An 8.9 Earthquake Strikes Off The Coast Of Japan, Triggers Enormous Tsunami

Posted: 11 Mar 2011 12:32 AM PST

Very tragic news to pass along … just a few hours ago an 8.9 magnitude earthquake struck off the Northeast coast of Japan that triggered a deadly tsunami that proceeded to wash ashore and wash away homes, cars and — very sadly — some people. The news is unfolding now so the story will change as more is learned but read on to learn what we know right now.

Eight people have been confirmed killed after a massive 8.9-magnitude quake hit northeast Japan, causing a four-metre tsunami along parts of the country’s coastline. Japan’s NHK television reported many injuries and showed pictures of major tsunami damage in the north, with cars, trucks and houses being swept away in Onahama city in Fukushima prefecture following the quake on Friday. Police said at least one person was killed in a house collapse in Ibaraki prefecture. Seven other deaths were reported in three other prefectures. A 10-metre tsunami hit Sendai airport in the north-east. Television footage showed people standing on the roof of the terminal building. The tsunami roared over embankments in Sendai city, washing cars, houses and farm equipment inland before reversing directions and carrying them out to sea. Flames shot from some of the houses, probably because of burst gas pipes. Military airplanes were flying over the worst-affected areas to assess the need for rescue efforts and an emergency cabinet meeting was held. The prime minister said in a televised address that the government was making “every effort possible” to minimise damage. He said activity at some of the country’s nuclear plants had been automatically halted and the facilities were declared safe. “This is a rare major quake, and damages could quickly rise by the minute,” Junichi Sawada, an official with Japan’s Fire and Disaster Management Agency, said. Many people were reported injured after a roof caved in during a school graduation ceremony at a hall in east Tokyo, the fire department in the capital said, after the quake hit. Yukiko Shimahara, a Japanese journalist, told Al Jazeera that the airports and trains in Tokyo have been shut down following the quake. Meanwhile, a huge fire engulfed an oil refinery in Iichihara near Tokyo, where four million homes were said to be without electricity. Plumes of smoke rose from at least 10 locations in city. The quake that struck at 2:46pm was followed by a series of powerful aftershocks, including a 7.4-magnitude one about 30 minutes later. Al Jazeera’s Melissa Chan, reporting from Beijing, said tremors were felt as far away as the Chinese capital. Japan’s meteorological agency warned that a tsunami as high as six to 10 metres could strike the coast near Miyagi prefecture, closest to the epicentre and the US Geological Survey issued a tsunami warning for the entire Pacific coast of Japan. The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center in Hawaii said a tsunami warning was in effect for Japan, Russia, Marcus Island and the Northern Marianas. A tsunami watch has been issued for Guam, Taiwan, the Philippines, Indonesia and the US state of Hawaii. Al Jazeera’s Marga Ortigas, reporting from Manila in the Philippines, said the military there had been ordered to help evacuate areas at risk on the east coast. Several earthquakes have hit the region in recent days, including a 7.2-magnitude quake on Wednesday. “Japan has been on high alert since the earthquake on Wednesday,” Al Jazeera’s Harry Fawcett, following developments from the Malaysian capital, Kuala Lumpur, said. “Japan is very well equipped to deal both with the initial tremors caused by an earthquake: buildings are systematically built with allowances for sway so that they are less likely to fall down. Also coastal cities have long had tsunami protection measures in place.” Friday’s quake struck at a depth of 24 kilometres, about 125 kilometres off the eastern coast, the country’s meteorological agency said. The quake was the biggest in 140 years. It surpasses the Great Kanto quake of 1923, which had a magnitude of 7.9 and killed more than 140,000 people in the Tokyo area. Japan lies on the “Ring of Fire”- an arc of earthquake and volcanic zones that stretches around the Pacific Rim and where about 90 per cent of the world’s quakes occur.

This is very sad news, please send your thoughts, prayers and best wishes to the people of Japan. You can watch excellent LIVE streaming news regarding this earthquake/tsunami online HERE.

Scarlett Johansson Shares An ‘Intimate’ Dinner With Sean Penn

Posted: 10 Mar 2011 05:00 PM PST

Last week we saw an interesting photo of Scarlett Johansson sharing a pretty cozy lunch with Sean Penn in LA and today we learn that the couple have reportedly dined out again. Incidentally, and totally unrelated, Scarlett is featured on the cover of the new issue of Chinese Vogue magazine. Read on to see ScarJo‘s cover and read the reported deets of Scarlett and Sean‘s “intimate” dinner together this week.

Sean Penn and Scarlett Johansson have reunited, this time for a late, cozy dinner at Hollywood’s celebrated Chateau Marmont. The two, who jetted off to Mexico for a day together last week, greeted each other at the hotel restaurant with a hug. They were all smiles and chatted quietly for several minutes before moving from one table to a more private setting in the back corner. Both dressed casually, Penn, 50, and Johansson, 26, appeared at ease with one another as they talked, smiled and remained focused on each other. The rumored couple kept the PDA to a minimum, but occasionally held hands on the table for brief moments at a time, according to an observer. Over glasses of red wine and dinner – salad for her and a burger for him – they chatted quietly. “They looked genuinely happy together,” added the observer. After 11 p.m., when their meal wrapped up, Penn and Johansson slowly wandered into the hotel lobby, with Penn putting his arm around her lower back as they made their way inside and eventually downstairs to the valet.

Oooooooh man, they are SO doing it ;) As I said before, good for them. I strangely think they make a great couple … so let’s see if they can make it work. I wouldn’t necessarily count on these two making it thru the long haul but, well, I guess it could happen. As for ScarJo‘s new Vogue cover, she looks great, no? I like the styling and the shorter hair. Things seem to be going well for little Miss Scarlett these days, don’t they?

Neil Patrick Harris, David Burtka & The Twins Holiday In Hawaii

Posted: 10 Mar 2011 04:00 PM PST

Early last week we saw really cute photos of Neil Patrick Harris, his hubby David Burtka and their beautiful twin babies Gideon Scott and Harper Grace jetting out of LAX Airport headed for NYC where daddy NPH needed to do some promo for his new film Beastly. It turns out that Neil‘s promo duties are finished because he and the family showed up in Hawaii this week lookin’ ready for some rest and relaxation.

You may recall that we previously saw photos of Elton John and his husband David Furnish vacationing in Hawaii with their newborn son Zachary Jackson Levon so it seems that NPH decided to take the hint and follow suit. Hawaii is fabulous, yes, so I can understand why the families would want to spend their downtime there. It really looks like the Harris-Burtka family is really enjoying their time in the 50th State. So cute, right?

First Look: Super Skinny 50 Cent In ‘Things Fall Apart’

Posted: 10 Mar 2011 03:00 PM PST

Remember in May of last year when we saw a super scary photo of 50 Cent (real name Curtis James Jackson, III) lookin’ super skinny and extremely unwell? You may recall that he had slimmed down for a film titled Things Fall Apart. Today we get our first look at Fiddy in the film and it is not a pretty sight. Tho, very surprisingly and based solely on the movie’s trailer, it looks like this movie might be a spectacular hit film.

He famously launched onto the music scene with his 2003 multi-million-selling album Get Rich Or Die Tryin’ – and 50 Cent has shown his dogged commitment to success in his latest film role. The 35-year-old rapstar – real name Curtis Jackson – underwent drastic weightloss to play an American football player stricken with cancer to the extent he almost looked on the brink of death in real life. The star went on a strict liquid diet and spent three hours every day in the gym to lose four stone in two months to drop to under 11 stone for his starring role in Things Fall Apart. The usually musclebound singer however has since put the weight back on since he finished shooting the film, which also stars Ray Liotta, last summer. 'Fiddy' said he was inspired to lose the weight by Robert De Niro who lost 35lbs for his award-winning role in Taxi Driver in 1976. Director Mario Van Peebles paid tribute to the rapper, saying: '50 was not at all what I expected. 50 is a really focused, bright, disciplined, affable cat. In terms of directing him, he's a dream.'

Check out the trailer for Things Fall Apart below to see 50 Cent in action:

The sight of Fiddy looking so frail is shocking, yes, but I think I’m even more shocked by the fact that this film looks so good. I actually got choked up watching this trailer. I’m thinking that Things Fall Apart may do for 50 Cent what 8 Mile did for Eminem. What do y’all think of this film? Does it look like something you’d be interested in seeing? Are you as surprised as I am that Fiddy looks like a good actor?

Mommy Cynthia Nixon Takes Newborn Son Max Ellington Out For A Stroll In NYC

Posted: 10 Mar 2011 02:00 PM PST

In early February we learned, surprisingly, that Cynthia Nixon and her partner Christine Marinoni gave birth to a baby boy they named Max Ellington. A week later, we got to meet the little guy when the couple released the first photo of their preciously adorable baby boy. Today we get to see a couple of cute photos of Mama Cynthia taking little Max out for a stroll in chilly NYC. As you can see below, the little guy was tucked away very safely, very warmly inside mama’s coat.

As you can see, Cynthia picked up a couple bundles of flowers on her stroll … and little Max happily tagged along. It’s a shame we can’t see the cute little guy’s face this time but it’s better that he’s safely and warmly tucked close to his mama’s bosom. So cute!!

Charlie Sheen Files A $100 Million Dollar Lawsuit Against Warner Bros. & Chuck Lorre

Posted: 10 Mar 2011 01:00 PM PST

On Monday we learned that Charlie Sheen was terminated from his contract with Warner Bros. Studios to star on the hit CBS sitcom Two and a Half Men. Almost as soon as Sheen learned that he was fired, he vowed that he would sue both the studio and his former boss Chuck Lorre for breach of contract. Today we learn that Charlie did just that … to the tune of $100 million dollars. Apparently this is the next phase of the Crazy Charlie Show.

The war between Charlie Sheen and his bosses is going nuclear. Sheen filed a multimillion dollar lawsuit against Chuck Lorre and Warner Brothers for breach of contract in Los Angeles Superior Court Thursday. The papers indicate he’s not only demanding payment for the scrapped Two and a Half Men episodes, but he’s also seeking damages on behalf of the show’s crew.

It’s smart of Sheen to pretend that he is fighting for the crew of his show but let’s be real here … Charlie Sheen doesn’t really care about anyone but himself. So say that he is selfish is a complete understatement. Sheen‘s attorney, Marty Singer, spoke with the Hollywood Reporter about the lawsuit and this is what he has to say:

Singer blames the cancelation of the remaining eight episodes of this season on, “Warner Bros. capitulating to Lorre’s egotistical desire to punish Mr. Sheen,” a theory that permeates the 30-odd page lawsuit. The complaint points out that Warner Bros. renegotiated Sheen’s most recent Men contract when he was facing felony charges for allegedly assaulting his ex wife Brooke Mueller. In his first interview after filing the suit, Singer tells THR his client was forced to sue to because Warners' position—that Sheen was fired because his personal problems rendered him unable to perform his duties on the show—is not true. "When a production company and network are willing to hire someone who is a convicted felon and accused of putting a knife to his wife’s throat, and they know that this person has substance abuse problems, it’s obvious that their position in this dispute is ridiculous," Singer says. "What Warner Bros. is really saying is you can’t mess with the 900 pound gorilla showrunner [Lorre] or you will get tossed." As Singer previewed in an interview with THR earlier this week, the lawsuit claims that plans were afoot to boot Sheen even before his series of bizarre media appearances over the past few weeks. The lawsuit claims Lorre has a financial incentive to de-prioritize Men in favor of his other Warner Bros/CBS shows The Big Bang Theory and Mike & Molly because his deals for those shows are more lucrative. In bringing the case on behalf of the cast and crew, Sheen has employed California Labor Code Section 2699, the state's private attorney general statute, which allows individuals to initiate lawsuits on behalf of others. Singer tells THR why Sheen felt the need to bring the others who work on Men into the lawsuit. "If you look at the quotes from Charlie from Day One, this is not just about him," Singer says. "Chuck Lorre could dictate who gets paid and who doesn't, and a lot of other people got hurt." Did any of the cast and crew ask Sheen to file a lawsuit on their behalf? “I’m not going to comment on what people said privately," Singer says. "But if the cast and crew did something on their own they would be blackballed. Once you file a lawsuit, you don’t get paid and you don’t get hired. Charlie is looking out for the people he’s working with. Warner Bros. can try to cast this however they want but the complaint speaks for itself." Warners on Friday initiated a private arbitration against Sheen but Singer believes this lawsuit should proceed separately in open court. "We believe this case should be public," he says. "The only reason Warners wants an arbitration is because they don't want the public to know the true facts. They want to keep things secret but they're not gonna be happy when we get into their internal communications."

Click HERE to read the full text of Sheen‘s lawsuit but prepare yourself, it’s a long and very wacky read. Neither WB nor Lorre have yet commented on the lawsuit … and they really shouldn’t. I find it very hard to believe that Charlie Sheen will be victorious with this suit … but stranger things have happened. IMHO, based on what we’ve been hearing publicly, it sounds like the studio was more than justified in terminating Charlie Sheen‘s contract. Now that Sheen‘s attempt at Internet stardom has died a lame death with the end of Sheen’s Korner, it looks like the new show that Charlie will be giving us — for now — is this ridiculous lawsuit. Heaven help us all.

Bauhaus The Archiv, Not The Band

Posted: 10 Mar 2011 12:00 PM PST

As David’s and my stay in Berlin is coming to a close we hit a bit of bad luck last night. David, unfortch, wasn’t feeling well yesterday day and then got really sick last night :( The only thing he could do, really, was sleep. I went out for a late dinner with our friend Mark and then we went to a party at NBI so that was my night last night. Today, David still wasn’t well enough to get out of bed so he stayed home while I met our friend Arthur at the Bauhaus Archiv museum. I had a great day but, yeah, poor David is still feeling a bit under the weather :(

The Bauhaus Archiv is set up as a museum of all aspects of the Bauhaus movement (ie. the school in Germany that combined crafts and the fine arts, and was famous for the approach to design that it publicized and taught) including art, architecture, photography, etc. Basically, the Bauhaus movement is responsible for all of the clean lined things we see in modern design stores like Ikea. The museum is really fascinating but not really that big. Arthur and I spent a little over an hour there and got to take it all in pretty entirely. Today was a very great, very German day.

On my way back from the museum, I came upon this fantastically gay proud Berlin bear:

I mean … I just love this city so much. I futzed around the city on my own before I made David get out of our apartment and go out for lunch. I think he’s starting to feel better so I’m hopefully he’ll be up for a late dinner tonight.

Tomorrow is our last full day here in Berlin … and I am really sad about it. We’ve been having the time of our lives and I really don’t want it to end. BUT, it ain’t over yet so … I’m gonna enjoy the city as much as I can, while I still can ;)

Lindsay Lohan Appears In Court Again, Gets More Time To Consider Taking A Plea Bargain

Posted: 10 Mar 2011 09:58 AM PST

Lindsay Lohan was back in court today in the continuing matter of her felony grand theft case and the whole thing was pretty much blink and you missed it. L. Lo was in and out fairly quickly, because nothing of any real substance went down today. Lindsay went before Judge Keith Schwartz and did NOT take the plea bargain deal (that comes with jailtime) … but the judge did give her a bit more time to reconsider. She will have to go back to court later this month and either take the deal or not … but if she does not take the deal and decides to go to trial then Judge Schwartz will then determine if she violated her probation and she will have to go to jail until her trial can begin. Homegirl’s got jail in her future, whether she likes it or not.

Lindsay Lohan’s judge is pissed … that TMZ got information about his sentencing recommendation even though he wanted it held confidential … this, as he has given Lindsay more time to mull over his sentencing offer that WILL involve jail time. Judge Keith Schwartz was beside himself, saying he told lawyers on both sides to keep the sentencing proposal under wraps. We posted a story shortly after the meeting, saying the judge would impose a sentence — possibly 3 months in jail — if Lindsay pled guilty or no contest … The judge has sent the case to another judge — Stephanie Sautner — for a preliminary hearing, but he’s giving her one more chance to accept his offer. Lindsay will be back in court before Judge Schwartz on March 25, and she can plead either guilty or no contest to the grand theft charge. If Lindsay doesn’t accept the plea, Judge Sautner will hold a preliminary hearing on April 22. At the same time Judge Sautner will decide if Lindsay violated her probation — and it’s virtually a sure bet the judge will rule Lindsay did indeed violate it. At that point Lindsay will go to jail as she awaits trial.

It’s very obvious that Judge Schwartz is losing patience with Lindsay … it’s also pretty evident that he wants her to take the plea bargain so the theft matter can be taken care of once and for all. Irregardless of whether she takes the plea bargain or not, she will still have the matter of probation violation to deal with … and it’s almost certain that she will be thrown in jail for some bit of time for that infraction. I suppose it’s possible that Judge Schwartz might be lenient with Lindsay on the probation violation matter IF she takes the plea bargain … with jailtime. I mean … in all likelihood, Lindsay is going to jail at some point. I guess we’ll have to wait until March 25 to find out how this all plays out.

Oh … and by the way … WTF? was up with Lindsay‘s outfit? It looks like her dress is made out of latex, or a condom. On the plus side, it was a more conservative court look for her so … win?

‘X-Men: First Class’ Releases 2 New Posters, 1 New Promo Photo Of Havoc

Posted: 10 Mar 2011 09:39 AM PST

At the start of this month we got to check out 2 very cool promo posters for the upcoming prequel film X-Men: First Class. Today we get to check out 2 newer promo posters which, unfortch, are not nearly as cool as the other posters … in fact, they’re both pretty terrible. To make up for the disappointment, tho, we also get our first look at the X-Men team member Havoc in a new promo pic released on the movie’s official Facebook profile. Check ‘em out.

Blech!! These posters are just horrrrrrrible. Not only do they look amateurish but the concepts don’t even work as well as you’d think they would. The previous two posters showed young Charles Xavier and Erik Lehnsherr with their X-Men alter egos — Professor X and Magneto — reflected in the water below them. These posters go for that feel but fail totally in the execution.

The new promo photo of Havoc, tho, is pretty damn sweet:

Lucas Till plays Alex Summers/Havoc, the mutant who can create plasma blasts. It looks like his powers get a bit out of hand in this promo photo. Altho the promo posters above are a let down, I’m anxious to see more. The promo stuff has been very cool, for the most part. What do y’all think of these new images? Cool, right?

Miley Cyrus Attacks Another Paparazzi Photographer

Posted: 10 Mar 2011 08:37 AM PST

Yesterday we saw a few photos of Miley Cyrus going off on a paparazzi photographer that she believes pushed her mother Leticia Tish Cyrus and today we see more photos of Miley going apeshizz on another photographer for, apparently, no reason at all. We also get to see video of the first Miley attack that clearly shows, IMHO, that the photog in question accidentally bumped Tish. Now that Miley‘s going off on a different pap altogether, could it be that the young starlet is starting to unravel?

Yesterday afternoon Miley Cyrus left the gym in West Hollywood, and for the second day in a row, the 18-year-old starlet became enraged when a paparazzi photographer got a little too close for comfort. Miley lunged at the pap after he got in her face, and though she wasn’t able to grab the video camera from his hands, she gave it her best shot!

While I think it’s great the Miley would be so protective of her mother, it’s clear from the video below that Tish was not “pushed” and was only barely bumped into accidentally:

I absolutely do NOT believe that any other person should ever be allowed to come into unwanted physical contact on purpose … but accidents happen. It would be a shame if Miley started lunging after every photographer that took her picture — an act that she clearly used to love and generally welcomed. Retaliation like this is rarely successful. It might not behoove Miss Cyrus to bite the hand that feeds her. What do y’all thin of this? Is Miley in the right or is she coming unglued?

Michael C. Hall Reveals That ‘Dexter’ Season 6 Begins Filming In May

Posted: 10 Mar 2011 07:48 AM PST

Movieweb caught up with Dexter star Michael C. Hall and they managed to learn from him that the upcoming 6th season of the show will begin filming in May! It’s kinda crazy to me how it seemed like just yesterday that we were talking about the season 5 finale … and now we’re already at the point where the new season will begin filming. Happy, happy days ahead ;D

We recently had a chance to catch up with the actor who plays Dexter, Michael C. Hall while he was out promoting his new independent film Peep World, which opens in theaters on March 25th and also stars Sarah Silverman, and Rainn Wilson. We took the opportunity to talk to Michael C. Hall a little bit about Dexter and asked the actor when he begins shooting the sixth season of the series. “Not until May but it’s definitely happening.” We finished up by asking Michael C. Hall if he is excited to return to work on the series and revisit the character again. “Yeah I’m excited. Doing something for this long is a crazy proposition but with this at least it continues to evolve.”

As you may recall, back in December we learned that MCH and his Dexter co-star Jennifer Carpenter filed for divorce … so the upcoming 6th season will be the couple’s first time working together since their split. While I have no doubt that each actor is a pro, capable of not letting their personal lives affect their professional lives … it still has to be kinda crappy to have to work on a day to day basis with your ex-wife. Still, I am very VERY excited for the upcoming season of Dexter. I assume we’ll be hearing shortly about which guest star(s) will be appearing on the show. Woot!!

Mel Gibson Pleas No Contest, Will Avoid Jail For Assaulting His Babymama

Posted: 10 Mar 2011 07:27 AM PST

Last Summer we were “treated” to a series of recorded telephone conversations (HERE, HERE and HERE) between admitted racist Mel Gibson and the mother of his youngest child Oksana Grigorieva that resulted in charges being brought against him for assault. Despite the fact that Gibson admitted to slapping Oksana (tho her injuries imply that he did much more than slap her), he has managed to work out a plea bargain deal that will keep him out of jail with a plea of no contest. Apparently as part of the deal, Mel will continue to receive counseling and Oksana is OK with the plea bargain so … yeah. Celebrity justice at work.

Mel Gibson will offer a plea bargain to seek an “immediate” resolution and avoid jail in a long-running legal dispute over alleged domestic abuse, media reports and his lawyer said. Media reports said the embattled actor-director would plead no contest to the battery charges leveled against him by former girlfriend Oksana Grigorieva after an alleged incident in January 2010 at his Malibu home. “Mel’s priority throughout all of this has been that the best interests of his young daughter, Lucia, and the rest of his children be put first in any decisions made,” his lawyer Blair Berk said in a statement. “It is with only that in mind that he asked me to approach the district attorney with a proposal that would bring all of this to an immediate end,” she added, without elaborating. The TMZ celebrity news website said Gibson was currently in Guatemala, but would be in court on Friday and plead no contest to a charge of battery, which is less serious than corporal injury on a spouse. Under the plea bargain, he is not expected to go to jail, but would be ordered to continue with counseling, TMZ reported. Police launched an investigation into the Australian-educated actor after Grigorieva released recordings of expletive-ridden abusive telephone calls he allegedly made. Gibson’s career has struggled since his 2006 arrest for drunk driving, which exploded into a major scandal because of anti-Semitic remarks he made to a highway patrol officer. In that case, he was sentenced to three years probation and fined $1,300, after undergoing alcohol rehabilitation.

Ugh. I mean … this is just gross. I totally understand that people are innocent until proven guilty but there is something about Mel Gibson‘s behavior (especially when he is intoxicated) that leads me to honestly believe that he is capable of violence and is very likely guilty of physical harm. It sounds like things have settled down in the feud between Mel and Oksana so her compliance with his plea deal is unsurprising. Is this justice? I suppose so … but I sure don’t have to like it.

Ashley Olsen & Justin Bartha Are Dunzo!

Posted: 10 Mar 2011 07:14 AM PST

After about 2 years together, Ashley Olsen and boyfriend Justin Bartha (The Hangover, Gigli) have decided to split up. It was rumored that the couple were planning to get engaged last year but, alas, it wasn’t meant to be. Ashley and Justin are dunzo, y’all!

Ashley Olsen is a single lady. The actress-fashion designer, 24, and her Hangover star beau, Justin Bartha, 32, have parted ways, a source confirms to PEOPLE. The private couple, who dated for more than two years, shot down engagement rumors shortly after they got together in 2008. Reps had no comment.

I honestly wouldn’t be surprised if many of y’all didn’t even know the couple were dating in the first place. Notoriously private, Ashley Olsen never really spoke about her relationship with Justin Bartha and vice versa. Altho I’m not at all a fan of the Olsen twins as a collective, I guess Ashley has always been my fave of the twins. Justin seemed like a good guy for her and I figured they’d get married eventually. It just wasn’t meant to be :(
