Bea Arthur’s Military Service Has Been Revealed

Golden Girl Bea Arthur may have passed away back in April of 2009 but the late comedienne is STILL finding ways to surprise us. Did you know that Bea was once a Marine in the US military? Yep, she sure was. For her entire life, Bea denied that she ever served in the military … but we now know she was not being truthful, and why. Here is a photo of the hard-nosed Bea Arthur as a young military woman and some deets about her brave service to our country:

In 1943, when she was 21 and known as Bernice Frankel, Bea Arthur enlisted in the military. Recently unearthed documents reveal she came across as a tough broad, even then. The Smoking Gun obtained the documents from her enlistment and personnel file, in which she wrote that she “heard last week that enlistments for women in the Marines were open, so decided the only thing to do was to join.” She also notes: “As far as hobbies are concerned, I’ve dabbled in music and dramatics.” But most interesting: A personality appraisal! An interviewing officer describes the young Ms. Frankel as “argumentative” and “over aggressive.” Under “General rating on personality,” the officer wrote: “Officious—but probably a good worker—if she has her own way!” A year after she enlisted, Bernice Frankel married fellow marine Private Robert Arthur. As she served as Bernice Arthur, her rank went from private to corporal to sergeant to staff sergeant. It seems that she served her country well — she was honorably discharged in 1945 — but her sole “misconduct” was contracting a venereal disease. Bea Arthur always denied serving in the military — maybe she didn’t want her medical history brought up?

I hadn’t even heard the rumors that she may have served in the military … and, to be honest, when I first saw this photo I thought it was a mugshot from an arrest in her youth. I can’t say I’m shocked that Bea was a Marine but … she will always be my Golden Girl. Bea Arthur managed to keep her secret in life but in death we can actually look back and be proud of her service to her country. She was a very special lady …. a very special lady, indeed.

‘Pirates Of The Caribbean: On Stranger Tides’ Releases A Batch Of Promo Photos

On Monday we got to see some really cool behind-the-scenes footage from the set of Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides and today we get our first look at a batch of new promo pics from the film! Among this collection of photos, we get our first look at the character Blue Beard the pirate! Fun!!


These photos are fun … I’m actually getting more and more excited for the new Pirates film. I know a couple other people who are also excited for the film … Pink readers Lisa and Yvonne. They are the lucky winners of the Pink is the new Blog Pirates Fans First! contest. They have each won a pair of tickets to Disneyland for Monday December 13 so that they can participate in a fun Pirates 4 event there. Anne Hathaway & Jake Gyllenhaal Pose With An Adorable Baby Girl

Earlier today we saw a few photos of Jake Gyllenhaal and Taylor Swift that he would prefer we not see but right now we get to see an even cuter photo that I believe he does want us all to see. While they were still in Australia promoting their film Love and Other Drugs, Jake and costar Anne Hathaway paid a visit to Sydney Children’s Hospital and posed with the sweetest little baby. Here is a picture of Jathaway and little Payton Gilmour lookin’ as cute as can be:

This week little Payton, six months old to the day, received a visit from Hollywood superstars Gyllenhaal and Anne Hathaway just hours before being brought home to Wollongong from the Sydney Children’s Hospital. The celebrity visit was a stroke of good luck for Payton’s parents Sharon and Andy Gilmour, who have had to deal with their daughter living every day in hospital since she was born with her small intestine not properly formed. Payton has endured major operations and been fed through a tube to her stomach, but is now back in Wollongong Hospital, closer to her parents’ home. For months she has been cared for by nurses as well as her mum and family, who travelled from Wollongong each day. So to her the arms of heart-throb Gyllenhaal, recently toned for his role in action flick Prince of Persia, was just another friendly cuddle. But for Hathaway and Gyllenhaal, who played lovers in Brokeback Mountain as well as in their new flick Love and Other Drugs, seeing the cute bubs of Sydney may be the spark that finally gets them breeding. There have been no kids in sight for the stars – both have been unlucky in love.

In a perfect world, we’d get to see more photos of Jake and Anne together (and NONE of Jake and Taylor) but, alas, we live in an imperfect world :( Ugh … will you just look at how perfect Jake and Anne look with a little baby between them? ::SIGH:: If only Jathaway were a real romantic couple … If only.

Rachel Zoe & Baby Bump Films New Scenes For Her TV Show

About a month ago celebrity stylist and reality TV star Rachel Zoe confirmed to the world that she is pregnant with her first child. Today we get to see Zoe and her teeny tiny Baby Bump out and about in SoCal filming scenes for the upcoming season of Bravo TV series The Rachel Zoe Project … behold:

ou would expect a celebrity stylist to know how to keep a baby bump fashionably covered and that is exactly what Rachel Zoe achieved Wednesday. The pregnant reality star and stylist to the stars wore a chic black get up as she filmed scenes for a new episode of the Rachel Zoe Project at the Dolce & Gabana store in Beverly Hills. The petite star, who announced last month that she was expecting her first child, kept her bump hidden under a flowing shirt paired with skinny black jeans, a leather jacket and thigh high black suede boots with enormous heels. The star paired her outfit with a chunky gold necklace and a classic black Hermes Birkin bag. Rachel, 39, confirmed the pregnancy rumours in mid-November via Twitter, admitting that her and husband Rodger Berman will welcome a baby in the spring.

As I expected, Rachel Zoe‘s Baby Bump looks like a pea. I’m not sure how early in her pregnancy she is but I sincerely doubt she will get as big as other moms-to-be. Zoe is just so tiny, I don’t think her body is capable of getting much larger. She makes a cute pregs lady, tho. Great outfit, too. The Rachel Zoe Bump Watch is officially underway.

Another Photo Of Britney Spears & Jason Trawick In Mexico Surfaces

On Wednesday we got to see the first photo of Britney Spears and Jason Trawick on holiday in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico last weekend for Britney‘s 29th birthday. Today we get to see another photo from their trip newly surfaced on the Interwebs:


I tossed in the pic we saw earlier as well just because Britwick look so good together ;) My guess is that Britney and Jason will continue to enjoy as much romantic downtime as they can for the rest of the year … cuz come January, Britney will be hard at work promoting the release of her next album. Choreographer Brian Friedman has confirmed on his official Facebook profile that he is working with Britney on new stuff … he shares:

Michigan Fits Like A Glove Mitten

Yesterday was my first full day here in Detroit Rock City and I managed to make the most out of it considering how little I really wanted to do. Sarah and I spent the whole day together and then Mark joined us for the rest of the night. Sarah and I made our way into downtown Detroit because I had to pick up a pair of Michigan Mittens from GOODS Detroit shop on Woodward & Kirby. I learned about the mittens in the new issue of Hour Detroit magazine and HAD to get a pair. As you may know, the State of Michigan looks like a mitten and growing up, that is what we would call it — The Mitten State. Can you believe that I have never seen or even heard of mittens that feature a map of Michigan on them? Anyways, yeah, I picked up a few fun Detroit souvenirs at GOODS Detroit (great little independently owned shop very near the Detroit Institute of Arts) which I highly recommend for fun Detroit/Michigan inspired gifts. Afterward, we popped into Good Girls go to Paris Crepes for some snacky snacks and ate our faces off:


This morning, we awoke to the first snow of the year. It was only a light dusting but I hear a big snow storm is on the way for the weekend. Eeep! I’m well acquainted with Detroit Snow Storms … it could be nothing or it could be severe. I guess we won’t know ’til it hits … right around the time my plane is scheduled to leave for LA. Who knows, I might get snowed in for an extra day.

Tonight, Sarah, Mark and I have decided to see the Detroit Red Wings take on the Montreal Canadiens at the Joe Louis Arena and then later on, I’m planning on a fun night of dancing with my good friend Sergio. It may be cold but I’m trying to make the most of it. I hope all y’all have a GREAT weekend! Happy Friday!!

Oprah Winfrey Makes Her Way To Australia

For weeks, The Oprah Winfrey Show has been teasing a big trip to Australia for an entire audience full of fans and while the audience members arrived in Oz earlier this week, Oprah Winfrey herself only just got there yesterday. Believe it or not, this visit to Australia is Oprah‘s first ever … and she, apparently, plans to make the most of her visit:

Finally fulfilling a lifelong dream of visiting Australia, talk show host Oprah Winfrey is savouring every moment of her trip. The media mogul is touring around the country as part of her ‘Ultimate Australian Adventure’ for an upcoming episode of her show. In it’s 25th and final season, Oprah surprised her studio audience earlier this year with a fully-paid 8-day trip Down Under as part of the final. The plane taking the 300 lucky viewers was initially supposed to be flown by John Travolta but the recent birth of his son Benjamin led them travel on a plane flown by a non-celebrity pilot. Oprah, 56, travelled on her private jet with her constant companion and best friend Gayle King in tow. Yesterday Oprah visited Uluru (Ayers Rock) where she met with the natives and took a liking to two Anangu Aboriginal children. Completely unaware that they were being hoisted up by a billionaire, the two youngsters seemed in awe with all of the attention and fanfare that travels with Ms Winfrey. Oprah has immersed herself in the culture and even cuddled up to a baby koala bear called Elvis during a trip to Hamilton Island Wildlife Part in Whitsundays. After viewing the rock she addressed a media pack that had gathered at the site. ‘I think the word awesome applies… it strikes awe in your soul when you see it,’ she said. She said she will definitely visit the rock again. ‘Me being here is a way of paying respects to the Aboriginal people and showing respect for the land and their culture and all that this rock means to them and the continent and to the world,’ she said. Two episodes of The Oprah Winfrey Show will be filmed at the Sydney Opera House next week, with about 12,000 Australians expected to watch the filming live. A third episode will feature her guests’ travel experiences at some of Australia’s top tourist destinations. Oprah later took time out to dance on the beach with Aussie chef Curtis Stone who was cooking up some traditional Australian fare – a barbecue of course.

I absolutely cannot believe that Oprah has never been to Oz before … but, it sounds like her first visit is going to be AMAZING! I am dying to get my buns down to Australia and I know I’ll get there hopefully some time soon … but I’m deffo gonna wait until Her Oprahness leaves ;) Aussies, Oprah Winfrey is all yours for now … what do you plan to do with her?

First Look: Emma Watson In ‘My Week with Marilyn’

In October we got our first look at Michelle Williams in costume as Marilyn Monroe. In November we got our second (and, IMHO, better) look at Michelle as Marilyn. Today we get our first look at Michelle‘s co-star Emma Watson in her role in their film My Week with Marilyn … behold:

Film chieftain Harvey Weinstein wants to take Emma Watson under his wing and mould a big post-Harry Potter screen career for her. The studio boss was getting all excited (professionally!) over Emma after seeing her on the set of My Week With Marilyn (where she gets seduced by leading man Eddie Redmayne), and then watching the footage of Simon Curtis’s film. Emma, back in London for additional filming on the final part of Deathly Hallows, donned a wig over her gamine hairstyle to play the small but important role of Lucy, an assistant in the wardrobe department at Pinewood studios in 1956. The film’s based on a memoir by Colin Clark, who was Laurence Olivier’s assistant on the movie and who, during an intense period of filming, became Marilyn Monroe’s confidant. But he flirted with Lucy as much as possible in between takes. Clark described Lucy as ‘one of the prettiest little girls I have ever seen in my life… slim as a wand, curly brown hair, huge brown eyes and a wide cheeky grin.’ Harvey told me: ‘For ten years she has been this schoolgirl in the Harry Potter films and now you see her as a woman for the first time. ‘She has an elegance about her – she looks like Jean Shrimpton! – plus she has a gift for comedy and drama, and we’re just starting to see her range. I feel we’re going to work together a lot in the future.’ He was speaking before a screening in New York for the film Blue Valentine, which features powerful performances from Ryan Gosling and Michelle Williams, who portrays Monroe on My Week With Marilyn. The latter’s director Simon Curtis called Emma a ‘proper actress’. Curtis cast Daniel Radcliffe in his first role when he played David Copperfield in 1999. ‘It’s great to have given Emma her first job after Harry Potter,’ he added.

I am really excited to see Emma Watson in her first post-Harry Potter role. As I’ve said numerous times, I think she is a fantastic actress and I’m very confident that she and her Harry Potter cohorts (Daniel Radcliffe and Rupert Grint) will have long, successful careers in film. I must say, tho, that I’ve gotten so used to Emma‘s cute short ‘do that she looks kinda funny to me with long hair again. Still … I cannot wait to see this film.

First Look: Jennifer Lopez, ‘Love?’

Back in February, after her disastrous single Louboutins failed to catch fire on the airwaves, Jennifer Lopez got dumped by her record label … which threatened the release of her new album titled Love? At the end of March, we learned that Def Jam Records gave J. Lo a new record contract and it seemed like the release of her album was imminent … then … nothing … for months. It is now mid-December and we are finally hearing about Love? again. J. Lo debuted the official album cover artwork for Love? on a 10 Most Fascinating People Barbara Walters special that aired on ABC last night … and here it is:


While I am underwhelmed by the album cover, I am curious to hear it. I’m hoping that Love? has been entirely revamped because if it’s full of the same Louboutins crap, it’s gonna be a failure methinks. But, whatever the album sounds like, it’s scheduled for release next year (reportedly January or February) and we will soon be hearing the songs Good Hit and Take Care soon. Prince Charles Attacked By British Student Protesters

Things got very scary for Prince Charles and Camilla the Duchess of Wales in London, England last night when their chauffeured car (complete with police escort) was attacked by student protesters. Chanting things like, CHOP OFF THEIR HEADS!, the protesters hurled rocks and paint at the royal limousine … very obviously scaring Prince Charles and Camilla:

Things turned ugly Thursday as the Rolls-Royce carrying England’s future king Prince Charles and his wife Camilla drove into a group of protestors. CBS News … reports that some of the student demonstrators shouted “off with their heads,” smashed a window, and splattered the royals’ car with paint. The prince’s police escort quickly came to the rescue and the couple – unharmed, but clearly shocked – arrived safely at a gala variety show in central London. Charles and Camilla put a brave face on as they emerged from the car, quickly picking up their ceremonial duties and shaking hands with a few well wishers before heading into the theater. “They were whisked right through to hospitality where Camilla had a rather stiff brandy to calm her nerves,” reveals CBS News contributor Neil Sean, who reports frequently on the royal family and attended the Royal Variety Show. Police say the prince’s car, and his security detail, were caught off guard by a fast-moving group of protesters who converged on the area of the theater at short notice. Regardless of where they came from and how long they had been there, the violent group’s ability to come within inches of the man next in line to sit on the throne will doubtless prompt a review of security plans for the wedding of Charles’ son, Prince William, being planned for this summer … Earlier Thursday, thousands of students demonstrated in central London against a government move to enable the country’s universities to triple tuition fees – to 14,000 dollars per year. Sporadic pushing and shoving with the police gradually escalated, with officers on horseback brought in to break up the crowds. As night fell, it turned violent. Some demonstrators lit fires, others attacked government buildings. But it’s the attack on the royal car that’s grabbing the headlines this morning.

Wow! These student protests have been going on in London for some time now … but only recently have they started to turn violent. This successful attack on members of the Royal Family are very shocking to me. It is unfathomable that they British police force let the next King of England get that close to such violence. While I do not believe the lives of Charles and Camilla were in any actual danger, the violent nature of the attack on their car is pretty stunning. Undaunted by the attack on their car, Prince Charles and Camilla made their way to The Royal Variety Performance at The Palladium where Charles got to hang out for a bit with Pop Queen Kylie Minogue:

If anyone could help a man laugh off his blues, then surely Kylie Minogue is the woman for the job. The pop star certainly helped put a smile back on Prince Charles’s face as she greeted him at the Royal Variety Performance last night just moments after his car was attacked by a mob of anarchists. His Royal Highness looked like Miss Minogue was just the tonic he needed after the attack in which he and his wife the Duchess of Cornwall were surrounded by a baying mob just yards away from The Palladium. As the Prince walked into The Palladium theatre in central London, he came face-to-face with the Australian superstar, who looked just as delighted to see him. And they appeared to share a joke as they shook hands and greeted each other warmly at the annual concert. Her choice of outfit surely didn’t go unnoticed either as she stood out from everyone else in a tiny red leather dress with rather kinky matching lace-up, thigh-high, stiletto heeled peep-toed boots that had a hint of fetish club to them.

Well, if I was to be attacked by a mob of angry people throwing things at me, I think the sight of Kylie Minogue in her hot red leather outfit would cheer me up considerably. I must confess, I do not know enough about the reason for the student protests in England to make a comment about whether they are right or wrong but I personally do feel bad for Charles and Camilla. Just yesterday we got to see the couple’s happy Xmas card photo … the sight of Camilla looking so fearful is a real bum out.

‘Thor’ Releases A First Teaser Movie Poster

Back in October we got to see a new promo photo from the upcoming Marvel Comics film Thor on the cover of an issue of Empire magazine and today we learn that that photo is being used as the film’s first official teaser poster:


While I really love this photo and think it makes for a GREAT poster, I’m kinda bummed that the first teaser poster features a photo that was released 2 months ago. If you consider that we got to see the first movie trailer all the way back in July, you’d think the folks at Marvel would have NEW promo stuff to use by now. In any event, Thor is one of my MUST SEE movies for 2011 so I’m just excited to see any promo materials, to be honest. Still, I am hoping we’ll get to see something new some time soon ;)

Jake Gyllenhaal Does Not Want You To See Him Hangin’ Out With Taylor Swift

When last we saw Jake Gyllenhaal and Taylor Swift together in the same proximity, the pair were all cutesy smiles on the cover of US Weekly magazine. Yesterday, Jake and Taylor coupled up again in SoCal … but Jakey poo was not too keen on anyone seeing them together. It turns out that Jake called the cops on some paparazzi who were trying to photograph them together — Yikes!

Jake Gyllenhaal turned the cops on paparazzi trailing him and Taylor Swift in Los Angeles on Thursday, December 9. LAPD was quick to respond to Gyllenhaal’s call with patrol car and reportedly even a helicopter. Gyllenhaal and Swift were cruising in an Audi Q7 when the incident happened. According to an x17.com photog trailing the couple Gyllenhaal “didn’t want anyone to get a shot of him and Taylor together.” Swift, 20, and Gyllenhaal, 29, feature together on the cover of the current issue of Us Weekly, taking an afternoon stroll in Brooklyn’s Park Slope neighborhood in New York City, in what appears to be a posed shot for which they were probably paid handsomely.

Okay … I get that celebs sometimes get tired of being photographed but I think it would be much safer if Jake would just focus on driving his car rather than yelling at anyone in any other car while driving. Besides, if he’s so ashamed of being seen with Taylor, why is hanging out with her in the first place? I keed, I keed. It would appear that these hangout sessions between Jakey and Taylor aren’t going away anytime soon … which totally bums me out.

Miley Cyrus Caught Puffin’ On A Bong

Miley Cyrus is 18, y’all …. and that means she is growin’ up. It also means that she is ready to experiment with new things on camera … for example, TMZ managed to get hold of a video recorded around Miley‘s recent 18th birthday that clearly shows her smoking something from a water bong (a device usually associated with marijuana use). Now, it’s not unusual for kids her age to experiment with things … but it is kinda unusual for a celebrity of her magnitude to be DUMB enough to experiment with drug paraphernalia on camera:

Miley Cyrus celebrated her 18th birthday by experimenting with a bong and catching a case of the giggles. The video was shot during a party at Miley’s L.A. area home 5 days after her 18th birthday. According to a source connected with Miley … the smoke filling the bong is a natural herb called Salvia which has psychedelic qualities. Possession of salvia is legal in California. As for the video … the source tells us it was shot by one of Miley’s friends — and theory is that someone stole or copied the video from that friend’s camera.

Yeah … I’m not sure I’m buying this “Salvia” business … but it is possible. NPR just did a story on the popularity of the legal herb among teens and young adults. What makes me personally suspicious that marijuana is being smoked in this bong is the very prominent appearance of breakfast cereal in the video (the Bush song playing the background is another red flag). Munchies are also usually associated with weed. BUT, whatever the Hell Miley is smokin’, she’s an idiot for doing so ON CAMERA! It’s clear she trusts the friend recording her and mebbe it wasn’t her friend who leaked the video … but in this day and age, if you do something like this on camera … it’s going to make its way to the Internets … and the Internets never forget.
