Is Black Friday A Sham Or The Real Deal?!??

Posted: 25 Nov 2010 01:23 AM PST

Walmart-Black-Friday-Deals-Header

The day after Thanksgiving is considered to be the biggest shopping day of the year, aside from the day after Christmas. Black Friday is when consumers think they are getting the best deal but in reality is it all a sham???

According to CNNMoney.com, consumers should read the fine print and not just the price. All though companies have good intentions for consumers to rack up on tons of deals that doesn’t mean you’re getting top dollar for a lower price…

Here are a few tips to help you make the right decisions come Black Friday:

Black Friday bargain hunters beware. There’s a good chance you won’t score that doorbuster deal you’ve set your heart on.

Retail experts say the annual hype and hoopla that surrounds Black Friday also masks some nasty surprises.

The most painful: The crushed hopes of hundreds of midnight shoppers, who camped outside for hours in the cold hoping to score a 40-inch LCD HDTV for under $500, only to later learn that the store had four in stock.

That’s one harsh — but all too common — example of a Black Friday reality that shoppers need to know about before they map out their shopping warplan, said Edgar Dworsky, consumer advocate and editor of Consumer World.

That’s one harsh — but all too common — example of a Black Friday reality that shoppers need to know about before they map out their shopping warplan, said Edgar Dworsky, consumer advocate and editor of Consumer World.

But there are many more. Here’s a sampling of Black Friday secrets that CNNMoney.com has flagged for deal hunters:

Limited supplies: Read the fine print on the Black Friday circulars.

Most doorbuster deals — especially those on big-ticket items like HDTVs and washer-dryer combos — are in very limited supplies, often only four to six units per store.

So unless you are among the first six on line before stores open on Black Friday for those deals, you’re pretty much out of luck.

Retailers use these juicy deals to entice shoppers into their store, that’s when the switcheroo happens. Even if you didn’t score the bargain you wanted, sellers hope that since you are already there, you’ll probably grab some other deals instead.

HDTV deals. Is it the standard model, or a ‘derivative?’ Some of the holiday electronics with those low sale prices are products with fewer features than a standard model in that product line.

The difference can be subtle and most consumers probably won’t even notice, said Dworsky.

Dworsky points out a Samsung 40-inch LCD HDTV for under $500 that has appeared as a doorbuster deal on several retailers’ Black Friday circular.

“That model doesn’t appear on Samsung’s web site. Maybe it was made just for Black Friday,” he said. Another red flag, the deal on that TV just lists the deal price and not the regular price of the model.

The lesson for shoppers: Do your own research and check the specifications on those discounted HDTVs.

A Samsung spokesperson was not immediately available to comment for this story.

Avoid bad bling. Jewelry is always a sought-after deal on Black Friday. But experts say consumers should keep some tips in mind before buying their bling this year.

Because of surging gold commodity prices, jewelry manufacturers are paying much more for the precious metal than last year. So one way that jewelers are keeping their own costs, and retail prices down reasonable for consumers, is by selling more gold-plated or gold-filled jewelry.

Many advertised deals on gold jewelry will use phrased such as “gold-filled” or “gold-overlay.” This is not the same as solid gold, said Kevin Adkins, a graduate gemologist.

“When you see those terms, know that you’re buying silver with a plate of gold coating over it,” said Adkins.

If the price is too good to be true on that diamond set, then it probably is. “I saw an online deal for a 1-carat diamond cocktail ring for $431.40. A 1-carat ring sells at least for $1,000,” he said.

His advice: Ask about the four C’s — cut, clarity, carat and color — before buying diamond jewelry and always check return and refund policies on Black Friday deals.

Which Black Friday deals are online? Many retailers will say that their Black Friday in-store deals are available online but they won’t tell you which ones, said Dworsky.

“So do I run out and stand on line all night or gamble on the computer all night?” said Dworsky.

The other annoyance with retailers’ Black Friday online deals, he said, is that many sellers don’t tell you what time the web deals kick in. “Is it just before midnight, at midnight or at the same time that the stores open?” he said.

Don’t assume a “price match” policy. Many retailers who typically follow a price-match policy during the year may drop it for the Black Friday shopping weekend.

Again, carefully read fine print on the Black Friday circulars to see which retailers will match the lowest prices on an identical product and which sellers explicitly say the policy will not be in effect.

Black Friday… Is It Really Full of Sh*zzzz??? What are your thoughts???

Where Is Music Headed???: Rihanna Has Nine #1s, Kanye West Is Possibly Peaking At 500K For 1st Week And Nicki Minaj Is On His Heels

Rihanna, Kanye West, Nicki Minaj

The first word that comes to a lot of minds when they think of music today is… GARBAGE!!! But then, you have artist like Kanye West, Nicki Minaj and Rihanna who have all seem to pump some type of life back into the 808s.

According to Billboard, Rihanna has set the record for having the most Number Ones in this Millineum. She had a total of 4 #1′s drop this year with two going back to back, “Only Girl In The World” and “What’s My Name?” When the album “Rated R” was release, we all could have sworn after Rihanna’s punching bag fiasco, her career wasn’t looking to bright with a track like “Russian Roulette” but then she hit back with “Rude Boy” and everyone forgot about the song of death. Rihanna’s new album “LOUD” was released last week selling 200k units so, far.

Now on to Kanye West… Mr. West has been releasing ‘FREE’ music for the past two months and everyone has been eating it up. Even with him releasing dayyumm near 10 tracks, only about 3 free songs ended up being on the album, which left people wanting more. Kanye is predicted to sell about 500K in his first week but we think it will be a little bit more. Maybe not seeing how he just went off on Bush, Matt Lauer and Taylor Swift… AGAIN!!!

Then there is Nicki Minaj… her CD dropped on Monday and is flowing right behind Mr. West. Having Diddy in her corner might have been the best thing she could have done besides hooking up with Lil Wayne. Nicki also teamed up with Mac for an exclusive lipstick that will be dropping on Black Friday. Wonder if these extras day actually helped with album sales… for her sake we hope so but other than that, we haven’t heard too much about how her album is doing besides being #3 on iTunes.

Despite serving a 18-month prison bid, patiently waiting for his opportunity to play in the NFL, and subsequently embarrassing teams all season long, Michael Vick is still on his road to redemption.

This week he was in New Haven, Connecticut and spoke to high school students from Hillhouse and Wilbur Cross High Schools about his involvement in dogfighting and gave encouragement to the kids.

“You guys are going to be our future leaders in this world,” Vick said at Cross, according to the New Haven Register. “Set your mind on what you want to do moving forward. And each and every day, you have to think about what’s the best thing that I can do to become a better person tomorrow. There’s going to be some ups and downs, but it’s all about how you bounce back from it; it’s all about how you persevere.”

Some Thanksgiving Chocolate: Chad OchoCinco Goes Butt A** Naked For PETA

Chad “OchoCinco” Johnson is one of those people that will do just about anything to keep his name floating on the tip of every woman’s tongue. So, it’s no surprise that he would strip all the way down for PETA and it’s “Ink, Not Mink” Campaign. Displaying his smooth chocolate skin and full monty… PETA is proud to present “A Butt Naked Chad OchoCinco!!!”

Chad Ochocinco Chooses Ink, Not Mink

Chad, an avid animal lover, posed nude for PETA's iconic 'Ink, Not Mink' campaign to protest the cruel fur industry and prove that he'd rather go naked than wear fur.

Chad explained to PETA, "To tell you the truth, when I was younger growing up, I thought it was all fake―they didn't really kill animals." So when he found out how animals are brutally killed for their skins, he really wanted to become a part of this campaign. Animals killed for their fur endure tremendous pain and suffering before being turned into coats, hats or used as fur trim. Foxes, minks, rabbits even dogs and cats are bludgeoned, stomped, electrocuted, and gassed to death. PETA undercover investigations reveal that many are skinned alive. The only way to prevent such unimaginable cruelty is never to buy or wear any fur or fur trim, and by encouraging others to do the same.

Is Nicki Squashing ALL Of The Competition, Or Could Ke$ha Be A Problem???

Posted: 24 Nov 2010 04:18 PM PST

Nicki Minaj Ebony Title Page

Ebony Magazine did a six page spread on woman of the week Nicki Minaj that includes Derek Blanks photos of the rapper as a 50-foot-woman, towering over her surroundings. It’s a fitting metaphor, but not all the critics have been so kind to Nick.

The New York Times ran a critical review today comparing Minaj to Ke$ha and we’re guessing some people are not going to be too happy about it. Check out a few excerpts below:

At this time last year Nicki Minaj had established herself as the most important new female voice in hip-hop since Missy Elliott and was on her way to becoming one of the most ubiquitous artists in pop, thanks to a series of scene-stealing collaborations, high on character, technique and energy. For more than a year now, she has been a rejoinder to an endless stream of lovermen, narcissists, tough guys and lyrical monsters, besting them all, from Trey Songz to Kanye West.

So it's odd that upon the release of her proper debut album, "Pink Friday" (Young Money/Cash Money/Universal), she has been bested in some ways by Kesha, who at this time last year was just beginning to figure out how to rap. Kesha released "Cannibal" (Kemosabe/RCA) this week, an EP that continues her move away from pop singer headlong into the sort of bubblegum-snapping slick talk that she has all but cornered the market on. Compared to her debut, "Animal," which was released in January, "Cannibal" is riskier, narrower and more successful.

NYTimes writer Jon Caramanica is pretty hard on Pink Friday, claiming the project falls short of our expectations of Nicki:

Gone is much of the attitude and exuberance of her guest appearances, replaced with what can only be described as a sense of purpose, something she has never before been burdened by.

AND

Too often — "Fly," "Save Me," "Here I Am" — she turns maudlin, as if in search of an Oprah couch. Worse, these songs don't take advantage of her natural gifts as a vocalist: there's no element of surprise, no unusual vocal tics, no sense of theater, only melodrama.

He does heap some praise on “Roman’s Revenge,” noting:

These are the expectation-bending rhymes that have made Nicki Minaj the most dangerous rapper to share a song with, and here, even Eminem sounds hungry, wanting to keep up. But that attitude is too scarce on this album, as if now, no longer having to make an impression loudly, she's unsure of what to say, and how to say it.

Then begins the comparisons between Nicki Minaj and Ke$ha… At first it seems that Nicki is at an advantage,

“Still, even at her dullest, Nicki Minaj is more technically gifted, more thoughtful and more radical than Kesha,”

But mid-sentence he twists the knife by continuing:

which makes it somewhat maddening that, with "Cannibal," Kesha threatens to become the most influential female rapper of the day, or at least the most popular.

We’ve never been among the believers in Ke$ha as a “rapper” but Caramanica makes the argument she is one:

Pretending Kesha isn't a rapper is no longer feasible. She's primarily singing on only two songs here, "The Harold Song" and "C U Next Tuesday." In the past she was accused of appropriating the style of the white-girl hipster-rap curio Uffie, but here, on songs like "Carnival" and "Crazy Beautiful Life," she might be channeling Kid Sister, or more to the point, they're both channeling L'Trimm, all sneering saucy talk.

Nevertheless, Kesha's album has the sound of an artist loosening up to fully inhabit a new creative space, while Nicki Minaj's reflects the pressure — self-imposed or otherwise — associated with the weight of expectation and moral authority. And while Nicki Minaj frets, Kesha feels more unbound then ever, free to do stupid things, smartly.

Both Nicki and Ke$ha worked with Atlanta producer Bangladesh (Nicki on “Did It On’em,” Ke$ha on “Sleazy”) so the next comparison focuses on those efforts, specifically in their different takes on gender roles. Nicki also seems to come out on top in this battle, with Caramanica conceding “Kesha has lower aims, and even less idea of how to achieve them,” and “For her, gender roles are fixed. Her transgressions aren't subversive, just familiar frat humor coming from a woman's mouth.”

Finally Caramanica concludes:

Nicki Minaj's and Kesha's audiences couldn't be more different. Same goes for their styles. That there's overlap between the two turns out to be the biggest surprise. There's one outright Kesha-like song on Nicki Minaj's album: "Check It Out," produced by will.i.am, on which her vocals are run through a tinny Auto-Tune-like effect. "Competition/Why, yes/I would love some," she says. Of course she has none in hip-hop — maybe she should be looking elsewhere anyhow.

The closing sentence actually does seem fitting. While the public has largely been focused on competition between Nicki Minaj and Lil Kim — Nicki’s audience and her willingness to sing and try a more mainstream/pop approach makes for a good argument for a Ke$ha rivalry.

What do you think? Is Ke$ha any competition for Nicki Minaj?
