NYC Opera Is In Trouble, Meets To Talk Future

Posted: 19 May 2011 01:20 PM PDT

NYC Opera Is IN Trouble

It's so sad to see this stuff happening to musical arts programs around the nation. Just recently the Philadelphia Orchestra had to file for Chapter 11 bankruptcy, citing that they'd be out of money by June. Now, the NYC Opera has a huge deficit looming, and contracts to renegotiate, and if something drastic and creative isn't done soon — there will be no more NYC Opera.

It wouldn't mean the end of all opera in the city, though, as the Met is it's own separate entity, proving profitable again and again. The NYC Opera was created years after the Met and boasted lower ticket prices as "the People's Opera."

Unfortunately, despite having critically acclaimed seasons, ticket sales are slumping:

The company's endowment has dwindled from $55 million to $9 million, according to audits obtained by the AP. And City Opera has put off announcing its 2011-2012 season as it faces a projected deficit of $5 million. The board chairman last month personally contributed an emergency $2.5 million toward plugging the deficit, company officials said.

In the latest tax return, for the year ending June 2009, the company posted a $9.5 million operating deficit, with net assets tumbling to about $17 million from $58 million in 2007. The 2010 return has yet to be filed.

It's so tragic to see this happen. The union has said to be willing to find new and creative ways to lower the budget without hurting the salaries of those involved, because they barely make enough money where having two jobs let them survive.

But, it has been said that they "will have to decide whether to bargain over reduced employment or, instead, strike and drive City Opera out of existence."

Let's hope that doesn't happen. We hope the meeting tonight is productive and someone comes up with a solution!

Lars Von Trier Makes Extensive Apology For Nazi Comments

Posted: 19 May 2011 01:10 PM PDT

Looks like he genuinely feels awful about what he said.

Earlier today, we learned that Melancholia director Lars von Trier was kicked out of Cannes for comments about being a Nazi and sympathizing with Hitler.

Now, Lars has opened up about his comments, and he seems to be VERY apologetic:

"I'm really sincere when I say I don't really know what hit me. I can understand if you take things out of context. This was very sarcastic and very rude, but that's very Danish. I'm very sorry that it's being taken the wrong way. I must say that I believe strongly that the Holocaust is the worst crime against humanity ever, and I do not sympathize with Hitler one second."

"I didn't want to hurt anyone at all [with this]. Sometimes I hurt people on purpose, when there's provocation that I want to get through that has a meaning. This doesn't have a meaning. I've studied how bad the Jews have been treated in [places such as] Poland and France. This is something that matters very much to me. And this was an idiotic way to behave."

At least he acknowledges that his behavior was idiotic. More from Lars:

"The reason why it's so big, especially here, is that France has had a problematic relationship with Jews, and you [as an interview subject] shouldn't touch such things. But on the other hand, being a cultural radical, you should touch such things."

"It's a major thing at the festival, and very problematic for the festival. And that's a little strange, because even if I was Hitler, what does that have to do with my film being here? It's a festival for films, not for directors."

And more from Lars, clearly feeling bad about the whole situation:

"I don't deserve to win a [Palme d'Or]."

"I'm not sure I'll leave Denmark again."

And here's Lars on his Jewish background:

"Half my life I've made very many Jewish jokes because when you are Jewish, you're allowed to do that. And now I feel kind of in-between."

"I'm very much into the Jewish stuff. Even when I found out I'm not Jewish by my genes, all my children have Jewish names. I'm actually — too Jewish….Oh….Don't write that. I'm just an idiot that should just say home in Denmark and never talk to anybody."

His comments at Cannes were REALLY awful…..but we'll admit that it sounds like he wasn't serious.

What do U think about Lars von Trier's apology? Do U think he sounds sincere?

Victoria Beckham Books Her C-Section!

Beckham Books Delivery Date

Not only that, but the baby will be born in the U.S.!

So when is the date? Well, if you're going to be born in the U.S., the only REAL date you could choose would be — you guessed it — the 4th of July!

It was first reported that she booked it at a London Hospital, but obviously if she's going to be having it in the States, that just isn't true anymore. So they booked the delivery at a hospital in El Lay!

Here's what a spokesperson had to say:

"It is no secret that Victoria will be having her baby in the U.S. - we will not be confirming the date although early July is correct."

Well, even if they don't hit that magical, American, date, we still wish them the best and all the good health in the world!

Arnold's Mistress Asked Maria For Advice On Pregnancy

Posted: 19 May 2011 12:30 PM PDT

Arnold's Mistress Was Weird

Here are some really bizarre bundles of information that have recently surfaced about who Arnold's mistress was, and how she conducted herself while in the employ of the household… and Arnold's Terminator.

Apparently Mildred Patty Baena was obsessed with Maria. She would even go as far as wearing some of Maria's clothing and jewelry, to having relations with Arnold IN their marital bed!

She would even brag that she was more of a wife to Schwarzy than Maria could ever be.

Not only that, but on more than one occasion she had the audacity to ask Maria for advice on love and her pregnancy! Maria, of course not knowing anything, offered up her help!

So wrong on so many levels. This is all according to sources close to Mildred.

That's messed up. What were you thinking, Arnold??

Rosie Perez Sues Law & Order: SVU Producers For Injuries

How unfortunate.

Rosie Perez is suing her former employers, NBC and the producers of Law & Order: SVU for injuries she alleges she received while filming a scene for the show back in 2009.

Filing the lawsuit on Wednesday, Rosie says that she was "recklessly pulled, grabbed, yanked, wrenched and/or manhandled" while filming the episode titled "Hardwired."

Her attorney claims that she is suffering severe pain and has numbness in her arms from the incident. He also says that because of the pain, she's been out of work for about a year.

Wow. That sounds really uncomfortable and we feel for her pain. We hope she'll be able to recover and can begin working again.

Gabrielle Giffords Surgery Update!

Giffords Doing Well After Surgery

We let you guys know a little bit ago that Rep. Giffords, who was shot in the head during a tragic shooting spree in Arizona, would be undergoing a procedure soon to fill the hole cut into her skull to relieve pressure.

Well, we're super happy to tell you guys that that surgery has happened, and that she is doing extremely well!

Such good news:

"She's doing really well. Everything went as planned. Her neurosurgeons are very happy, she's recuperating and she's actually getting back to therapy today. So it went really, really well."

They're calling it a milestone marker in her road to recovery, as this kind of procedure doesn't normally happen until the patient has been well enough to be released!

She recently was able to attend her husband's shuttle launch. And recovery from the latest surgery shouldn't take too long — most of it is getting over the anesthesia!

Awesome news, Gabrielle! We're thinking of you!

Smart move to do this now! We have a feeling that this love child scandal is only the tip of the iceberg!

Maria Shriver has reportedly hired lawyer Laura Wasser to represent her in potential divorce proceedings against her husband, Arnold Schwarzenegger, although sources close to the former first lady of California still maintain that she hasn't made a final decision about whether or not she wants to end her marriage!

Meanwhile, she seems to be keeping a cool head despite all of the public scrutiny, and was spotted with her children Katherine and Christopher yesterday, having lunch as a family at Taiko in Brentwood!

A witness reveals:

"She looked relaxed but was a bit pre-occupied during lunch with phone calls and she barely touched her food. She just seemed happy to spend time with her kids over lunch. Their conversation was calm and quiet. They were all smiling and seemed relaxed."

So good to hear!

We can't even begin to imagine how hurt, embarrassed, and heartbroken they all must be, but we're glad that to see them banding together as a family unit to endure this all!

You guys will get through this! Just keep on supporting each other and stay strong!

You're in our thoughts!

Pirates Of The Caribbean 4 Opens Big Around The World!

Posted: 19 May 2011 11:15 AM PDT

pirates-of-caribbean-4-huge-globally.jpg

Pirates of Caribbean: On Stranger Tides hasn't even opened up in the U.S. yet and it's already broken box office records.

The film debuted in 70 countries on Wednesday and has already grossed $18.5 million - $5 million more than Pirates 3.

In Russia, it made $5 million on its opening day, giving Russia it's biggest movie opening to date. This could be due to the fact that Johnny Depp attended the Moscow premiere, a first for the franchise. Star Geoffrey Rush attended the Australia premiere, while Penelope Cruz took a trip back home to attend the Spanish premiere in Madrid.

It made $3.2 million in the UK and also had huge openings in Italy and Sweden.

Even though critics haven't been too kind to the Pirates franchise, we have a feeling it's going to make a huge splash when it opens on Friday. People still love the original concept and who can resist Johnny as Jack Sparrow? Let's face it: The movie is a worldwide phenomenon. (Plus, there are mermaids in the movie!!)

University of Florida Vs. Jersey Shore

Posted: 19 May 2011 10:45 AM PDT

university of florida vs jersey shore

Rutgers University certainly wouldn't have a problem with this…

As the Jersey Shore cast begins partying it up in Italy, University of Florida students studying abroad have been warned not to partake in the Jerseyrrific festivities, at the risk of expulsion.

The drama all started when an abroad student partied on camera with the Jersey folks.

Here's the email that was sent to students following the incident:

"Any student who does agree to participate in the filming of the show, or who signs a waiver or legal agreement of any sort with MTV, will be dismissed from the program immediately."

While they're obviously still not a fan of their students partaying Jersey-style, UF Director of Public Affairs Janine Sikes released the following statement, contradicting the first email:

"Generally speaking, students may participate in activities outside their Study Abroad program as long as they meet the academic and living requirements of that program. This is a reversal of the UF administrator's position."

We're glad to hear it! As long as students are responsible, don't party TOO hard, and maintain their grades, then we think they should def be allowed to spend a night at the club with Snooki and The Situation!

Do U think it would have been okay for the University of Florida to ban students from partying with the Jersey Shore cast?

UPDATE: University of Florida's Janine Sikes is saying that this is all untrue, and she's calling out TMZ, who originally broke the story:

"Signing a contract as described by TMZ would not violate UF's Student Conduct Code and students would not be subject to any discipline."

All types of conflicting stories here! What's the deal, UF? Are you guys down with Jersey Shore or what? LOLz.
