Poll: Which Bond Movie Should I Watch?

Posted: 17 May 2011 11:35 AM PDT

In my Virgin Viewing feature, I watch classic movies that I somehow never got around to seeing. Past entries have included a pretty wide selection of genres, from Disney (Mary Poppins) to horror (The Exorcist) to action-adventure (Raiders of the Lost Ark). Next up: a Bond movie. I’m going to let you guys decide which one I should see, since I currently don’t have a horse in the “Best Bond ever” race.

Snap This: Gwyneth Paltrow Covers Bon Appetit Magazine

Posted: 17 May 2011 11:25 AM PDT

Gwyneth Paltrow‘s campaign to become the most famous person in the history of famous people has reached another milestone – the cover of Bon Appetit magazine. The actress’ cookbook My Father’s Daughter is a New York Times bestseller, so it makes sense that a prominent food and cooking magazine would want her on the cover. She’s featured in the June issue, and although the magazine hasn’t hit newsstands a food blogger [@chezpim] posted an advance copy on Instagram.

Does this mean that Bon Appetit is going to pull a Vogue and start putting celebs on the cover of every issue? I guess we’ll see if fellow celebrity/cookbook author Sheryl Crow gets the cover next month.

Former ‘Real Housewife of New Jersey’ Danielle Staub Is Now Working As a Stripper

Posted: 17 May 2011 10:40 AM PDT

Although she was booted from The Real Housewives of New Jersey, Danielle Staub is determined to stay in the spotlight. She signed on for an upcoming reality show where she and other reality ‘stars’ (including Jake Pavelka and Heidi Montag) try to open a restaurant. But our girl Danielle is smart enough to know that she needs multiple sources of income, so she has also signed a three-year contract with legendary New York strip club Scores. Considering that she seems to be really comfortable with her body and with talking about sexuality (remember when her teen daughters asked her to stop telling them about her sex life?), this seems like a good move for Danielle, especially if the club gets a boost in business from her notoriety. However, the deal doesn’t mean that Danielle will be there working the lunch shift every day. She’s reportedly only going to do one appearance in person and otherwise will do occasional spots on Scores’ website.

Do you think Caroline Manzo‘s son Chris Manzo will hire Danielle to work at that strip club/car wash he keeps talking about opening?

A beach in Turkey played host to a sand sculpture festival today, where the theme was Hollywood movies. This entry’s our favorite — how cute is E.T.? We want to grab a blanket and a book and curl up next to him. Plus, if he get a sunburn, he’d totally just make it go away with his magical finger!

Allen was co-created by Jonah Hill, and boasts a team of writers we know from there hilarious Twitters — dudes like Shawn Ries and Guy Endore-Kaiser.

5 Facts About ‘Pirates of the Caribbean’ Star Astrid Berges-Frisbey

Posted: 17 May 2011 09:50 AM PDT

As one of the new faces in Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides, Astrid Berges-Frisbey (who plays sexy mermaid Syrena) is about to hit the big time. So who is she, and what do you need to know about her?

1. She’s quadrilingual.

Barcelona-born Astrid speaks four languages: French, Spanish, Catalan, and English. Her mother is French and her father is Spanish. Since she only started learning English recently, she reportedly relied heavily on Pirates costar and fellow Spaniard Penelope Cruz (who knows all about learning a new language for a film role) for translation help.

2. English wasn’t the only thing she learned for Pirates.

In order to convincingly play a mermaid, Astrid took scubadiving lessons. Luckily, she didn’t have to deal with prosthetics or makeup when it came to her fishail – that was added in with CGI.

3. She just won an award at Cannes.

Astrid just won the Chopard Trophy, which is presented at the Cannes Film Festival. The award honors young up and comers who have potential in the film industry. The trophy was presented to her by Robert DeNiro, who is this year’s President of the Jury at the Cannes.

4. She’s very close to her sister.

Astrid has a six-year-old sister who loves mermaids, so she was thrilled when Astrid won the role of Syrena. The first time that her sister ever dialed the phone by herself was to call Astrid and ask her questions about the movie and her role.

5. Her next project is basically the opposite of Pirates.

Astrid just started filming an indie movie, El Sexo de Los Angeles, in – you guessed it – Los Angeles. The project will have her switching back to Spanish. Astrid has said that the movie might be a bit racy by U.S. standards.

Crushable Books: Life Lessons from ‘The Geeks Shall Inherit the Earth’

Posted: 17 May 2011 09:30 AM PDT

Flashback: You’re 17. You’ve just come home from school, and you’re a mess. Maybe it’s because the people you’d been friends with your whole life suddenly turned their backs on you in the cafeteria. Maybe it’s because you went another day without uttering a single word to anyone. Maybe you were ridiculed, or beat up, or publicly humiliated. Whatever the case, it’s always more of the same, and high school seems to stretch on for eternity. How much longer can you last? You don’t really know. And though adults keep telling you that it gets better, no one will tell you why.

We’ve all been there. A lot of us are still there, even if we’re not 17 anymore. But this is where Alexandra Robbins and her book The Geeks Shall Inherit the Earth enter the picture, and they enter the picture with two words: Quirk. Theory.

The subtitle of The Geeks Shall Inherit neatly sums up the book’s aim: It examines popularity, quirk theory, and why outsiders thrive after high school– an especially hot topic as cases of bullying and ostracizing in high schools continue to escalate, rather than to get better. But they CAN get better, and they can get better because of the phenomenon of Robbins’ quirk theory. But what exactly is quirk theory, you ask? To begin with, it revolves around something Robbins calls the “cafeteria fringe;” that is, “people who are not part of or who are excluded from a school’s or society’s in crowd.” The book itself examines seven individuals (Robbins calls them characters, though she is careful to stress that they are real people, not fictional creations), all drawn from the cafeteria fringe: Mark, nicknamed Blue, the Gamer; Whitney, the Popular Bitch (her own choice of title); Regan, the Weird Girl; Noah, the Band Geek; Eli, the Nerd; Joy, the New Girl; and Danielle, the Loner. These seven individuals all possess qualities for which they frequently find themselves under fire in the high school environment. Quirk theory, however, posits that “Many of the differences that cause a student to be excluded in school are the same traits or real-world skills that others will value, love, respect, or find compelling about that person in adulthood and outside of the school setting”– or, put more bluntly, the things people hate you for now, they’ll love you for later.

And you know what? She’s right. Here, finally, is why.

Robbins followed her seven characters as they struggled to navigate their final year at their individual high schools. She was privy to their ups, their downs, their trials and tribulations as they skirt around the fringes of their schools. However, instead of merely observing as she has done with her other books, she ran an experiment with her characters: Midway through the year, she issued each of them a challenge geared towards pushing them outside their comfort zones and teaching them to value the elements of themselves that others frequently took issue with. Each individual branched out, however tentatively, and they learned some surprising things about themselves and about the world and the people around them. Whitney, for instance, found as she worked to break out of her controlling “popular” group and mingle with others that positive change is a chain that benefits more than just one person. Danielle and Noah, both seeking to find ways to connect more to the people around them, found that even if it didn’t look like they were making, it didn’t mean that they it wasn’t progress. And Regan, in the most surprising story of the bunch (though for reasons I won’t get into in the interest of avoiding spoilers), found that it was only as she got older than she realized that her individuality and the way she followed her heart were attractive characteristics, not only to herself but to others.

The Daily WTF: Penguins Need Shoes Too!

Posted: 17 May 2011 09:13 AM PDT

Get ready for the cutest story ever: Lucky’s a baby penguin at the Santa Barbara Zoo who suffered a broken foot (because his mom sat on him to keep him warm!) that never healed. The problem began to impede his development as the poor guy could barely walk, so his trainers went to shoe company Teva, who created a special shoe just for Lucky. And now he can walk! Plus, the penguin had the good fashion sense not to wear his Tevas with socks, winners all ways round here.

Spotted: Abigail Breslin and Her Mom Go to the Movies Like Normal People

Posted: 17 May 2011 08:50 AM PDT

I usually assume that the only time celebrities go to movies is when they’re invited to premieres. But a Crushable tipster informed us that Abigail Breslin, her mom, and a friend went to a Manhattan movie theater to catch a screening of Prom.

Abigail, who is in town filming the Valentine’s Day followup New Year’s Eve, has kept a low profile since coming into town. Might she be a film star who doubles as a normal teenager a la Dakota Fanning? We can only hope so.
