Aretha Franklin’s Son Attacked & Hospitalized In Detroit! + Broncos’ Kenny McKinley Allegedly Commits Suicide?!

Sad news in Hollywood and the sports world.  We've got details on the vicious beating/attack on Aretha Franklin's son Eddie Franklin, and the apparent suicide of Dever Broncos receiver Kenny McKinley.  Find out more info when you read on....

Eddie Franklin, 52, the gifted gospel singing son of Detroit's Queen of Soul, Aretha Franklin, was attacked at a gas station near Plymouth and Evergreen on Monday night in Detroit. 

According to Gwendolyn Quinn, Aretha's spokeswoman, Eddie was attacked by three people – two men and a woman – and has undergone emergency surgery.  Quinn said Eddie's condition wasn't immediately known and Detroit Police said they were looking into the matter but had no further information.

This is very unfortunate.  Our prayers are with the Franklin family.

 

In other unfortunate news, reports of Denver Broncos Kenny McKinley in what authorities are calling an apparent suicide have surfaced. McKinley was found dead Monday afternoon in his apartment in Centennial, Colo., at 3:35 p.m. local time.  

Detectives believe the 23-year-old died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound. Local authorities were contacted by a female friend. Police are not saying if a suicide note was left.  And it is unclear everything that has been goign on in McKinley's life.

Team owner Pat Bowlen had this to say:

“Everyone with the Broncos is shocked and saddened by the loss of Kenny McKinley.  He was part of the Broncos’ family and will be greatly missed by our organization. My most heartfelt condolences go out to Kenny’s family and friends.”

Suicide is NEVER the answer.  Our condolences go out to the McKinley family as well.

Fanny is preparing to go on tour with Atlanta housewife Kandi and singer Eric Benet. The tour begins November 4 in Richmond, VA. Kandi tweeted last night, "I'm going on tour with my girl Fantasia in November! It’s gonna be so fun."

Fantasia also sat down with VIBE to discuss her new album, reality show, and summer drama.

 

VIBE: You’ve talked about your controversy so much over the last month, let’s put it to bed for a sec and talk about what else is new with you. You've started season 2 of your reality show and there are some big changes this season. What can viewers expect?

Fantasia: "You’ll see on this season of the show that most of my family has moved out. My mom and her husband got their own place, Teeny got his own place, he’s paying his own bills, it’s getting to be a whole lot better. Everybody is not relying on me for everything. Of course I still have to help out with some things, but that’s okay because the burden has been lifted on the family part."
 

VIBE: Witnessing some of the family issues you had in the first season I always wondered why you did the reality show.

Fantasia: "My main reason for doing the show was I wanted my family to see themselves. A lot of time you can talk and talk and it goes into one ear and out the other, but we caught it [our problems] all on camera and everybody was really to sit back and see themselves, it was like, 'Oh okay, I get it.' I was a little scared, because I didn’t want it to bring confusion between us or for them to to think I was trying to put them out there, but it went the way I needed it to go. We would watch the shows together when they aired"

 

VIBE: And did you always want to financially support your whole family?

Fantasia: "In the beginning I wanted to support everyone, because we’re such a tight family and we all started singing gospel together. And when I got blessed I wanted to bless them. That’s what happens with a lot of people who make it. When you’re coming from a family that don’t have nothing and struggle to get what they've got, you’re like I’m gonna bless my brother, my mother… And what happened was I created that monster. Once you start giving, giving, giving people just kick their feet up and say, ‘I know you got it.’ I had to put a stop to that, because I was standing in the way of their destinies."

 

VIBE: And now members of your family are independent financially and have their own careers...

Fantasia: "Teeny has an album coming out. He’s kind of crazy [laughs] but his ideas are really good. Now Rico is singing with T.I. and I’m very proud of all of them because back when we were kids these were all of the things we said we were gonna do. I want to do a gospel album with my whole family soon."
 

 

VIBE: Your third and latest album, Back To Me did very well its debut week on the charts. What are some of your favorite songs?

Fantasia: " I love all of them. 'Even Angels,' 'I’m Here' from The Color Purple—I don’t listen to it too much because it makes me cry. 'Bittersweet' is my baby too, but I really love all of them, I really do. Some of the songs on the album were recorded before I went thru this stuff. That’s when it got spiritual for me. Listening to 'Even Angels' coming out of the hospital and listening to the words, it was just spiritual. We took three years to do this album and it turned about to be a reflection of all I went thru. 'Teach Me' reminds me of Tina Turner, because I love Tina Turner. I liked how they recorded her albums. So for 'Move On Me' and 'Teach Me'— we recorded them live in the studio with the background singers and it gave me such a rush, I loved it."

 

VIBE: But you do realize with the timing of everything there are still people who think this was a trumped up publicity stunt to get sympathy for your side of the scandal, sell records or get more viewers for your show.

Fantasia: "I almost messed my kidneys up with my O.D. I had to have all these needles and IVs and now I have to go to the doctors regularly to check on my kidneys. I had to go to a home and meet with a lifecoach. And I have to continue with the lifecoach and speak with to him everyday on the road. I was on suicide watch at the hospital. [For those who think this was all a publicity stunt] the best way to answer that is that I was already getting publicity for the other situation [the alleged affair]. I was on Nancy Grace, CNN, every gospel station, every newspaper, every magazine, every newspaper. At the time I wanted to be away from all of the noise."

 

VIBE: And people also wonder after going thru all of that why didn’t you just take some time off.

Fantasia: "Guess what? I couldn’t afford to stay out of work right now even if I wanted to. My life right now is fighting my way out of debt that I’ve been in. But music is exactly what I need— it’s the place I go to let go of everything. A lot of people say when I perform I go someplace else and give it my all. And I tell them that’s where I release everything I go thru. When I get on the stage that’s where I let everything go."

 

Interesting. Fantasia's album has sold over 187,000 copies and is currently #11 on the Billboard Charts. Maybe her fiasco helped her out more than she thought.

*UPDATED WITH MUGSHOT* Here we go again.  NY Jets baller Braylon Edwards is in deep ish...again.  And this time he got popped for a DUI.

Braylon was initially pulled over early this morning at 5:15AM in NYC for riding dirty--and by riding dirty, we mean riding with illegaly tinted windows on his Range Rover. 

Cops smelled alcohol on his breath.  After taking the breathalyzer test, he registered a .16--twice the legal limit.

WOMP.

Here's what the Jets organization has to say about it today:

"We are very disappointed in Braylon's actions this morning. The Player Protect program is in place for our organization to prevent this situation. Braylon is aware of this program and showed poor judgment," the Jets said.

"We are reviewing the information with the league and will impose the appropriate disciplinary measures."

Braylon is currently in police custody and will be arraigned later today.

Braylon previously found himself in trouble last year while playing with the Cleveland Browns.  He copped an assault charge after getting sloppy drunk and having a bar fight with one of Lebron James' boys.  He was soon traded to the Jets.

Looks like changing cities hasn't really helped his drinking problem.  Do they not have curfews or some ish during the season?  Drinking and partying till 5am?  This won't be good....

L.A. Reid FIRED From Def Jam?!

Looks like that multi-million dollar deal L.A. Reid cut with rapper Shyne pushed the Def Jam board over the edge.  We hear he just got his pink slip yesterday.  News on Mr. Reid getting AXED when you read on...

It's been talked about for over a year now.  After Kevin Liles was "let go" last year from Atlantic, rumor had it that Chairman and CEO of Island Def Jam Music Group L.A. Reid would be next.

Our source inside the Def Jam offices tells us that Mr. Reid, who was responsible for signing Mariah Carey, Pink, Justin Bieber, Avril Lavigne, Toni Braxton, TLC, Usher, Ciara, and OutKast, copped his walking papers yesterday afternoon.

"Def Jam fired L.A. Reid," the source tells us.  "He got the boot from the Board of Execs yesterday."

Of course, the Def Jam folks are planning to keep the announcement very P.C.  They will likely put out a statement saying things were cordial and/or mutual.  But that's def not the case, according to our source.   Def Jam indeed did not renew his contract.  We're not privy to the details on the reasons behind the split.  But we do know lots of politricks were involved.

We also hear Sylvia Rhone, Executive VP at Def Jam's parent company Universal, is next on the chopping block if Kelly Rowland's next album doesn't do well.

So new blood will be riding in to Def Jam/Universal soon.  Who will it be....

 

 

SPOTTED: Diddy's OTHER Baby Mama Sarah Chapman Beaches It Up In Miami

Nicki Minaj is this month's COMPLEX magazine cover girl.  And she's dishing up the cream on toning down her sexuality...but still keeping her sexual edge, laughing at her haters, her new album, being the "boss" of her "empire", and having multiple personalities.

Complex: Everyone has this image of you as a cartoon character with outlandish wigs, but at our shoot today you were much more low-key.
Nicki Minaj: [Laughs.] Every woman is a character—but people need to see I'm a regular human. It's like you wear a pink wig and you're no longer human all of sudden. You're a thing. Like today [the photographer] was like, "Where is that Nicki Minaj smile?" But this shoot doesn't call for the Nicki Minaj smile. You guys wanted me subdued, so I'm gonna give you a different side. I'm not gonna pull a string and be like, "It's Barbie, bitch!"

There's been a lot of speculation about your sexuality in the press. Your verse on Usher's "Lil' Freak" adds to the buzz that you're bisexual.
Nicki Minaj: When I rap, it's just an extension of how I speak, and that's how I talk. If you don't like it, don't listen. I'm also not going to explain something just because I said it in a rap. Take what you want from it. [In the press] I didn't say [I don't like women]. I said I don't have sex with women. I don't have sex with men right now either. If [bisexual is] what they wanna call me, then fine.

 

So right now Nicki Minaj is celibate?
NM: Yes, and I encourage all my young Barbies to do the same. I just don't have time.

You've said in recent interviews that you want to tone down the sexual content in your music. What prompted that?
NM: On "My Chick Bad," I had to show people that I can spit a verse without sex or talking about how good I look. I'm actually timid when it comes to being overtly sexy, which is weird because in the beginning people thought of me like some freakin' porn star. Guys reference sex all the time in their raps—I can't even think of a record where Wayne doesn't talk about sex—but when a female does it, people start tuning out. Then this gay dude the other day told me, "I say to dudes, ‘Maybe it's time to put this pussy on your sideburns.'" I was crying laughing and I was like, "I can't take this shit out of my act." People live for that shit. [Laughs.] I just have to balance it a little bit.

 

Where do all your different voices come from?
NM: I have no idea. I think Wayne kind of influenced that. He has always been really carefree when he raps and I was like, "I don't have to stay in one cadence or stay in one tone when I rap—I can just do what I want."

But you've been saying in recent interviews that you might tone down the voices.
NM: Sometimes the shit I say is over people's heads and I feel like I need to dumb it down a bit so people can understand it. I think if I had said a lot of raps in a particular voice, people would go, "Yo, that shit was hard"—but when you change up your voice a little bit, they can't see past that. And they're lookin' at me like, "This bitch is stupid"—and I'm lookin' at them like, "No, bitch, you're stupid." [Laughs.]

So on your album and going forward, you're going to mellow out on the voices?
NM: I definitely made a conscious effort to tone the voices down a little bit.

Did the label or management talk to you about it at all?
NM: Again, I run my empire. Does that answer your question? No one tells me anything unless I ask their opinion. No one can make a decision for you. Not if you're the boss.

How hard has it been not to respond when people take shots?
NM: It's not hard when you're making a lot of money and everything you do is sold out, and people adore you and little kids are crying just to take a picture with you. I'm laughing all the way to the bank, just like Wayne said. Young Money is good.

Speaking of Young Money, did your labelmate Drake tell you he'd be mentioning wanting to marry you on his verse for "Miss Me" before you heard it?
NM: He told me he said something about me on a verse, but I didn't think it would be anything like that. He let me hear it for the first time when we did Jay's show at Madison Square Garden, the day before Wayne had to go to jail—that night he let me hear it on the headphones. But you know what else he told me he wrote for me? The Alicia Keys song "I'm Ready." I happen to love the song. I never told anyone that, I hope he won't get mad that I said that.

Alrighty then.  I'm dizzy from all this back and forth in different interviews with who she says she is and isn't.  Seems to change as much as her voices.  But hey...to each their own.  She ain't for everybody.  Whatever puts money in your accounts, multi-colored wigs on your head, and asses in concert seats.  Do you boo.

Big Boi will be featured on MTV’s “When I Was 17” airing this Saturday at 11 am/EST. We get to take a peek at what life was like for the Son of Chico Dusty aka Antwan “Big Boi” Patton when he was 17. Big Boi had some difficulties passing his driver’s test because he forgot the most important rule to driving: BUCKLE UP. He also talks about being fired from Footlocker for being accused of stealing and open mic nights with Andre 3000.
"When I was 17 years old, I went to go [take] my driver's license test," he laughed. "I was so worried about trying to parallel park. I was always trying to slide this way, slide that way. I'm so nervous about that, I get in the car, I'm driving and the man's like, 'Well, you did great and everything, you can parallel park, but you didn't put on your seatbelt, so you failed.' I was like, 'Damn.' "

The folks over at Radar Online grabbed up some flicks of the newlywed and expecting couple as they hit The Palms in Vegas for dinner:

The couple, who got married about a year ago, are expecting a baby boy.  It'll be Mike's 8th kiddie.  And for all the hardships Mike and his fam have gone through over the past few years, we're sure he's super happy about his new son.  Congrats to the couple!
