Walk A Mile In Her Heels: Olsenboye's "Uptown" Heels

Posted: 26 Nov 2010 11:02 AM PST

The other day I put on heels for maybe the fifth or sixth time in my life, sacrificing my feet to a pair of Olsenboye studded pumps from J.C. Penny. And I got dumber immediately! Meaning I spent ten minutes trying to figure out how to take a photo of my outfit that captured my shoes but didn’t get the edge of the table in frame. As you can see, I did not succeed.

I’m a tiny half-human and I’ll admit to feeling an instant surge of power after stepping into the shoes. The 3-inch heels made me, like, regular person height. Almost tall even! If Napoleon had been acquainted with Olsenboye he never would have invaded Russia.

I felt like I needed to try out some normal everyday activities before I could commit to anything where actual people I knew could see me stumbling around like a drunken stilt-man, so I walked to the grocery store and did some shopping. I live on the third floor of a Brooklyn walkup and attempting to go down all those steps was pretty difficult. And my street has its share of bumps and grates, so that was tricky as well. But I will say this: it was nice to be able to reach the oatmeal on the top shelf! (Yes, I only eat top-shelf oatmeal. Duh.) However, I felt totally self-conscious that people would think I was one of those women who can’t take her damn heels off long enough to run a couple errands. But I guess that was my own fault.

Comfort: 3 Pumps
The heels were definitely easier to walk in than I’d anticipated, probably because there’s an inch of platform under the toe to alleviate the height difference. I didn’t wear them long enough to develop any blisters, but I did experience a few moments of what-the-hell-was-I-thinking-level pain.

Functionality: 3 pumps
The shoes are black so they’re pretty versatile, and the two times I put them on they happened to match what I was wearing perfectly. The studs are a little much for office wear, though — unless you’re a receptionist at an S&M club.

Class Factor: 2.5 pumps
This is a tricky one for these particular shoes because the Olsens’ line is obviously aimed at teenagers. So in terms of trying to class up my look and appear all fancy and grown-up, these were probably not the way to go as they’re better suited for a fun night out. As in: somewhere between Dom PĂ©rignon-and-ballroom dancing and Wild Turkey-and-Big Buck Hunter.

Terrain Mobility: 2 pumps
I’m a really, really fast walker and it was super frustrating that my shoes slowed me down! And there was the whole stairs thing, which I’m frankly shocked didn’t end in my hospitalization. Let me know when someone invents rollerheels.

Final Conclusion:
The shoes were definitely easier to deal with than I’d anticipated, but still a pretty big pain. And while they’re totally cute, stylistically, they’re just not quite me! Honestly, I can’t really see myself pulling these out of the closet every day. I’m not saying I’m necessarily opposed to more high-heeled adventures, I just don’t think these pumps are the ones for me. I’ve always been more downtown than uptown.

Walk A Mile In Her Heels: Falling Head Over Olsenboye

Oh Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen, what I won’t do for you two. I was dubious about changing from my normal sneakers into your pink suede Ivy platform boots (part of your Olsenboye line at JCPenney) just in time for Thanksgiving, especially since I was traveling across the country to spend the holidays with my boyfriend’s parents. I mean there is stunt journalism, and then there is relationship-ruining journalism.

I was buoyed by the reactions I received when I put my query on what to pair these shoes with to the taste-makers at Fashism.com. I expected people to tell me that I looked ridiculous, or that (even worse) the only thing that would go with these shoes was a giant taffeta dress. (It’s not that I don’t have that dress, I’m just saving it in my wedding chest.) I was pleasantly surprised. “I’d definitely pair with some floaty vintage-inspired dresses, and a motorcycle jacket,” said one reviewer, “They bridge sweet and sassy.” Another commenter wanted to know where she could buy a pair. More people agreed on skinny jeans and a motorcycle jacket. “Those are hot. Because of the color your options are limitless!” summed up the general consensus, which rated the boots at 79 percent.

On the other hand, readers on Crushable thought the shoes were too garish to buy for themselves. On the other other hand, the majority of you would have me wear the Olsenboye boots paired with a black dress for the holidays, as opposed to wearing the Ann Taylor heels from our previous experiment. The people had spoken.

Okay, so they were actually pretty cool to look at, and made me feel like one of the Pink Ladies from Grease. But were they wearable to a girl who was more used to Sketchers than stilettos? Here’s how my rating broke down:
