Betty White: Comic Book Hero

Earlier today we got to see a couple of promo photos from Betty White‘s upcoming guest appearance on the NBC series Community and I mentioned in that post about how I can not get enough of Betty … that I want more, more, more. Well more, more, more is exactly what we get … here is our first look at the soon-to-be-released Betty White comic book from Bluewater Productions:

Actress Betty White first gained fame as a regular on the Mary Tyler More Show and The Golden Girls. But the actress, now 88, is enjoying one of the strangest career rejuvenations ever. She brought down the house while guest hosting Saturday Night Live and has become a popular pitchwoman on countless TV commercials. She’s even landed a new role in the TV series Hot in Cleveland. Now White will receive a new honor: She’s slated to become the star of her own comic book biography from Bluewater Productions. Female Force: Betty White will hit comic book stores and online retailers such as Amazon.com in November. The 32-page book will retail for $3.99. Writer Patrick McCray, a veteran of the comics industry, traces White’s amazing showbiz career from her days providing voice talent for the radio show Blondie to her return to sitcoms in Hot in Cleveland. “Working on the Betty book was an honor and a blast,” McCray said. “While covering a new entertainer is always fun, there is something special about profiling an icon. Not only did it allow me to savor nostalgia, it also let me catch up on areas of pop culture that had passed me by.” Todd Tennant is the artist on Female Force: Betty White. He, too, is a veteran of the art world. Tennant is a professional illustrator with 31 years of experience. He dove into the world of comics about 10 years ago. He runs his own online King Kong vs. Godzilla comic series, and is the co-creator of the graphic works King Komodo and Gigante. Tennant, too, said that it was a thrill to work on bringing Betty White’s story to life. “I remember seeing Betty White and her hubby Allen Ludden on reruns of the original Password program after school as a kid, and grew very fond of them even then,” Tennant said. “Betty White as Sue Ann Nivens on the Mary Tyler Moore show will always stand out as my strongest and fondest memory of her. Needless to say, I was happy to be given the opportunity to attempt illustrating Betty’s fascinating personal life and her prolific career.” Bluewater president and founder Darren G. Davis says the biography comics are a way to bring new readers to comics. He added that fans of White’s might learn a bit more about the veteran actress by reading Female Force: Betty White. “Betty White has had such an amazing entertainment career,” Davis said. “It’s one that has now spanned more than 70 years. The biggest challenge that the creative team behind this book faced was figuring out how to include as much of this career as possible in one comic.”

I mean … what could be more perfect than a Betty White comic book? We’ve already got the Betty White clothing line and books to look forward to, now we have a comic book on the way as well? LOVE it. I’m not sure what other goodies we can expect from the Betty White merchandise machine but I can’t wait to find out. Ashlee Simpson Gets Frisky At The US Open

While newlyweds Chelsea Clinton and Marc Mezvinsky were gettin’ smoochy at the US Open, oldyweds Ashlee Simpson and Pete Wentz were gettin’ their party on elsewhere at the US Open tournament. Ashl33n were spotted partying up in their private suit during the US Open this weekend and as you can see, Ashlee was in a great mood all the while:


I’m guessing all the free-flowing booze had something to do with Ashlee‘s mood … but as soon as a Fall Out Boy song was played over the loudspeakers, she really got into a frisky mood. Now, I’ve seen Ashlee party before … but never at a sporting event. What is it with tennis? It seems to bring out the animal in everyone.

Newlyweds Chelsea Clinton & Marc Mezvinsky Get Smoochy At The US Open

Chelsea Clinton and new hubby Marc Mezvinsky, who were wed in Rhinebeck, NY on July 31, showed up at the US Open this past weekend and they were lookin’ very much in lurve with one another. In between sets, Chelsea and Marc got all smoochy with one another … showing that the honeymoon is deffo not over for these two:

Their wedding was the stuff of fairytales. But just four weeks after their $3.2million wedding, it’s clear that Chelsea Clinton and new husband Marc Mezvinsky haven’t quite come back down to earth. The newlyweds were seen sneaking kisses while watching Venus Williams play at the US Open Tennis Championship in Flushing Meadows, New York. Hiding her blonde hair under a hat, Chelsea and Mark were seen out in public together for the first time since their high profile wedding. But despite many details of the ceremony being made public, amazingly the couple managed to keep their honeymoon destination a secret. Maybe they got help from the Secret Service? Possibilities for their honeymoon hideaway were a safari in South Africa, or a European bike tour. But judging by the lack of tan the pair were sporting, maybe they chose to just stay home for a couple of weeks.

Aww … they’re so cute. I just love seeing Chelsea Clinton look so happy. It really doesn’t seem like it’s been over a month since the pair were wed but I guess time really does fly when you’re having fun. I’m really glad to know that they newlyweds are still very much in lurve … and are, apparently, happy to share the lurve with the rest of the world. So cute!!

UK Rugby Player Gavin Henson Gets Naked For Charity

Gavin Henson, British rugby stud and newly separated fiancée of Charlotte Church, stripped down to his birthday suit in order to appear in a promo photo for Cosmopolitan magazine meant to raise funds and awareness for the Everyman Campaign. The Everyman Campaign is the UK’s leading prostate and testicular cancer campaign and chose well when they decided to get Henson to strip down for the cause … check out his husky and hot photo:

Having braved sub-zero temperatures for a new reality TV show, stripping off under warm studio lights was not exactly going to be a problem. But Gavin Henson wasn’t just showing off his toned and tanned physique as a treat for his female admirers. Instead he dared to bare all for a magazine shoot to raise awareness of male cancer for the Everyman charity. Gavin, 28, stripped off for a special photo shoot for next month’s issue of Cosmopolitan magazine. It was for the Everyman campaign to raise awareness about prostate and testicular cancer and encourage men to get themselves regular checked. His picture was inspired by his forthcoming reality TV show 71 Degrees North, which starts on ITV this Saturday. The programme will see Gavin compete against other celebrities including actor Shane Richie, TV presenters Andrew Castle and Konnie Huq and Ultimo bra boss Michelle Mone, to be the first to reach the northern-most point of Europe – latitude 71 degrees. Each week they will be given a ­daring task to complete while ­enduring the freezing wastes of ­Norway.

While this photo is meant to be a nod towards Henson‘s upcoming new show, I could honestly care less where the lad decides to strip down … and in what setting. In all seriousness, tho, testicular and prostate cancer is a very serious matter and anything that can be done to bring awareness to the disease is very important and very welcome. That being said, I’m just glad that Gavin Henson is contributing to the cause in as hot a way as possible. We don’t really have professional rugby here in the US so I hope y’all Brits don’t mind us yanks appreciating your crop of hunky men ;)

Rooney Mara Makes Herself At Home In Stockholm, Sweden

On Sunday we got our first look at Rooney Mara on the Stockholm set of the US version of The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo and today we get to see new photos of Rooney on the streets of Stockholm trying to draw as little attention to herself as possible. Rooney and a male friend were spotted doing a bit of shopping yesterday … behold:


As you can see, Rooney is wearing this knit cap in order to keep her edgy new haircut under wraps … but we already got to see what her new Dragon Tattoo ‘do looks like so the hat really isn’t necessary. It seems pretty clear that she’s none-too-happy that she has been found and is being photographed in Stockholm but considering how big a deal the US version of The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo is, well, she better get used to the attention. I know that many people are angry that a US version of the film is being made but I’m all for it. Not only do I trust that director David Fincher will make a fantastic film but US films will do NOTHING to take away from the fantastic original Swedish films. I’ve seen all 3 Swedish films and I love them entirely … no new film can take that away. But I am curious to see how the stories can be retold with new actors. I’m really looking forward to the release of the US films … and I’m really anxious to see more from the Swedish set of Dragon Tattoo.

Swatch Out

Let me tell you about my Labor Day … it was full of a whole lotta nothin’. Since David had returned from his quick trip to San Francisco on Saturday and I returned from Detroit on Sunday we were both happy to lie low all day yesterday. For the most part, we just lazed about the house reveling in the fact that it was a quiet holiday. I did manage to run one errand last night tho, just to get out of the house. While I was home in Detroit, I found a bunch of vintage Swatch watches that I had left in my bedroom in my childhood home:


Naturally, all of the batteries in these Swatch watches had died ages ago … so I took them to the Swatch store on Hollywood Blvd. to get all the batteries replaced. As you may recall, Swatch was doing free battery replacements a couple of weeks go but I was happy to pay to have my old watches refreshed with new batteries. Now I have a few more Swatches to wear :) Yep, that was the exciting highlight of my day yesterday.

I was home in time to watch some TV and was able to do a bit of reading … ’twas a nice, quiet day.

Tonight, David and I are meeting up with Darion for dinner before he and his father head off to Tokyo, Japan for 10 days. I can’t EVEN tell you how jealous I am of Darion’s trip … but I’m glad he and his dad are going. I’m counting on living vicariously thru him via his Twitter while he’s on holiday. I hope your shortened work week is off to a nice start … Happy Tuesday!

Jennifer Aniston Creepin’ Around With ‘Cougar Town’s Josh Hopkins

Well, well, well … what have we here? A couple of weeks ago we learned that Jennifer Aniston will be appearing in upcoming eps of her BFF Courtney Cox-Arquette‘s hit ABC series Cougar Town and today we learn that Jen is gettin’ some extra perks from her association with the show. People magazine is reporting that Jen went on a 2-hour date with Josh Hopkins, who plays hottie neighbor Grayson on Cougar Town, which might be the first sign of a new romantic relationship for the famously single Ms. Aniston:

Looks like Jennifer Aniston’s guest starring role on Cougar Town comes with some sweet fringe benefits. The actress, 40, (who was recently rumored to be back together with John Mayer) shared a two-hour Italian dinner with Cougar Town actor Josh Hopkins at Madeo in Beverly Hills on Sept. 2. “She seemed very excited about her date,” says a eyewitness. “She and Josh sat at a more private table and they seemed to get along great.” Aniston, who sipped white wine and ordered fish, shared animated conversations with Hopkins, 39. “It was obvious that they don’t know each other well, but there was a flirty energy between them and Jen looked very happy,” adds the witness. Reps for both haven’t commented on the relationship, but there’s no denying the smile on Aniston’s face these days. “Jen has been in the best mood lately,” a source tells PEOPLE. “She is trying to do whatever makes her happy, which includes going on fun dates with interesting men.” And the star’s optimistic attitude could lead to more fun in the dating world.

I LOVE Josh Hopkins on Cougar Town … and I really love the idea of a possible love match blossoming between Jen and Josh. He seems like the perfect guy for her … he’s in the biz so he understands the demands of her life but he’s also not all that famous so that she can enjoy some of his normalcy. Josh is also a hottie (much hotter than John Mayer, IMHO) so there is much for Jen to enjoy from him. Because of Jen‘s notorious singleness, I’m not holding my breath just yet … but I do like this pairing very much. Here’s hoping this 2-hour date turns into something more substantial and long-lasting.

Paris Hilton Found Hiding Out In A Grocery Store In Maui, HI

Paris Hilton, who has been charged with felony cocaine possession and has been banned from all Wynn Hotel properties in Las Vegas, NV after being arrested in Sin City a couple of weekends ago, popped up on the island of Maui, HI over the weekend. It would appear that Paris is hiding out in Hawaii (well, in a grocery store in Hawaii, to be exact) while she awaits prosecution for her drug possession charge … behold:

Paris Hilton has fled the harsh glare of her cocaine arrest in Las Vegas and gone to Hawaii, and RadarOnline.com has the details plus an exclusive photo of her shopping in a Maui grocery store. Liezel Bermudez, a cashier at Napili Market, a small grocery store on the Hawaiian island of Maui, spoke to RadarOnline.com exclusively about her encounter with the heiress late last week. Liezel said: “Paris was in the produce section. She was holding lemons. She was holding so many lemons, and other fruit that i can’t remember, that i went up to her and offered her a basket. She said ‘thank you,’ and she told me that her boyfriend had a wagon, but that she didn’t take the basket.” Paris spent $700 in the market and didn’t seem at all stressed out or bothered, Liezel said “No, not at all. She seemed really happy, she was smiling. I asked her for a picture and she was really nice,” Liezel adds. “She posed for a picture with me and my co-worker Jao. Not lots of customers recognized her. I was surprised!” … It appears that Paris and her boyfriend Cy Waits are staying in a private home on Maui because Saturday night, Paris tweeted “Cooked a delicious lasagna dinner for my love and watched a movie. Now going to bed. Sweet dreams everyone. Xo Paris.”

HMMM … I’m actually surprised that Paris is still with Cy Waits considering it was his drunk driving (and all that alleged marijuana smoke pouring out of his car) that got her arrested in the first place. As you may recall, Waits also got arrested and has been charged with DUI in addition to getting fired from his job at the Wynn Hotel. I guess this Maui trip is a great way for both Paris and Cy to fall off the radar for a while. It remains to be seen if the couple will be able to finagle their way out of these serious charges … but as they say, the couple that hangs together — swings together.

First Look: Betty White On ‘Community’

A couple of weeks ago we got our first look at Betty White in a new promo video for the upcoming season of Community to promote her guest appearance on the season premiere ep. Today we get our first look at Betty on the show in a couple of promo pics that have been released by NBC as well as some info on what role Betty will play on the show:

Sure, summer may be over but at least you can look forward to the return of all your favorite TV shows this fall — like NBC’s Community, which just released photos from its upcoming season premiere starring hot octogenerian Betty White! Judging by these new stills, the episode featuring White as kooky anthropology professor June Bauer is going to be pretty awesome. Especially considering Community stars Joel McHale and Chevy Chase will also be back for the new season.

While I understand that some folks are beginning to suffer a bit of Betty White fatigue (because the Golden Girl tends to pop up on every show), I am just loving every time Betty shows up on new projects. As I mentioned before, I don’t usually watch Community but I’m planning to check out the season 2 premiere ep later this month to see Betty in action. Jessica Simpson Remembers Her Late Dog Daisy Mae

A year ago this week we learned the terrible news that Jessica Simpson‘s beloved dog Daisy Mae got snatched away by coyotes right in front of her face. For a few days, Jessica futilely hoped that her tiny dog would be able to fend off a pack of coyotes and spent some time and energy to search for her pet pooch … but she eventually gave up and realized that Daisy Mae was gone. Yesterday, Jessica posted a tribute message for her beloved pet on her official Twitter profile:


Just a few days ago Jessica shared a cute and very happy photo with her new man Eric Johnson but yesterday Jess paused to remember the dog she lost a year ago. Now, I’m not a dog owner but I can appreciate Jessica‘s sentiment that if you do have a dog, you should give it extra love because you never know what tragedy might befall at any given time:

It’s Official: Danielle Staub Is Leaving ‘The Real Housewives Of New Jersey’

Last month Life & Style magazine broke the news that Danielle Staub, the most controversial castmember of the hit Bravo TV series The Real Housewives of New Jersey, had been fired from the show and would NOT be appearing in any future seasons of the show. Today we learn officially that Staub has, indeed, been fired from the show. Bravo aired part 2 of the reunion special for The Real Housewives of New Jersey, which was Danielle‘s final appearance on the show. On her way out, Danielle hugged and handshaked (handshook?) with her fellow RHONJ castmembers in an apparent show of friendship … which you can see from these photos:

Bravo is cleaning house. The network announced Monday that Danielle Staub, the firestarter on “The Real Housewives of New Jersey,” would not be returning to the show. Throughout the tumultuous second season, Staub enraged Caroline Manzo, her sister-in-law Jacqueline Laurita and family friend Teresa Giudice, though Staub seemed to make amends at the end of Monday’s reunion episode. “The reunion was Danielle’s last appearance on “The Real Housewives of New Jersey,” said Andy Cohen, Bravo’s senior vice president of original programming and development who also hosts “The Real Housewives” reunion shows. “We thought the hugs were a great way to end two seasons of bitterness between the women.” … While several women are moving on from the 4-year-old franchise, an entirely new group of “Real Housewives” in Beverly Hills are preparing for their close-up , debuting Oct. 14. Cohen promised a return to over-the-top opulence and a family dynamic similar to the New Jersey series with a pair sisters who happen to be connected to the Hilton family. The Beverly Hills cast includes: Adrienne Maloof, whose family owns the Palms Casino Resort in Las Vegas; Camille Grammer, ex-wife of “Frasier” star Kelsey Grammer; Lisa Vanderpump, a transplanted British restaurateur; Taylor Armstrong, wife of venture capitalist Russell Armstrong and Kim and Kyle Richards, former child stars and aunts of Paris Hilton. “There’s big, big, big drama and big, big, big tension,” said Cohen. “They all live near each other, and it’s amazing. You’ll see what it means to be someone’s neighbor in Beverly Hills. You have to walk a mile to get to your next door neighbor’s house. Adrienne and Lisa live across the street from each other. I’ve never seen wealth on that scale.” Bravo is constantly searching for new cast members, both in existing and potential locales, according to Cohen. That means interviewing and filming test footage of possible “Real Housewives” with their friends and families. Cohen said the network has attempted to wrangle a Texas edition for the past two years but “never hit it” with the right group of women.

And that, my dear friends, is that … no more Danielle. Personally, this decision to cut her out of the show makes no sense to me. The whole dynamic of RHONY is all the ladies vs. Danielle … without Danielle, what is left for the other castmembers to do? Do I really want to watch the bankrupt Theresa shop? Do I really want to watch Jacqueline fight with her bratty daughter Ashley? Do I really want to watch Caroline smother and baby her grown children? No, to all of those questions. It’s starting to feel like the Real Housewives franchise is losing it’s luster … not only is Danielle leaving RHONJ but Bethenny Frankel is leaving The Real Housewives of NYC, Lisa Wu Hartwell is leaving The Real Housewives of Atlanta and crazy Lynne Curtain is leaving The Real Housewives of Orange County. The franchise will debut The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills this Fall … further saturating reality TV with more old rich women dying to be famous. Meh. Danielle Staub may have been a bit loony but she was entertaining and truly made RHONJ worth watching … without her, I’m not sure it’s worth tuning in anymore.

First Listen: Rihanna, ‘Only Girl (In The World)’

This November, Rihanna will be releasing a new album reported to be titled Loud! and will be world premiering her new single Only Girl (In The World) tomorrow … but TODAY right here, right now we get to hear Only Girl IN FULL … until the powers that be yank the song offline. Read on for all the deets known about the single and Ri Ri‘s upcoming new album:

Rihanna’s next studio album ‘Loud’ will be released in November. The first single from the album, ‘Only Girl (In the World)’, is set to premiere online tomorrow (September 8). An exact release date for the album is yet to be confirmed. During a webchat on her official site, Rihannanow.com, the singer said of the album: “I didn’t want to go backward and remake [2008 album] ‘Good Girl Gone Bad’. I wanted the next step in the evolution of Rihanna.” She added: “I’m gonna miss the [2009 album] ‘Rated R’ era too, but NOTHING compares to the album I just made.”

I understand that Only Girl (In The World) was produced by Stargate, who previously produced her hit club bangin’ track Please Don’t Stop the Music. After the jump, listen to Rihanna‘s new single IN FULL …


My guess is that this track will get pulled offline very soon, so listen as many times as you can while you can. The track will officially debut tomorrow and then will very likely explode all over radio, all over the world. I’ve already listened to the track a couple of times and I really like it … what do y’all think? Is this another hit for Rihanna?

Wyclef Jean Performs A Song Titled ‘If I Was President’

Last month we learned that singer/songwriter Wyclef Jean will NOT be able to run for the office of president in the nation of Haiti due to his inability to satisfy the requirements needed by any person running for the office in Haiti. As a result of his exclusion from the race, Jean has decided to fight on in any way possible in order to be allowed to run for the office of Haitian president. Additionally, tho, over the weekend Wyclef Jean used his day job as a musical performer to try and show the world that he is worthy of the office of the Haitian presidency by signing about it. Unfortunately, Jean‘s attempt to sing his case has only proved without a shadow of a doubt that he is NOT worthy of the office of any presidency … read on to find out why:

Wyclef Jean has publicly called out actor Sean Penn and ex-Fugees bandmate Pras after they both spoke out against him during his run for the Haitian presidency this summer. The rapper seems to be fuming with Sean, but still has love for his old friend, Pras. He told Hot 97: “If I was president, I got a message for Sean Penn; maybe he hasn’t seen me in Haiti because he was too busy sniffing cocaine. I got a message for Pras as well, even though you don’t want to support me, I got love for you, even though you only kicked 8 bars for The Fugees.” Penn told CNN last month: “This is somebody who’s going to receive an enormous amount of support from the United States, and I have to say I’m very suspicious of it, simply because he, as an ambassador at large, has been virtually silent. For those of us in Haiti, he has been a non-presence.” Pras has come out in support of Michel Martelly, who announced his bid for the Presidency on Thursday. "I have no qualifications for president; I have qualifications for a leader," Pras told CBS "The reason why I even entertain this idea is education, job creation, agriculture, bringing security into the country." "He's (Martelly) more popular in Haiti than Wyclef."

I mean … yeah … if we needed any more proof that Wyclef Jean is not qualified to be president of anything, it would be THIS outrageous performance on stage at the Hot 97 On Da Reggae Tip concert. To publicly accuse Sean Penn of “sniffing cocaine” merely because he criticized Jean‘s qualifications as a presidential candidate just proves that Penn is absolutely right. Wyclef Jean isn’t qualified to be president of the PTA, let alone an entire nation. I’ve always contended that Wyclef Jean‘s heart was in the right place, that his love for his country was strong … now I’m not so sure. I cannot understand how a man who claims to know what is right in order to lead a nation he claims to love thinks it is OK to make such childish and outlandish accusations about his detractors. The man is a clown, plain and simple. Let him sing his silly songs to his heart’s content, leave the serious work of political leadership to other more qualified and mature people.
