Watch: Florence + The Machine, ‘Heavy In Your Arms’

Posted: 13 Sep 2010 02:48 PM PDT

Last night Florence Welch, better known professionally as Florence + the Machine, made her presence known on the 2010 MTV Video Music Awards by delivering one of the best performances of the night for her VMA nominated song Dog Days are Over (which won the award for Best Art Direction). In case you missed it or just want to watch it again, here is Florence + the Machine‘s LIVE VMA performance from last night:

In order to keep the momentum going from last night’s stellar performance, F+tM is giving us our first look at her new music video for her new single Heavy in your Arms which is featured on the official motion picture soundtrack for The Twilight Saga: Eclipse … behold:

Hauntingly beautiful and a bit scary, this new video for Heavy in your Arms is far more entertaining then the film it was written for … and is proof that Florence + the Machine is a new force to be reckoned with. I’ve been minorly obsessed with the F+tM album Lungs for a few weeks now so it’s nice to see that she is breaking out a bit and getting more notice. There are some artists that just ooze talent and Florence Welch is deffo one of those artists. If you like these tracks, check out some of her other stuff. I’m hoping to be able to see F+tM when she performs LIVE in concert this coming November. Any Flo fans out there? Rollcall!

Zac Efron Is Rockin’ His Brawny New Look

Posted: 13 Sep 2010 02:30 PM PDT

Yesterday we got our first look at Zac Efron‘s sparse tragically thin facial on the red carpet at the Deauville American Film Festival in France this weekend … today we get another look at Zac‘s chin pubes on the red carpet at a photocall in Madrid, Spain for his film Charlie St. Cloud. Curiously, Zac‘s outfit made it seem less like he was a film event and more like he was auditioning to be the new Brawny paper towel man:

Hee hee … even with the facial hair, Zac does not look brawny enough to be the Brawny man. OY! I am still not feelin’ the beard and ‘stache … maybe it still needs to, ahem, grow on me but one thing’s for sure … it DEFFO still needs to grow on him.

Kelis Does ‘Wonderland’ Magazine

Posted: 13 Sep 2010 02:14 PM PDT

Zac Efron may be on the cover of Wonderland magazine this month but the amazing Kelis is featured inside the mag … and she is lookin’ FIERCE in her Wonderland photospread. Here are just a few of her fabulous photos:

Heh. Considering how sparsely bare Zac‘s new facial hair is lookin’ these days, I’d have to say that Kelis‘s ‘stache in this first photo looks much better than his ;) But in all seriousness, Kelis looks great in these photos … they’re stylish and hip without being too over the top or forced. Kelis is my girl, I love her entirely. This is a great photospread. With Zac on the cover and Kelis inside, this issue of Wonderland is a deffo must have.

Madonna Moves Film Production Of ‘W.E.’ To NYC

Posted: 13 Sep 2010 02:06 PM PDT

Earlier this month we saw photos of Madonna on the London set of the film she is directing W.E. as she was giving instruction to her daughter Lourdes Maria, newly cast in the film. Today we get to see new photos of Madonna on the set of W.E., which has since moved production to NYC:

I mean … look at all that equipment. It’s kinda like Maddy knows that she’s in NYC and everyone will be watching her “direct” a movie so she wants to make it plainly clear that she is actually directing by using all of this director’s equipment. The only thing missing is the clapboard and the megaphone for her to yell, Action! I presume that Madonna will remain in NYC for the rest of production of W.E. It remains to be seen if she will cast any other of her children in the film as well ;) Do your thang, Maddy.

Nicki Minaj Does ‘Out’ Magazine

Posted: 13 Sep 2010 01:30 PM PDT

You may not know who rapper Nicki Minaj is just yet but you will … and soon. Nicki, sometimes referred to as the Lady Gaga of Rap, can be heard on quite a few very popular songs on the charts right now and will soon release her debut album. So, while we await the release of Minaj‘s album, let’s get to know the lady who is featured on the cover and in the pages of the new issue of Out magazine:

Kanye West even recently proclaimed that she may become the second-biggest rapper of all time, behind Eminem. Nicki Minaj, the 25-year-old music sensation, has already stolen the spotlight on songs with pop heavyweights Mariah Carey and Usher, all while playing hip-hop's most dangerous game: sexuality roulette. With snappy, bi-curious lyrics and out-of-this-world costume changes, Minaj is soaring in the most peculiar way. Does she have what it takes to change rap's homophobic landscape forever? Minaj has always embraced her female fans, and they have certainly embraced her back. "I started making it my business to say things that would empower women, like, 'Where my bad bitches at?' to let them know, 'I'm here for you,'" she says. "Then, when I started going to the shows and it was nothing but girls, it was like, Did I go too far with embracing my girls? Because now they want to kiss and hug me." Yet it was a comparison to Barbie that caused her to feel the heat. "It's interesting that people have more negative things to say about me saying 'I'm Barbie' than me saying 'I'm a bad bitch,'" she says, noting that the criticism inspired her. "Once I figure something is irritating people, I'm going to do it more because I like to get on your nerves until you realize how fucking stupid you are." This attitude is precisely what might help her quash the homophobia permeating the rap world. She even muses about hitting the road with her mentor, Lil Wayne. "Normally, Wayne probably wouldn't have gay guys coming to see his shows much, but they're definitely a big part of my movement, and I hope they'd still come out and see me," she says. "I think that will be really, really interesting, just to start bridging that gap. We'll see."

Nicki Minaj got my vote for Best New Artist at this year’s MTV Video Music Awards and while I was bummed that she didn’t win the award, I know that there are big things in store for her. I first heard about Nicki when she teamed up with Mariah Carey on Up Out My Face and have been DYING for the girl to release an album of her own. After the jump, check out some of the photos from Nicki‘s Out magazine photospread and see just how creative she can be with her look and style …

Love, Love, Love her! As I said before, Nicki can be heard on quite a few hot tracks out right now … here is a You Tube video that features some of her performances on those songs and music videos:

My View From The 2010 MTV Video Music Awards

Posted: 13 Sep 2010 12:57 PM PDT

Yesterday, on the always kind invitation of MTV, I was able to attend the 2010 MTV Video Music Awards. I’ve been very lucky to be able to attend the VMA for the past few years so I am always grateful for the opportunity. Sure, this year’s show didn’t have as much bang as last year’s show but, in all honesty, it’s a blast to be able to attend these shows in person. I worked the red carpet before the show got underway and was able to talk to a few of the VMA attendees … here are some of the photos I snapped yesterday:

I got to talk to the cast of the US version of Skins and shared with them how much I love the original British series … they promise me that the US version will be as gritty as the original and they seemed confident that fans of the original series will love their version. We shall see. I also got to talk with Alan Ritchson about his work on Blue Mountain State and as Aquaman on Smallville. He was such a sweetie, very funny and kind … he promises more fun from the second season of BMS, I cannot wait!! I also got to meet Dina Deena Nicole Cortese, the newest castmember on MTV‘s Jersey Shore. She was very sweet, still humble and promises is more fun to watch than Angelina Jolie Pivarnik (who was cut from the show for season 3). All in all, I had fun on the carpet and at the show itself. MTV is always so good to me … I have to send out lots of love and many thanks to Tamika for taking such great care of me this year. I tend to have really great experiences at the VMAs and I am always thankful to be invited to the party.

Tonight David and I have big plans to stay IN and relax. He is home from Vegas, our travels are finished for a while … it’ll be very nice to just decompress. Hope your Mondays are going well!!

The 2010 MTV Video Music Awards Are Handed Out

Posted: 13 Sep 2010 11:39 AM PDT

So … last night MTV threw its biggest party of the year, the 2010 MTV Video Music Awards … and despite attempts to hype up the possible drama that might’ve gone down on the show ended up giving us a fairly quiet and painfully drama-free awards show … much to many people’s chagrin. I was able to attend the show last night and from my perspective the show was OK but clearly lacking the excitement from VMA shows from days of yore. Here are a few photos from the red carpet arrivals last night:

Again, for me the carpet was kinda lackluster … kinda quiet. The Jersey Shore kids came out, some of the nominees did as well but really there wasn’t anything to get all excited about the entire time. I will say that Ciara looked the best on the carpet last night. Her dress was amazing … she was a vision just walking down the carpet. There weren’t too many fugly looks … but, as you might expect, the Jersey Shore kids brought way too much tan to the snow white carpet. After the jump, check out some photos from the show itself and find out what the Washington Post had to say about the 2010 MTV VMAs. I think you’ll find their sentiments echo the sentiments of many who watched last night …

At the 2010 MTV Video Music Awards, it was time to let bygones be bygones, and let insipid awards shows be insipid awards shows. Sunday's ceremony in Los Angeles offered a handful of trophies that felt less meaningful than ever, as viewers held their breath for a potential act of contrition from Kanye West. West, who infamously interrupted an acceptance speech by Taylor Swift at last year's VMAs, closed the program by unveiling a new song where he both chastised himself and saluted himself in one strange swoop — the latest gesture in a career defined by inner conflict. "You've been putting up with my [expletive] way too long," he rapped, before launching into the tune's puzzling refrain: "Let's have a toast for the [expletive]s." He continued, rattling off words unfit for this publication, but apparently no sweat for cable television. Swift premiered a new tune of her own earlier in the night, its lyrics clearly directed at the rapper, and none of them naughty. "Thirty-two is still growing up," the country-pop princess squeaked, wearing her most serious face. "Who you are is not what you did. You're still an innocent." So all is forgiven? Everybody cool? On to the awards, then! Lady Gaga led the award nominations with 13 and took home a record 8, including Video of the Year, Best Pop Video and Best Female Video. When she accepted the latter clad in an Alexander McQueen frock and a mohawk of feathers, it was hard to tell whether she was getting verklempt or just talks as funny as she dresses. Eminem took home the awards for Best Male Video and Best Hip-Hop Video, while 30 Seconds to Mars won for Best Rock Video. But who cares, really? The draw of the VMAs is the wacky frisson of having pop's A-list all squished into one auditorium and hoping they fight. Or make out. Or both. But there was little smooching or feuding on Sunday, despite some nudging from the host. "I want to encourage everyone to be on their worst behavior," comedian Chelsea Handler declared in her opening monologue, a string of flat punch lines that felt a few degrees below crass. Sample zinger: "It's time to acknowledge the big black elephant in the room. Where's Kanye?" Ugh.

For me, the problem the VMAs always has is that it constantly needs to outdo itself with wacky and crazy moments. Usually, those moments come with ease … but when a show fails to deliver those moments, like last night’s did, the whole thing feels flat. I personally thought Chelsea Handler did an OK job … and I’m not even a fan of hers. She did about as well as any host could’ve done … some of her jokes were corny but most awards show host jokes are corny. I’ll take her over Russell Brand any day of the week. I really think Taylor Swift made a misstep with her song and performance. While I doubt she was seriously trying to win sympathy for what Kanye did to her last year, her attempt to tell her side of the story in a mournful way just did not work … at all. I really was not impressed with Kanye West‘s performance … I get that he was trying to take back the moment and say “Hey, let’s toast the douchebags” but the song just sucked … it was a marginally good idea that didn’t pan out. The best performance of the night was Eminem’s … my fave moment was Cher’s suprise appearance.

Here are some photos of some of the celebs in the press room last night:

Click HERE to see the full list of VMA winners (which, after you look at it, seems awfully short). I had a good time at the show, absolutely, but was I wowed? No. I still have mad love for the MTV VMAs because there have been far too many great shows to not love it. BUT, I fear that a network that barely airs music videos anymore might be losing its touch on how to deliver solid shows year after year that successfully manage to make everyone happy. I guess we’ll have to wait and see what comes next.

Reese Witherspoon & Jim Toth Continue To Enjoy Domestic Bliss

Posted: 13 Sep 2010 11:11 AM PDT

A few months ago we saw photos of Reese Witherspoon and her boyfriend Jim Toth lookin’ as happy as can be here in SoCal. Today we get to see new photos of the pair lookin’ just as happy, just as in love and just as domestic as ever:

The thing I love most about these “boring” photos of Reese and Jim grocery shopping is that they are “boring” photos of Reese and Jim grocery shopping. You can tell that they are truly happy together because they’re just living their lives together as “boring” as can be. I think it says a lot that they are still going strong and still look thrilled to go grocery shopping together. I think Reese may have finally met the man of her dreams.

Gwen Stefani & Kingston James Get Their Nails Did

Posted: 13 Sep 2010 10:27 AM PDT

Gwen Stefani, who is currently in NYC to partake in all the New York Fashion Week festivities going on there, took her eldest son Kingston James McGregor out for a bit of pampering at May’s Nail Salon on 14th street in Manhattan. As you can see from the following photos, Kingston decided to get his nails did and walked out of the salon with all the fierceness possible from a 4 year old kid … behold:

I love this. Just like I see no problem with Angelina Jolie letting her daughter Shiloh Nouvel dress in “boys clothes”, I think it is perfectly fine for Gwen to let her little boy to wear nail polish. It is my contention that letting children express themselves will help foster more creativity from them and will allow them to be more free from the constraints of other people’s oppression. When I was very little, I had a lot of love for Wonder Woman … my babysitter gave me a fun Wonder Woman watch that I loved entirely:

I happily wore this watch every single day of my Summer vacation. I wore it to school once (3rd grade, I think) and was teased so much that I never wore it to school again. But, my mom told me there was nothing wrong with loving Wonder Woman and supported my love for the character (she let me get a WW beach towel [which I used as a blanket on my bed], toothbrush and a glow-in-the-dark light switch). I am always impressed by parents who have this kind of support for their children, especially when they are starting to realize who they are and are trying to express themselves. I’m glad Gwen (and Angelina, for that matter) are so supportive of thier young children. I really think their kids will be better people for the support.

Noomi Rapace Has Been Cast In ‘Sherlock Holmes 2’

Posted: 13 Sep 2010 09:34 AM PDT

Back in May we learned that Sherlock Holmes 2, the sequel to the Guy Ritchie-directed film that stars Robert Downey, Jr. and Jude Law as super sleuth Sherlock Holmes and his sidekick Dr. James Watson respectively, will be released in late 2011 … today, we learn that Noomi Rapace, the star of the original Swedish Girl with the Dragon Tattoo films (currently being remade for the US audience with Rooney Mara as the lead), has been cast as the female lead in SH2:

Noomi Rapace, the Swedish star of “The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo,” has booked her first English-language role: the plum part of the female lead in Warner Bros.’s “Sherlock Holmes 2.” The sequel reunites most of the team from the original: Robert Downey Jr. as Holmes and Jude Law as Dr. Watson. Guy Ritchie is back as director while Joel Silver, Susan Downey, Lionel Wigram and Dan Lin return as producers. The logline is being kept under wraps, although it is known Holmes will face off against Moriarty. Also making an appearance will be Holmes’ brother, Mycroft. Rapace’s role is shrouded in mystery although sources say the character may be a French Gypsy. It is unclear if the role is romantic in nature. Warners is looking to start production later this year.

Yay! This is fantastic news. I really enjoyed Sherlock Holmes and I am really anxious for the sequel. While it is widely presumed that Moriarty will be introduced in the sequel, rumor has it that Brad Pitt will be cast to play the iconic villain. I am really anxious for the US audience to get to know Noomi Rapace … I was so impressed with her work in all 3 Dragon Tattoo films that I know she will make a huge splash in the English-speaking film world. Learn her name now, Noomi Rapace … she is going to be big, y’all … just wait and see.

Cher Makes Her Return To The 2010 MTV Video Music Awards

Posted: 13 Sep 2010 08:44 AM PDT

The iconic Cher, a diva in her 60s, made a surprise appearance at the 2010 MTV Video Music Awards last night when she came out to present the last award of the night — Best Video. Cher stunned the crowd when she sauntered out in an outfit that was very reminiscent of the costume she wore in her 1989 music video If I Could Turn Back Time. When that video was released, it was considered so risqué that MTV would only air it after 11pm. These days, it looks very tame in comparison to the music videos that air thruout the day on various music television channels. Here are a couple photos of Cher at the VMAs last night:

She is 40 years older than most of last night’s attendees and hasn’t had a major hit since 1998, but Cher was the name on everybody’s lips at the MTV Video Music Awards. The singer stole the show in a barely-there outfit reminiscent of the costume made famous in her video for her 1989 song If I Could Turn Back Time. It was an updated version of the controversial jewelled outfit, complete with her trademark over-the-top curled hair and leather jacket. At 64, Cher’s choice to recreate the famous look was certainly brave. The see-through black body stocking left very little to the imagination, but the singer proved she still has an incredible body. She acknowledged the age difference between her and the audience when she arrived on stage to present Lady Gaga with the award for Video of the Year for Bad Romance. ‘I have shoes older than most of these nominees,’ she told a cheering audience. ‘I’m the oldest chick with the biggest hair in the littlest costume. ‘Back in the day, I used to get thrown off MTV for wearing things like this that seem so tame now,’ she added. ‘That’s when Lady Gaga was Baby Gaga.’

Each year the MTV VMAs provides a moment that everyone talks about the following day … this year, much like last year, I suspect the talk will be about Taylor Swift and Kanye West. As you may recall, Kanye interrupted Taylor‘s award speech last year and then caught hell for it. This year, both Taylor and Kanye sang about that moment last year … but neither one did very well or scored any points (tho, I suspect, Kanye came off looking better by comparison this year). For me, the big VMAs moment was Cher‘s surprise appearance. I think other moments include Lindsay Lohan‘s cameo (which we got to see earlier today), the performance by Florence + the Machine and Rihanna‘s surprise duet with Eminem to open the show. To be honest, this year’s VMAs seemed a bit more subdued … maybe even a bit lackluster. What did y’all think … what was YOUR fave moment of the night?

And, just to refresh your memories (or to clue in you young’ns who have never seen it before), here is Cher‘s 1989 all too risqué music video for If I Could Turn Back Time:

Diva. Bow down. Recognize.

Spencer Pratt Busted!

Posted: 13 Sep 2010 08:19 AM PDT

Spencer Pratt, the man that everyone loves to hate, got himself in a bit of trubs on a recent visit to Costa Rica … it turns out that he got arrested for illegal weapons possession as he tried to leave the country for the US. Of course, Spencer told everyone that he got arrested in Costa Rica … but no one believed it. TMZ had to go sniffing around to find out if the arrest actually took place and they determined that, yes, he was:

Every now and again, Spencer Pratt does actually tell the truth — turns out he really was arrested in Costa Rica yesterday. As we told you earlier, Pratt told us he was busted in Costa Rica for felony possession of a firearm on his way back to the U.S. yesterday. He was cited and released. Now, we’ve gotten our look at an arresting document from Costa Rica — and even though it’s in Spanish, it does have his name on it and includes fun words like “guilty,” “charged” and “prosecution” (thank you, Google Translate). Heidi’s name is in there to, listed as his spouse — and his occupation is listed as “actor.” That word must mean something different in Costa Rica.

I know, I know … there aren’t very many people out there who are at all interested in anything Speidi-related but … I cannot resist passing along news of a celebrity bust. While this post would be so much better with a bedraggled looking mugshot, I think this photo of Spencer snapped this weekend that looks even more bedraggled than many of the worst mugshots out there suits the purpose. I doubt Spencer will face any sort of punishment for this bust but the fact that no one on Earth barely gives to shits about what he does anymore is prolly punishment enough.

Lindsay Lohan Makes An Appearance At The 2010 MTV Video Music Awards

Posted: 13 Sep 2010 07:57 AM PDT

As rumors suggested, Lindsay Lohan did make an appearance at the 2010 MTV Video Music Awards … but she did so only in a pre-taped skit with host Chelsea Handler and did NOT appear on the show in person. To be honest, I think it was a much better/funnier idea for Lindsay to appear in the skit only as a tour of the limelight with all of that temptation might’ve been detrimental to her recovery. But, I digress. I actually thought Lindsay‘s little skit with Chelsea was kinda cute and funny. Here are a few screencaps and some deets about the skit:

As expected, MTV Video Music Awards host Chelsea Handler opened with a bang. In a pre-taped clip, the comedienne makes her way to the stage (and gets slapped on the butt a couple of times along the way). She meets up with troubled actress Lindsay Lohan, who pokes fun at her own struggles with sobriety before giving Handler a bit of advice: “Don’t embarrass me.” It went over pretty well, as did Handler’s monologue.

I understand a few people were not happy with Chelsea‘s hosting job last night … especially The New York Times:

And then there was the awkward plight of the night's host, Chelsea Handler. She was among the worst in the show's history — purposefully out-of-touch, with brief, alarming flashes of off-color racial humor. On her talk show, "Chelsea Lately," in a smaller setting, her interviews with musicians, rappers in particular, are consistently hilarious and inappropriate. Here, she never looked comfortable, undone by nerves, brittle material and the wattage of those around her.

Yikes! I didn’t think she was that bad but I can see their perspective. To be honest, I thought Chelsea was a much better host than Russell Brand was for the past 2 years. But, I’m getting off topic. Lindsay decided to poke fun at her personal trubs and inject herself into the VMAs and, IMHO, she did a pretty decent job. After the jump, check out the opening skit that featured VMAs host Chelsea Handler and her new BFF Lindsay Lohan

It’s a cute little cameo … could’ve been better but also could’ve been WAY worse. Might this be the start of Lindsay Lohan‘s professional comeback … well, I wouldn’t go quite that far but … at least it is a start of … something. What did y’all think of this skit and the VMAs overall last night?
