Golden Globes Executives Say: ‘Ricky Gervais Need To Go Sit His Azz Down Somewhere!’ Posted: 18 Jan 2011 06:18 AM PST Seems the folks that run the Golden Globes are none to happy with this years host, comedian Ricky Gervais. Ol’ boy was taking shots at people and cracked a few jokes that were definitely in poor taste. Add Hollywood Foreign Press Association president Philip Berk to the chorus of those who believe that Ricky Gervais went too far as host of the Golden Globes on Sunday night. The head of the group responsible for the awards show says that while he felt the show itself was “terrific,” he too felt that Gervais’ jokes about specific celebrities were too much. “He definitely crossed the line,” Berk told The Hollywood Reporter. “And some of the things were totally unacceptable. But that’s Ricky.” “Any of the references to individuals is certainly not something the Hollywood Foreign Press condones,” he added. Robert Downey Jr. – the butt of one of Gervais’ jokes – said the show was “hugely mean-spirited with mildly sinister undertones.” Gervais went after Berk personally with this joke when introducing him saying, “I just had to help him off the toilet and pop his teeth in.” While Berk traditionally vets every word of the Globes’ script, he says that Gervais does not allow that pre-show scrutiny as host. “That’s not how Ricky works,” he said. Sounds like the Foreign Press let dude chump them off if you ask us. How do you book a host that won’t adhere to the rules of YOUR award show!? Shoulda fired him once he started talkin’ that “this is how I do it” sh*t, word to Montell Jordan. Source

These White Folks Are Getting Way Too Beside Themselves: Surf Shop In OC Has A Sale On “All Black Products” On MLK Day Posted: 18 Jan 2011 05:32 AM PST They can’t be f*cking serious: Sure, we’ve all seen stores and restaurants play up holiday sales for the sakes of their bottom lines. But there are times when someone with a decent head on their shoulders should speak up and call a bad idea a “bad idea.” For instance, when the country is celebrating the birthday of, arguably, the most influential civil-rights activist, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., boasting a sale with “20% Off All Black Products” is about as bad an idea as bad ideas go. When MLK made the statement “I have a dream,” the following is probably the furthest thing from what he had in mind for equality among all people. Putting the head of Dr. King on the body of a surfer wearing a wetsuit to promote a MLK Day sale is worthy of a giggle. People like a well-Photoshopped gag. But the rest is pretty damn inexcusable. The culprit? Thalia Surf Shop in Laguna Beach. It appeared on the website. Certainly a great shop, with plenty of cool events and gatherings–we recognized it as Best Surf Shop in OC in 2009–but this was not the wisest ad campaign. As the individual who alerted the Weekly to the ad said, “This is not acceptable. It’s not funny, amusing nor respectable.” WTF??? And we bet these simple mfers thought this sh*t was a “gnarly” idea. R.I.P.: Miracle 9/11 Survivor Josephine Harris Dies At Home Posted: 18 Jan 2011 05:19 AM PST Just shy of ten years after miraculously surviving the collapse of 1 World Trade Center on September 11, Josephine Harris was found dead in her Brooklyn home last week. The story of her improbable rescue by New York City firefighters was among the most enduring to emanate from the horror of Sept. 11, 2001. It was told and retold: how a weary woman, Josephine Harris, was coaxed and carried to safety by six men from Ladder Company 6 in Chinatown who had rushed to the World Trade Center that morning. It was a feat of timing, engineering and plain luck that when the rush of wind and noise came and the north tower fell away, the firefighters and Ms. Harris were not crushed in a sea of concrete, dust and steel as they were spread along the stairwell between the fourth and first floors. Rather, the building fell around them. As Deputy Chief John A. Jonas explained, unlike the south tower, which leaned and toppled over, "ours peeled away like a banana." "And we were the banana," he added. "We were at the bottom." It was so happy a story that the only disagreement seemed to arise over who had saved whom. Had the firefighters, led by Chief Jonas — he was then a captain — survived because they paused to help Ms. Harris, a bookkeeper for the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, as they rushed to leave the north tower? Or had Ms. Harris, whose legs were weakened by fatigue, been lucky enough to live because of them? Chief Jonas spoke on Saturday. On Wednesday, members of the Fire Department — this time, the Emergency Medical Service — again rushed to help Ms. Harris, after being summoned to her apartment on Bushwick Avenue in Brooklyn by a 911 call at 2:20 a.m. Ms. Harris, 69, was unconscious when they arrived, and they had to force open the door. "They did CPR, and worked on her for some time," a Fire Department official said. But she was pronounced dead, apparently after a heart attack. News of Ms. Harris's death arrived at Ladder 6 by a telephone call from her sister, Thelma Johnson. "I kind of had the same feeling as if a relative had died," Chief Jonas said. "Right away you start thinking about all the things you'd gone through. It was a cloak of sadness, and it is still there. With the 10-year anniversary coming up, it's going to be a little different without her." "You cannot say that something that happened to you is a miracle," Chief Jonas said. "But we had the courage to do what we did, and you can say that if she was not there for us to save her, we probably would not have made it." "We had a very unique, shared experience that not many people on this earth can say they've had," he added. "We survived that terrible day together, and we felt close to her and tried to include her in as many things as we could." We hope Ms. Harris spent the last ten years of her life surrounded by family that cherished the extra time she was given. Source

True Or False: Is NeNe Leakes Ready To Leave ‘Real Housewives Of Atlanta’?? Posted: 18 Jan 2011 04:35 AM PST NeNe Leakes has emerged as the messiest of Bravo’s Atlanta ‘Housewives.’ But apparently, NeNe is through with sharing the spotlight with Dwight and those other five b*tches on the show. In a recent interview, NeNe hinted that she might not be back on the next season of the show, which has transformed her from a local ‘socialite,’ and we use that word lightly, to a national magazine cover girl and TV star. They just finished shooting the reunion special last Wednesday and NeNe’s finally able to talk about being on Season 4 of “The Celebrity Apprentice.” But when it comes to the next season of the Bravo reality series, NeNe dropped a bomb on us. “I’m not really interested in joining the next season,” NeNe tells Zap2it. “I’m just not really interested right now.” Bam! She said that just as our conversation came to a close. So, other than saying her desire to leave the series has nothing to do with her feud with cast mate, Kim Zolciak, she was unable to tell us why she doesn’t feel like returning for another season. Maybe… “The Celebrity Apprentice” awakened her entrepreneurial spirit? NeNe told us she wants to focus on being an independent woman: She’s currently working on a shoe line, a handbag line, her local Atlanta talk segment and a desire to go behind-the-scenes producing radio and TV shows. Yeah right! It probably means someone offered NeNe her own show. Who would fill NeNe’s shoes as RHOA’s star if she were gone? Source

Tragic Irony: Housing Projects Named After MLK Show Sharp Increases In Violence Posted: 18 Jan 2011 04:17 AM PST What do you get when you cross Dr. Martin Luther King with Malcom X? A street you can’t walk down. Only a day after celebrating the vision and accomplishments of Dr. Martin Luther King, a new study has been released showing that peace is hard to come by on streets named after the icon. Martin Luther King Jr. Houses on Malcolm X Blvd in NY is just one of many housing developments that have seen significant crime increases over the past year. Violence in city housing developments spiked last year, led by a sharp increase in Bronx murders and Harlem shootings, statistics show. Residents were not surprised. “You can’t avoid it,” Bronx resident Maria Rojas-Garcia, 61, said of the violence. “We got everything here. Just last summer a young man was shot in front of our building. “There is no peace.” Rojas-Garcia lives with her 83-year-old mother in the Edenwald Houses, the Bronx’s biggest housing project and one with a persistent gang problem. The Edenwald Houses is one of 14 developments covered by police officers assigned to Police Service Area 8, a division of the NYPD’s Housing Bureau in the east and north Bronx. Police did not have statistical breakdowns by housing development, but the numbers show that PSA 8 investigated 14 murders last year, up from two in 2009. There were 37 shootings at those houses, compared with 14 in 2009. Edenwald residents said they don’t need numbers to tell their story. Be careful, they say, or be ready. “People are animals here,” said Jason Miller, 17, an admitted member of the Inwood Jungle Kids. “They hurt each other for no reason. You have to hang with the right crew. “We’re the top crew so nobody messes with us.” Police said the increase follows a year of sharp decreases. “Nonetheless, any murder or shooting is one too many,” said top NYPD spokesman Paul Browne. “We address crime spikes experienced in public housing with housing impact deployments, sometimes coordinated with precinct and transit impact teams, among many other strategies.” Shaquin Cameron, 20, has her own strategy – she moved out and is majoring in sociology at SUNY Albany. Her friend, Ta’Neyah Frazier, 19, would love to follow suit. “I want to leave here too.” she said. “It’s all I’ve known. I wonder what life is like, life outside here.” Such an option is less likely for Daniel Lewis, who has lived in Harlem’s Martin Luther King Jr. Houses for all but one of his 57 years. The development is just a few blocks from the north end of Central Park, but his surroundings are anything but pastoral. Busted door locks invite troublemakers, gunshots are fairly common and kids can’t play in the courtyard without fear. “It’s getting worse,” he said. Police statistics show 54 people were shot at Manhattan projects last year, compared with 37 in 2009. The sharpest increase occurred on the grounds of the developments in Harlem, East Harlem and Spanish Harlem, with shooting victims rising from 21 in 2009 to 40 last year. “I don’t even let my kids go to the window – and I live on the 12th floor,” said Christina Andrades, 34, a stay-at-home mother of three. “The bullets fly around here.” It looks like the only thing these people have a dream about is bussin’ a cap in your azz.
