Casting Next Season of 'Teen Mom' Based on Facebook Fan Popularity Posted: 02 May 2011 11:00 AM PDT While MTV has never discussed their strategy for picking the 16 and Pregnant girls who end up on Teen Mom, I suspect there are a couple of things they keep in mind, like each girl’s factor for potential drama. However, I don’t know what role each girl’s popularity and social media activity plays, but I’m willing to bet that a girl with a strong online presence is helpful for the show. Based on that, let’s look at some of the fan groups emerging for this season’s group of 16 and Pregnant stars and figure out who might get picked for a new Teen Mom season. Although her episode hasn’t even aired yet, Danielle Cunningham is already garnering Facebook fans – there are two separate fanpages for her (it doesn’t appear she runs either one herself, but it’s hard to tell) both dedicated to getting her on Teen Mom. One has 266 members, the other has 72. Jordan Ward, whose episode kicked off season 3, has 513 members in her “We Want Jordan Ward On Teen Mom” Facebook group, plus an additional 7,169 fans on her fan page. While Jennifer Del Rio‘s 16 and Pregnant episode was controversial to say the least, Facebook opinions are mixed. She only has 209 fans of her “We want Jennifer Del Rio on Teen Mom” page (although they’re also holding a Mommy & Me cute baby photo contest!), but her official fanpage has 6,862 likes. (Also, the page is “ran [sic] by myself and my bestfriend Ashley.”) It’s clear that people love to hate Jennifer, which isn’t necessarily a bad way to get on Teen Mom. Though this season of16 and Pregnant is still young, it’s clear that the girls on this season have learned their lessons from earlier seasons and are taking control of their online presences as soon as they can. As for whether lobbying on Facebook actually helps get girls cast on Teen Mom, that’s yet to be determined. Still, one question remains: How does Chelsea Houska have 7,669 fans? Warmongering With 'Game of Thrones': Lord Snow is ANGRY! Posted: 02 May 2011 10:10 AM PDT Surprisingly, there wasn’t a whole lot of violence in this week’s episode of Game of Thrones; however, there were rather a lot of angry people running about. Just what were they all so angry about? Read on and find out! Post from: Crushable |
The 'Hunger Games' District 4 and 5 Tributes Have Been Cast, with Jacqueline Emerson as Foxface Posted: 02 May 2011 10:05 AM PDT Last week saw Lionsgate filling in the ranks for the 24 tributes of The Hunger Games, including one major casting announcement. Jacqueline Emerson will play Foxface, the District 5 tribute who gives Katniss a whole lot of trouble during the Games, thanks mostly to her skill at blending into the Arena and stealing supplies from other tributes without getting caught. Aside from voicing a part in the short-lived Father of the Pride TV series, Emerson has had little acting experience. She certainly looks the part, however — she has the steady gaze down, which is essential since Foxface never speaks in the books. The other three additions to the cast are unknowns, and would seem to play essentially extras: None of their characters are referred to by name. The District 4 tributes are Ethan Jamieson and Tara Macken; and Chris Mark rounds out District 5. Even if they don’t get a lot of exposure, it must be a lot of fun as a young actor to participate in the shooting of this film. And who knows — a particularly memorable two-minute cameo could lead to a pile of film offers down the road. 'The Real World' Is Relevant Again: Dustin's Porn Past Unleashes Wave of Sexual Stereotypes Posted: 02 May 2011 09:50 AM PDT For its twenty-fifth season, The Real World returned to the place where I believe the series started to go astray – Las Vegas. But this cast proved more interesting than the original Las Vegas season’s motley crew – namely because one of them, Dustin Zito (pictured), was getting headlines before the season even aired. Dustin had worked in the porn industry, appearing on a show called Fratpad where young men engaged in sex acts with themselves and each other. Though many people in the audience were aware of Dustin’s history before the show aired, his fellow cast mates were not. (The show is normally taped and edited several months before it airs.) Almost as soon as the season started, the roommates began to pair off. Dustin immediately started dating fellow cast member Heather Marter. However, he and Heather apparently didn’t talk about their sexual histories before hooking up. In one episode, Heather stated that she would never want to be with a man who had had sex with other men. Although I can understand why Dustin might be afraid of revealing his past to her, I do think he owed her honesty. Eventually, the truth about Dustin came out – because Heather’s mom had Googled his name. Heather was understandably hurt about being lied to, and the rest of the housemates’ reactions ranged from surprised to disgusted. One castmate, Mike Ross, even felt that Dustin should leave the house. As much as I think The Real World can be exploitative, I was impressed by the range of the castmates’ reactions and thought the show did a good job of presenting multiple opinions. I also felt sympathy for Heather – although I think her comment about not sleeping with men who have slept with other men was borderline homophobic, she did have a right to know about Dustin’s sexual past once they became intimate with each other. Although Dustin was wrong not to discuss his sexual history with Heather before sleeping with her, she also had an obligation to discuss her sexual history as well. However, my sympathy for Heather vanished when I saw previews for the next episode. To deal with her hurt feelings, Heather made out with fellow cast member Nany Gonzalez. Although Heather had expressed discomfort with male/male sexuality, she evidently had no similar problem with female/female sexuality. Later, Nany said that she believed it was impossible for men to be bisexual but that all women were innately “bicurious.” This damaging notion that male/male sex is somehow gross, while female/female sex is alluring, is both hurtful and out of date. I can understand why Dustin, who says that he is straight and that he was “gay for pay” in his porn career, would have been uncomfortable discussing his sexuality with castmates who had such absurd notions about sexual identity. In a truth or dare session when he admitted he once “triple kissed” a woman and another man, the other housemates were so grossed out by his revelation that I can understand why he was reluctant to share any additional information. It also seemed like Dustin is afraid of or doesn’t understand his own sexual identity. In an episode where one roommate got kicked out, Dustin said that he hoped the replacement cast member wouldn’t be a gay man and said that gay men go around sniffing other men’s underwear. While it’s up to Dustin to determine where he falls on the sexuality spectrum, it’s troubling that a way of asserting his self-identified heterosexuality is by insulting or making hurtful statements about homosexuals. Andy Dehnart, the openly gay blogger who covers all things reality on Reality Blurred, interviewed Dustin about being “outed”:
Ultimately, Dehnart and I come down on the same side, which is that any public discussion about sexuality and sex work is important to have, even if the people in the discussion don’t share our beliefs. Depending how the rest of the season goes, The Real World has a chance to become socially relevant again. Or it could just use Dustin’s story as fodder for publicity. Either way, I’m going to watch. Posted: 02 May 2011 09:37 AM PDT Nick Bateman is a dreamy up-and-comer who’s set to appear in Hobo with a Shotgun, which comes out this week. He’s fairly new to that game, but we can say with 100% confidence that dude looks amazing without a shirt. Here are five more things to know about Nick: 1. He has a crazy long name. Ready? Nicholas Kevin Stanley Yunge-Bateman! 2. He was born in Canada and is 25, which means he’s 25 in Canadian years. 3. Nick got his start as a model (obviously, right?), where he did a lot of work for Abercrombie and once wore a Speedo for Calvin Klein. 4. He’s a four-time World Champion in Martial Arts/Weapons and he used to own a karate studio. We suppose that explains the abs. 5. He’s a nice family boy! Asked whether he’d bring his family to see the gruesome Hobo, Nick said this:
