Obama Supporters Slanging Barack’s Birth Certificate For $100 A Pop For The Non-Believers Posted: 28 Jan 2011 05:48 AM PST This is interesting: Moving to dispel claims that President Barack Obama was not born in Hawaii, his supporters in the state’s legislature have introduced a bill that would allow anyone to get a copy of his birth records for a $100 fee. The idea behind the measure is to end skepticism over Obama’s birthplace while raising a little money for a government with a projected budget deficit exceeding $800 million over the next two years. “If it passes, it will calm the birthers down,” said the bill’s primary sponsor, Rep. Rida Cabanilla. “All these people are still doubting it because they don’t want the birth certificate from Obama. They want it from our state office.” The bill introduced this week would change a privacy law barring the release of birth records unless the requester is someone with a tangible interest, such as a close family member. It was introduced by five Democrats but has not yet been scheduled for a public hearing, a required step before it can move forward. A decision on considering the bill will be made by the House’s Democratic leadership and committee chairmen. So-called “birthers” claim there’s no proof Obama was born in the United States, and he is therefore ineligible to be president. Many of the skeptics question whether he was actually born in Kenya, his father’s home country. The Obama campaign issued a certification of live birth in 2008, an official document from the state showing the president’s Aug. 4, 1961, birth date, his birth city and name, and his parents’ names and races. Hawaii’s former health director also has said she verified Obama’s original records. And notices were published in two local newspapers within days of his birth at a Honolulu hospital. Democratic Gov. Neil Abercrombie, who was a friend of Obama’s parents and knew him as a child, said last month he wanted to release more of the state’s birth information about Obama. But he ended the effort last week when the state attorney general told him that privacy laws bar disclosure of an individual’s birth documentation without the person’s consent. The new legislation to release records may run into similar legal problems because of Hawaii’s strong constitutional privacy protections, said Rep. John Mizuno, a co-sponsor of the bill. “If people really want to confirm Barack Obama is born in Hawaii, that’s fine,” Mizuno said. “I don’t have a problem with looking at innovative ways to bring revenue to the state. The taxpayers deserve a break.” The $100 fee would help offset the extra work by state employees who handle frequent phone calls and e-mails from people who believe Obama was born elsewhere, Cabanilla said. But the number of birther requests has been declining from the 10 to 20 weekly inquiries received early last year, according to the Department of Health. “Requests have decreased significantly over the years. Currently we receive anywhere from zero to five per week,” said department spokeswoman Janice Okubo. The Health Department is still reviewing the bill, Okubo said. House Health Committee Chairman Ryan Yamane didn’t immediately return messages seeking comment on whether he would hold a hearing on the bill. Via NYTimes

A man has been arrested for allegedly keeping his wife locked for eight years in the dark, dank cellar of their home in southeastern Brazil, police said Thursday. Joao Batista Groppo, 64, was arrested after his wife of 40 years, Sebastiana, was found confined in a “filthy, dark” cellar, said police inspector Jaqueline Barcelos Coutinho. Groppo’s girlfriend, Maria Furquim, was arrested as an accomplice by police in Sorocaba, about 50 miles (80 kilometers) west of Sao Paulo, the inspector said. Initially, Groppo told police that he had locked his spouse up for 16 years. He later revised the time period to eight years, which their son confirmed, Coutinho said in a telephone interview. The son told her he knew what his father was doing but was unable to persuade him to stop, Coutinho said, adding that the son “may face charges of failing to come to the aid of someone in need.” She declined to identify him. Groppo, who described himself as a retired industrial consultant, said he locked up his 64-year-old wife beginning in 2003 because she is mentally ill and aggressive, the inspector said. “He told us that locking her up was the only way he could think of to prevent her from wandering off and getting lost,” Coutinho said. “She does have psychiatric problems but she is definitely not an aggressive person.” Coutinho added that Groppo claimed he took his wife to visit a psychiatrist once a month. Police were tipped off to the situation by an anonymous telephone call and arrested Groppo on Wednesday, the inspector said. Her own son didn’t look out??? Poor lady. Source

Posted: 28 Jan 2011 05:03 AM PST Just because folks in Egypt may not EAT ham doesn’t mean they won’t GO ham… About a half-hour past midnight Friday morning in Egypt, the Internet went dead. Almost simultaneously, the handful of companies that pipe the Internet into and out of Egypt went dark as protesters were gearing up for a fresh round of demonstrations calling for the end of President Hosni Mubarak’s nearly 30-year rule, experts said. Egypt has apparently done what many technologists thought was unthinkable for any country with a major Internet economy: It unplugged itself entirely from the Internet to try and silence dissent. Experts say it’s unlikely that what’s happened in Egypt could happen in the United States because the U.S. has numerous Internet providers and ways of connecting to the Internet. Coordinating a simultaneous shutdown would be a massive undertaking. “It can’t happen here,” said Jim Cowie, the chief technology officer and a co-founder of Renesys, a network security firm in Manchester, N.H., that studies Internet disruptions. “How many people would you have to call to shut down the U.S. Internet? Hundreds, thousands maybe? We have enough Internet here that we can have our own Internet. If you cut it off, that leads to a philosophical question: Who got cut off from the Internet, us or the rest of the world?” As crazy as this sounds Egypt isn’t the first country to shut down their internet or at least have it censored China has long restricted what its people can see online and received renewed scrutiny for the practice when Internet search leader Google Inc. proclaimed a year ago that it would stop censoring its search results in China. In 2009, Iran disrupted Internet service to try to curb protests over disputed elections. And two years before that, Burma’s Internet was crippled when military leaders apparently took the drastic step of physically disconnecting primary communications links in major cities, a tactic that was foiled by activists armed with cell phones and satellite links. SMH: 5th-Grade Girl Kicked Out Of Class Because Her Hair Was “Too Wild” Posted: 28 Jan 2011 05:01 AM PST Wow. SMH at them putting her in the “Special” class because of her hair! School administrators in Edenton say 10 year old Jakyra Kearse’s red and blue mohawk was too distracting to other students. On Wednesday, the 10 year old arrived to school sporting the new hairdo. That morning she was taken out of her regular 5th grade class and put in a smaller room so that other students could focus. “I went into the small group room and that’s for bad people because I was a distraction to everybody,” said Kearse. “There was a lot of laughter as I understand it at the time, numerous distractions of what was going on,” said Allan Smith superintendent of Edenton-Chowan Schools. Her mother, Ruby, is a former hairdresser who gave her daughter the look. She says her daughter has worn dyed hair before without any problems. 5th grader said she was inspired to get the look by pop star Willow Smith. “Sometimes I be thinking of Willow Smith and her video and I wanna be like that sometimes” Ms. Kearse told 13News Thursday morning that her daughter is back in her regular classroom today with the same hairstyle. She said that school officials said that students just need time to adjust. She said she doesn’t understand why the school didn’t just do that in the first place and she’s frustrated at what happened Wednesday. Kearse is not facing any disciplinary action. She has been allowed back into her regular classroom. School officials say other students are adjusting from their initial reaction and the hair is becoming less of a distraction. All she was trying to do was be like little Willow Smith…whatever happened to schools embracing creativity?? Source
