‘True Blood’s Joe Manganiello Does ‘Muscle & Fitness’ Magazine

Posted: 19 Jun 2011 02:01 PM PDT

We are just one week away from the season 4 premiere of True Blood on HBO and to remind you just how HOT the show is, let me present to you photos of Joe Manganiello (who plays the hottie werewolf Alcide on the show) on the cover and in the pages of Muscle & Fitness magazine. Now M&F mag has absolutely nothing at all to do with True Blood but the mag features Manganiello naked from the waist up and, trust me, it’s a sight to behold. Check out below Joe‘s Muscle & Fitness cover, some excerpts from his coverstory and some photos from his workout photospread.

When producers tapped Joe Manganiello for the role of Alcide Herveaux, an Alabama contractor who happens to be a werewolf, the 6’5″ actor had three months to prepare before filming. Since the Mt. Lebanon, PA, native laid the foundation for his current Hollywood success in the weight room, Manganiello was more than up for the challenge. As one of the few actors working in Hollywood with a physique worthy of an action star, the response from his female fans keeps him motivated. “I had a friend of mine call me and tell me that it was a girl's birthday in his office, and they got her a cake with my picture on it. A year ago I wasn't on anybody's cake. It makes me feel really good, and it makes me want to work even harder from a fitness standpoint." "When I first got Joe he was about 240 pounds," says Ron Mathews, Manganiello's trainer, "He was trying to get bigger to look bigger, but in my experience, when you're really cut, you look bigger on film. When you're bigger but a little less cut, you just look fat." According to Mathews, Manganiello already exhibited a "psychopathic dedication" in the weight room. His client also brought a strong physical background into the gym. Manganiello played football and basketball in high school, and had made the Junior Olympic team for indoor volleyball. At 13 he started hitting the iron, guided by a high school teacher well versed in weight training. None of this, however, prepared the actor for the relentless painstorm Mathews had in mind. "Before me, Joe was doing a typical guy workout," says Mathews. "He'd do a set of bench, talk with his friends, do another set of bench, and pyramid up. I added in plyometrics and kept his heart rate at 160 and above for at least 50 of our 60 minutes together" … "I'm 220 pounds on the nose," says Manganiello. "Funny thing is, everyone keeps saying, 'How much weight did you lose? You look so much thinner!' But all my measurements have gone up. My waist is two inches smaller, but my shoulders, arms, and chest have all gone up. That's how I know it's working."

Muscle & Fitness shares the work out that Manganiello uses to stay in peak condition:

WORKOUT 1
(8:30–9:30 a.m.)
ONE HOUR OF EASY CARDIO FIRST THING IN THE MORNING ON AN EMPTY STOMACH

WORKOUT 2
(11:00 a.m.)
CHEST AND LEGS

SUPERSET 1
SQUAT 8-12 REPS
BENCH PRESS 8-12 REPS
LATERAL BOUNDING 10-40 SECONDS

SUPERSET 2
SMITH MACHINE LUNGE 8-12 REPS
DUMBBELL FLYE 8-12 REPS
STEP-UP JUMP 10-40 SECONDS

SUPERSET 3
ONE-LEG RDL 8-12 REPS
PLYOMETRIC PUSH-UP 8-12 REPS
LUNGE JUMP 10-40 SECONDS

SUPERSET 4
LEG EXTENSION 8-12 REPS
CABLE FLYE 8-12 REPS
TRAVELING PUSH-UP 10-40 SECONDS

TRAVELING PUSH-UP
Assume a basic push-up position, with either a box or medicine ball under your chest. Pivoting to the left, place your right hand on the ball and perform a push-up. As you come up, pivot to the right, place your left hand on the ball and your right hand on the ground, and do a push-up. Switch hands with every rep so you travel back and forth over the ball.

STEP-UP JUMP
Place your right foot on a bench or plyo box and leave your left foot on the ground. pushing off with your right foot, explode upward and land on top of the bench. Switch feet every rep.

LUNGE JUMPS
Go down to a lunge and explode upward into a jump. In the air, quickly scissor your legs so your rear leg is now in front. Land softly, descend into another lunge and repeat.

LATERAL BOUNDING
This is a side-to-side explosive movement that looks like speed skating. Stand in an athletic position (knees slightly bent, weight on the balls of your feet) and explode to the right, landing in a slight crouch with most of your weight on your right foot. Continue catching and pushing off of each outside leg. Do not move forward at all.

Erm … yeah … that sounds like a LOT of work. I don’t think that I’ll be lookin’ like Joe Manganiello anytime soon but as long as he keeps showing off the fruits of his labor, I think I’ll just enjoy from afar. Homie looks SICK in this magazine feature. I can’t wait to see this hot bod in action when the fourth season of True Blood premieres on HBO next Sunday night :)

Watch: ‘The Muppets’ Release A Full Length Movie Trailer

Posted: 19 Jun 2011 01:00 PM PDT

After releasing 3 parody movie trailers (which you can see HERE, HERE and HERE), The Muppets movie — due out at Thanksgiving — has finally released a full length “official” trailer. Despite the fact that this fourth trailer is not a parody, it is still very funny … very cute … and very much The Muppets. Check it out in full below.

Oh man … this movie is going to be amazing. As much as I enjoyed the parody trailers we’ve seen thus far, this newest trailer is the definitive Muppets trailer released yet. It is very obvious to me that great pains were taken to ensure that this new Muppets movie stays as true as possible to the Muppets legacy. I really miss the days when The Muppet Show was on TV. I really believe that this new Muppets movie will bring back some of the magic that we’ve been missing for a very long time now ;) LOVE THIS TRAILER!!

Romeo Beckham Shows Off His Arm Sleeve Of Tattoos, Just Like Daddy Beckham

Posted: 19 Jun 2011 12:00 PM PDT

Today, in honor of Father’s Day, I have a couple of really cute photos to share of one of our fave celeb dads David Beckham and his middle son Romeo James. At a soccer training session this week, Romeo showed off an arm sleeve of temporary tattoos in an obvious nod to his dad’s love of tattoos. It would seem that the apple really doesn’t fall far from the tree. Check out the photos below.

Every little boy looks up to their father and try to copy some of the things they do. And Romeo Beckham is no exception as he showed off some tattoos on his left arm. But his mother Victoria can breathe a sigh of relief as they were only temporary transfers – although he may opt for the real thing when he’s older. Romeo was snapped with the transfers as he kicked a ball around with his brother Cruz, five, and father David, who showed off his real tattoos as they played in Los Angeles. Beckham, 36, has about 20 tattoos on his body including a guardian angel between his shoulders blades and both arms are covered. And recently he revealed that his sons, including 12-year-old Brooklyn, want real tattoos some day. He said: ‘One of them asked me, “How old do I have to be before I get my first tattoo?” ‘I was like, “A lot older than you are now”.’ The family will be at home in LA to celebrate Father’s Day today. David said yesterday: ‘Tomorrow is Father’s Day and I’ll be with my family at our home in LA enjoying time together and looking forward to the arrival of our baby girl in just a few weeks. ‘Being a parent is very rewarding but as mums and dads everywhere know all too well, having kids certainly keeps you on your toes.’ In a couple of weeks time, the Beckham boys will be welcoming a baby sister to their family when Victoria, 37, gives birth to her third child by caesarian on July 4. The family are planning to relocate to a beachfront house in Malibu in time for the arrival of the little girl.

Awww … it’s very clear that the Beckham boys love and look up to their father. And yes, the boys will be getting real tattoos as soon as they are old enough, believe that. I’m certain that this Father’s Day will be a very special one for Daddy Becks … it will be his last Father’s Day with only his sons before his firstborn daughter comes into the world next month. Let’s send all our love to Becks and to all the loving daddies out there who are celebrating Father’s Day today :D

Princess Zakiya Is Becoming A Little Queen

Posted: 19 Jun 2011 11:00 AM PDT

Yesterday was a very fun, very full day. Yesterday afternoon, after Sarah, David and I ran around taking care of a few errands, we met up with Mark and made our way to downtown Royal Oak, MI for lunch at my fave sushi restaurant in the world — Little Tree. After we supped until we were stuffed, we hung out for a bit on Main St. and did a big of shopping at Incognito. Yesterday evening, we got to hang out with Tracey and my goddaughter Zakiya who is growing into a brilliant young lady. Last night, Sarah hosted a small get together of friends … ’twas a very, very fun day.

These are just some of the photos that I took with Princess Zakiya. It’s insane to me how much she grows every time I see her. The girl can already read and write better than David! That’s my girl. After Z had to run off to a sleep over, the real party got underway. Reggie, Tara, Agnes, Mike G., Sherri and her son Kyle came over to hang out … which meant we hovered around the dinner table eating, talking and sharing embarrassing stories. The party may not have been one of our usual ragers but it was a lot of fun. It’s always so nice to come home to Detroit and reconnect with my loved ones here. I seriously know the best people in the world … and I love them all :)

This afternoon, David and I are taking my parents out for Father’s Day Brunch before we return home to SoCal later tonight. My Detroit trips are always so short but they are always very, very fun. I hope all y’all are having a GREAT FATHER’S DAY today!!! Happy Sunday!!

‘Runaway Bride’ Crystal Harris Spends Her Canceled Wedding Day In Las Vegas

Posted: 19 Jun 2011 09:00 AM PDT

Yesterday, Saturday June 18, was supposed to be the day that Playboy playmate Crystal Harris was supposed to get married to Playboy mogul Hugh Hefner. Instead, after calling off the wedding earlier in the week, Harris made her way to Las Vegas, NV on what was supposed to be her wedding day to hang out at a pool party with … Heidi Montag. That’s right, folks, in a seeming attempt to cement herself as a Z-List nobody, Crystal traded in a life with Hefner to hang out with likes of Montag.

She was supposed to be walking down the aisle at the Playboy Mansion [Saturday], but Crystal Harris displayed not even the slightest hint of regret at dumping Hugh Hefner as she partied in the Las Vegas sunshine [instead]. In fact, the laughing 25-year-old chose to openly mock Hefner, 85, by posing up with her feet dangling in the pool to pore over the latest edition of the jilted man’s iconic magazine with reality star, Heidi Montag, who was hosting the Wet Republic event at the Hard Rock Hotel. Wearing a sexy black bikini and sheer leopard-print tunic rather than her wedding gown, the blonde – who had promised today would be ‘the most romantic wedding ever,’ seemed to revel in flaunting the magazine – which is yet another source of embarrassment for Hefner, as she is the covergirl. The current edition of Playboy, excruciatingly for Hefner, features Harris under the tagline ‘Introducing Mrs Crystal Hefner’. The magazine mogul tried to save face about being dumped just a few days before the wedding by labeling the magazines with a large sticker saying ‘Runaway Bride’. ‘Recent events call for a special sticker on the July cover. Look for it on newsstands,’ Hefner said on Twitter. A big red sticker announcing ‘Runaway Bride In This Issue!’ covers most of Harris’ bottom half. Still visible is Hefner’s beloved cocker spaniel, which Harris took with her after the split. She is wearing his trademark sailor’s cap and smoking jacket, and holding a pipe. A spokeswoman said the sticker would appear only on newsstand copies since issues have already been mailed to subscribers, and Crystal’s is obviously one that escaped.

While Crystal was hanging with Heidi in Vegas, I assume Hefner was finding consolation with his new girlfriends (once again) Karissa and Kristina Shannon, who we learned yesterday have already moved back into the Playboy Mansion to be with Hugh during his time of need and heartbreak. Crystal has made it clear that she now wants to focus on her music career but I don’t think she is doing herself any favors by choosing to hang out with Heidi Montag. In fact, this hang out session is likely to benefit Heidi (who no one even talks about or pays attention to anymore) than it will benefit Crystal. Still, I wish her the best of luck. And to Hugh, enjoy your 20-something twins!

Britney Spears Attends Sean Preston’s Graduation

Posted: 19 Jun 2011 08:00 AM PDT

Pop Queen Britney Spears, who just kicked off her Femme Fatale Tour in Sacramento, CA this past Thursday, took a break from her touring plans to make her way back to LA on Friday to attend a graduation ceremony for her eldest son Sean Preston. In between her concert performances on Thursday (in Sacramento, CA) and on Saturday (in San Jose, CA), proud mom Britney made sure to be home in LA to see her son graduate from kindergarten!

According to BreathHeavy.com, our dear Britney was joined at Sean P‘s graduation ceremony at his school by her boyfriend Jason Trawick and her parents Lynne and Jamie Spears. As I understand it, Sean‘s father Kevin Federline and his fiancée Victoria Prince were also in attendence at the ceremony. While I’m certain Britney is proud of the fantastic concert tour she put together for her fans, I’m sure nothing compares to the pride she feels at watching her son graduate from kindergarten. It’s just too damn cute to think about. Much love and congrats goes out to little Sean Preston this weekend … and to his proud family and friends ;)

Saxophonist Clarence Clemons Passes Away At 69

Posted: 19 Jun 2011 07:00 AM PDT

Clarence Clemons, the man known as the Big Man with the Big Horn who was a member of Bruce Springsteen‘s E Street Band, passed away yesterday due to complications from a stroke that he suffered earlier in the week. As I understand it, Clemons had been suffering from various medical ailments in recent years and had to undergo surgery after he suffered a stroke this week. Unfortunately, Clemons didn’t survive … and passed away yesterday.

Saxophonist Clarence Clemons, an indispensable part of Bruce Springsteen’s E Street Band both for his full-throttle tenor sax work and his larger-than-life onstage persona as “the Big Man,” died Saturday. He was 69. Clemons, who put his stamp on such Springsteen staples as “Born to Run,” “Jungleland” and “Rosalita,” died in a Palm Beach, Fla., hospital of complications from a massive stroke he suffered June 12 at his Florida home, a spokeswoman for Springsteen and the E Street Band said. “Clarence lived a wonderful life. He carried within him a love of people that made them love him. He created a wondrous and extended family,” Springsteen said in a statement Saturday. “He was my great friend, my partner and with Clarence at my side, my band and I were able to tell a story far deeper than those simply contained in our music. His life, his memory, and his love will live on in that story and in our band.” Clemons’ career was inextricably linked to his decades playing alongside Springsteen, but he also became an in-demand player and presence for other musicians including Jackson Browne, Ringo Starr, Aretha Franklin … But every musical road Clemons traveled always seemed to lead back to E Street. “Every time we get together, it’s all brand-new,” Clemons told the Associated Press last year. “Every time, Bruce comes back with something new and something different. I keep wondering: How high can he take it? … How many times can he be reborn? I just want to keep on living so I can keep seeing the change” … Clemons in recent years had to contend with health issues including two hip replacements, and knee and back surgeries. In the ’70s he had a reputation as a rock ‘n’ roll party animal, but in later years he adopted a healthier lifestyle, exploring Eastern philosophies, exercising regularly and meditating daily. Still, his ailments restricted him onstage during the physically grueling E Street Band shows. In 2009 he published his autobiography, “Big Man: Real Life & Tall Tales,” in which he addressed the pain he felt when Springsteen put the band on hold — not knowing at the time whether they’d ever play together again. He also wrote about the sense of acceptance he eventually developed about his role in one of rock’s most celebrated groups. “It’s fine for me to be known as part of the E Street Band,” he told the New York Daily News. “We all wonder what we’re here to do. Something got me into a band with Bruce. It’s where I belong.” Survivors include his fifth wife, Victoria, and four sons.

Back in the 80′s, saxophone music was integral to both rock and pop music … in fact, it was the influence of Clarence Clemons that inspired me to play saxophone in school. I remember seeing Clarence rock the sax in a Bruce Springsteen video and I thought, “I wanna do that!” Altho many of you young’ns may not know who Clarence Clemons is (or may have just heard his name for the first time because he is featured on Lady Gaga‘s new single The Edge of Glory), I can assure you … the music world lost a legend with his passing. My deepest condolences go out to the Clemons family. Rest well, Big Man. Thank you for your gift of music … they are very lucky to have you and your sax with them in Heaven.
