Textual Healing: Do You Lie More In Texts? Posted: 13 Sep 2011 11:40 AM PDT Text messaging is often the fastest way to communicate with friends and acquaintances, but it's not always the best one. Especially when it comes to texting with guys. Here at Crushable we aim to help you sift through all the subtext and emerge relatively unscathed – with a little help from our friend Amanda Ernst. If someone asked you to track every conversation you had — via email, phone, text and in person — and keep a tally of how many lies you told in each conversation, what do you think the results would be? Through which medium would you lie the most? Well, don’t think too hard about it, because researchers at Cornell University have already tested this, and have some pretty interesting (albeit not surprising) conclusions. The researchers discovered that more than 10% of texts were lies, although 30% of those were “butler lies,” a new term coined by Cornell researchers to describe those white lie texts we all use from time to time to end conversations. For example, “It’s been nice chatting but I’m going to sleep now.” And although I thought their research would conclude that people lie more in text and email and other written mediums where you don’t have to literally lie to someone’s face, one scientist told the New York Times that he believed people actually lied more in person and on the phone — where there is no written record of their lies to entrap them. Of course, Chiara Atik, who I have had much back-and-forth in the debate over texting vs. calling in the past, uses this data to solidify the conclusion that texting is better than calling. But I still feel the opposite. Yes, it might be more common to lie on the phone to someone — it’s amazing how easily those little white lies that get you out of trouble slip off the tongue — but isn’t it also easily to detect a lie in a phone conversation than a text or email? You get so much more information from a call: tone of voice, energy level, background noise. My whole theory about why I prefer calling to texts (sometimes) is because I find it hard to say no on the phone or in person. “It's easy to cancel, dodge or back out of plans when you're texting but…it's not as easy to say no on the phone,” I wrote a few months ago. “And phone calls have an additional bonus: when you're listening the tone of someone's voice and enjoying some fun banter, you don't want to say no. You want the conversation to continue.” That means: fewer “butler lies” and more genuine conversation. You might even get to know the person on the other end a little better, without intrusion from emoticons and LOLs. If you’re on the phone with someone who you don’t want to see, you have to man up and tell them. Yes, that’s not easy, but at least it’s over and done with. I guess I prefer my communication quick and dirty. Ultimately, I think what this study showed me is that it’s important to remain skeptical, whether you’re chatting to someone online or on the phone. But if you feel yourself getting paranoid and wondering every time you speak to someone whether they’re telling you the truth, it doesn’t matter what kind of relationship you have: you need to end it. What do you think about lying? Do you do it more in texts or on the phone? Have you ever been caught in a lie you told someone in a text? Leave your experiences in the comments below and you might see them featured in an upcoming installment of Textual Healing. Related posts: Post from: Crushable |
Gallery: Celebrities Scowling In The Front Row At Fashion Week Posted: 13 Sep 2011 11:16 AM PDT Ah Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week, that wonderful time when everyone in New York City fights to get into all the shows and then acts like it’s a horrible burden to have to sit through them. Are you even allowed to smile if you’ve got a front row seat at a show? Celebrities like Kim Kardashian, Jennifer Love Hewitt and Terry Richardson say otherwise. Posted: 13 Sep 2011 10:00 AM PDT How do you know Abigail Breslin‘s grown up? She joins an indie teen sex comedy called A Virgin Mary. Now, she’s never been squeaky-clean — consider her “Superfreak” dance in Little Miss Sunshine – but the plot still comes as a shock: Abigail’s character promises her best guy friend that if neither of them has lost their virginity by 18, they’ll sleep with each other. Joining Abigail in A Virgin Mary are Carter Jenkins as the lucky guy (Valentine’s Day), Keke Palmer (last seen on Degrassi) as her best friend, and Daryl Sabara (from the Spy Kids movies). Turns out this is something of a pattern: Many other young Hollywood actresses made the transition to more adult movies with a single role, shocking either because of their age or their previous “good-girl” look. Questionable Choices: Danny Glover Wore Those Toe Shoe Things On The Red Carpet Posted: 13 Sep 2011 10:03 AM PDT You guys, I’m pretty sure that people who wear those feet-toe shoes (that’s the official name) are just trying to brag about having all ten toes. Why else would a person put something so aesthetically offensive on their body? Sure, they’re supposed so be super comfortable and good for your back and all that, but come on! These things are the product of an unholy union between Crocs and those rainbow toe-socks that one girl in high school wore — you know, the one who was president of that avant-garde theater club and secretly made money webcamming naked with mustachioed 40-year-olds in Portland, Oregon. So I’m going to assume that Danny Glover, who wore a pair of neutral feet-toe shoes to a film festival last week, just happens to be particularly proud that all his limbs are fully intact. Or maybe he’s just into puns? “The fit like a glover!” Ha ha, sigh. Now excuse me while I nurse my aching back, which is a product of me being too proud to every put on a pair of feet-toe shoes. Video: The Winklevoss Twins Shill For Pistachios Posted: 13 Sep 2011 09:48 AM PDT I hope you guys are having a good day and I’m sorry about the very sad thing I’m about to tell you: my boyfriend is allergic to nuts, all nuts, and he has never tasted a pistachio. Never once tasted a pistachio – can you believe it? For the rest of us — those lucky pistachio-able beings — we hardly need to be convinced to put the delicious green nuts into our mouthholes. Although Tyler and Cameron Winklevoss are doing their best to ensure we don’t forget about pistachios. And they make fun of Mark Zuckerberg in the process. Oh man, hopefully Zuck isn’t allergic to nuts — if you are, buddy, you should probably watch your back, because I bet those Winklevi have a lifetime supply. Post from: Crushable |
5 Facts About the 2011 Miss Universe, Miss Angola Leila Lopes Posted: 13 Sep 2011 08:40 AM PDT Last night in São Paulo, Brazil, Andy Cohen presided over the Miss Universe pageant, where a judging panel whose members ranged from actress Vivica A. Fox to journalist Connie Chung declared Leila Lopes (Miss Angola) the winner. Leila (full name Leila Luliana da Costa Vieira Lopes) beat out 88 other contestants for the crown. Here’s your rundown on the 25-year-old business student-turned-pageant queen. 1. She’s half Brazilian and bilingual. Turns out São Paulo was the perfect setting for Leila’s victory. Because Angola is a former Portuguese colony, many citizens are well-versed in the language. She whipped out her Portuguese more than once during the pageant, which really impressed the judges. 2. She’s the first Angolan woman to win the title. The statistics don’t stop there: She’s the fourth African woman to win, the second black African woman, and the fourth black woman in the world to win Miss Universe. 3. She’s an ex-pat. Though born in Angola, Leila currently lives and studies in England. She was crowned Miss Angola UK in 2008, but almost didn’t get to keep the title because at the time she wasn’t a UK resident. 4. She’s happy with herself. The final question was which physical traits the contestants would change about themselves, but Leila said she’d rather stay the way she is:
5. She doesn’t discriminate in who she wants to help. Leila told the judges that she would continue raising awareness about HIV, as well as providing for underprivileged children and the elderly. Lucky that she won! Related posts: Post from: Crushable |
Model Kylie Jenner Makes Her Runway Debut In Avril Lavigne’s Fashion Show Posted: 13 Sep 2011 08:28 AM PDT It’s been quite a week for celebrity siblings in the modeling industry: the famous sis of the day isn’t Ali Lohan, by 14-year-old Kylie Jenner, youngest member of the Jenner/Kardashian clan. Kylie made her runway debut yesterday, modeling in the show for Avril Lavigne‘s line, Abbey Dawn (we’re still waiting to see men’s ties make that third comeback). If 17 is too young for Ali Lohan to pose for photos in her underwear, is 14 too young to walk the runway? It’s something that’s been contended a lot recently: early this year, designer Diane Von Furstenberg came under fire when she accidentally hired a 15-year-old model after strongly advocating that the industry stop using girls under the age of 16. The situation is clearly different when the model in question is a celebrity and not an anonymous foreigner alone in the big city — no doubt, Kylie was treated differently than most young models. However, hiring a 14-year-old to strut around in high heels and fishnets sets a pretty terrible precedent for the industry. Knock it off, celebrity teenagers! Just go off and be teenagers for a while. (photos via Getty) Related posts: Post from: Crushable |
Entertainment Tonight Releases Photos of Taylor Armstrong’s Black Eye Posted: 13 Sep 2011 07:20 AM PDT Entertainment Tonight has obtained the photos of Taylor Armstrong‘s black eye, one of the many she took to document husband Russell Armstrong‘s abuse. It’s pretty nasty; the photos show Taylor right after she received the bruise, and a little while later as she got reconstructive surgery. A few days ago, Radar Online reported that Taylor’s signed a deal to write a memoir on domestic abuse, which was to include photos of her injuries — it appears that ET has (really, really, no pun intended) beaten her to the punch. The one laughable part is when the ET commentator asks, “And are these new clues to Russell’s suicide?” Um, yes. About two weeks before Russell’s death, Taylor announced to the world that he had been abusing her. It’s very likely that that shame, coupled with his financial problems, were what drove him to suicide. What’s curious is how much the other Housewives knew about Taylor’s abuse. Various news reports are saying that Taylor would show them her bruises, but that hasn’t been confirmed by any credible sources. What we’ve seen on season 2 so far is her and Russell going into therapy; we’ll be keeping an eye out in future episodes for any sign that she might have confided in the ladies about something else.
