizz and… bathing suits. Every year we're forced to decide if we want to stuff the meat into a sausage casing or hang it out in the sun to fry. One-piece or bikini? Give me a burqini, amirightladies? It's almost impossible to enjoy the canned strawberry daiquiris I snuck into the pool knowing that I look like something that should be thrown in the rejected pile at a butcher shop. Beached whale? Maybe in my 20s!!

And all the bikini ads don't help. Attention clothing retailers: Seeing sexy, wet women in bikinis striking poses I couldn't dream of being able to do even as a teenager doesn't make me want to buy swimwear from you, it makes me run (okay, powerwalk… okay, walk) for the hills with at least three months' worth of Xanax.

Or, I can confront my demons. I can look at each picture and say "No, demon cloth trying to shame me into thinking you could make me sexy. You can't. And you can't hurt me anymore." I've heard canned strawberry daiquiris help the healing process get started.

‘Fiona’s Tale’ (a.k.a. ‘The Amazing Spider-Man’) Is Filming Near Our Office

Posted: 19 May 2011 11:21 AM PDT

Although the Spider-Man reboot starring Andrew Garfield will differ in many ways from its unsuccessful predecessor, one thing stays the same: Since the story takes place in New York, they’ve got to shoot in the Big Apple. Photos of Garfield lounging around in Queens appeared online last week, and we just spotted the film crew on 19th and Park. That’s just south of Madison Square Park, which was most recently immortalized thanks to Ginnifer Goodwin and John Krasinski‘s Shake Shack lunches in Something Borrowed.

The thing is, the trailers are so small that Garfield, Emma Stone, and the other stars may not be doing any scenes there. Once Will Smith‘s 1,150-square-foot trailer appears on the park, then we’ll know that the big stars are ready to get to work.

Just like with The Hunger Games trying to hide behind the fake shooting name Artemis, we’re not fooled by the name Fiona’s Tale: We know that it’s the working title for The Amazing Spider-Man. What’s odd, though, is that going to fionastale.com takes you to the movie’s homepage, with a pic of the new Spidey and the release date (July 3, 2012). So, Sony must realize that the subterfuge is useless, yet they obviously still register for locations with that name.

The Daily WTF: Crochet Covered Apartment

Posted: 19 May 2011 10:51 AM PDT

A possibly totally insane Polish artist named Olek crocheted an entire apartment for a solo show called "Knitting is for Pus****" at an NYC gallery. Apparently she used her own furniture, so we assume she now sleeps on nothing but yards and yards of comfy yarn.

Girl Crushable: Kristina Horner, Creator of the “What Would Buffy Do?” Music Video

Posted: 19 May 2011 10:16 AM PDT

I just learned about Kristina Horner from her cute tribute video “What Would Buffy Do?”, but the musician is a bonafide YouTube celebrity thanks to her work in the worlds of vlogging and Harry Potter-inspired wizard rock. Like a younger Felicia Day, she champions the geek-girl cause with songs and videos that remind us how inspiring these TV shows and books are. Her latest: An anthem for girls who want to stand up for others, following in the footsteps of Joss Whedon‘s iconic heroine.

The song starts out slow, but a good guitar riff and the chorus elevate it above other, shakier YouTube offerings. Horner and her collaborators obviously know the value of a good production, and seem to have a lot of fun making the video. The story is straightforward: A young girl who is herself bullied learns to find her confidence within, much like in the Buffy series finale when millions of Potential Slayers are awakened.

Like I said, Horner’s been all over YouTube for a while. She got her start vlogging with fiveawesomegirls, a joint YouTube account that she and four other girls who lived in other states used to become closer to one another. They described it as, If you mixed Brotherhood 2.0 with the Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants, and threw in a little Harry Potter and good genes, then you’d have the Five Awesome Girls. Posting has slowed in the past two years, though at least Horner has had plenty on her plate since then.

In addition to founding the band ALL CAPS with Luke Conard, Horner is one half (with Brittany Vahlberg) of the wizard-rock group The Parselmouths. She founded the latter with Vahlberg in 2004 after they realized that all of the Slytherin girls are incredibly one-dimensional. That’s what sets their act apart from other wizard rock bands: They play as original characters from the Harry Potter world. Here’s them performing “Love Song for Professor Lupin” a few years ago:

“What Would Buffy Do?” is available for purchase on iTunes; Horner’s YouTube link is above, and she’s on Twitter @kristinahorner.

Video Gallery: The All-Time Worst ‘Dancing with the Stars’ Performances

Posted: 19 May 2011 10:27 AM PDT

Next week is the season finale of Dancing with the Stars. That means it’s time for freestyle dances, where contestants get to take a break from show-required sambas and waltzes and cut loose with a dance that expresses their personality. But why focus on good dances? Some of Dancing‘s best watercooler moments have been the insane, WTF-filled dances where celebrities try to show off and fail miserably in the process. Moments like these, to be specific.

Marie Osmond

For her freestyle dance, Marie Osmond wanted to pay homage to the fans who kept voting for her to stay on the show. How did she do that? By dressing up as one of the dolls from her bestselling QVC collection and forcing her partner, Jonathan Roberts, to “wind her up.”

Bristol Palin

Pro dancer Mark Ballas has never met a cutesy gimmick he didn’t like. For a dance with Bristol Palin, they took inspiration from the Monkees and dressed up … as gorillas. No, I don’t understand it either.

Video: Check Out a Preview for ‘This Must Be the Place’

Posted: 19 May 2011 09:33 AM PDT

Here’s a scene from upcoming flick This Must Be the Place, aka that thing that’s given us all those incredible images of Sean Penn looking like a Robert Smith impersonator who raided Taylor Momsen‘s closet. In the movie, Sean plays an aging rock star (with Asperger’s?) who sets out to avenge his father’s mistreatment at the hands of Nazis. The best part of this actually looks to be Frances McDormand as, evidently, a firefighter.

Crushable Quotable: Kirk Cameron Thinks Stephen Hawking Has An Unfair Disadvantage

Posted: 19 May 2011 09:20 AM PDT

Teen heartthrob turned hardcore Christian Kirk Cameron is taking aim at physicist Dr. Stephen Hawking, who recently said that there’s no such thing as heaven. Hawking said in a recent interview, “There is no heaven or afterlife for broken-down computers. That is a fairy story for people afraid of the dark.”

Cameron, who runs an online ministry and makes films like Fireproof that stress Christian values, replied on his Facebook page, “To say anything negative about Stephen Hawking is like bullying a blind man. He has an unfair disadvantage, and that gives him a free pass on some of his absurd ideas.” Cameron is referring to Hawking’s motor neuron disease, which has left the Brief History of Time author paralyzed and wheelchair-bound.

Snap This: Amy Poehler’s NY Mag Shoot Is Incredible

Posted: 19 May 2011 09:03 AM PDT

Girlhero Amy Poehler graces the cover of NY Magazine this month, and her accompanying photo spread features several images that parody the horrendous trend of Photoshopping women into unrecognizable blobs of plastic. One of the images (see them all here) has the note “make neck smarter,” for which we have several suggestions:

1. Literary quote tattoo – perhaps Emily Dickinson?
2. Turtleneck
3. Glasses
