RIP KNUT: 50 Photos To Remember Knut By

Posted: 19 Mar 2011 02:14 PM PDT

A very, very terrible way to start the weekend. Our most beloved celebrity polar bear of all time, Knut the Polar Bear, has passed away in his Berlin Zoo habitat at the young bear age of 4. Knut was such a special little (~1000 lb.) guy. He was born into this world a reject, as his mother saw that world famous kissy snout and thought “Nah.” But the kind zookeepers didn’t give up, and Knut survived those rough infant days, eventually becoming what could be considered the most famous polar bear in the world. He was an international celebrity. A-list all the way.

Then things got a little different. The media began reporting that all of the attention Knut was receiving had made the little guy insane. Photos surfaced of Knut covered in mud, looking like a little polar bear candidate on Hoarders. He turned 1 years old, celebrated his Bear Mitzvah, and simultaneously became less cuddly and more murdery. In short, the Knut we had all come to fall in love with had basically turned old, ugly and crazy, like a little arctic Marlon Brando. Tragedy fell again in 2008, when Knut’s handsome handler Thomas Dörflein passed away from a heart attack at 44. Especially sad when you consider his resemblance to Jon Hamm.

But we still loved Knut. We had been through so much together! I even had the opportunity to meet him (from a 25 foot distance) on my trip to Berlin last year. There he was, covered in filth, lazily taking in the sun while his then girlfriend (yes, he was a playah) lay dutifully by his side. Ahh Knut. If we would have known it was the last time we’d be seeing you, we would have swam across that poor excuse for a zoo moat and given you a giant hug.

Today, Knut is no longer with us. What could have done him in at the young age of 4? Did the pressure of the media finally get to him? Did he miss his human papa Thomas? Was it that f**king Supermoon?

Knut lived a short bear life, but he brought millions around the world happiness. And so, with that in mind, we would like to pay our respects to him with the following tribute: 50 Photos To Remember Knut By.
