Ashton Kutcher’s Twitter account got hacked

Posted: 03 Mar 2011 09:14 AM PST

ashtonpunked
Ashton Kutcher’s Twitter account was hacked, but unfortunately the hackers weren’t fifteen year old high school students who wanted to complain about wasting two hours of their lives watching Killers. They weren’t porn moguls who wanted to promote their little-known Butterfly Effect sex parody for free. (I could go on.) It was part of a tech conference that Ashton was taking part in, in which people supposedly gained access to his account and used it to bring awareness to the need for SSL (secure socket layer) be turned on by default in Twitter. Without SSL, it’s easy for hackers to gain access to users’ passwords when they’re on an unsecured/open wireless connection. (Or even if the wireless has a password that they know as well.) Ashton hasn’t updated his Twitter account after the breach occurred, so I’m thinking he might have co-signed it (or staged it) for publicity purposes. Here’s more:

Ashton Kutcher, whom most people will know for his TV work on That 70s Show, and his own produced show called Punk'd, seems to have got a taste of his own medicine recently when at this years TED conference his Twitter account, with more than 6 million followers, got hacked.

Not much of a big deal you may think, but the TED venue is a world-famous conference that consists of some of the top elite spokes people (i.e. Bill Gates) and the hacker was using this event to make a point over the security of Twitter and Facebook.

Out of the two messages that the hacker posted on the Twitter site, the first seemed to be harmless enough as it reads:

Ashton, you've been Punk'd," "This account is not secure. Dude, where's my SSL?

The second message was more political but they both point to the same thing: a lack of security:

P.S. This is for those young protesters around the world who deserve not to have their Facebook & Twitter accounts hacked like this. #SSL

The SSL parts stands for Secure Sockets Layer and you will mostly see this on websites in the form of https or a small padlock symbol down in the lower right hand corner of your browser. Without it any data that is transmitted on the page will be insecure and vulnerable to hacks. But it's this feature that so many Twitter and Facebook fans have long cried out for to help secure their accounts.

So the hacker's successful entries into Kutcher's account was more to prove a point than to be malicious, but it does highlight how insecure Twitter is. Even though Twitter does have SSL it's not switched to by default. However, Twitter is looking at building this into future releases as a user setting, but for those who want to use it now, instead of typing in "http://www.twitter.com/nameofyourtwiitteraccount" you would replace the http part with https and that's it.

[From Geek.com via Wonderwall]

You can make sure that SSL is turned on by checking for https in the address line of your browser, as described in the quote above. If you’re on an open wireless you can also use a free service to protect your computer, like Hotspot Shield or another proxy (many are free) or VPN. (FYI - both Hotmail and Gmail have SSL turned on by default. I think Yahoo! does too at least for the login process.)

As for Ashton Kutcher, he acts like he’s this big tech guy but he didn’t turn SSL on for Twitter. To be fair, there’s no setting for it that I can find and you just have to add an “s” to http: in order to access it. I hope the hackers changed Ashton’s password and contact information and make him wait a while to get access to his Twitter account. He’ll have to find another way to supplement whatever income he makes for going to events.

Matt Damon on if he’s he’s happy with President Obama: “no”

Posted: 03 Mar 2011 08:33 AM PST

I taped Piers Morgan last night because I heard that Matt Damon would be on, but apparently Damon is on tonight, Thursday. Bret Michaels was on last night, and he was pretty interesting and his health stories are incredible, but he didn’t say much we haven’t heard before. Advance details of Matt Damon’s appearance have him saying that he’s not happy with the way President Obama is running the country. To be fair, it sounds like he was asked a direct question about it and he answered it, explaining that he was particularly dissatisfied with Obama’s education policy.

I’m not going to get into politics here, (apart from covering this story, which I’m sure I’ll get yelled at for anyway) but a lot of people would agree with him on both sides of the aisle for many different reasons. You can’t please everyone, as much as Obama seems to try. Damon is surely going to get a lot of press for this, just as he got a lot of coverage for being one of the first people to criticize Sarah Palin. Here’s more:

When CNN’s Piers Morgan asked actor Matt Damon if he was happy with the way President Barack Obama has been running the country and if Damon was “a fan” of the president, Damon answered “no.”

Damon and the cast of “The Adjustment Bureau” — Emily Blunt, John Slattery and Anthony Mackie — are Thursday evening’s guests on “Piers Morgan Tonight.” During the course of their conversation, Damon and Morgan covered Hollywood, politics, fatherhood and much more.

“He (Obama) misinterpreted his mandate,” said Damon. “He’s doubled down on a lot of things.”

“In his State of the Union he didn’t even say the word ‘poverty,’ ” said Damon. “You’ve got millions of people languishing in it.” Damon, who backed the Obama campaign in 2008, said he appreciates that the president is a “deep thinker.” The actor called Obama brilliant, but said he “definitely wanted more.”

When questioned about what he’d do about Afghanistan, Damon said, “I don’t think the mission there has been very well articulated. And I think it would help to kind of reframe the way we’re thinking about being there and why we’re there.”
Damon also said there has not been a meaningful reform of Wall Street. He said he believes that is “dangerous” and “shameful” and that the financial crisis is “just going to happen again,” because “they don’t make anything. They don’t build anything.”

Morgan asked about Damon’s well-known disapproval of Sarah Palin and the fact that he has spoken out against her since she was announced as John McCain’s running mate in 2008. Damon said he still feels it was reckless to have someone who was “a complete mystery to everybody” be “literally a heartbeat away from the presidency.” Damon also said he disagrees with Palin politically. “She’s not somebody who I would vote for.”

Damon said, though, that while he is passionate about politics, he has no political aspirations.

[From CNN]

I’m really looking forward to seeing that tonight. Back in March of last year, Damon said that he was “disappointed” in Obama, but conceded that “politics is compromise.” He said “I'm disappointed in the health care plan and in the troop buildup in Afghanistan. Everyone feels a little let down because, on some level, people expected all their problems to go away. But real change comes from everyday people. You can't wait for a leader.” What a difference a couple of years makes. Or not.

Was Kate Winslet lying about “never trying” Botox or plastic surgery?

Posted: 03 Mar 2011 08:31 AM PST

wenn3233879

This time last year, I had convinced myself that Kate Winslet had gotten some subtle work done. Nothing too major - she was nowhere near Nicole Kidman territory. I didn't think Kate touched her eyes or her mouth, but there did seem to be some tightness on her forehead and around her mouth that could have been Botox or fillers, in my opinion. Anyway, I think Kate stopped doing it (if she ever was) because she's back to looking normal. These are photos of her appearance last night n Paris at an event for Vogue. She looks… good. Kind of boring, but not "tight".

As I mentioned a few days ago, Kate told Glamour Magazine (in their April issue) that she "never" tried anything. Her words: "My face is still moving, right? No, I have never tried any of that stuff…. I don't have parts of my body that I hate or would like to trade for somebody else's or wish I could surgically adjust into some fantasy version of what they are." Do you believe her? Coming from the version of Kate with a normal face, I do believe her. But if she had said it a year ago with her eyebrows seemingly frozen into a "surprised" look, I would have thought something different. Here's what I really think: I think Kate would never get something done that was permanent. No facelifts, no eye jobs, no nips or tucks. But maybe she is one of those women who doesn't consider a little Botox and/or fillers to be "plastic surgery" (notice Kate’s emphasis on “surgical”). If it goes away in a few weeks, why not claim that you've never had anything done? Oh, right. You're still participating in this “fantasy version” of natural aging.

Johnny Depp: Angelina Jolie is “a shockingly great mother”

Posted: 03 Mar 2011 08:02 AM PST

wenn3143638

Johnny Depp is currently in Japan, promoting something, I think. Oh, I see… he's promoting The Tourist! And he shaved too - you can see some photos here. I'd forgotten how nice he looks when he shaves. Anyway, these are older photos from Depp and Angelina Jolie's European tour for The Tourist, back when Jolie's style problems were raging, and Depp looked really bloated. Throughout the publicity tour for the film, Depp and Jolie didn't have a bad word to say about each other, at all. They were both really sweet about working with each other, but you could tell that they were both trying to avoid the "they totally got it on during filming" association in the tabloid press. Anyway, when Depp was in Japan (without Angelina, who is in Afghanistan) he was asked about Angelina again. He was nice:

Johnny Depp says working with Angelina Jolie on his latest film taught him to think of her in a different way – as a great mother.

Depp says he does not know how Jolie and husband Brad Pitt handle parenthood while juggling the distractions of being famous. He says Jolie is “a shockingly great mother” and remains calm despite all the paparazzi and pressures of fame.

Depp says he’d “probably be in prison” if he had to deal with as many kids.

Jolie and Pitt have six children. Depp has two with French actress Vanessa Paradis.

[From The Huffington Post]

Why "shockingly" good? I guess he's talking about the number of kids, right? Like, he would forgive her if she was a bad mother with six kids, just because of the sheer volume of insanity that comes with that many children.

Speaking of, this week's In Touch Weekly has a story about Angelina telling the kids that they're relocating from LA to New Orleans while Daddy shoots a film. According to ITW (via Jezebel), Shiloh and Pax “started throwing a tantrum…They threw themselves on the floor and cried.” And: "Pax got so upset that he ran and hid somewhere on the property and it took four people a half an hour to find him. Shiloh is super upset because she has a crush on one of her classmates, Pierre." Talk about burying the lead - Shiloh's boyfriend is named PIERRE?!? I bet Shiloh beats him with her cardboard sword.

Sienna Miller: It’s “human instinct” to be “selfish” when you’re in love

Posted: 03 Mar 2011 07:33 AM PST

sienna_miller_5_wenn3234100

These are new photos of Sienna Miller exiting rehearsals for the play Flare Path in London yesterday. She looks good - minus the too heavy and slathered-on red lipstick. Considering she was just in a theatre rehearsal, why the "hooker at night" lipstick? Nevermind, it's Sienna. Anyway, Sienna has finally spoken out about her most recent split from Jude Law, and the subsequent rumors that she was boning every guy she saw post-split (and maybe even pre-split):

Sienna Miller finds suggestions she dumped Jude Law for a co-star “laughable”.

The 29-year-old actress — who called time on her 13-month relationship with the “Alfie” star in January — insists the split was “amicable and mutual”, and slammed recent rumours she is dating Joe Armstrong, who she stars with in London stage production “Flare Path,” as “ridiculous”.

She said: “I’m single! Poor Joe is like, ‘What’s going on?’ We all find it ridiculous and laughable. I do feel very picked apart by it. When two people have separated and have both stated that it’s amicable and mutual yet, regardless of that. It’s not a nice feeling to have people talk about you behind your back and for it not to be true and for you not to be able to retaliate.”

However, the “Edge of Love” star — who first dumped Jude in July 2005 after it was revealed he has been having an affair with his children’s nanny Daisy Wright - admitted it is “human instinct” to be selfish in relationships.

Sienna added to Time Out magazine: “I think there’s a human instinct to be selfish, especially in matters of the heart.”

[From Time Out via CTV]

Poor Sienna! Can't she just bone people quietly without anyone saying anything? It reminds me of her reaction to being photographed topless with a married man - it was basically the same, "Woe is me, I'm SO MALIGNED" crap. Besides, given her sexual history, it does seem like the tabloids were picking off low-hanging fruit when they claimed she might be having a romance with any of the dudes she was photographed with immediately after her split from Jude. And seriously, it's not like Sienna is one of the top celebrity women or anything - she's a B/C-list actress who is more famous for who she dates and what she wears.

Speaking of Sienna being a victim, Now Magazine (a British tabloid) has a funny story about the on-going feud between Sienna and Kate Moss:

We know Kate Moss is never going to choose Sienna Miller as a bridesmaid, but after 8 years of feuding you’d think the two would be bored of falling out. Not yet, according to our spies!

Just weeks after Sienna, 29, and Jude Law called off their wedding, sources tell Now: 'Kate’s delighted they’ve split for good and she’s been calling Jude to make sure he’s OK.’

To add insult to injury, 37-year-old model Kate, who’s planning a July wedding to fiancé Jamie Hince, has said she’ll help Jude find a new girlfriend.

'She’s made sure he can come to her big day,’ says the pal, 'and she’s promising to find him his dream woman by the end of the year.’

However, friends in camp Sienna tell us she’s peeved at Kate’s interference.

'She’s finding Kate’s behaviour upsetting,’ says a friend. 'She thinks it’s immature. She can’t believe Kate’s being so indiscreet.’

[From Now Magazine]

Hahaha, the idea of Sienna bitching out someone for being indiscreet is hilarious. Kate has been on Sienna's ass ever since Sienna dated and dumped Rhys Ifans, a close friend of Kate's. I believe that Kate even warned Sienna that if she (Sienna) broke Rhys's heart, Kate would cut a bitch. Sienna promptly dumped Rhys for the very married Balthazar Getty, and Rhys eventually recovered from being Sienna'd.

James Franco attacks Yale student journalist on Twitter

Posted: 03 Mar 2011 07:02 AM PST

Did you know that James Franco was on Twitter? He is. And he's so "artsy". He's so "deep". He twit-pics photos of poems. FOR REAL. And he also twit-pics photos of himself, Portraits of The Artist As A Douchebag. Anyway, "The Artist" has yet to rise to his own defense in the wake of his stoned, lazy, pathetic performance as co-host of the Oscars. His rep issued a statement the other day, but Franco hasn't said anything, or tweeted anything… until a student journalist at Yale wrote a piece mocking Franco's Twitter (not his Oscar performance). So Franco tweeted this (NSFW language):

So, so clever. Here's more from PopEater:

James Franco who joined Twitter just two weeks ago to help promote the Oscars, is now using the site to defend himself against haters — namely a fellow student at Yale — who skewered him not for his maligned performance on Sunday, but for his style of tweeting.

“James Franco, your Twitter sort of sucks,” Yale Daily News writer Cokey Cohen posted Saturday. In her article, Cohen argued that the actor should do more than post “random links to pictures and replies to celebrities.” The writer suggested James be more “pithy” like Kanye West.

The critically acclaimed star of ‘127 Hours’ has so far been silent on criticism he was sluggish and even stoned during the Oscars on Sunday. He also hasn’t commented on reports that he and co-host Anne Hathaway grew to hate each other. (They looked chummy backstage!) But on Tuesday, James posted an image of himself overlaid with the words “F**K THE YALE DAILY NEWS” in red capital letters.

Cohen told The New Haven Register that her critical blogs of the star’s posts were “tongue-in-cheek” and that were supposed to be all in good fun. She says she’s actually a big fan of the actor.

“It’s funny how James couldn’t really care less about what anyone had to say about his performance, but went crazy after a writer at his campus newspaper criticized his Twitter page,” a friend of the star tells me.

I’m told that James had simply “had enough,” that it’s one thing to be called one of the worst Oscar hosts in history but another to get a lesson from a fellow student on how to conduct himself online. In case you were wondering, James is pursuing a doctorate in English at the Ivy League school.

[From PopEater]

The student journalist gave an interview where she said that her pieces about Franco were "tongue-in-cheek" and that she and Franco were just responding to each other all in good fun. I think for her it might have been fun or funny, but I wonder if that was Franco's goal. I really, really think that Franco thinks his whole life is Performance Art, and that the people who criticize him just don't "get" ART and how BRILLIANT he is. Douchebag.

Rumer Willis’s tight red curls: unfortunate or cute?

Posted: 03 Mar 2011 06:23 AM PST

closeup

Oh, honey. NO. These are photos of Rumer Willis attending some event for Badgley-Mischka last night. She changed her hair significantly. A few months ago, when she became "the face" of Badgley-Mischka, she had very, very dark brown-red hair, long and wavy. Just a few weeks ago, when Rumer was front-row at Badgley-Mischka's runway show (with Kelly Osbourne), her hair was more red than brown, but still longer and wavy. The longer, wavy style really suits her face - it softens her unfortunate head-shape and makes her look more feminine. Last night, Rumer showed off this new hair - more red, and tight curls around the face. It is just horrible.

So, now we know - Rumer cannot do tight curls around her face. Honestly, though, I don't think very many women could pull that hairstyle off. Which reveals the bigger problem: Rumer still doesn't know exactly what kind of hair, makeup and fashion suits her. Which wouldn't be newsworthy if she was just some girl, but Rumer has fashioned herself into some kind of model/actress/fashion girl/It Girl. Ugh.

Justin Bieber apologizes for flipping the bird to the paparazzi

Posted: 03 Mar 2011 06:14 AM PST

wenn3233065
Justin Bieber just turned 17 years old, and as Kaiser reported yesterday he celebrated by going out on the town with his 18 year-old girlfriend, Disney star Selena Gomez, after spending the night with Gomez in a hotel suite unsupervised. (I just reverted back to grade school and heard the word “ooooooh” in my mind.) In photos taken on the Bieb’s birthday night, Gomez looked upset and was covering her face. Apparently there were rumors that she had a fat lip from getting hit in the face by a crazed Bieber fan. That’s not true, according to her rep, although People Magazine notes that it did look like something was wrong with her mouth. It looks like she has a split lip, so maybe she fell or something.

One thing that is true is that Bieber flipped off the paparazzi that night. Gomez was upset and trying to hide, Bieber looked mad, and I think it’s safe to assume that the kid was fed up. The paparazzi regularly scream all sorts of nasty things trying to get a reaction out of celebrities and flipping the bird is a relatively mild response. Biebs was probably feeling protective of Gomez for whatever reason, and I don’t blame him for doing that. Look at this picture of how the two were swarmed. There are probably more photographers outside the frame.
wenn3233052

Bieber has apologized for flipping the bird, which seems to have happened quickly as our two photo agencies that have pictures of that night didn’t catch it. (You can see it here.) He tweeted: “had a great bday and at the end of the night we got surrounded by paps and i reacted in a way i know better… im sorry… it's not always easy but i know better than to react in anger.”

I would say there’s no reason to apologize for something so minor, but Bieber has fans that are extremely young and impressionable, especially now that he has that movie out. Just yesterday my six year-old son asked me if I knew who “Justin Beaver” was. I said I did, and that he’s 17 and a singer from Canada but that his name is “Justin Bieber.” My son was all, “ok, but I call him Justin Beaver.” Then he told me that a friend of his from school had drawn a photo of Justin Beaver jumping out of a burning plane. I’m not kidding! He also asked me if he could see any photos of Justin Beaver on my website, as he knows I write about celebrities. I’m glad we didn’t post ones of Beaver flipping the bird. When you’ve got fans barely out of kindergarten you have to be extremely careful what you say and do, and Beaver knows that. I’m still trying to figure out if my kid’s friend was just drawing Beaver in a cool action-type sequence or if he was annoyed by him and was putting him in a dangerous situation. I bet that kid has an older brother or sister who loves Beaver, at least I hope so.

Beyonce got $1 million to perform for a Qaddafi, donated it to charity

Posted: 03 Mar 2011 06:02 AM PST

wenn2810428

Last year, just after New Year's, there was a big controversy about Beyonce and other musical celebrities being paid buckets of money to perform in St. Barts at a party thrown by Hannibal Qaddafi, the son of Muammar Qaddafi. Bey was allegedly paid $1 million to perform (at least), and she got the brunt of the criticism in the media - I think because she was the "headliner" of the event. Anyway, in the wake of the ongoing Libyan crisis, celeb-watchers have revisited the controversy and Beyonce has finally answered: she gave the million dollars to The Clinton Foundation.

Beyonce’s hands are clean. After a recent RollingStone.com article urged the 29-year-old “Halo” singer to return the money she was paid to perform for family members of Libyan dictator Muammar Qaddafi in 2009, Beyonce’s rep tells UsMagazine.com that the matter has been resolved.

“All monies paid to Beyonce for her performance at a private party at Nikki Beach St. Barts on New Year’s Eve 2009, including the commissions paid to her booking agency, were donated to the earthquake relief efforts for Haiti over a year ago,” her publicist tells Us.

“Once it became known that the third party promoter was linked to the Qaddafi family, the decision was made to put that payment to a good cause.”

Fellow singer Mariah Carey, 40, received $1 million for a lavish New Year’s Eve bash in St. Barts, where she performed for Qaddafi’s son, Muatassim, Libya’s national security adviser. Usher, 32, also earned an undisclosed amount for performing on the same Caribbean island.

[From Us Weekly]

So… Beyonce did not spend a terrorist's money on weaves and diamond booty cream, fyi. But here's the part that bothers me: "Once it became known that the third party promoter was linked to the Qaddafi family…" Um, NO. It was pretty obvious that it wasn't an occasion where there was merely some tenuous connection to the Qaddafi family. This was a party HOSTED by the Qaddafi family. At the time, Beyonce was criticized in particular for her connection to Hannibal (who may also be known as Muatassim, I'm not really sure about that reference) not because of terrorism, but because he has a history with violence against women, especially his own wife.

Lady Gaga “models” for Mugler in Paris: sexy or not so much?

Posted: 03 Mar 2011 05:31 AM PST

fp_6898148_ang_lady_gaga_catwalk_01_04

Yesterday, Lady Gaga "walked" the runway for the Mugler show in Paris. Gaga has associated herself closely with Thierry Mugler (who rebranded his line to simply "Mugler") this year, even letting Mugler use the first remix of "Born This Way" for a runway show a few months ago. The above image is Gaga's entrance on the catwalk, and afterwards, she changed into a sheer, printed catsuit that I'm kind of loving:

fp_6898159_ang_lady_gaga_04_11

Disregard the eye makeup for a second, and just judge the catsuit on its merits: adorable, right? And well suited for Gaga. She needs to go back to "playful" rather than "I'm so coked out of my skull that everything is super-serious and humorless." The NYT had more about Gaga's runway appearance:

With ear-high eyeliner and feather "horns" in their hair, the models at the Mugler show were vamping and camping it up on a set with soaring arches like a Gothic cathedral. But however much they swayed their narrow hips in filmy tight-stretch dresses and risked falling off their brutally high heels, there was no contest — not even from the head-to-toe-tatooed male model on the runway.

All were upstaged by Lady Gaga, the great performing artist of the 21st century, who was clearly Born This Way — ready for her close-up in Paris.

"Mugler was and is my lifestyle," the singer said backstage, referring to the hard, sci-fi glamour of her latest album. For that, and for her jaw-dropping appearance on an MTV awards show wearing slabs of raw red meat, her stylist and collaborator is Nicola Formichetti — now designer for the Mugler label, relaunched in the spirit of its great fashion moment in the 1980s.

Gaga was wearing a semi-transparent animal print body suit with shoes 61 centimeters, or 24 inches, high — except the footwear was elevated without a heel. On the runway earlier, she had switched from a black sheer-and-shine form-fitting dress (somewhat obscured by the arty lighting and the curling smoke of her cigarette) to a full-on Hello! Madonna corset dress with a coolie hard hat.

But did those outfits, from a designer with a Japanese-Italian background and a high-flying career in magazine styling, really make their mark on fashion?

The show opened with the Mugler message of big shoulders, sculpted in the round, but soon the jacket fronts were scooped out on one side to reveal a latex bra and most of one breast. Semi-nudity, a visible bra, corsets and clingy, shiny sex-shop skirts are not exactly new to fashion. But the show had an unbridled energy.

And, as Mr. Formichetti put it: "I just wanted to bring the fun back. It's not so much about the clothes."

[From The New York Times]

What kind of crap is "It's not so much about the clothes" coming from a fashion designer? It's like saying, "Eh, we just wanted to get some attention, we're not expecting to sell any of this crap." But they should try to see the catsuit - it won't be flattering on many women, but I think there are a lot of drag queens who will be ordering it.
