Interview: Lily Claire From Lily And The Parlour Tricks

Posted: 30 Mar 2011 11:01 AM PDT

Lily and the Parlour Tricks are a jazzy/bluesy/yet still poppy band that manages to sound both retro and fresh at the same time. We saw them open for The London Souls in Brooklyn on Monday, where they flitted about in matching ensembles, riling up the crowd with their special brand of high-pitched energy. Before the show we chatted with the band’s frontwoman Lily Claire, who talked to us about writing murder-themed songs and playing shows with circus freaks.

Can you talk a little about how the band got started?
I met the the guys — there are three guys — in school. I met them around the time I started writing music and we instantly just joined each other. But everything I write always has tons of harmonies and I was getting really frustrated because we needed female voices. And then we found Morgan and Jade [the band's female singers] and everything came together.

Have you been playing music for a long time?
Yeah. I've only been writing for a few years though.

Can you describe your sound in one sentence?
It's roots rock and roll – a little sexy and a lot of fun.

A lot of your songs are about guns and murder and stuff. Where does that come from?
Books and movies. Not from my own life. I read a lot of case studies of murder trials from the turn of the 18th & 19th century – I don't know why. And I watch a lot of different movies.

Do you imagine yourself as the persona you're writing about?
You mean in the narrative of the songs? Yeah, sometimes. And sometimes it's just storytelling. Mostly it's just storytelling.

It feels like your music conjures a different era, almost like it's a form of escapism
Yeah, the sound that we end up creating is sort of a variation of the music that I love. A lot of Elvis and Johnny Cash. The Beach Boys in terms of harmony. Tom Waits. It comes from everywhere, but a lot of it's from a very specific time that I think is the golden age of music. I figure you can't beat it. so you might as well try to join it.

Do you know any parlour tricks?
It's funny – we did a show in Massachusetts a few months ago. It was a cancer benefit, a big lovely evening. And before and after us was a circus act. And they knew a lot of parlour tricks, they were like eating lightbulbs and doing all kids of shit. The guy ate a lightbulb and afterwards he explained that he actually ate the lightbulb. Ithought something was afoot, but no, he actually ate it.

Parenting Lessons from 'Teen Mom 2': It's the Finale, So Everyone Has to Cry

Posted: 30 Mar 2011 09:36 AM PDT

It’s the final episode of Teen Mom 2‘s final season, and there are plenty of tears. Jenelle cries about getting arrested and being betrayed by Kieffer, and Jenelle’s mom cries about her daughter’s wasted life. Kailyn cries because she and Jo hate each other and have to enter mediation for their custody agreement. Chelsea cries on Aubree’s first birthday because she loves her daughter and Adam is a dick. Leah, Corey, and the rest of America cry at their adorable redneck wedding. There’s no start date for season 2, so it looks like we’re going to have to rely on tabloid headlines for awhile until these four girls and their families come back into our lives.

Twitter Feud: Comic Book Writer Ron Marz vs. Bluewater Productions

Posted: 30 Mar 2011 09:13 AM PDT

You’ve probably heard of Bluewater Productions, the second-rate comic book company that churns out unauthorized bios on the likes of Stephenie Meyer, William and Kate, Lady Gaga, and most recently, Justin Bieber. These stories are usually riddled with inexplicable graphics and bizarre plotting, yet they chug on along every few months with a new person to profile. For reference, check out our Art Crush gallery of their most head-scratching titles.

Yesterday, Bluewater got embroiled in a Twitter feud with comic writer Ron Marz, who has written for classic characters like the Green Lantern and Witchblade, but is also debuting a new creator-owned series, Shinku.

It appears that Marz laid down the gauntlet when he derided Bluewater for publishing a bio on Ayn Rand for their “Female Force” series, and the argument quickly turned into accusations on both sides about relevance and giving credit to writers. It looks like Marz has collected all of the tweets on his page by retweeting Bluewater’s comebacks — so as well as I can piece it together, here’s the back-and-forth, in reverse-chronological order:

Bluewater’s last tweet on the topic was advising Marz to contact their VP and work out the animosity. Then they tweeted about their upcoming Female Force: Angelina Jolie biography. Sigh.

The Daily Bieber: 30% Of Americans Expect Justin To Need Rehab

Posted: 30 Mar 2011 08:39 AM PDT

Justin BieberAccording to a 60 Minutes/Vanity Fair poll, 30% of Americans expect Justin Bieber to be in rehab by the time he’s 30. The poll was conducted by telephone, surveyed nearly 11,000 people, and centered on questions about where Justin will likely be in 15 years. We have several things to say about this:

1. Why is Vanity Fair conduction a poll, via telephone, about the hypothetical future habits of a 17-year-old pop star?

2. Who are these 11,000 citizens willing to interrupt their dinners of bacon-wrapped Jello hamburgers to answer a bunch of questions about said 17-year-old pop star?

3. What kind of a world do we live in where people have so little faith in maybe the one child star who’s actively trying to avoid a life of substance-related excess? Whatever else you want to say about Justin Bieber, he is clearly conscious of these things, going so far as to ban alcohol from his hotel room. If we all assume that all child stars are inevitably going to end up miserable and addicted then why, as a culture, do we support them?

4. Grr. Grump.

Original 'Degrassi' Stars Lauren Collins and Jake Epstein Are on Twitter

Posted: 30 Mar 2011 08:31 AM PDT

So they’re not the very first actors to have appeared on Degrassi, since the original show began in 1987. But I was excited to discover that two actors from first class on Degrassi: The Next Generation, which premiered on The N in 2000, are on Twitter.

On Sunday night, Super star Ellen Page tweeted about a podcast she was in the process of recording, with writer-comedian Steve Agee and several other famous Canadians: Lauren Collins and Jake Epstein from Degrassi, and Michael Seater from Disney’s Life with Derek.

In the podcast, Collisn and Epstein discussed how they’re still associated with the show, even after they left to go to school or pursue other roles. (In fact, that’s why Craig went to become a rock star — Epstein went to university.) Because they started so young, the writers really modeled the characters after the actors, so that as they grew up, their characters had a similar journey. (Though the actors’ lives were considerably less dramatic.) Collins still keeps up with the new episodes, even though almost none of the original characters still exist. And speaking of those early years, who can forget that rapper Drake was for a long time known as “wheelchair Jimmy”?

Further investigation into the Degrassi stars’ Twitters took me down the rabbit hole as I found other actors, and some hilarious videos and tweets referencing these classic characters and episodes. Collins, who has reprised the role of Paige Michalchuk (easily one of the show’s best names) in the 2009 TV movie Degrassi Goes Hollywood and on Shane Dawson TV (hosted by YouTube star Shane Dawson), retweeted a great Wikipedia page listing all of Degrassi High’s fictional bands — including Paige Michalchuk and the Sexkittens (PMS), Kid Elrick, and Downtown Sasquatch.

Speaking of Degrassi‘s musically-inclined characters, Epstein still makes goodnatured references to his character Craig Manning, one of the show’s biggest sources of drama: He was abused by his father, dated Ashley and Manny without them knowing he was two-timing, got Manny pregnant (leading to the show’s first abortion), became a rock star, discovered he had bipolar disorder, and got hooked on cocaine. In a recent Twitpic, Epstein poked fun at Craig’s early ’00s fashion sense:

I can still play craig right?? he tweeted. Epstein also appeared in the web series Little Cat Version of Me, playing himself and interacting with an awe-struck fan. If you do nothing else today, at least watch this video:
