Sitcom Work It Insulting To Transgendered People

Posted: 18 Dec 2011 01:00 PM PST

The new sitcome, Work It, has been angering equality activists across the board.

The show, if you haven't seen the above trailer, is about two guys that decide that they have to dress as women to get jobs. They come to the conclusion that women are in more demand than men, so they do it to escape unemployment.

Here's what's being said:

Drian Juarez, project manager for the Transgender Economic Empowerment Program at Los Angeles's Gay and Lesbian Center:

"What is clearly intended to be a humorous promotional ad for the show depicts the two lead characters, dressed as women, standing at a urinal. Sadly, it's very common for people to promote fear of sharing the bathroom with transgender people as a means to further their prejudice. We're frequently portrayed as sexual predators using the bathroom to make sexual advances."

Joe Solmonese, president of the Human Rights Campaign:

"We've seen a lot of offensive things on TV over the years, but this really takes the cake. The so-called 'comedy' of Work It is based on the premise that male-bodied people who unsuccessfully attempt to present themselves as women are worthy of ridicule. The problem is that most transgender women find themselves in this situation, at least temporarily, during their transition process. And due to the prohibitively high costs of transition-related medical care and widespread insurance inequities, many may be visibly transgender for their entire lives.

"By emphasizing the artificiality of the lead characters' femininity through depictions of them putting on makeup and feminine clothing, for example, Work It makes similar implications about the nature of transgender women's identities and their ways of expressing them, reinforcing the erroneous popular notion that transgender women are not 'real' women. By encouraging the audience to laugh at the characters' failed attempts at womanhood, the show condones similar treatment of visibly transgender women. Unfortunately, such prejudiced behavior needs no encouragement; 53% of self-identified transgender people reported having been the victim of verbal harassment or abuse in a public place. ABC should not air this show — plain and simple. At the very least, Work It is offensive and insulting. At worst, the show is downright dangerous and sends a message that transgender people are meant to be laughed at, or are somehow less-than. This show would be a tremendous setback for transgender Americans, and everyone who believes that all people deserve to be treated with respect and dignity."

Masen Davis, executive director of Transgender Law Center:

"Transgender people and anyone who doesn't fit narrow gender stereotypes experience high rates of discrimination and bias in the workplace. The humor shouldn't have to depend on negative portrayals of who folks who are already having a hard time on the job."

Wow! Lots of people are really upset!

We agree that it's offensive for it's disregard for transgendered feelings, but also for the fact that it just looks plain stupid. There is not one joke that lands.

Do U think it's offensive??

DMX And Wife Are Doing VH1's Couples Therapy

Posted: 18 Dec 2011 12:40 PM PST

DMX has gotten clean, has been so happy to be away from coke, but unfortunately has been separated from his wife of 12 years for about a year now.

They have four kids together.

Luckily, even if it IS on reality television, they're going to give it a shot and work on their issues -- on VH1's Couples Therapy!

They just started filming, so we might not see anything from it for a little while yet.

We think this is a good idea, especially if it ends up helping!

Think this is something U'd like to watch??

Lindsay's Playboy Isn't Doing So Well

Posted: 18 Dec 2011 12:00 PM PST

So, according to retailers, Lindsay Lohan's playboy spread isn't spreading so well. Nobody is rushing out to get their copy.

The response to the question of whether or not anyone has purchased it among the retailers has been a not-so-shocking "not really."

We mean, she's done the Marilyn thing before, and there was nothing new about them. This source says it best:

"I'm not surprised at all. Despite Playboy's hype, there was nothing particularly shocking or new about this shoot. While these shots may have been slightly closer to full frontal than Lindsay's previous shots, they weren't actually full frontal; there was also nothing particularly new about Lindsay dressing up as Marilyn Monroe. I thought the shots were really boring and didn't really live up to the promises Playboy had made. If they'd actually gotten full frontal shots of Lindsay, or come up with a fresher, more interesting concept, there might have been more demand for the photos."

Yeah! We agree with this. They could have knocked it out of the park with something interesting and new... but they paid her a million bucks for more of the same!

Have U seen it or bought it?? Thoughts??

ScarJo Doesn't Like To Be Called ScarJo

Posted: 18 Dec 2011 11:20 AM PST

So, Scarlett Johansson doesn't like to be called ScarJo, which is a shame, because it's so much easier to write ScarJo instead of her full name (which is 17 letters long).

Here's what she said about it:

"Oh, it's awful. It's a laziness ... People can't actually say the whole name? It's just bizarre ... so Cate Blanchett is not, like, 'CaBla'? Why is that? Why do I have to get stuck with [ScarJo]?"

You should feel lucky to get a super awesome abbreviated name! It's an honor!

And CaBla doesn't sound right, obviously.

Do U think people should skip the abbreviation??

The Norwegian Butter Crisis Is Serious Business

Posted: 18 Dec 2011 10:00 AM PST

LOLz!

Check out this video above from a Norwegian blogger who is getting all kinds of upset for people making fun of the fact that Norway is currently in what people are calling a "butter crisis."

Yes, it sucks, and people anywhere would be pissed off about it. Though, we're not sure if they'd be so inclined to threaten to break into our houses and force us to watch them eat our butter in front of us, but hey, to each their own.

The thing is is this: the butter crisis is kind of ridiculous!

Norway is pretty small (think Colorado), but they're one of the richest countries (per capita) around. Mix that with two things: 1. they try to make everything for themselves (which is kind of inspired, yet...), but refuse to import any butter when a rough summer's weather severely lessens their dairy production -- 2. because "the Norwegian dairy cooperative Tine has a de facto monopoly on the domestic market and is deliberately sheltered from foreign competition as a matter of public policy."

So the Government is already on top of it, relaxing the high tariffs and allowing for a flow of imported butter. So relax! It might be a little while, but there's no emergency here! It's just an annoying problem for the time being!
