SMH:

Are they or aren’t they? Comedienne Chelsea Handler and maybe-beau 50 Cent didn’t do anything to clear up relationship rumors as they partied together at Backstage Bar & Grill in Culver City, Calif., during a recent birthday celebration for one of Handler’s friends.

Hmmmm…..

Gregory Isaacs reggae legend cancer

Another great talent’s life cut down way too soon.

Reggae legend Gregory Isaacs has died after a battle with cancer.

Isaacs, who was 59 years old, died on Monday morning at his home in London where he spent part of his time.

He leaves behind a wife and children.

Close friends told BBC Caribbean that he had originally been diagnosed with cancer of the liver which had then spread.

The Jamaican reggae singer, who was nicknamed the Cool Ruler, was best known for the song ‘Night Nurse’.

Gregory Isaacs’s first album came out in 1975. The last was released in 2008. In addition to “Night Nurse” being a basement party staple, his song “If I Don’t Have You” was immortalized in Hip-Hop by Mos Def’s “Ms. Fat Booty.”

Sh*t Is Real In Mexico, pt. 2: 13 Gunned Down At Tijuana Rehab Center

Posted: 25 Oct 2010 05:13 AM PDT

Tijuana Mexico Drug War

And this wasn’t a random act. The victims were handpicked

Gunmen burst into a drug rehabilitation center in eastern Tijuana Sunday night and shot 13 men, according to authorities on the scene.

The incident occurred at about 8:30 p.m. in the neighborhood of Buenos Aires Sur. Residents of El Camino a la Recuperacion said that the victims were lined up and executed in a common area of the center.

[A] witness, who asked to be identified only by his first name, Jesus, for fear of reprisals, said he was attending a movie showing on the first floor of the center, and had stepped out for something to eat when the attacked occurred late Sunday.

When he returned, his fellow clients told him the attackers made the addicts lie on the floor, and then sprayed them with bullets. Other clients sleeping upstairs in the center also survived. There are normally about 45 clients at the center.

The attack on the ramshackle, privately run center is the first such mass killing at a rehab center in Tijuana, a city praised by some for its anti-gang efforts.

But this isn’t the first time the wrong side of the “war on drugs” in Mexico has used this tactic.

While police have not identified the motive in the Tijuana slayings, drug gangs have attacked such centers before to target rival gang members.

In Ciudad Juarez, prosecutors’ spokesman Arturo Sandoval said three municipal police officers were found shot to death outside their patrol vehicle on Sunday.

And in the southern Pacific coast state of Guerrero on Sunday, state police found the bound, executed bodies of six men on a highway outside the resort city of Acapulco.

The men had been blindfolded, their hands and feet bound, and shot to death with assault rifles, the state Public Safety Department reported.

The killers left three handwritten messages with bodies, a tactic frequently employed by Mexico’s drug gangs to threaten their rivals or authorities, but police routinely do not reveal the contents of such messages.

Nationwide, more than 28,000 people have been killed in drug gang violence since December 2006, when President Felipe Calderon deployed soldiers to battle the cartels in their strongholds in northern Mexico and along the Pacific coast.

And even when one-time is around and involved, innocent folks aren’t guaranteed their safety.

While the government says most of the dead were involved in the drug trade, innocent bystanders have also died, like three people killed in the crossfire of a shootout between gunmen, police and soldiers in northern Coahuila state Sunday.

The victims were a 14-year-old boy and two women aged 18 and 47, according to a statement by the state prosecutors’ office.

The statement said gunmen traveling in two vehicles opened fire on a convoy of federal police officers and soldiers in the city of Saltillo, Coahuila. The officers and soldiers returned fire.

It was not clear who fired the shots that killed the bystanders, but the state attorney general’s office said it was investigating and expressed condolences to the victims’ families.

“They are civilians who unfortunately died in the exchange of gunfire,” it said, describing a running series of confrontations between police and assailants who allegedly fired shots into the air to clear bystanders from their path at one point.

Yeezy And His Ginormous Piece Crash The Party, Do A Couple Songs [Video]

Posted: 24 Oct 2010 11:59 AM PDT

Kanye West CMJ Pitchfork Runaway

After monopolizing MTV, BET, the internet and twitter with the hubbub about “Runaway,” Yeezy took his attention whoring to Brooklyn.

Maybe his “secret appearance” at Pitchfork’s #Offline show during the CMJ conference was planned… Maybe having Sway spoil the surprise was an accidental publicity stunt. But the fans came out in droves, and Kanye delivered a pretty dope show for $10.

In a festival the size of CMJ, with so many people involved, inevitably someone will spill the beans, or at least make a conjecture, which quickly spreads to rumor, which more often than not in these cases, proves true.

If nothing else, the cluster of people hovering outside Brooklyn Bowl late on Saturday night was its own confirmation: Kanye West was on the way. That it was actually the Pitchfork-sponsored #Offline festival he was planning on making a last-minute, late-night appearance at didn't much matter. Mr. West is bigger than #Offline, bigger than CMJ, and of course, bigger than whomever he shares the stage with.

In this case, it was CyHi Da Prynce, who was performing as part of a mini-showcase by the label Fool's Gold, which is run by A-Trak and Nick Catchdubs, in celebration of its third anniversary. CyHi Da Prynce is affiliated with Mr. West's label, G.O.O.D. Music, but the more important connection here is A-Trak, who was Mr. West's tour DJ for several years. The connection was enough to draw Mr. West out to Williamsburg on a Saturday night when certainly other, more glamorous things were happening elsewhere.

He emerged during "So Appalled," which also features CyHi Da Prynce, though that wasn't relevant the moment Mr. West came out on stage in a black jacket, his plus-sized gold Horus chain hovering heavily underneath. At the end, CyHi took his leave, and Mr. West delivered his part from "Monster," his recent Internet-leak-turned-hit, followed by "Devil In A New Dress." After conferring with A-Trak, he played two more, "Power" and "Runaway," happily bumping fists with audience members who were probably trying to avoid getting poked by his pyramid ring during their benediction.

This string of songs was from the series he's been releasing online every Friday, some of which will end up on his forthcoming album "My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy" (Roc-A-Fella/Def Jam). They're all impressive, but with its jubilant chorus of "Let's have a toast for the" (unprintable-word-for-a-bad-person) / "Let's have a toast for the" (another-unprintable-word-for-a-bad-person), "Runaway" captures Mr. West's moment neatly. He's a party spoiler, sure, but one who no one minds seeing.

Haitian Cholera Epidemic Spreads To Port-Au-Prince, Death Toll Close To 200 [Photos]

Hopital St. Nicolas St. Marc Haiti Cholera epidemic 2010

The first cholera epidemic to hit Haiti in decades has officially hit the country’s capital, making it just that more dangerous than it was when first reported.

This due to five individuals who left the rural Artibonite region where the disease was first reported to get better help in Port-au-Prince, where many foreign relief workers still remain.

An outbreak of cholera has spread from a rural valley in central Haiti to the nation’s capital, intensifying worries the disease would spread in squalid tarp camps that house hundreds of thousands of earthquake survivors.

The death toll from the epidemic topped 200 Saturday and fears of it propagating in the crowded, earthquake-ravaged Port-au-Prince increased after five cases were detected in the city.

U.N. officials stressed that the five cases, the first confirmed in the capital since the epidemic started, were people who had become infected in the main outbreak zone of Artibonite north of Port-au-Prince and had subsequently traveled to the city where they fell sick.

“They were very quickly diagnosed and isolated,” U.N. humanitarian spokeswoman Imogen Wall told Reuters, citing information from Haitian health authorities. “This is not a new location of infection.”
But prevention measures and surveillance were being increased in Port-au-Prince, with its squalid sprawling slums and about 1.3 million survivors of the Jan. 12 earthquake packed into tent and tarpaulin camps. All are highly vulnerable to a virulent diarrhea disease like cholera.

Health officials are fearful about the outbreak spreading into the capital, where thousands and thousands of people are living in unsanitary conditions in refugee camps.

“It will be very, very dangerous,” said Claude Surena, president of the Haitian Medical Association. “Port-au-Prince already has more than 2.4 million people, and the way they are living is dangerous enough already.”
