Hugh Grant is angry he turned down a role that could win Colin Firth an Oscar

I am a fan of Hugh Grant. To be more specific, I am a fan of Hugh Grant's work with Richard Curtis, and in About A Boy, and on the Bridget Jones movies, where I think Hugh is probably playing a version of himself. I think Hugh should just stick to those kinds of well-written romantic comedies, just because he's very good when something is well-written and funny. He's not very good when the writing is bad, or when it's not a comedy. But, within narrow parameters, Hugh is pretty awesome. I own many of those DVDs, and I've listened to the commentaries on a few of them. Love, Actually is a favorite DVD commentary, just because it's as funny as the movie. Hugh is sitting around with Richard Curtis and a few of the other cast members, and whenever Colin Firth comes on-screen, Hugh trash-talks him.

So I had always thought the Firth-Grant "feud" was just something silly and fun, a way to promote the Bridget Jones movies. But it might be real! Oh, happy day. The Telegraph reports that Hugh was offered the role of King George VI in the soon-to-be released film, The King's Speech. When Hugh passed, they went to Colin Firth, and it now looks like Colin will be in strong contention for the Best Actor Oscar for his portrait of the stuttering, decent, humble king who led his nation during World War II. And Hugh is pissed!

Colin Firth’s role in The King’s Speech may win him an Oscar, but it is unlikely to improve his antagonistic relationship with Hugh Grant.

Grant, 50, who played the rival of Firth, also 50, in the Bridget Jones films, is understood to have turned down the role of George VI, but now bitterly regrets his decision.

“Hugh is kicking himself,” claims an associate. “He realises that the king’s struggle to overcome his speech impediment would have been a wonderful part, particularly as viewers would have recalled Hugh’s stuttering in Four Weddings and a Funeral.”

The actor’s last film was the romantic “comedy” Did You Hear About the Morgans?

“Watching his performance, you realise that Grant has already given up on acting,” one critic remarked.

Is this interesting gossip? It is, it really is. But I don't think it's true. I just can't see how Hugh would have been anyone's first choice to play King George - he's not that strong a dramatic actor, and beyond that, Colin Firth looks more like King George, and Colin's career is in a much better place right now. I think this may be crap, but it's still fun. Plus, from what I've read about Hugh, he turns down almost everything because he hates working so much. So it's possible he got the script at some point and passed on it without realizing that he wasn't really the first choice, maybe?

Jennifer Love Hewitt goes public with her new boyfriend

Just last week, Kaiser wrote that she was shocked that Jennifer Love Hewitt had been with her new boyfriend, an actor/director named Alex Beh, all of three months and hadn’t granted an interview about it yet. This is Love Hewitt’s second boyfriend after her high profile split with Jamie Kennedy. She also dated Jenny McCarthy’s ex husband, John Asher, after he had a guest stint on Ghost Whisperer. It looks like Kaiser was right again, because J.Love got Beh to participate in a half marathon with her, during which she had the chance to talk about their relationship. Of course.

UsMagazine.com first reported in July that Jennifer Love Hewitt was dating actor/director Alex Beh — and on Sunday, the two made their first public appearance together, participating in the Dodge Rock ‘n’ Roll Los Angeles Half Marathon.

“We're crazy!” she joked to Us when asked why they decided to do the race together. “We are really excited about all the charities involved, and we heard the Rock ‘n’ Roll marathon was really fun and just sort of silly and a great way to stay in shape.”

Hewitt, 31, told Us she met Beh “through friends at a dinner party” after splitting with her Ghost Whisperer costar Jamie Kennedy.

What first attracted him? “Her eyes, her beauty,” Beh told Us.

“My running ability!” Hewitt then joked, prompting Beh to add, “Yes, her running ability! It was her eyes, and really, we just laugh the whole time.”

Added Hewitt, “We laugh a lot … he’s hilarious!”

Beh told Us that he has even read her relationship advice book, The Day I Shot Cupid, which Hewitt told Us she wrote because, “Everybody has been writing about my dating life forever. I decided it was time that I actually gave my own opinions on love and dating and all that stuff.”

Beh’s critique? “It's very informative. I learned all I needed to know. When I first met her, I really was able to just map out all the things to do and not to do.”

Love Hewitt is like Jessica Simpson, but not quite as… dumb. I hate to put it that way, but it’s hard to find another way to describe her. She’s kind of clueless when it comes to what she should tell the press about her relationships, though, and she’s had her moments of oversharing. Still, her relationships last relatively long and she doesn’t have a lot else going on so I can see why she would bring her new boyfriend to an event. She’ll never quite get the fact that it’s better for her to try and keep her business personal. I might be wrong though. She wrote a whole book about dating and managed to squeeze a lot of press out of it.

Mel Gibson thinks “everybody deserves a second chance”

So Mel Gibson briefly had a "comeback role" in The Hangover 2. Then people complained (like the actors and the crew), and Mel was fired and instantly replaced with Liam Neeson, an actor and celebrity who has probably never uttered the words "glum c-nt". The story is over, correct? The world is basically telling Mel to crawl back into his hole and be quiet for a while. But no, Mel won't do that. Mel's people publicly reacted to his firing, and they sound so pathetic:

Mel Gibson is furious at producers of “The Hangover Part II” for booting him from the flick, sources say. Gibson’s minor role as a Bangkok tattoo artist was seen as a comeback for his tattered career, but producers were quick to cut him loose when cast members objected to working with him.

A source close to Gibson told us, “He doesn’t understand why Mike Tyson, a drug user who turned his life around, was given a chance while Mel was kicked to the curb. Everybody deserves a second chance.”

Alan Nierob, who represents Gibson and Liam Neeson, issued a statement hinting at resentment over the firing. Nierob said Neeson will replace Gibson in the part, “pending clearance of cast and crew background check,” he quipped. Gibson is embroiled in a legal battle with ex- girlfriend Oksana Grigorieva, who alleges he assaulted and threatened her.

"Everybody deserves a second chance.” Does Mel think this Oksana situation just counts as "one bad thing"? And that it's his first? Remember Sugartits? Remember "The Jews are responsible for all the wars"? Remember Mel's tequila-soaked drive down the Pacific Coast Highway? Or does that not count because he's the King of Malibu, or whatever? And then the Oksana tapes… and the beating he gave her, and all of the racism and sexism and violent threats. So what "chance" are we on now? Fifth? Ninth? Twentieth?

Now, I'm not saying Mike Tyson didn't do some sh-t too. He did, and he's gross and disgusting as well and I’m not defending him. But Tyson did put in the time and effort to redeem himself and change his image. Tyson didn't attempt a "comeback" two seconds after all the bad sh-t went down.

Ryan Gosling is brooding, dark & artsy on Interview Mag

I keep waiting for Interview Magazine to release their interview with Ryan Gosling for the November issue, but it hasn't happened. We do have a couple of photos from the shoot though - and they are dark and lovely, although light on the close-up Teen Beat shots that I love so much, especially with a hottie like Gosling. Here are the other shots from Interview:

In addition to those, we have lots of new photos of Gosling in LA, mostly from the set of Drive, which he is filming with Christina Hendricks and Carey Mulligan. Considering Carey has just recently broken up with Shia LaBeouf (probably), I'm beginning to wonder if there is something between Carey and Ryan. They are both allegedly single. They are working together quite closely, and both have histories of romancing costars. And I kind of think they are each other's type. What do you think? Is it on?

Gerard Butler’s touch-of-grey hair: lovely, erotic or cheesy?

These are gorgeous photos of Gerard Butler from last week that we just got access to. In some, Gerard is with Hugh Jackman for an event the Global Poverty Project. In other photos, Gerard is hanging out with his buddy Hillary Swank at a screening of Conviction. Can I just say? I love the length of Gerard's hair right now. It's extremely sexy, and the way it has just a little curl to it, and the hint of grey… Jesus, I want to run my fingers through it as I wrap my legs around him. Too much? Gerard is Forever. Hugh's not bad either.

Sigh… I could look at photos of Gerard all day. I want to talk about his leather jacket. I want to talk about his moobs! He looks so good here. He looks fit and healthy and wonderful. How has he not gotten me pregnant by now?!?

Anyway, since Gerard has been all over the place lately, after a long, hot, Butler-less summer. He's been staying in NYC, going to events, and of course, bangin' all the ladies he wants. He's been connected to several in the past week - one was an attractive brunette (his type) that he was photographed with at the Poverty event, although a source tells NYDN that "it was just makeup artist Jeannia Robinette, a longtime friend of Butler’s who has been linked to him in the past. While the pair stayed by each other’s side all night, Robinette didn’t stop Butler from flirting with other girls." There was also a rumor about Gerard and some model… a report I can't find anymore. Oh, well. I'm sure Gerard can't remember her name either. Let's just look at pretty pictures of my Scottish love.

Jane Lynch on her nearly 20 years of sobriety and how she proposed to her girlfriend

Glee’s Jane Lynch, 50, is the cover girl for More Magazine. I haven’t heard much about More Magazine and I guess it’s a women’s magazine targeted at 40-somethings. They have some useful intelligent articles and I spent a lot of time on their website. Anyway Lynch gave a pretty candid interview to More, in which she talked about her 19 years of sobriety and about the moment she realized her now-wife was “the one.” I really admire her and find her so interesting. Lynch is a lot shyer in interviews than you might expect and when I heard her on NPR’s Fresh Air about a year ago I was surprised by how soft spoken she was. She said she didn’t like being the center of attention and that “I just want to be like everybody else.” It looks like she’s more comfortable now with her role as a superstar, as evident in this interview and the sexy photo spread. Here’s more:

Almost missing out on playing Sue Sylvester: True to her workaholic form, Lynch was already committed to two other series (Starz's Party Down and an ABC project) when the Glee offer arrived. This meant that for the first four episodes of Glee, Lynch's status was temporary. "We were keeping our fingers crossed that I got to stay."

On how she met her wife: Lynch met her wife, Lara Embry, last year at a lesbian rights fundraiser. A week after meeting, Lynch flew to Sarasota, Florida, where Embry lived. Just before takeoff, Lynch called Embry and said, "We need to acknowledge how courageous both of us are that I'm coming into town and you really don't know me. And I'm hopping on a plane to visit someone I really don't know. So for a moment, let's give ourselves a little pat on the back."

On getting hitched: After six months of dating, Embry proposed to Lynch. On May 31, the two women exchanged matching wedding rings in a small ceremony. "I shouldn't say this, but I'd never dated anyone that I wanted to marry. I didn't think it was going to be out there for me. But the minute we were married, I felt the difference: I felt like I am no longer alone." Lynch says she loves being able to realize two wishes many mothers have for their daughters: "I got married—and I married a doctor!"

On becoming a stepmother: Lynch's wife has an eight-year-old daughter. When asked, 'What's it like to become a parental figure for the first time in midlife?' Lynch replies, "I haven't really done it [on a day-to-day basis] yet. I took her to school. I picked her up. I went to lunch with her. So I kind of had a test run. We're pretty darn good together."

About being "a little OCD": Lynch is currently renovating her home to make room for Embry and her daughter. Until they move in together, the actress is confronting what she feels is a holdover from single life—her obsession with tidiness. "I'm a little OCD," admits Lynch who says she stares longingly at the dozen or so boxes of Embry's belongings that have been shipped and fantasizes about paring down. "I don't want to start going through them and saying, 'Well, we can get rid of this, and that!' But it's hard."

On deciding to become sober in 1991: "I was hungover all the time." One evening she told a friend, "I'm pouring out this glass of wine and never drinking again." She kept her promise. "Relatively speaking, my personal bottom was rather benign." Lynch says she used to stand up at 12-step meetings and apologetically say, "Had I known I'd be telling my story over and over again, I would have made it a lot better."

On turning 50: "I like the equanimity that comes with my age. I don't have big highs, and I don't have big lows. Even if this job goes away tomorrow, the nonstop ambition is a thing of the past for me. I've mellowed."

I admire people who are able to quit drinking and not take another drink for decades. I have a couple of relatives who are like that and they’re very matter-of-fact and low key about it. It sounds like Lynch is the same.

I’m up to date with Glee now and am really looking forward to seeing the Rocky Horror Glee show tomorrow night! The Duets episode, the last one that aired a couple of weeks ago, was very well done as it focused on the characters and their relationships. We didn’t see much from Lynch and I hate that we haven’t seen more of Coach Beiste, Lynch’s character Sue Sylvester’s new enemy. Hopefully we’ll see more of both in the upcoming episode.

Joan Collins won’t apologize for saying Jennifer Aniston isn’t beautiful

A few weeks ago, Joan Collins gave an interview to The Daily Mail in which she was bemoaning the state of glamour and beauty in the current crop of Hollywood. Joan seemed to take a decided position in the Uncool Bermuda Triangle War, siding on Team Jolie. Joan said: "When I was young, everybody on screen was gorgeous. I have to say, there aren't that many good looking actresses around today. I mean, there's Angelina Jolie and there's… Angelina Jolie. Jennifer Aniston is cute, but I wouldn't call her beautiful. She's no Ava [Gardner] or Lana [Turner]." She also had some nice things to say about Cheryl Cole, if that matters. In response, Jennifer Aniston's people issued a blanket statement saying that they were “aware” of Joan's comments, but that "There is no need to engage with that nonsense." Because nothing says "not engaging" like issuing a statement saying you are "not engaging." You know? And when HuffPo reported that "not engaging" story, it literally got more than a 1,700 comments. Ridiculous.

Anyway, Joan was Saturday's Carousel of Hope event, and Us Weekly caught up with her and asked about her comments. Joan's reply is pretty great - she doesn't pretend to take it back or anything, she just says that she bitched about some other actresses too, but The Mail just made it about The Uncool Bermuda Triangle:

Former Dynasty star Joan Collins is explaining why she dissed Jennifer Aniston. In Britain’s Daily Mail, she recently sniped that Angelina Jolie is more “beautiful” than Aniston, 41. Aniston’s rep said the Switch star was “aware” of Collins’ comments but felt there was “no need to engage with that nonsense.”

Collins, 77, tells UsMagazine.com she didn’t mean to offend the actress.

“The bottom line is that I talked about several actresses, among them Catherine Zeta-Jones, Scarlett Johansson and Megan Fox,” she told Us Saturday at the Carousel Of Hope Gala in Beverly Hills. “Unfortunately, everybody got cut out [except Aniston and Jolie]. Typical. That’s the way it goes.”

I would love to hear Joan's opinions on Megan Fox! That would be a hoot. I would imagine she adores Catherine Zeta, because Zeta is quite glamorous most of the time. Anyway, whatever. Joan isn't going to apologize. Should she have to?

17 year-old Gossip Girl Taylor Momsen also has a side gig as the lead singer in a successful hard rock band called The Pretty Reckless. Taylor has been making headlines lately for her raccoon makeup and outrageous trashy outfits as well as quotes she’s been giving about how she loves her vibrator, likes watching sex tapes and enjoys setting fire to stuff. She’s young and thinks she’s groundbreaking when all she’s doing is creating a hard-to-shake reputation of what a twit she is at 17. In her latest stunt, Taylor flashed her boobs at the crowd while performing with her band in New York on Thursday night. She only did it for a moment and she was wearing pasties, which shows that she meant to do that in yet another misguided attempt at being “hardcore.” Britney and Lindsay had similar intentions when they flashed their hairless ho-has to the paps. At least Taylor hasn’t gone that far yet. Here’s Hollywood Life’s report:

It could have been much worse, but I was paying attention when Britney was showing everyone her babymaker in the fall of 2007. This is minor potatoes compared to a sex tape or a vag flash. Then again, this girl is underage. Let’s hope that Taylor comes to her senses before she goes any further, although the likelihood of that seems slim given all we’ve seen from her so far.

Kat Von D demands ‘all traces’ of Jesse James be yanked from her show

We’ve heard conflicting stories as to whether Kat Von D and Jesse James are still on. US Weekly reported in their feel-good piece on Sandra Bullock’s vacation that Kat and Jesse were still dating, and that Kat was “just friends” with the other men she’s been spotted out with, like Bam Margera and her ex, Nikki Sixx. People Magazine also has a new piece about how Kat and Jesse were spotted out in LA over the weekend sharing an enchilada and looking very couple-y. Jesse recently shut down his West Coast Choppers customizing shop in Long Beach, CA, although TMZ reports that his other business there, Cisco Burger, is doing well and will continue to operate. Jesse of course moved to Austin, Texas, to concentrate on his business there and make sure that ~~he haunts Sandra Bullock forever~~ Sandra can see his kids.

TMZ has several stories that claim that tattoo artist Kat is back with Nikki Sixx and has deep sixed her relationship with Jesse. She supposedly demanded that scenes in which she trash talked Sixx be cut from her reality show, LA Ink, and that scenes where she’s shown going out with Jesse similarly be cut. That’s got to be expensive for producers to re-edit and reshoot to try and keep up with her love life.

More drama behind the scenes at “L.A. Ink” — where sources tell us Kat Von D went nuclear over the way her ex-boyfriend Jesse James was portrayed in an upcoming episode.

Multiple sources tell us the recent drama began in the last few days … after Kat viewed screeners of some upcoming episodes which spotlight her relationships with Jesse and her on-again BF Nikki Sixx.

We’re told Kat — who was dating Jesse when the show was being taped — has decided that she no longer wants any traces of him on the TLC show … and demanded that producers pull him from all future episodes.

Now, producers are desperately trying to rip Jesse from the show — but we’re told there’s so much content to remove … they’re worried they may to pack the show with extra commercials to fill out the time before the show airs Wednesday night.

Kat Von D just went nuclear on the producers of her reality show “L.A. Ink” — threatening a legal war over several scenes that feature Kat trash-talking her on-again boyfriend Nikki Sixx.

Sources close to the production tell us … Kat went ballistic on producers earlier this week when she viewed screeners for upcoming episodes of “Ink” which air on TLC starting Wednesday night … which contained several scenes featuring Kat going off about her then ex-boyfriend Nikki Sixx.

Here’s the problem — the footage was shot a while ago, while Kat was dating Jesse James … and back then, she still harbored some ill-feelings toward Nikki.

But now, Kat and Nikki are back together — and when Kat previewed the footage from the upcoming episodes, which contained the anti-Nikki smack talk, we’re told Kat “freaked out.”

We’re told Kat demanded producers re-edit the show ASAP — removing all negative Nikki references and killing a storyline involving a “Nikki vs. Jesse” theme … or else she would file legal papers in an attempt to stop the show dead in its tracks.

In the end — we’re told producers begrudgingly obliged and Kat’s comments will never see the light of day.

I’m getting the impression that if she keeps this up she won’t have a reality show for much longer. The market is crowded and there’s plenty of competition. Kat has a new book out, The Tattoo Chronicles, and is about to go on a two month book tour. She’s been tweeting a lot back and forth with Nikki Sixx, which makes it look like she’s at least still “friends” with the guy. It’s likely that Kat and Jesse are off-again and that someone in Sandra’s camp wants to make it seem like they’re still together. Or maybe Kat is willing to sleep with Jesse occasionally in exchange for the publicity.

Angelina & Brad find something that amuses Empress Zahara

Empress Zahara has found something that struck her fancy. Take notes, minions. Brad and Angelina took the Empress and little Pax out on the town over the weekend - they're still in Budapest, and I guess Angelina had a short break in her directing schedule. So Brad and Angelina took Pax and Zahara to Lukacs Thermal Bath - I believe they're coming out of the thermal bath in these photos. Zahara looks highly amused! She also looks like she's working some angle with her mom, like she's trying to charm a trip to McDonalds out of mama. Fame Pictures does note that the four Jolie-Pitts did go to McDonalds, and I personally think it was the Empress's initiative (hustle) that got everybody some chicken nuggets. Did you take that down? Empress Zahara approves of thermal baths and chicken nuggets and/or French fries.

Meanwhile, Pax looked upset and/or mid-tantrum coming out of the thermal baths. CB pointed out that Pax probably didn't want to leave, and that it was probably like an awesome heated pool for the kids to play in. So, Pax = tantrums? Who knows? Also: is his stuffed animal Curious George? That's very cute.
