Considering what a huge boon the William and Kate wedding was for the British economy, it’s no wonder that stores in Monaco are trying to capitalize on this weekend’s Prince Albert and Christine Wittstock marriage festivities. One store is even trying to sell red panties accompanied by a photo of the royal couple and miniature flags of Monaco and South Africa (where Charlene’s from).

Is ‘Doug’ the Original Hipster?

Posted: 02 Jul 2011 09:55 AM PDT

I have fond memories of Doug. Of the three original Nicktoons, it was by far my favorite, and I know I’m not alone in my love of green sweater-vests. But I’ll admit, I do frequently wonder: Is Doug the original hipster? Is he, in fact, responsible for an entire generation of hipsters? Maybe. Let’s take a look at the evidence, shall we?

  • The look. This is perhaps the most obvious place to start. I’m thinking of an article Dan Fletcher wrote for Time a few years ago where he described the hipster look as follows: “Take your grandmother’s sweater and Bob Dylan’s Wayfarers, add jean shorts, Converse All-Stars and a can of Pabst and bam — hipster.” Doug may be a little young to be hitting the PBR– he’s only 11, after all (12 in the Disney version, but we’ll get to that in a moment)– but that aside, that’s pretty much what he’s got going on, right down to the Chucks. Give him a few years, and I’m sure the beer will find its way to him.
  • The Beets. Like all good hipsters, Doug has a musical obsession: The Beets. They may not be as obscure as the music listened to by the average hipster, but hey, at least Doug is developing a unique musical taste early on. He’ll probably listen to Vampire Weekend and The National once he figures out who they are.
  • The banjo. Doug is totally going to be an indie musician when he grows up. Added bonus: His instrument of choice is the banjo. Way quirkier than the dime-a-dozen guitar.
  • The fixie. As Doug isn’t old enough to drive, he’s going to need an alternative method of getting around. Naturally, that method is a fixie. You can’t be a hipster without one.
  • Quailman. Underwear as outerwear? Belt as headgear? Bring it.
  • Porkchop. One day, Porkchop and his eccentricities will totally help Doug land the ladies. Besides, Porkchop is an artistic genius in his own right anyway, so he definitely helps Doug fulfill his pretentiousness quota.
  • He’s a lefty. This is not to say that all lefties are hipsters, or that all hipsters are lefties; but it helps with the whole alternative thing.
  • The dreamy disposition. Doug can frequently be found sitting under trees writing love songs to Patti Mayonnaise. Transplant him to Brooklyn and you’re good to go.
  • The underground hit-ness. Nickelodeon initially thought that of the three original Nicktoons, Doug was going to be the breakout hit. This turned out not to be the case; Rugrats took that honor, while Doug had the shortest run of any of the three shows. He did, however, develop a cult following.

And, perhaps most importantly:

  • Doug was cool before he sold out. To be fair, this isn’t strictly Doug’s fault. He’s not the one who sold Jumbo Pictures to Disney. But do you guys remember how awesome Doug was when it was on Nickelodeon? And do you remember how terrible it got when it became Disney’s Doug? Yeah, me too. Doug was definitely cooler back in the day.

Of course, one might argue that Doug’s sister Judy is actually the hipster of the show; generally, though, she’s more of a beatnik, which sort of makes sense since she’s the older generation and whatnot (she’s the proto-movement, if you will). However, I still think Doug stands a pretty good chance of being elected President of Original Hipsterdom. What do you think, readers? Is Doug the original hipster?

Interview: ‘Terri’ Director Azazel Jacobs and Creed Bratton on What It Means to Be an Outcast Today

Posted: 01 Jul 2011 03:05 PM PDT

Azazel Jacobs and Creed Bratton might seem like an odd duo to hold court on their new film Terri, but both men share the positon of being able to look back on the production from a distance: Jacobs as the director, of course, and Bratton as an experienced and prolific actor. Co-written by Jacobs, it’s the tale of an overweight teenage boy (Jacob Wysocki) who has the universal deck stacked against him: Taking care of his senile uncle (Bratton) makes him perpetually late for school, where he’s mocked for his size and quirks like wearing pajamas to class. It’s only after the outgoing vice principal Mr. Fitzgerald (John C. Reilly) reaches out to him through Monday check-ins and other adventures that Terri starts to appreciate his own value.

Both Bratton and Creed agreed that it’s unlikely that a single movie could shift the terrible trend of bullying that seems to be especially prevalent with the current generation of high-schoolers, but Terri is down-to-earth enough that it can at least be relatable.

“I don’t know if movies can change the thought process,” Bratton said, “but you would hope that some kids, especially the bullies, would be able to watch this movie, and realize a movie like Terri can change their perspective.”

The people Jacobs really wants to affect are the educators, like Reilly’s character. “I’d like teachers to realize the value, that can’t be measured in grades, of teachers that have their own particular way of making huge changes on individual bases.”

Those changes sometimes have to appear in unorthodox ways, Bratton noted: “Fitzgerald comes in with this amazing lie that opens the door to a conversation, but it’s his way of finding the mode of communication.”

Jacobs added, “What I love that John does is, he plays somebody who can’t act well. He portrays Fitzgerald, who is not a good actor. That takes some talent.”

This movie is stacked with impressive performances, with one of the most stunning being Bratton’s. Known for playing the kooky, possibly dangerous Creed on NBC’s The Office, he played that same befuddlement in a very serious direction. Uncle James is virtually an invalid due to a disease that’s never made clear, but it incapacitates him and leaves it to Terri to keep him from wandering into the street or burning himself at the stove. Bratton’s inspiration was pretty surprising.

When asked, he confessed that at first he was also in the dark about his character’s problem: “I asked Az about it, and he said it’s an unspecified form of dementia. He said, ‘Just find something.’ I had two mothers-in-law who had Alzheimer’s, and I went from that. I was scared of it getting too real, but Az was there to say, ‘You’re halfway in to lucidity.’ I’d ask him, ‘Where am I?’ and he told me where I was.”

It’s these moments of gravity that make the stakes of such a bullying narrative incredibly clear. “When I read the first draft of the script, I felt incredibly close to Terri, and I didn’t have a reason why. [In high school] I was somebody who tried to be an outcast; that symbolism was something I desired. That’s not Terri’s issue. Put him in anything, and he’d still be an outcast. This world was not built for him.”

Fan Fiction: ‘Monte Carlo’ from the POV of Leighton Meester’s Character in ‘The Roommate’

Posted: 01 Jul 2011 01:46 PM PDT

Leighton Meester‘s role in Monte Carlo is, honestly, beneath the comedic talent we’ve come to expect from the Gossip Girl star. She takes a backseat to Selena Gomez — who should be lower on the Hollywood starlet food chain — as Meg, the typical repressed, stern older sister who needs to loosen up. That’s why this version of Monte Carlo, where Meester’s psycho coed from The Roommate vacations with Selena and Katie Cassidy, is so much better.
