Interview: Ned Ehrbar's 'Co-op Of The Damned'

Posted: 23 Oct 2010 09:34 AM PDT

At Crushable, we’re big fans of all things horror. Which makes October a pretty fun month. But more often than we’d like, horror films and videos accidentally tend toward comical. That’s why we were excited to see our friend Ned Ehrbar’s intentionally comical series Co-op of The Damned online this month. The videos, which are being released every Monday throughout the month of October, follow a group of apartment dwellers who refuse to move, even though they live with roommates from Hell.

We caught up with Ned to talk about the series. (And make sure to check back in on Monday, when we’ll have the final episode for your viewing enjoyment.)

Have you had particularly traumatic roommate situations?
Actually, I’ve had great roommate experiences, so I hope none of my former roommates see the series and think I secretly wanted to kill them or anything. If anything, I’m probably the one that’s tough to live with.

Where did you come up with the idea for Co-op of the Damned?
It actually started as a short story that I wrote for a fiction issue of a magazine that never ended up getting published, and the story was more detailed version of the first episode. I just loved the idea of how much New Yorkers were willing to put up with for a nice apartment.

How does the co-op you’re filming at feel about the series?
Actually, the building owners have no idea about us. We film in an apartment in West Hollywood that is generously donated to us by its occupant (who shall remain nameless), and there are some very understanding neighbors in the surrounding apartments. Our crew and equipment is pretty small, so we don’t take up a lot of space, but there does tend to be a lot of screaming during production. But we didn’t get any complaints while filming.

What are your favorite scary movies?
My tastes run from Rosemary’s Baby and The Exorcist to Halloween and Drag Me to Hell, which was amazing. I’m not a huge fan of the more gore-intensive slasher films or stuff like Saw. But I grew up with the Nightmare on Elm Street movies, so I’ll always have a soft spot for Freddy Krueger.

Why do you think scary movies are so comical sometimes?
Well, there are two types: There are the scary movies that throw in comical scenes, and I think that’s to cut tension or catch the audience off-guard. Then there are the horror movies that are unintentionally hilarious because their effects are crappy or they’re taking themselves way too seriously. We’re more interested in those, because they’re easy to make fun of.

What are your favorite comical horror movies (intentional or not)?
There’s a great (if horribly cheesy) horror spoof called Student Bodies that came out in 1981 and flopped horribly. It was totally ahead of its time, doing what the Scary Movie films did decades before. It’s pretty ridiculous and goes off the rails at the end, but it’s a lot of fun and was kind of a guiding light for us going into making Co-op.

What should we look forward to on Monday?
Monday’s episode gets a little more violent than the others, and it’s also where the bulk of our makeup and prosthetics budget went. We’re hoping it closes out the first four episodes with the appropriate bang.

Did you have any funny happenings since you started filming?
Here’s my favorite story from set: We were trying to save money anywhere we could during production. The very first scene we shot was from Episode 2, when the maniac stabs the chicken in the kitchen (since that was the only scene in the kitchen). Well, once we filmed that, using two chickens, we promptly cleaned them, butchered them and threw them on the grill, and the props turned into lunch for the cast and crew. Then we saved two cooked pieces and used them for the dinner scene later in the same episode. I think we got our money’s worth with those chickens.

Video: Tim Gunn's Gossip Girl Cameo

Posted: 23 Oct 2010 08:52 AM PDT

Tim Gunn had some gossip to share about Taylor Momsen after he filmed his segment for The CW’s Gossip Girl last month. But he made it work when it came time to film.

According to Tim, Taylor couldn’t be bothered to learn her lines and held up filming all day. Gunn’s episode airs this week and it appears that Taylor couldn’t be bothered to use any emotion while delivering her lines either. Celebuzz has a clip of Tim Gunn’s cameo, where he interviews little Jenny Humphrey about her clothing line and experiences with the Waldorf family.

Momsen’s responses make Jenny seem like an erratic, hungover spoiled brat. Which actually, is about accurate for the character.

Celeb Tweetup: 'Lindsay In Jail' Is Back!

Posted: 22 Oct 2010 03:03 PM PDT

We hate to be excited that anyone has to spend time behind bars but come on…this is Lindsay Lohan we’re talking about here. Even her parents are happy just to have her out of the house and off their hands for a bit. And for some silver lining on this cloud, guess who’s back?! Faux-Lindsay Twitter account, plus some tweeters we haven’t heard from in awhile!

Either Greyson Chance (@greysonchance) was finally allowed to watch Glee, or the tyke is branching out from Lady Gaga.

For a second we weren’t sure which was the pretty Japanese girl Jared Leto (@jaredleto) was talking about in this pic.

Mariah Carey (@MariahCarey) is giving up on Halloween? Oh noes! Is it our fault?

Crushable Commenter Of The Week: Carolyn Defends Learning Over Ivy League Diplomas

Posted: 22 Oct 2010 02:48 PM PDT

My post this week about my experience getting into Columbia University (How I Snuck Into The Ivy League. And You Can Too.) has sparked quite a debate in our comments section. Some people don’t believe a degree from General Studies counts as an actual degree from Columbia. One commenter even said it wasn’t the “same degree other people going to the REAL Columbia will get.” In fact, General Studies is an undergraduate college at the REAL Columbia, which places students in the same REAL classes with the same REAL teachers. Reader fromthesource defended the school and directed doubters to The School of General studies website as proof.

But amid all the talk of degrees and pedigrees, I liked this response from reader Carolyn best:

Crushable Quotable: Businessmen Used To Speak Jive With Jay-Z

Posted: 22 Oct 2010 02:10 PM PDT

Jay-Z is one of the most successful businessmen in the world. In addition to having the most number one albums for a solo artist, he has made bank through partnerships with big brands from Coca-Cola to Budweiser, Reebok and Microsoft. But when he started working in business, Hova ran into some hiccups with white-collar entrepreneurs.

In a profile of the rapper today, The Wall Street Journal notes that businessmen initially tried to speak to him in Ebonics:

“In the beginning it was ‘ ‘Sup, man!’ ” he says in his soft speaking voice. “But at this point, it’s pretty much accepted that I walk both worlds naturally.”

And because we’ve feeling nostalgic for Barbara Billingsley since her death last week, here is the woman known best for playing June Cleaver’s famous jive talking scene from Airplane:
