My Top Albums Of 2010

It is that time of the year when I compile my list of favorite albums of the year … and what a diverse year of music it was. To be honest, I really wasn’t wowed by the music of 2010 until pretty late in the year. Some albums snuck up on me as one of the year’s faves, others surprised me entirely … and, of course, some were surefire loves as soon as they were released. Here is my list of the 10 Best Albums of 2010.

Number 10 — Amanda Palmer, Amanda Palmer Performs the Popular Hits of Radiohead on her Magical Ukulele:


Altho this is technically an EP of coversongs, Amanda Palmer (of The Dresden Dolls and her new side project Evelyn Evelyn) truly makes these Radiohead songs her own. I don’t know many rock stars who can use a ukulele as expertly as Amanda can but she seems to have the gift. You don’t get to hear much whimsy and frivolity in rock music these days, which is why Amanda‘s Radiohead EP is such a breath of fresh air. I was lucky enough to see Amanda Palmer perform live at South by Southwest a couple of years ago and I was completely blown away by her talent. This Radiohead EP (available exclusively from her official website HERE) was one of the most fun releases of 2010. I highly recommend you check it out … even if you’re not a big Radiohead fan, I think Amanda Palmer will charm the Hell out of you with this disc.

 

Joe Manganiello Does ‘Cosmopolitan’ Magazine

True Blood star Joe Manganiello is featured in the current issue of Cosmopolitan magazine in a pull-out poster that is meant to be tacked up onto your wall for admiring thruout the cold Winter months. Any shirtless sight of Mr. Manganiello is worth a look-see, wouldn’t you agree?


Le sigh. The man does make a fine specimen of werewolfiness, don’t he? Altho we have many months ahead of waiting to do before the new season of True Blood is upon us, at least we get little treats like this from Cosmo to help us pass the time. Enjoy!!

Christina Aguilera Releases A New Batch Of Promo Photos

A new batch of previously unseen promo photos of popstar-turned-actress Christina Aguilera have made their way to the Internets and they are … interesting … to say the least. The photos were shot by Andrew Macpherson and feature a relatively fresh-faced Xtina. The pics are worth checking out, especially since Xtina is not wearing her garish trademark red lipstick.


Thank the sweet baby Jebus that Macpherson got Xtina to pose without all the red lipstick. I think she looks a million times better when her make-up is light. To be honest, some of these photos are cheesy as Hell … but they’re not bad. Macpherson photographed some of the promo photos for Burlesque (including the official movie poster) as well as shoots for Natalie Portman, P!nk, Britney Spears and others. These photos are fun … playful … and much better than many of Xtina‘s other promo photos. What do y’all think … do you like?

Reese Witherspoon & Jim Toth Are Gettin’ Hitched

More good news to pass along today … at least, I think. US Weekly is reporting that Reese Witherspoon and her boyfriend Jim Toth have gotten themselves engaged to be wed! As you may know, Reese and Jim have been dating for about a year since Reese broke up with Jake Gyllenhaal last year. I guess a year was all it took … ‘cuz apparently the couple are ready to say I Do!

Reese Witherspoon is ready to walk down the aisle again! She and Hollywood agent Jim Toth are engaged, her rep confirms exclusively to UsMagazine.com. “They are extremely happy,” the rep tells Us. The Oscar-winning actress, 34, began dating Toth, 40, around January 2010, shortly after her split from Jake Gyllenhaal. The duo went public with their romance in March during a romantic birthday weekend in Ojai, Calif. Toth works as an agent at L.A.’s Creative Artists Agency; Witherspoon is a CAA client, but Toth doesn’t represent her … Witherspoon joked about engagement talk to Entertainment Weekly recently. “My mom always texts me, like, ‘Are you getting married?’” Witherspoon said, laughing. “I’m like, ‘Mom, come on! You would know if I was getting married.’” A pal says of Witherspoon’s romance with Toth: “She is definitely happy, in love and definitely wants to settle down.”

While all of this sounds like good news … let’s be clear here … Reese‘s rep never actually used the word “engaged”. US Weekly seems pretty confident that their engagement report is true so I suppose we can give them the benefit of the doubt … but “they are extremely happy” does not equal necessarily “they are engaged to be married”. While I would LOVE to see Reese happily settled into marriage again if that is what she really wants, I can’t help but think that this engagement seems awfully rushed. Still … if true, I wish them all the happiness in the world on a long and very happy marriage. What do y’all think … is it too soon for Reese and Jim to get married? Do you believe that they are engaged at all?

Leighton Meester Does ‘Seventeen’ Magazine

Gossip Girl star Leighton Meester, who can be seen in the new film Country Strong next month, is featured on the cover and in the pages of the new issue of Seventeen magazine. In her coverstory interview, Leighton waxes poetic on life, love and music. For the most part, the accompanying photospread is … nice … but the coverphoto, I’m afraid to say, is absolutely horrendous.


I’m blind. The mere sight of this coverphoto has left me blind … and hating my eyes for having seen the photo in the first place. I have no idea what in HELL made the editors at Seventeen think that the outfit chosen for this coverphoto was a good idea but … no … just no. As I said, the rest of the photos in the spread are … nice … and better … but not by very much:


UGH! Am I crazy or are these printed outfits just … ugly … and way too bizzy. I can’t say I’m really crazy about the hair styling either … I never noticed how large Leighton‘s forehead is … but there it is … large and in charge. Without question, Leighton Meester is a beautiful young woman … it’s just a shame that this Seventeen magazine photospread doesn’t really highlight that fact very well :/

Newly Single Rihanna Hits The High Seas In Barbados

Earlier today we learned that Rihanna and her LA Dodgers boyfriend Matt Kemp have called it quits after almost a year together. Right now we get to see a few photos of the newly single Rihanna having herself a grand time as she water-skis off the coast of her homeland in Barbados. Rihanna may not need a man but she sure looks happily attached to this jet-ski:


HMMM … something tells me that Rihanna is not crying any tears over the end of her relationship with Matt Kemp. As I mentioned before, my guess is that the couple — while happy for a while — weren’t really all that serious and only kept things going for as long as it was fun. Not every relationship has to be a life-long commitment … and more times than not, these sorts of relationships just naturally run their course. For now, Rihanna is single … and is prolly loving it! Jet-ski your troubles away, Ri Ri.

Movie Review: ‘All Good Things’

Last night was another quiet movie night for David and me, which to be honest, was the perfect way to spend an uneventful Monday night. A few weeks ago, we got to see some photos of Ryan Gosling in the just-released film All Good Things and based on those photos (of Ryan in a pair of wet and soggy tighty whitey undies) I was complete sold on seeing the movie. Last night, David and I did watch All Good Things and I am happy to report that we loved it.


It’s easy for people to overlook the fact that Gosling stars in All Good Things because all of the focus is on his other film Blue Valentine, which opens in theaters on Friday. To be honest, the only reason I even heard about All Good Things was because of those photos we saw of Ryan in the film earlier this month. But all that aside, the film is really worth seeing … even if you don’t want to get out of the house to see it. David and I watched the film on On Demand at home and really enjoyed it. The film is based on the true story of the disappearance/alleged murder of a Real Estate tycoon’s wife in the early 80′s. The role that Gosling plays is prolly the darkest role I’ve ever seen him take on … and he played the character so well that I started to dislike him very much (and based on THIS interview with the LA Times, Gosling didn’t like playing the dark character at all). I was also very taken with Kirsten Dunst‘s performance … I mean, it wasn’t anything that will get her nominated for any awards but she holds her own very well opposite Gosling and the fantastic Frank Langella. All Good Things is a very dark, disturbing film … and it does not end the way you think it will. A date movie it is not … but it’s deffo worth checking out based on its very compelling story.

Before we settled in for our movie, David and I enjoyed a delish dinner at Dominick’s. The place was dead which meant we had it all to ourselves. The food was great, the drink was excellent and the company was perfect. It may be a very quiet week here in LA after the holidays but David and I are deffo making the most of it :D

Chris Hemsworth & Elsa Pataky Got Hitched!

Congratulations are in order for Thor star Chris Hemsworth and his ladylove Elsa Pataky because People magazine is reporting that the couple got themselves married over the Xmas holiday weekend!

Thor star Chris Hemsworth and his longtime girlfriend, Spanish actress Elsa Pataky, are now husband and wife, PEOPLE has learned. Hemsworth, 27, who portrays the Marvel Comics character in the upcoming films, Thor (costarring Natalie Portman) and The Avengers, grew up in Australia. He and Pataky, 34 – best known stateside for her role alongside Samuel L. Jackson in the 2006 film Snakes on a Plane – were married over the holiday. Hemsworth’s rep confirms the marriage but no further details are available.

You may recall that Elsa Pataky, the new Mrs. Hemsworth, is featured in the new Time Force watch ad campaign with soccer star Cristiano Ronaldo. I would assume that the couple were married either in Spain (her homeland) or in Australia (his homeland) but thus far we don’t know anything for sure about their nuptials. Even still, let’s send our best wishes and congratulations to newly wedded couple.

‘Spider-Man: Turn Off The Dark’ Loses A Lead Actress

More bad news for the troubled Broadway musical Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark … according to a new report from the New York Times, the show is about to lose one of its lead actresses. Natalie Mendoza was injured during a performance of Turn Off the Dark a few weeks ago and suffered a concussion as a result. Apparently, the latest accident which involved Christopher Tierney was the final straw for the actress … she is now ready to cut her losses and get the HELL out while she still can.

One of the lead actresses in Broadway's "Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark," Natalie Mendoza, who suffered a concussion during the musical's first preview performance last month, is leaving the production, according to two people who work on the show and who spoke on condition of anonymity. Ms. Mendoza's representatives and the producers of "Spider-Man" have been hammering out an exit agreement for days now, and an official statement is expected as early as Tuesday, the two people said. They spoke on condition of anonymity because the producers have forbidden public comments given that lawyers and others are still fine-tuning the language to explain Ms. Mendoza's departure, an artistic loss and embarrassing blow to the production. Ms. Mendoza's spokesman, Shea Martin, on Monday declined a request to interview the actress, and also declined to comment on her departure. Ms. Mendoza did not reply to messages sent to her on Monday morning. Her last performance was on Monday, Dec. 20; the production has said that she has been on vocal rest since then, under doctors' orders. But she was also shaken by a bad accident that occurred mid-performance on Dec. 20 involving her castmate and friend, Christopher Tierney, according to a fellow actor in the musical.

Mendoza was cast as the original Spider-Man villain Arachne and is an integral character for Act II of the show. As I understand it, director Julie Taymor worked closely with Mendoza to bring this character to life. Turn Off the Dark was Mendoza‘s Broadway debut … but many of y’all may recognize her from the amazing horror film The Descent. Altho there has been no official confirmation of Mendoza‘s leaving the show, I suspect we’ll be hearing something official very soon.

Alas … another set-back for the flailing $65 million dollar behemoth of a show. While most certainly a replacement will be found and put into place for Mendoza‘s character, this is NOT good news for the show. It’s not yet clear if Mendoza‘s exit will inspire other players in the show to quit but … well … I wouldn’t at all be surprised if players started pulling out of the show in the very near future. Ugh. How much more bad stuff can happen before this show is forced to close for good?

Willow Smith Talks To Yahoo! About Music, Acting & Jay-Z

The rambunctiously adorable Willow Smith took a break from Whipping Her Hair to give a spirited interview to Yahoo! Music about a wide range of topics. Willow revealed in this interview that it is in the realm of possibility that she may record a remake version of the 80′s rap song Parents Just Don’t Understand, made famous by her father Will Smith … oh, and if you feel like jumping over a log, Willow advises that you jump over that log.


Willow also discusses the advice she has gotten from her famous parents, what it is like to work with Jay-Z, the possibility of collaborating with other members of her family … but she does NOT reveal anything at all about the other songs she has recorded for her debut album. I guess we’ll just have to wait a bit longer to hear what else is in store from Willow Smith. In the meantime, check out her video interview in full below to hear from the little darling herself:


Ain’t she just a cute little bundle of energy? I fully expect big things from Willow Smith … I can just tell that 2011 is going to be a big year for her.

Rihanna & Matt Kemp Are Dunzo!

As the last days of 2010 slowly die I have a bit of sad news to pass along … Rihanna and LA Dodgers baseball player Matt Kemp have reportedly decided to end their relationship. US Weekly is reporting that “sources close to the couple” have confirmed to them that Ratt Hemp are no longer romantically affiliated. They are dunzo, y’all!

Time for Rihanna to pen a new break-up ballad: After almost a year together, she and Matt Kemp have called it quits, an insider close to the singer tells UsMagazine.com. “It happened over the last few weeks,” explains the source. “She basically was just over it.” A rep for Rihanna (she’s currently vacationing with family in her native Barbados) could not be reached for comment. Los Angeles Dodgers outfielder Kemp, 26, helped Rihanna, 22, move on from Chris Brown, who infamously assaulted her in February 2009. The duo were first spotted frolicking together in Cabo San Lucas last January, and slowly opened up about their romance in the spring. But the “Only Girl” singer has been “so busy,” the insider says. “He just can’t keep up with her crazy travel schedule.” “Matt’s sick of always following after her like a puppy dog all over the world. He wants something more normal,” the source adds. Plus, the insider says, “It was never as serious as it looked. It was always just [about] having fun.”

Altho sad, this news is unsurprising. I, personally, never thought the couple looked all that serious. They seemed to enjoy spending time together and I’m sure they had a lot of fun while the gettin’ was good … but as soon as Rihanna got back to her bizzy schedule to promote her new album Loud (which was released in the Fall), I suspected her days with Matt were numbered. My guess is that Ri Ri and Matt will stay friendly and who knows, mebbe they’ll reconnect once Rihanna is between albums again. For now, tho, it really does sound like they’re no longer attached. Ah well … c’est la vie.

Sarah Jessica Parker & Fam Enjoy A Fun Snow Day

While many New Yorkers are suffering under the weight of all the snow that has been dumped on them in the past few days, others have found ways to turn the Snowpocalypse into something fun. Sarah Jessica Parker, her hubby Matthew Broderick and their eldest son James Wilkie got out of the house yesterday and dived headlong into the snow … and had themselves a grand ol’ time.


When life hands you lemons, you turn them into lemonade … or in this case, when life dumps mounds and mounds of snow on you, you turn it into a fun snow day! It appears that all this snow was a bit too much for the Parker-Broderick twins to be playing in but it sure looks like James Wilkie had himself a blast. Kelsey Grammer’s Divorce Will Cost Him At Least $50 Million

Yesterday we learned that actor Kelsey Grammer is workin’ overtime to get a quickie divorce from his wife Camille Grammer so that he can marry his new 29 year old fiancée Kayte Walsh as soon as possible. Well, it turns out that it is going to cost Kelsey BIG TIME to get ride of Camille as his wife. The couple were married 13 years ago without a pre-nuptial agreement … so all the money that he made in that time will have to be split 50/50 with Camille … to a tune in excess of $50 million bucks!

Kelsey and Camille Grammer will divide up a 9-figure pot of gold, and Camille will walk away with more than $50 million … sources connected with the divorce tell TMZ … the couple never signed a prenup, which means all earnings during the marriage are divided 50/50. We’re told during their 13 years of marriage, the couple amassed a fortune in excess of $100,000,000. Much of it was invested in real estate. They have homes in the Holmby Hills area of L.A., Malibu, Hawaii, the Hamptons, New York City and Colorado. Our sources say when they married Kelsey was strapped for cash, but turns out Camille is savvy in the business department and taught Kelsey a thing or two along the way. One person familiar with their finances says, “They made a lot of smart decisions. They were really a good team.” Sources say the couple is working out a financial settlement, made complicated by the fact that some of the properties — like Hawaii — are in the toilet because of the economy. We’re told no real “Cheers” money is coming in, but “Fraiser” is still a cash register and Camille gets a cut.

Lord Have Mercy! That is a lot of money to divide up … but it’s really not very surprising that Camille will get at least half. Even with a pre-nup in place, she had a good case for getting a lot of money … particularly because of Kelsey‘s extra-marital affair. But, with no pre-nup in place, well, there’s no reason why the current Mrs. Grammer won’t walk away with her mega-millions. Considering how anxious Kelsey is to get ride of Camille so he can marry Kayte, I’m guessing he’ll be very amenable to signing off on the fortune split just to get the whole matter over and done with. I hope Kelsey is really, REALLY happy with Kayte Walsh … it’s gonna cost him a LOT just to be with her.

Is The World Ready For A Movie About Lindsay Lohan’s Life?

Producers have revealed plans to make a new film titled Dogs in Pocketbooks that will tell the tale of a “spoiled brat prone to alcohol and cocaine binges, reckless driving, failed rehab attempts, career-ending partying and ruthless hangers-on” … sound like anyone you know? Furthermore, heiress Lydia Hearst has been attached to the project and it has been noted that Hearst bears a striking resemblance to one Lindsay Lohan. That’s right, this new film will allegedly tell the life story of Lindsay Lohan … and her mother Dina Lohan is suing mad!

British model and heiress Lydia Hearst Shaw has just landed her first Hollywood acting role, playing a character based on Lindsay Lohan in a film that closely mirrors the troubled starlet’s life. Screenwriter Charles Castillo said: ‘Lydia will play a bratty movie goddess in and out of rehab, in trouble with the law, and hounded by greedy agents, predatory paparazzi, stalkers and crazed media – a role obviously based on Lindsay.’ Joan Collins will also star in the film called Dogs In Pocketbooks, as a high-powered Hollywood agent who struggles to find work for Hearst Shaw’s character as she struggles with addiction, rehab, court appearances and the media, just like Lohan. Lohan is currently undergoing court ordered rehab at the Betty Ford Centre in Palm Springs following a jail stint after violating her probation in relation to a 2007 driving under influence charge. Castillo said he spent a lot of time looking for the right actress to play the ‘Lohan’ character before finally settling on 26-year-old Hearst Shaw. ‘She’s one of the few supermodels who can actually act,’ he said. ‘She’s smart, well read, charming and very beautiful. We looked at a lot of actresses for this role, and I was really knocked out’ … Castillo said the film is not intended to be mean-spirited to Lohan who has seen her Hollywood career come to a shuddering halt. The actress was replaced in a biopic of 1970s porn star Linda Lovelace and has not appeared in a major film for almost three years. Castillo said of the film: ‘It’s the kind of thing she has spoofed about herself in the past.’ Collins, 77, told the New York Post she is looking forward to filming in Los Angeles and New York in February. ‘The script is a hoot – a satire on the crazed hysteria surrounding showbiz celebrities. I’m playing an aggressive, sexy, powerful woman. For a change.’

While I agree that Lindsay‘s trainwrecky life seems the perfect fodder for a Hollywood film, why bother? We get to see Lohan‘s messy troubles play out on a daily basis in real life. Despite the fact that we all seem to really want to know what is going on in Lindsay‘s life, it seems hardly necessary to make a movie about it. That being said, if this Dogs in Pocketbooks film actually does get made and released, I might have to check it out just for hilarity’s sake. BUT, if Dina Lohan has her way … the film will never see the light of day. Dina is mulling over the decision to file a lawsuit to block this film from getting made:

Dina Lohan says the new movie “is definitely based on Lindsay’s likeness,” and “We have a very strong case. It’s shadowing E*TRADE” — referring to Lohan’s suit against the online brokerage firm which produced a commercial featuring a baby Lindsay. Now we’ve learned Lohan’s family lawyer, Stephanie Ovadia, has been contacted by the Lohan family and it seems Ovadia thinks they have a case: “They are again using her likeness without her being compensated.” Ovadia adds, “Not only that but they are advertising the fact that they are using her likeness.” Dina warns, “Anyone bringing negativity will be dealt with accordingly.”

LOL! The Lohans are the most ridiculous people alive. They seem to LOVE all the attention that their fame garners them and never seem to shy away from media attention but they HATE it when anyone dares to encroach on their infamy. Will this Lindsay Lohan movie get made? Will Dina Lohan‘s lawsuit have teeth? Will anyone stop the insanity? Stay tuned …

Oh and just a quick real update on Lindsay Lohan … she will be leaving the Betty Ford Center rehab facility for good on week from today on January 4. You have been warned.

Elton John & David Furnish Welcome The Birth Of A Baby Son

Congratulations are in order for Sir Elton John and his civil partner hubby David Furnish because they are the proud parents of a newborn baby boy born via surrogate on Xmas Day. As you may recall, we learned yesterday that Alanis Morissette and her hubby Mario Souleye Treadway welcomed the birth of their son, Ever Imre, on Xmas Day … so Elton and David are in very good new parent company.

Sir Elton John and David Furnish have become parents to son Zachary Jackson Levon Furnish-John, the couple tells UsMagazine.com exclusively. The baby boy, who was born Dec. 25 in California via a surrogate, weighed 7 pounds, 15 ounces. “We are overwhelmed with happiness and joy at this very special moment,” John and Furnish tell Us in a joint statement. “Zachary is healthy and doing really well, and we are very proud and happy parents.” This is the first child for John, 62, and Furnish, 48. The couple married in 2005 after 12 years together. A rep for the couple has stated that they intend to protect and respect the privacy of their surrogate, and will not be discussing any details relating to the surrogacy arrangements.

Wow … this news came out of nowhere. If I recall correctly, there was some talk a bit ago of Elton and David mebbe adopting a baby … but I really dismissed all that talk as idle chatter. I guess the idea of fatherhood really stuck with them both so they decided to move forward with a baby of their own. As you may recall, Neil Patrick Harris and his partner David Burtka welcomed the birth of their twin babies earlier this year and their children were born via surrogate mother. All these new babies in 2010 kinda makes the year seem a bit more special, don’tcha think? Let’s send our heartiest congrats and best wishes to the expanding Furnish-John family :D
