Interview: Luca Harino, The Woman Behind Willow Smith's 'Snail Nails'

Posted: 05 Nov 2010 11:12 AM PDT

In addition to having a hit song everyone in the world can’t stop singing with “Whip Your Hair,” Willow Smith is becoming a little trend setter. When we saw Willow on The Ellen Degeneres Show recently, we noticed some crazed nail designs she was sporting. Now we’ve tracked down the stylist responsible for these designs to find out how these came into being. Her name is Luca Harino, and she is a Los Angeles based designer who is working to bring this Japanese trend stateside. She calls them”Cookie Nails,” and says she lets Willow mix and match whichever designs she’s in the mood for in the morning. (Make sure to click through our gallery to see some more of Luca’s more outrageous designs!)

Are you mostly a nail artist or is this a new specialty?
My specialty is in styling/designing nail art as well as clothing. I was part of the Michael Jackson "This Is It" tour styling team where we embellished & detailed the costumes with crystals.

What do you call these nail treatments?
Cookie Nails by Luca

How did you get started doing this?
I am a girl who loves being fun & sexy. My nail art is my way of expressing the inner self. I don’t believe in getting wrapped up or suppressed by social norms, age gender or social backgrounds. People should express themselves in any way that they can. In this case, I express myself through my nail art.

How did you meet Willow?
Through her amazing hairstylist, Marcia Hamilton. She’s been with the Smiths for a while and I’ve known her for few years.

Are these a Japanese trend that is coming to America?
Yes, these 3D over the top nail designs have been popular in Japan for more than 10 years. Of course the design all varies depending on the artist. My style is rocker, sexy & edgy. Different than other stylist’s designs, my designs are very unique to me.

Are we going to see these more often?
I hope so! Like I said, these nail designs have been popular in Japan for a while. Girls in the states appreciate them but they are bit timid to put them on themselves. I would love to see more girls here have fun with it & be more colorful!

What is the upkeep like on nails like these?
It all depends on the client needs. If the client wants something more permanent I will sculpt the designs out of acrylic & attach nail tips to the nail bed and build onto it with acrylic. These more permanent designs typically will need to be filled every 2 weeks. When I worked on Rihanna's nail designs for the BET awards in New York, we went with a more permanent adhesion & design. But when I have clients like Willow, who is looking for something less permanent, I will attach the art designs to press-on nails and adhere the press on nails to the client's nailbed. This will give the client the option to remove the nail easily. I’ve designed several sets for Willow & she likes to mix & match the different sets to create her own look.

Is it hard to keep the tips attached?
No, it really is no different than getting the usual acrylic nails put on. The designs are what make my 3D nails unique.

How do new clients usually react to these designs?
I love watching the progression of my clients. They usually start out safe but as the months and years go by they get bolder, bigger & crazier with their design choices. I LOVE that!

Colleges Relying Less On SATS While More Kids Take the Test

Posted: 05 Nov 2010 11:07 AM PDT

Today, over 34 percent of our nation’s top accredited universities and colleges aren’t using the SATs as a requirement for admission. That’s awesome, since it’s been proven time and time again that those tests are biased toward affluent, middle-class white kids. And guess what? Even for those lucky suckers, the PSATS and SATs are still the most horrible part of junior year. Lets call the whole thing off!

Except that kids these days don’t know what’s good for them, or their parents don’t: a “record number of students” took the SATS or the ACTs this year. Looks like old habits die hard…and the argument, “But mom, Newsweek says I don’t need to take another practice test” doesn’t actually work that well.

These people are aware that they’re adults, right? Just checking. A group of Harry Potter cosplayers hit Grand Central Station to act out a scene involving He Who Shall Not Be.. er, Voldemort. And passersby seem pretty confused about the whole thing.

Con of these guys showing up in public: Our collective sanity.
Pro of these guys showing up in public:: Cheap kids’ birthday parties!

Biker Tattoo or 4th-Grader Backup? Crazy Dad Stirs Up Elementary Controversy

Posted: 05 Nov 2010 10:35 AM PDT

We’re not prudes or anything, and we’re the first ones in line to rail against public schools that don’t let kids dye their hair or be lesbians at prom, but we’re kind of okay with the Texas principal telling a 9-year-old not to carry around a backpack with a naked chick on it through school.

Funnily enough, the kid agreed with him. But the father of Quentin Ferrer went out and bought his son a new one, went to school and starting going off about censorship. And that’s kind of deplorable: using your kid to make a public stand (or try to get lawsuit money) while your son is getting mocked in the halls and would rather wear Lisa Frank from head-to-foot than use the back of a trucker’s mudflap to carry his books in.

But what do you think? Would your grade-school self think this backpack was rad or like, totally creepy? Give it to the 9th-grader with the pet rat, he’ll appreciate it.

It’s still super gray and gloomy out, so we might just stare at this photo of Petey Wright from the fall issue of Citizen K until we cheer up. Petey’s a 22-year-old model from Nashville who totally has a James Dean-meets-Johnny Depp thing gong on. And did we mention his name is Petey? Swoon.

Spirit Hood Founder Alexander Mendeluk On His Own Spirit Animal

Posted: 05 Nov 2010 08:57 AM PDT

If you don’t know about Crushable’s obsession with SpiritHoods, you haven’t been paying attention. The animal-inspired hats with attaching scarves and mittens are the most brilliant accessory to come out of the 21st century, and we just had to know who was behind the clothing-wear that’s cool enough for Ke$ha. We spoke to the founder of SpiritHoods.com, Alexander Mendeluk, and got him to answer a couple of our own questions about the true nature of his inner spirit (hood).
Crushable: Who are you, and where do you come from?
Alexander: My name is Alexander Mendeluk aka. Squirrely – I was born in L.A. and grew up on a farm in Oregon. I don’t really have a place that I come from. . . always grew up traveling. My background is in Film/Acting, SpiritHoods was a freak accident.
Crushable: What’s was your inspiration for creating these?
Alexander: Everyone’s an animal! We are all drawn to a pack mentality a Tribe mentality. The inspiration comes from our wild natures. We are a group of four brothers and creatives. We are inspired by music, adventure, burning man, festivals, travel, crazies and Squirrels.
Crushable: We had a poll asking the best place to where your Spirit Hood. Do you guys have any suggestions? Are there any places you shouldn’t wear the hoods?
Alexander: The hoods are a lifestyle, anything that pertains to your lifestyle a SpiritHood is necessary to be worn. I wouldn’t wear my hood hunting.
Crushable: What are your personal spirit hoods?
Alexander: The first prototype we made under “SpiritHoods” was a leopard. It’s lost it’s spots now. We have some interesting concepts floating around here in the Spirit Den. Marley wears a wolf, Ashley wears a rainbow unicorn pony, Chase is a monkey lion and I wear my ninja squirrel hood.
Crushable: Have you ever thought about branching out into spirit hoodies? Spirit evening wear?
Alexander: Check out our new Night Hawk Shawl to be released December 1st. Also limited editions sold at Fred Segal/Ron Herman.
Crushable: I’m a Gemini, enjoy horror movies, and write fan-fiction. What is my spirit hood?
Alexander: Well, Geminis have split personalities – They can go from bubbly to dark and mysterious – am I right? Throw in some science fiction and you might need NightWolfPanda with some blue and pink fluffies.
Crushable: What was your first thought when you started getting requests from celebs like Ke$ha?
Alexander: It’s go time BAAAAABY!!!!! Come jump in the water’s warm, join the Tribe crazy lady. . .

Interview: Bryan Greenberg Has 'Made It In America'

Posted: 05 Nov 2010 09:30 AM PDT

Bryan Greenberg is one of our favorite HBO stars. He’s also been extremely busy in the last year. His show How To Make It In America is starting to film its second season next week. And he spent the last few months filming two movies: Friends with Benefits and The Normals. In addition, he’s got a new album called “We Don’t Have Forever” coming out in January. AND, he’s the new face of Casio watches.  Last night, Crushable sat down with Bryan to chat about the last year, and whether his character Ben Epstein has beef with Entourage’s Vincent Chase.

It looks like you’ve moved up from jeans to watches. Have you now “made it” in America?
I guess I’m on my way. I’m not Jay-Z, but I’m moving up. I would actually wear this watch, so I don’t feel like I’m selling out. I’d already wear it.

Is How To Make It in America based on a person’s actual life?
It’s all fictional. There are a lot of people who claim this is there story. There are a lot of people who can relate to this. I can’t believe how many people have come up to me since the show’s aired, and I couldn’t believe how many people can related to this stuff. It’s very real to what they’ve gone through.

Your show is  going to be on with Entourage Sunday nights this Spring. Does your character Ben get compared to Vincent Chase a lot?
When it first came out, the comparisons are inevitable. There are comparisons, and it’s Mark Wahlberg. But people know that it is its own entity. But it’s a completely different show. After people see it, they start to see what it is.

Any spoilers for the upcoming season?
The goal is for Ben Epstein to start from nothing and become Ralph Lauren. It’s not going to happen easily, but we’re on the precipice of maybe doing something big this year.

Between How To Make It In America, all the films you’re shooting this year and your new album, it sounds like this is going to be a pretty busy year for you.
Yeah, that’s why I need a watch.
