Emma Watson is the adorable cover girl for the December issue of Marie Claire, all to promote Harry Potter and The Machine of Money. In the above photo, I love her hair. In another shot (below), I don't care for it as much. But I like the fact that she cut it all off after being contractually obligated to wear it long for so many years. I also think her shorter hair works well with the new image she's trying to forge for herself, post-Potter. She's a Brown student and a working actress, and she will study hard and take supporting parts. I've said it before, but she seems really grounded and like she's genuinely a sweet, good girl. We'll see. Marie Claire's full interview excerpt is here, and here are some highlights from the interview:
Emma on her parents: “I’ve had so much freedom: sometimes it’s been hard. My parents wanted to protect me, but they had no idea how.”
On her hair: “I’ve wanted to do it since I was about 16, and when Harry Potter ended in June, I just needed a change ” Watson said. “It was quite symbolic for me. It’s very short; it was buzzed at the back and on the sides. And it’s really liberating that I can walk out without thinking about it.”
On being a student in America: “The first year at Brown was about finding my feet,” she said. “I found a great group of girlfriends, and now that I know how things work and what the professors expect, I’m really excited about going back for my second year, because I feel this time I can relax and enjoy it.” Watson is deeply grateful for the way she’s been treated by her peers. “Brown has a real sense of community, and people are very protective of me,” she said. “They really look out for me; they want me to feel like I’m part of it. I threw my 20th birthday party at Brown, and I didn’t even have to say to anyone not to put pictures on Facebook. Not a single picture went up. That was when I knew I’d found a solid group of friends, and I felt like I belonged.”
On the end of Potter: “My last day was pretty emotional,” she admitted. “It was sad; it’s the end of an era. What an amazing learning experience! I gave everything I could to that role, and I got so much from it. It wasn’t like I made one movie; it was working consistently for 10 years. There was no reprieve,” Watson said. “But I’m glad I saw it through to the end; I played that character from the start, and I wanted to finish what I started. It felt very satisfying that I had completed Hermione’s journey. Playing Hermione just came so naturally; I had a real affinity for her,” she said. “I felt like I knew exactly who she was. Like me, she’s very loyal and determined, she’s very intelligent, and she has a lot of guy friends, as I do. Her eagerness to please and to have the right answer is definitely like me. I’m a perfectionist, so my bossiness definitely comes out.”
On becoming a child actor: “I started working on the audition at 9 in the morning and didn’t stop until 5 in the evening,” she recalled. “The tape was just me doing the same thing hundreds of times over, until I got it exactly right. I was just amazed at my stamina. The grown-ups said, ‘We had to stop you; you wanted to keep going.’ I’ve always been like that; I give 100 percent. I can’t do it any other way." Watson’s parents, who divorced when she was very young, are both lawyers—her father is a telecommunications attorney, and her mother is a solicitor—but their little girl made it clear they were not to stand in her way. “I would never have forgiven my parents if they had made me turn down that opportunity,” she said. “I just loved performing. It just made me feel alive. It’s scary, but that’s part of it. I think it’s important to have that extra adrenaline. It gives you that extra zing.”
On not needing to rebel: “I do things in my own way, but I’ve never felt any need to rebel,” she said. “To be honest, I’ve always had far too much freedom. I had a job when I was 10. I started living on my own when I was 17 or 18. I’ve earned my own money; I’ve traveled the world. What would I rebel against? I’ve had so much freedom, sometimes it was hard. My parents wanted to protect me, but they had no idea how to. I had to learn as I went and make my own mistakes. I went from being totally unknown and never acting professionally to being in a major movie and being very famous. It all happened so quickly, I didn’t have any time to work things out. It’s been pretty scary at times.”
That last part really struck me - because that's what someone like Lindsay Lohan had too, didn't she? She had so much freedom at such a young age, and no one had any idea how to protect her either. So why did Emma end up such a good egg and Lindsay ended up such a f-cking crackhead? Was it that Emma's parents actually grounded her, even if they didn't know about the world she was in? Was it because Emma's parents weren't partying with her and taking their "manager's cut" from her earnings? I don't know. But I think I may be on to something.
Here's Marie Claire's behind-the-scenes video of the photo shoot:
Katy Perry is the December girl for Harper's Bazaar. Now… I don't really like Katy. I think she's supremely untalented, and I can't stand her current styling incarnation. How she rates a Harper's Bazaar cover, I have no idea, especially the December issue - one of the biggest of the year. To make matters worse, I'm not even sure I would have known this cover was Katy unless the email from Bazaar hadn't lead off with it. They did some crazy 'Shopping to her face. Ugh. The interview isn't much better - the full piece is here, and here are some highlights:
On copying Dita von Teese: “I have multipersonality disorder—in a very good way, of course—when it comes to my fashion choices,” she says of her ability to slip from party girl to polish. “When I first started playing around with my look, it was more of a Dita Von Teese pinup thing.” But the burlesque look is too high maintenance. “Dita’s really dedicated,” she says.
On her husband, Russell Brand and his spiritual quest: "I always knew I wanted a great man of God, someone who was going to be an inspiration for people and also be a lovely husband and father," she says. "We're at different places in our lives, but we can still grow together. He's thought-provoking, articulate, a real advocate. I also definitely wanted to have a laugh. I have all that in him."
On her competition: She is part of a new wave of pop stars—among them, Lady Gaga, Rihanna, and Fergie— but her fellow quick-change artists are more sisters than competitors: "We're all unique. That's why we all win and we all can exist. People don't want just vanilla. They want 31 flavors. I couldn't do what Rihanna does. I couldn't do what Gaga does. They can't do what I do."
On her image: "I'm kind of a good girl—and I'm not," she says. "I'm a good girl because I really believe in love, integrity, and respect. I'm a bad girl because I like to tease. I know that I have sex appeal in my deck of cards. But I like to get people thinking. That's what the stories in my music do."
On body image and fashion: Her particular flavor tends toward the saucy. “I’ll tell you about my boobs and fashion,” she says. “It can be hard to wear those looks”—like the ones shown here—”because they’re best on people who have no curves or thighs. I don’t have a Kate Moss body, but I’m very proud and happy with mine.” Yet, at 13, she pined for a breast reduction. “I had really bad back problems and was a little bit thicker. Then I grew up and lost the baby fat and said, ‘Hey, this isn’t all that bad.’”
On the Sesame Street controversy: “If there had been a problem on the set, they would have said it to me at the outset. We had many different options.” She came back with a sketch on Saturday Night Live in which she squeezed into a red Elmo T-shirt, the neckline slashed to showcase what all the fuss was about. “How do you respond otherwise?”
I guess the most notable part is where she refers to Brand as a "great man of God, someone who was going to be an inspiration for people and also be a lovely husband and father." I mean… God. I hope she doesn't really feel that way, because I have a horrible premonition that (gasp) her marriage isn't going to last because she'll walk into their home one day and find Russell in bed with a blonde, a brunette and a mountain goat.
We spend too much time on Jessica Simpson. We are like Papa Joe in that way - always obsessing over Jess's life and clothes and boyfriends and gay BFF breakups. And Ashlee becomes The Forgotten Simpson, and her clothes are rarely analyzed, her weight loss discusses briefly then instantly forgotten, her marriage not scandalous in any way. So let's talk about Ashlee for a moment - these are photos from launch of Decades Denim in LA last night. Ashlee recently cut her hair into this sweet little pixie cut - you'd think that she wouldn't be able to pull it off, but she does.
As for the dress, and as for Ashlee's figure - I think she looks really good. The dress is vintage Chanel, and I find it slightly boring, but it looks good on Ashlee, and she sometimes has pretty nice taste. It's a classy dress, and I like that she's somewhat covered up. As for Ashlee's figure - after a few years of everyone calling her anorexic, it looks like she's put some weight back on (just a few pounds), and I think she looks pretty healthy.
PopEater says that Ashlee is channeling Edie Sedgwick - I can see that. Especially with the earrings, which are my least favorite part of the ensemble. They overwhelm the whole look, which could have been completely cute. They're too heavy, and they distract from the hair. The makeup is great though. Overall: Ashlee is now a better dresser than Jessica Simpson.
Of all the solutions to life's struggles and tribulations, acupuncture is one of the remedies I am most wary of. I understand the idea behind it - that our bodies have pressure points, and that if you "puncture" a certain part of your toe, your headache will be relieved, et cetera. I know people who swear by it. I know people who hate needles of all kinds, and get barfy and queasy at the idea of someone sticking something sharp into them. I am one of the latter category. I get barfy around needles. My mother was recently hospitalized, and they couldn't find a vein to get blood, and the nurse was jabbing at my mom's arm, and I swear, I started sweating and hyperventilating and I almost passed out.
Anyway, Mariah Carey swears by acupuncture, and she claims - in a new cover interview with Us Weekly - that it helped her in the difficult months she and Nick were trying to get pregnant after their first miscarriage.
After suffering a miscarriage following her April 2008 wedding to Nick Cannon, Mariah Carey cried herself to sleep many nights. But in an exclusive interview in the new Us Weekly (on newsstands now), the singer says she and Cannon never gave up.
Though she dismisses reports that she did IVF, Carey tells Us Weekly she began taking progesterone, a hormone that is often prescribed to boost fertility and support or help maintain pregnancy in women susceptible to miscarriage.
Cannon also tells Us Weekly his wife relied on “once-a-day” acupuncture, “all over her body. I think it helped her quite a bit, because it was a good destressor.”
Seeing Carey’s face when they learned she was pregnant “was priceless,” Cannon recalls. “We definitely cried. We still cry all the time. It’s an emotional journey.”
With their baby due in spring, Carey says it still “amazes” her she’s going to have Cannon’s child. “He’s a great person, and we have more in common than not,” she tells Us Weekly.
“I know people initially were, ‘What? Those two?’ But I think people who know us get it.”
For more - including what Carey thinks about her “weight gain”; what foods she’s craving “in the middle of the night” and how they found out she was pregnant - pick up the new Us Weekly today!
If it works for her, then that's great. But do you think she's lying about not doing IVF? I don't know, I really don't. I think it's perfectly possible that Mariah was on the motherload of fertility drugs, and that's all.
Outlets have more details of what may have prompted Demi Lovato to cancel her European tour with the Jonas Brothers and seek treatment/rehab after some kind of altercation with a backup dancer. Apparently it all went down in an airport and there are witnesses to the fight, along with news that Demi was also talking smack to Twilight star Ashley Greene, who happens to be dating Demi’s ex, Joe Jonas. Drama! Ashley subsequently tweeted some crap about “karma” and came across like she was gloating and being petty, which seems typical for her.
A source tells E! News that Demi Lovato has struggled with bulimia, and it is among one of her emotional and physical issues. Two years ago, photos surfaced of her with suspicious marks on her wrist while she attended Miley Cyrus’ birthday party. At the time, her rep tried to shoot down the notion that it was self-mutilation, blaming it on candy jewelry…
But family sources say Lovato has indeed cut herself in the past.
However, things came to a breaking point in recent months.
“On tour [this summer] they were calling her 'Demi Drama,’ another insider with the Lovato-JoBros tour tells E! News.
“After she split with Joe, it was just a whole bunch of drama, very awkward. Everyone tried to be professional, but you could tell it was wearing down Demi. It was a taboo subject to bring up, but clearly she wasn’t over Joe.
“The [Jonas] boys got a break after the tour, but Demi went a nonstop promo campaign for Camp Rock 2 and was pushing the single for that movie. It really was too much ask of a girl that young. She just couldn’t handle it.”
“I think Demi has a lot of issues she is dealing with, but at the source of them all is a great deal of stress.”
But another source says there was even more to her weekend meltdown that saw her shut down her Twitter account and leave the JoBros tour in the middle of its South American swing.
At the airport in Peru on Saturday, Demi got into a scuffle with a backup dancer.
“She just lost it right at the airport in front of everyone,” says the source. “The [Jonases'] dad basically said right there, ‘That’s it. You’re going home.’ ”
Demi also made verbal threats to Joe’s new squeeze, Ashley Greene, who was at the airport as well and witnessed her meltdown, the source says.
Indeed, according to a someone close to the Lovato family, the airport altercation was the “catalyst” to Lovato deciding to “take responsibility” for her actions
Meanwhile Demi’s dad told Radar that the pressures of Hollywood got to her, but it sounds like he hasn’t seen much of his daughter since he split with her mom when she was little. There was a blind item recently that many of you mentioned about a teen star doing coke and having sex at a party. It could have been Demi, it could have been someone else or it could have been made up. I don’t put much stock in those blind items. I can buy that Demi freaked out and scuffled with some girl and shouted something at Ashley. She’s 18 years old and sounds really troubled. Hopefully rehab/treatment will help her.
Late Tuesday, Us Weekly released their "scandalous" report that Miley Cyrus's parents were divorcing after Billy Ray found out that his wife Tish was boning Bret Michaels, amongst others. Us Weekly's sources claimed that Tish and Bret had a full-fledged affair, and that Billy Ray found out it and basically told Tish that their marriage was over. The whole thing was first reported by Star Magazine, back in February of this year. Now Star is getting back into the act, with a follow-up to their February story, in this week's new cover story. Star reiterates the claim that Tish and Bret were bonin' but they add a new wrinkle on the divorce proceedings: Tish and The Mullet are fighting over Miley's money. Because Miley is the only one supporting herself, and the entire family. Ugh. That's worse than the affair story, in my opinion.
Turning 18 should be an exciting milestone for Miley Cyrus, but it’s hard to celebrate with her family life in meltdown mode. In the Nov. 15 issue of Star, on sale Wednesday, we reveal that Billy Ray Cyrus is divorcing his wife, Tish, in part because she was carrying on with rocker Bret Michaels.
“Billy Ray suspects there’s been something going on between his wife and Bret for a long time,” an insider tells Star. Adds another source, Tish — whose production company plans to turn Bret’s upcoming autobiography, Roses & Thorns, into a movie — “fits the profile of women Bret usually goes for: skinny, big boobs and blonde hair.”
Tish pulled out all the stops with Bret. A source says she "would always show up to the studio in tight jeans and revealing T-shirts and flirt shamelessly with Bret."
Billy Ray was "ashamed of Tish's behavior and he wants out of this mess," says the insider.
Miley should be feeling liberated as she readies to become of legal age, but instead she has to choose sides in her parents’ bitter tug-of-war over their reported $150 million estate.
“Billy Ray and Tish are already bickering over how to handle their most valuable asset — Miley,” a family sources says of the Disney star who has built an estimated billion dollar franchise out of her Hannah Montana success.
"This whole situation has hurt Miley's relationship with her mother — she's definitely going to side with her father," an insider tells Star.
For the full story on the Cyrus divorce drama — including what Tish did to win Bret's heart and why Billy Ray should have seen his split with Tish coming and — pick up the new Star on Wednesday.
Um… the Cyruses have a $150 million estate? How much of that is years of taking their "cut" from Miley's earnings? Because I don't buy that Billy Ray made that much from his music and acting career, nor from wise investments.
With Miley turning 18 years old in a few weeks, I have some advice for her, from An Old to A Young: get some professionals in control of your money, and watch what they do very carefully. Stop using Britney Spears as your guideline, and begin to examine how Madonna has managed her career and her estate. Don't give anybody control over your estate. Stop giving your parents money, but maybe create education trusts from your siblings - Noah especially is going to need to go to college. And if your parents are going to make their trashy divorce proceedings about who has control over you or your estate, you better watch out and get your own lawyer, who answers only to you, who will only represent your interests.
Khloe Kardashian isn't doing much. She's not pregnant, as far as I know, and it seems like her marriage to Lamar Odom is stable and happy. So, Khloe doesn't make much news. But occasionally she'll wear something interesting, and she'll make news. Usually, the outfit is something horrendous that makes her look like a giantess about to consume villagers. Yesterday, Khloe stepped out in NYC in this headpiece thing with ears - it looks like real fur, but I’m pretty sure it’s faux. And you know what? I actually like it. I think it's cute as hell. But I have a great deal of affection for Khloe, out of all of the Kardashian-Jenner klan. I think Khloe is the funniest. And this is a funny little head thing.
Meanwhile, Khloe gave a recent interview describing her own history with being bullied, because that's the topic this month:
Khloe Kardashian has revealed how her sisters saved her from bullies who labelled her ‘fat and ugly’. The reality TV star, who stars alongside sisters Kim and Kourtney in ‘Keeping Up With The Kardashians’, said that she was bullied mercilessly throughout most of her childhood and even into adulthood.
She told Life & Style magazine, ‘Having someone in your class call you fat, ugly, too tall and so on, you start to think all those things about yourself. And if you’re like me, those words are played on repeat inside your head. When I was at home, I felt loved and safe. My sisters were always a safe haven for me. I knew they would always play with me and make me feel like I was one of them.’
Khloe, 26, married Lakers’ player Lamar Odem in September 2009 after dating for just one month. She warned youngsters off using social networking sites, saying, ‘Now we have so many more social outlets, there are so many ways to be stalked and bullied. If social media is too much for you to handle then don’t have a Twitter or Facebook account, just be yourself. Be who you want to be.’
I've read some of the nasty stuff about Khloe, and even I am guilty of joking about her size - although I don't think I've ever called her fat or ugly, because I don’t think she’s either. She's just a big, tall girl, and in my opinion, she has a pretty face. No, my biggest criticism of Khloe is something that she can control - she doesn't always dress for her body type. She thinks she can wear the same styles as her (smaller) sisters, and that's rarely the case. But I do think she's learning - and I approve of this cat-like hood!
I don't really care about Heidi Montag and Spencer Pratt. At this point, they're just there. I barely acknowledged when they got back together, if they were ever really apart. I vowed that I would only pay attention to them again if: A) Heidi got more plastic surgery, B) Spencer had to be hospitalized with a crystal hanging out of his ass or C) They died in an orgy of crystals, Botox and fire. But I forgot about one thing I'll always pay attention to: money. Heidi and Spencer have given an interview to Life & Style about how they "blew $10 million". The answer? Crystals and back-scooping. And more!
Heidi Montag and Spencer Pratt are finally getting a dose of reality. Life & Style can exclusively reveal that after carelessly squandering $10 million — on renting a posh $35,000 per month Malibu pad, $3 million on Heidi's panned music career including buying songs for $40,000 a piece, renting studios and paying producers plus hundreds of thousands on Heidi's surgeries and aftercare, six cars, healing crystals and private jets— the fame-hungry former Hills stars now owe $2 million in taxes, are considering filing for bankruptcy and are homeless.
"We were immature, worrying too much about the famous part instead of the actual business part," Spencer tells Life & Style. "In hindsight, we shouldn't have spent any of our money. We should have been low-key and saved." Spencer continues, ""We spoke with a bankruptcy attorney and I've looked into unemployment checks."
Heidi and Spencer never imagined that The Hills wouldn't still be successful four years after its 2006 debut. So when the final season was suddenly cut from 20 episodes to 10 and they weren't paid for the 10 unaired episodes, they had already spent the money in advance.
"We thought The Hills was going to be like 90210 and we'd have another five to 10 years," Spencer says. "The ratings were consistent. But we never saw Jersey Shore coming. Before, TV audiences were fine with seeing us all argue, but now they want you to punch one another in the face and hook up with three different people. Our cast was a bit boring and snoozeworthy in comparison. No wonder we got canceled."
"At our lowest point, I considered posing for nude pictures in Playboy," Heidi, who had previously posed for the magazine clothed, admits. What stopped her? Spencer's parents' appeal for her to keep her clothes on in exchange for living in their guesthouse—a studio apartment.
"I feel like I'm 14 years old again," Spencer says. "My parents are my lifeline." And for once, his statements aren't an exaggeration. "Spencer's parents go to the grocery store for us once a week," Heidi tells Life & Style, "and that's all we get."
"We don't want sympathy," Spencer tells Life & Style. "We did this to ourselves and feel like idiots. But we've grown up and are definitely not as naive anymore."
I'm glad they say that they don't want any sympathy, because they're not getting any. Even though this interview is designed for sympathy, and more importantly, to just have their names in print just for the hell of it, because it's all they know. They blew their money because they are both so incredibly dumb. Also: why doesn't Spencer just sell off some of his crystals? Were they investments?
OK! Magazine has a new cover featuring Teen Mom’s Amber, who has been seen punching and choking her baby’s father in footage on the show. Amber is the subject of a investigation by the Department of Child Services and has allowed her ex boyfriend, her daughter Leah’s father Gary, to care for their daughter for two weeks without her. She’s since taken Amber back, according to OK!.
The article has quotes from Amber’s brother, and he seems to suggest that Gary is just as bad as Amber and somehow provoked her into attacking him. They also seem to claim that Gary abused Amber off camera. Now I’ve seen most of the second season of this show and Gary can be a passive aggressive SOB, but I doubt that he would be as openly aggressive as Amber is. That just doesn’t seem like him, or at least it isn’t the way he’s portrayed. He does stuff like not show up when he’s promised to babysit so she can go out on her birthday. He’s a jerk but he doesn’t get up in anyone’s face and turn on a dime like Amber.
Amber has a new boyfriend, an ex con who looks and acts like a druggie. She seems really spaced out when she’s with him and those two are definitely on something. It would explain a lot of her recent weight loss too, but her brother insists she’s not on anything. Here’s part of OK!’s story, which has Amber’s brother making her out to be this misunderstood person who is the product of a bad childhood:
For the past two weeks, every time teen mom Amber Portwoods baby, Leah, saw a young woman with brown hair, she called her “Mommy.” “Leah would look around and say ‘Amber, Amber, Mommy, Mommy’,” Andrew Swan, the best friend of the baby’s father, Gary Shirley, tells OK! exclusively. “It was breaking my heart.”
Then finally, on Oct. 31, Amber - who hadn’t talked to or seen her 2 year-old since Oct. 19 - swooped in to reclaim her child, spending Halloween with the tot and informing her ex Gary that she was ready to do what it takes to get her life together and find a safe new home for Leah. In fact, Amber believes she can do a better job than her ex when it comes to raising Leah, a source tells OK!
But the tearful reunion between Amber and her daughter took place as MTV’s cameras rolled, filming Teen Mom’s third season, which begs the question: Has Amber really changed, or are her new promises of maternal devotion all for show?…
Unfortunately, Gary, who grew up in a similarly dysfunctional family, seems to being out the worst in Amber. “He’s not the person he wants you to believe he is,” says Shawn [Amber's brother] of Gary, who he thinks is portrayed sympathetically on MTV. “He runs his mouth off and asks stupid questions to incite a fight. He wants to look like the victim, but he’s manipulative. He knows Amber has a temper, but he also has a temper too.”
In fact, Anderson [Indiana] police records show that Amber’s called for help several times when Gary’s temper reportedly was out of hand. And like Amber, Gary has come under investigation for domestic abuse. (See sidebar) [Ed note: follows below]
Their trouble with the law OK! obtained records showing that Amber isn’t the only one who’s been in hot water with the police.
Nov 7, 2009 Gary showed up at Amber’s apartment at 12:30 am and allegedly became verbally abusive when he discovered she had company. He later told police he was concerned that Amber was taking narcotics and being promiscuous in front of Leah.
July 8, 2010 Amber accused Gary of grabbing her by the arm and pushing her during a fight over the baby.
Sept. 29, 2010 Amber’s abuse of Gary on Teen Mom prompted viewers to contact local police and demand an investigation.
Oct 19, 2010 Amber summoned police after Gary allegedly threw her out of the house while wearing only her underwear.
[From OK! Magazine, print edition, November 15, 2010]
OK! goes on to have Amber’s brother refute Gary’s charges that Amber is taking drugs. He laughably claims “She only tried drugs once, when she was 15, and I got on her about it. She listens to me. She’s on meds, but I don’t think she’s taking more than she’s supposed to.” He also says that as children they were kept up at night due to their parents arguing and that “Now Amber sleeps all day and is awake all night. It started because we weren’t able to sleep when we were younger because of the fighting and now her trouble sleeping continues.” Are you kidding me?
Now let’s imagine that the tables were turned and that it was Gary who beat Amber twice on camera. Would anyone dare to suggest that she made him do it or that she does it too and just never gets filmed in the act? Domestic abuse is always uncalled for and it’s despicable no matter a couple’s dynamic. I get that OK! is doing well with these Teen Mom covers, hell I’ve even gotten into the show following all the coverage of their drama. They don’t need to make Amber out to be a decent person just to get an exclusive with her though. She’s not, and Leah needs to be with a sober, nonabusive parent. If Amber is going to see her daughter she should probably have court-appointed supervision.
Saturday Night Live alum Rachel Dratch welcomed her first child 10 weeks ago, a little boy named Eli Benjamin. Rachel, 44, kept the father of her baby a mystery until just recently, joking in July that “There's a whole crazy story there. But that will come out in my book.” Then after her son was born she revealed that her baby’s father is her boyfriend, a natural foods consultant named John Wahl. They were dating just six months when Rachel got pregnant the natural way. She described it as an accident in that she assumed she wasn’t still fertile. Eli was born a month early after Rachel’s doctor discovered her fluids were low during a routine visit. He now lives at home with his mom and dad in New York. People has more details, including some adorable photos that you can see on their website:
Rachel Dratch's pregnancy was a surprise to her and her boyfriend John Wahl — and her Aug. 24 delivery was no different.
"I went for a routine visit and they said my fluid was low," the comedienne, 44, recalls. "It was a month in advance, so I didn't even have a bag packed! I had to go in that night. It was a big shock."
"I was about to get on a plane!" laughs Wahl, 42, who moved to New York to be close to his new family. "But I was in the room with her when he was born. To be part of the whole process was fantastic."
Today, 10-week-old Eli Benjamin — "We just liked the name," Dratch says, adding that her grandfather was called Benjamin — is getting acclimated to life with his new family, in a nursery designed by Nate Berkus.
Because Dratch's apartment only has one bedroom, Berkus was able to divide the space with a partition so that it appears to be two rooms.
"It came out really well — it doesn't look like it's shoved in the corner," Dratch says. "Eventually I'll have to move, I guess, but he did a good job."
The unique set-up also helps with late night feedings.
"It stuns me how tireless she is. He's up at 3:30 in the morning and she's up and at 'em," marvels Wahl of his girlfriend. "This love for Eli is trumping everything! I'm not exaggerating: she says four to five times a day, 'He's so beautiful.'"
Confirms Dratch: "This has taught me [that] you never know. I feel super lucky."
Little Eli is such a cutie and he has his mom’s big blue eyes! Congratulations to Rachel and John. What a nice story they have about having a child unexpectedly.
Rachel is shown pregnant on July 21 below. She is not pregnant in the header photo, which is from October 21.
