The Daily WTF: Prince William Greets The Crazies

Posted: 08 Dec 2010 10:51 AM PST

Prince William and Harry did their royal duty yesterday and paid visit to the high court of insane looking people for ICAP’s Annual Charity Day. For some reason, this charity day involves corporate employees dressing like extras from Pippin, but at least their odd costumes detract from the real sideshow that is William’s melting face.

World's Worst Human Contender: Rielle Hunter

Posted: 08 Dec 2010 10:19 AM PST

Yesterday, Elizabeth Edwards passed away after a six year battle with cancer.

And the world was collectively sad, or at least paying their respects. Except for Rielle Hunter, John Edwards‘ mistress. A source tells Radar:

“Rielle has been very patient through all of this. She still believes that John is her soul mate, and she thinks that they’re going to get married.”

Let’s put aside the fact that Rielle’s real name is Lisa Druck. And that she “intrigued and appalled” writer Jay McInerney so much during their brief relationship that she appeared as a character in many of his books.

Rielle’s entire tawdry affair with presidential hopeful John Edwards has already been documented and recounted more times than we can remember.

She insinuated herself into his life, helped ruin his presidential prospects (though there are plenty of other reasons that happened), and had Edwards’ love child. The entire affair more than contributed to the destruction of the Democratic power couple’s decades long marriage.

Hunter currently lives in a home paid for by John Edwards. And to make matters worse, pops up every once in awhile to profess her love for him. Like in her Spring interview with GQ, where she explained:

"I know he loves me. I have never had any doubt at all about that. We love each other very much. And that hasn't changed, and I believe that will be till death do us part. The love doesn't go away. It's unconditional."

That’s probably a close estimation of what Elizabeth Edwards once thought. But regardless of whether John Edwards is even capable of loving another human, Rielle Hunter needs to learn how to stay quiet.

Elizabeth Edwards had a long, tragic battle with cancer that was littered with interactions with Rielle Hunter. She even took to print to disparage her husband’s mistress in her memoir Resilience.

The least Rielle can do at this point is just shut up and stay out of the way while people try to mourn Edwards wife right now. But that may not be happening.

Just last month, as Elizabeth was ending her cancer treatments, Hunter's "spokesperson" said that "she and her daughter, Quinn, see Mr. Edwards regularly." And now, according to Radar Online:

“She doesn’t care about anyone but herself.  She’s been selfish and horrible this whole time, no matter what else has been said about her,” the source said.

Even if those rumors aren’t true, Rielle is likely to pop up in the news a few more times over the next few months to “set the record straight” or for whatever other reason. Really, we just wish she’d go away permanently at this point. But if all that money that John Edwards has been throwing at her over the last few years can’t keep her quiet, we don’t know what would.

College Life: Students Need To Know About The DREAM Act

Posted: 08 Dec 2010 09:58 AM PST

Though you might have taken it for granted each time you jotted your social security number on a standardized test or a college application, you probably didn’t realize that those numbers were actually a pretty terrific privilege during the college process.

For high school students who went to high school in the U.S. as undocumented aliens (commonly referred to as illegal immigrants), higher education can seem like a nightmare. First, it’s tough to get loans and only ten states allow such students to pay in-state tuition rates. Second, despite working hard to get a degree, once an undocumented student graduates, without legal status, he or she is often left with few options in terms of finding a well-paying job.

Today, Congress is voting on the DREAM Act, which fights against this whole issue – and if you haven’t been paying attention, here’s a little crash course. Hold up. Before your mind glazes over at the words “Congress” and “Act,” this actually concerns campus life and it’s happening right before your eyes. They’re going to vote on it this very week. Come on, pay a little attention. At Indiana University, they even went on hunger strike about it.

If you’re unfamiliar, the DREAM Act stands for Development, Relief and Education for Alien Minors Act. If it’s passed, the Act would give undocumented students the opportunity to earn conditional permanent residency if they finish two years of college (or if they serve in the military).

Let’s talk about why this is important: without the DREAM Act, countless numbers of high-achieving students who grew up in the U.S. without documentation can excel colleges, but likely won’t be able to get a job or contribute to the economy afterward. With those odds, it’s a pretty big gamble to enroll at all (and many students likely don’t). The DREAM Act therefore acts as an incentive to pursue higher education and would give a healthy boost to the economy (all good things). In general, it would encourage more educated, motivated students.

In all likelihood, a number of such students are probably at your school – even if you’re not aware of it. At my school of under 10,000 undergrads, five students confirmed being undocumented to the school paper.

Of course, choosing whether or not you support the Act is your call, but at least now you can’t say you didn’t know what it was all about.

Gallery: Everyone Looked Super Hip At The 'Somewhere' Premiere

Posted: 08 Dec 2010 09:26 AM PST

Sofia Coppola’s new movie Somewhere premiered last night, which means we’re one step closer to watching it ourselves and getting to the bottom of some very important questions:

1. Does Sofia own the “soulless stare from atop a hotel bed” or can anyone do that?
2. Did Stephen Dorff’s Somewhere character name his daughter after the Clio Awards?
3. Why isn’t anyone letting us make movies about being aimless in Hollywood?

Just some things to ponder while looking through our gallery from the Los Angeles premiere!

Hipsters Forced To Confront Own Terrible Taste In 'The Room' Copyright Controversey

Posted: 08 Dec 2010 09:30 AM PST

Tommy Wiseau’s terrible cult classic The Room is basically our generation’s Rocky Horror, but without the music or Tim Curry. Kids get dressed up to go to midnight screenings, shouting their favorite phrases at the screen like “You’re tearing me apart, Lisa!” And Wisseau has achieved his own modicum of ironic fame, and was featured on Tim & Eric (who did much to propel The Room into mainstream comedy culture) with a new movie in the works as well. So why is an old review of The Room being yanked from the Internet?

I first saw this on a SomethingAwful thread: A forum user wrote about an Internet vlogger calling himself The Nostalgia Critic, who has found himself on the wrong side of copyright laws. Or so Tommy’s people told him when they asked him to remove his year old video review. Why? As the SA user wrote:

NC’s reviews are often 30 minutes long, and have tons of footage from the movies he’s reviewing. They’re practically an edited rifftrax of the whole movie. The entire plot is revealed, the most significant scenes are shown, and, after you’ve seen it, there’s pretty much no point in watching the movie.

Even worse, the review may be funnier than the movie itself, which would tear down this gentle fabric of ironic distance that hipsters like to drape themselves in when “loving” something that is objectively terrible.

Tell me, would you rather watch a 30 minute edit of “The Room” where some funny nerd makes fun of it? Or the whole long boring thing. I would pick the first option (haven’t seen the room, but from the clips I saw, it looks painful to watch).

Luckily, if you still want to watch a guy make fun of your beloved shitty film, the review is still up on YouTube. Go watch it before it’s taken down!

Exclusive: The Battle Between 16 And Pregnant's Christinna And Her Grandmother-In-Law

Posted: 08 Dec 2010 09:40 AM PST

Last week on 16 And Pregnant, teen mom Christinna Renee Robinson got into an all out battle with her in-laws on MTV. Christinna was married at the time in Tennessee, but she’s since split from her husband Isiah and is living in New York with her mother. She told Radar Online today that leaving her husband Isiah was the hardest decision she’s had to make.

But her grandmother-in-law Kathleen Green tells Crushable a different story.

Christinna tells Radar:

“My biggest challenge was my relationship with Isiah. I spent months debating on whether to leave him or not. I wanted to make sure that my decision was in Destiny’s best interest and that I was setting the best example possible for her. I didn’t want Destiny to grow up and think that getting a divorce was acceptable, BUT I didn’t want Destiny to grow up and think that our marriage was how her marriage should be either. It was hard to leave Isiah, but I am happy with the choice I made because I know that it was in Destiny’s best interest.”

But according to Kathleen, Christinna didn’t leave by choice:

“She didn’t leave Isiah. He told her to leave.  After all the fighting, he was sick of her.”

Furthermore, Kathleen says that Christinna has yet to file for divorce from Isiah and suspects that she’s putting it off because she still doesn’t want to take that dreaded DNA test:

“First of all, she won’t take the DNA test. She’s telling everybody that she’s gonna take the test.
MTV was going to pay for the test. She’s also saying that she filed for divorce. We’re waiting on papers, but we haven’t seen them.”

In addition, everyone in Isiah’s family is now upset with Christinna and her mother because they apparently took all of the couple’s belongings when Christinna moved up to New York. Says Kathleen:

“They took everything out of their house. TV, everything. They were married, but he bought those things with his money. And they took all that stuff to her mother’s house.”

What do you think Crushable: who is telling the right story?

Celebrity Charades: The Best Game On Earth?

Posted: 08 Dec 2010 08:50 AM PST

Close your eyes and imagine the awesomeness of this party: Justin Thereoux (Muholland Drive, Parks and Recreation) and Sam Rockwell, joining forces with Billy Cudrup for an intense game of celebrity charades, only to be beaten by Team Jeremy Sisto. The F/M/K opportunities alone in that situation warrant a good twenty minutes of deep thought. Ready? Go.

Said Theroux about his losing:

"Sam Rockwell is a deadweight…We gotta cut him. We gotta recruit [Jeremy] Sisto. I'm just being honest. I love everyone equally. I actually love Sam more than Sisto. But Sam's got to go. Listen, I don't want to go on record saying anything, but Sam Rockwell is a fucking anchor around my team's neck." (Sam Rockwell, by the way, was about two feet away as Theroux spoke.)

Also playing was half the cast of the original Rent, which firmly rounds out our Fantasy Charades League roster.
