As we mentioned this morning, Nick Lachey finally proposed to his long-suffering girlfriend Vanessa. I made a crack about Jessica Simpson going on a tequila bender after hearing the news, and it looks like I was right. Shock. According to PopEater's gossipy sources, Jessica Simpson isn't doing too well with this whole "My ex-husband is marrying a beauty queen, and they have my money, y'all!" thing. Prepare yourself… I have the feeling that this report is only the first of many, many tabloid pieces analyzing how well Jessica is doing, and how she's drinking more, and how she's drunk dialing Nick, and how none of it matters because she HAS ERIC. Eric will play a large part in this. In fact, I can even see a competing engagement announcement. But first, PopEater's report: Nick Lachey and Vanessa Minnillo’s engagement news on Thursday came as a surprise for everyone except ex-wife Jessica Simpson, who knew the day would come when the man she let get away would propose to another woman. “Even though Jessica wants to be happy for Nick, this is a very difficult time for her,” a friend of Simpson’s tells me. “Nick was the love of her life then, man, and he was her first, so she will always have a very special place in her heart for him. She’s deeply saddened.” The happy couple told Us Weekly that they were excited and incredibly happy about their engagement and look forward to a wonderful future together. Classy Nick got down on one knee and popped the question with an Asscher-cut diamond. It was merely months after his ugly divorce from Jessica that Nick and Vanessa started dating in 2006, and although they briefly separated last summer, they got back together very quickly. “Nick knows what it’s like to lose someone that you love and wasn’t going to let it happen again,” a friend of the crooner tells me. “He never thought he would ever get married again after Jessica broke his heart. He never thought he would ever allow himself to be vulnerable again, but after dating for a long time he trusts Vanessa and knows she’s the girl he wants to spend the rest of his life with.” A Simpson insider tells me Jessica has yet to contact Nick to say congrats, and that it’s possible it may stay that way for a while, for fear she may not come off as sincere.

Maybe my mind is just especially scattered today, what with Verizon and I taking a fatwa out against each other, but it really seems like today is the day for "no sh-t Sherlock" stories. Life & Style's moment comes via the Cameron Diaz-Alex Rodriguez breakup. Now… did anyone think they were still together? Sources were reporting their split nearly a month ago, and Camy has already been spotted out and about (and possibly hooking up with) various dudes, including one sloshed night with Matthew Morrison. So… this story is only amusing because sources spell out why A-Rod and Camy couldn't make it work: basically, the boning got boring and they realized they hated each other. Basically. Life & Style can exclusively report that after almost seven months of dating, actress Cameron Diaz and Yankees player Alex Rodriguez have called it quits. "Cameron and A-Rod are no longer dating and have definitely parted ways," a source tells Life & Style. "He just doesn’t like her anymore. That’s honestly the reason they split.” Speculation of the breakup began when Cameron was seen leaving Morton's Club in London with a mystery man on Oct. 19, while A-Rod was playing in the biggest game of the season. Just days later, she was caught leaving LA's Bardot nightclub on Oct. 21 with Glee star Matthew Morrison. To add more fuel to the fire, A-Rod was seen partying in Las Vegas on Oct. 28 sans Cameron. "A-Rod got a table at Haze night and a huge group of Romanian models happened to be at the very next table," an eyewitness tells Life & Style. "A-Rod was chatting up a storm with the girls and spent the night hanging out with them." He showed up at the opening of the JW Marriott Marquis Miami last night once again without Cameron. The romance began in February, when the pair was spotted flirting and dancing at a Miami party the night before the Super Bowl. Since then, Cameron was spotted at A-Rod's NYC apartment and a variety of hot spots, but they often tried to avoid the public eye. The couple haven't been seen together since Sept. 22, when they enjoyed some late-night partying in NYC.

She wasn't all Kate Hudson-y about it, like the dick was so amazing and she needed the world to know. Camy knows good dong. And she knows "this too shall pass". So just had fun, kept it quiet, rarely went out in public with A-Rod, and now she will try her best to pretend that sh-t never happened. Camy is kind of a slut-hero, isn't she? No judgement, y'all. There’s a cute story in this week’s National Enquirer about a celebrity doing the right thing and returning a duplicate check for an appearance fee payment that was already astronomical. Ben Affleck allegedly “earned” $250,000 for showing up at the opening for a new casino in South Carolina. His wife Jennifer Garner came too, so I’m hoping that check was for the both of them and not just Ben. Anyway the casino sent them two checks by mistake (maybe something to do with one for Ben, one for Jen) and he sent one back! The casino told the Enquirer that they’re really grateful that Ben was honest because they probably wouldn’t have noticed.
Ben Affleck… was mistakenly sent two $250,000 checks for attending the glitzy grand opening of an $80 million casino at the famed Greenbrier resort. But unlike the shady thief he plays in the smash hit “The Town,” Affleck notified casino officials of the error, and promptly returned one of the $250,000 checks. “We’re very, very grateful. He’s obviously a very honest guy,” said Jim Justice, the multimillionaire owner of the Greenbrier casino in White Sulpher Springs, W. Va… An avid poker player, Affleck reportedly didn’t sit down to play a hand. But after [he] returned home, he discovered the casino had sent him not one, but two $250,000 checks for his appearance fee. “We mistakenly paid him twice,” admitted Justice. “Fortunately, he called us or we never would have caught it.”
[From The National Enquirer, print edition, November 15, 2010] This is heartwarming and all, but I’m sure Affleck has someone handling his schedule and finances for him who noticed the error. Still, it’s nice. The real story to me is that he was paid a quarter of million just to show up somewhere. You would think that Ben wouldn’t even rate six figures. If you add his wife in there, I get it though. Plus he’s back with a vengeance now that The Town was such a succes. Kaiser reminded me that Ben is rumored to have a gambling addiction, which is a story that I think was started after he went to rehab for alcohol in 2001.
He’s since won poker tournaments. I remember stories about him dropping tens of thousands gambling - and also being an incredibly generous tipper. While I was doing some googling for this post, I found this touching story about how Affleck granted a dying 21-year-old’s wish to go gambling with him in Vegas last year. Now that’s a more generous act than returning a duplicate check.

At this point, I doubt Miley Cyrus even cares. People Magazine confirms that Miley and Liam Hemsworth have broken up yet again, after doing the breakup-back together crap a few months ago. He's been in Australia for the past week or so, and he's been photographed with various Aussie girls, and there are rumors that his family has become very anti-Cyrus. For Miley's part, she's got mama drama as Tish bangs her way through the hair bands of the 80s. So… yeah, Miley and Liam were in "different places". Here's more about the breakup from People: It’s been a rough week for Miley Cyrus. As her parents Billy Ray and Tish Cyrus go through a public divorce, Miley also underwent a quiet split of her own. Miley, who turns 18 on Nov. 23, is no longer dating her Last Song costar Liam Hemsworth, 20, according to a source. “Their on- and off-again relationship is currently off,” says the source. “But you never know with Miley and Liam. They could be back on at some point.” Adds another source close to Hemsworth: “There was no drama. The relationship just ran its course. They were good friends first and remain friends.” The pair met while filming the Last Song in June, 2009. They first split this past August only to rekindle their romance in September. But lately the two have been living separate lives: Hemsworth has been in Australia, where he hosted the Nickelodeon Kids’ Choice Awards and has been spending time with his family. Miley is currently in Madrid, preparing to perform at the MTV European Music Awards Sunday.

The Enquirer has an absolutely SHOCKING story about Suri Cruise this week. Apparently – prepare to clutch your pearls – Suri is a diva. She throws tantrums. And she always gets her way. GASP. Since we already knew this, what is so special about this report? Nothing really, except Suri's diva behavior is really starting to get out of hand, and everybody noticed what a brat (alleged!) Suri is on the set of Jack & Jill (where Katie Holmes has a supporting part). Move over Mariah and J.Lo, you’ve been upstaged by a brand-new Hollywood diva - 4-year-old SURI CRUISE! Sources tell The ENQUIRER that the mini-fashionista is out of control with her demands on the L.A. set of mom Katie Holmes’ new comedy, Jack and Jill - and Suri’s not even in the film. “Suri always gets her way, whether at home or on the set,” said a source close to dad Tom Cruise, currently filming Mission: Impossible IV in Prague. “She’s a champion tantrum thrower, and neither her mom and dad at home nor the cast and crew on Katie’s movie can deny her. She can be as sweet and charming as all get-out, but look out if she doesn’t get what she wants.” Observers working on the movie thought it was cute when Suri began telling people to “shush” as cameras rolled. Did you know that people in rehab got to go on shopping excursions? I didn't. And here I thought Lindsay Lohan's rehab was so stuff, what with the lack of crack and caffeine. Turns out, they let the crackheads go to malls. Something tells me that for Lindsay, Old Navy might be the gateway drug (and Forever 21 would be the heroin overdose, in that anology) Plus, have you been to a mall lately? Mine has turned into a total ghetto. I could score drugs down by the Hickory Farms much easier than I could on any street corner. Lindsay Lohan got to indulge in a favorite pastime on Tuesday during a quick trip outside the walls of her rehab. The Mean Girls star headed to a nearby shopping center for some retail therapy, RadarOnline.com has learned exclusively. Lohan, who is currently in treatment at the Betty Ford Center, went to Forever 21 in Palm Desert, California with an unidentified female. “Lindsay came in two days ago with another young woman. Lindsay kept to herself, but was friendly. Lindsay bought a leopard sweater, a lot of pajama bottoms, and a ton of socks,” the store manager Tiffany Bennett told RadarOnline.com. “Her choices were for leisure wear. Lindsay spent about $200 total and she paid for the items herself.” Lohan’s shopping companion also did some damage, buying up around $300 worth of merchandise. “We were surprised that Lindsay was so low key,” Bennett said. “The only thing she asked us to do was to hold some of the items at the front until she was finished picking things out.” According to Bennett, the actress “looks really, really good” and added that locals often spot her at Starbucks. “She goes to the Starbucks next door all the time.” Lohan was ordered to stay at Betty Ford until January 3 by Judge Elden Fox. If Lindsay fails to follow any of Judge Fox’s orders, she could face being sent to jail for six months.

The National Enquirer has a report that I think will amuse many of us. According to their sources, Rielle Hunter is "cheating" on her lover, former senator John Edwards. They don’t really say who Rielle is boning, only that she's traveled to Hollywood to "try to look up some famous former boyfriends." Like Matt LeBlanc?!? And JOHN CUSACK? Bitch, hands off the Cusack. LaBlanc you can have though, if you want him. In a shocking new twist to the biggest political scandal in recent history, RIELLE HUNTER is being unfaithful to JOHN EDWARDS, the father of their love child. The ENQUIRER has learned that the disgraced presidential candidate and his 46-year-old mistress had a major blowout after she traveled to Hollywood recently and tried to look up some famous former boyfriends. The ex-videographer tried to reach out to Friends hunk Matt LeBlanc and Gross Pointe Blank star John Cusack, an insider told The ENQUIRER. “Rielle decided to contact her old flames.” The star-chaser boasted to a pal that “if she can’t marry John Edwards, then marrying a famous actor is high up in those dreams of hers!” Although Rielle struck out, it wasn’t from lack of trying, sources say. She’s even telling friends that she wants to rekindle an old romance with Matt LeBlanc. But some sources think that by pursuing anything with these actors, Rielle is cheating on Edwards. As for John Cusack, Rielle couldn’t find him either when she went to LA. But she continues to brag that she and Cusack dated years ago, after being introduced by a friend.
