17 Movies That Probably Shouldn’t Have Been Made into Broadway Musicals

Posted: 04 Jun 2011 10:20 AM PDT

On Wednesday, the New York Times reported that a musical based off of Rocky is in the works, with plans for it to hit Broadway in 2013. My immediate reaction (besides “That’s a TERRIBLE IDEA!”) was this: What is up with all of the musicals being based off of movies these days? Are there truly no original stories left? Or are the people who write Broadway just getting lazy? Because Rocky is far from the only movie to get the Broadway treatment. There have been many, and while some, like The Producers, have in fact ended up being wonderful, the vast majority of them are either bad, or– even worse– simply mediocre. Here’s a look at 17 movies that probably shouldn’t have attempted to take on Broadway.

Snap This: ‘The Runaways’ Starring Wonder Woman as Joan Jett

Posted: 04 Jun 2011 08:45 AM PDT

Artist Cliff Chiang doodled this little tidbit after watching The Runaways. I don’t know if I can speak for anyone else, but I’d much rather watch Wonder Woman play Joan Jett than Kristen Stewart. Backing up her and her Guitar of Truth are Black Canary as Cherie Currie (Dakota Fanning in the movie), Zatanna as a bassist (The Mary Sue points out that there are six possibilities for who she could be), and Batgirl as Sandy West (Stella Maeve). Anyone got any theories about what song they might be playing (besides “Bad Reputation”)? Tell us in the comments!

13 Zombified Individuals Who Will Eat Your Brains

Posted: 04 Jun 2011 07:15 AM PDT

And by “zombified,” I mean that these characters weren’t originally zombies; however, due to some extremely creative fans and/or franchise writers and artists, they have become so, resulting in much hilarity. Just how much hilarity, you ask? Read on to find out! Just make sure to stand well back; they do have an unfortunate taste for gray matter.

Jenna Jameson Is Being Sued for Going to Perez Hilton’s Birthday Party

Posted: 03 Jun 2011 05:39 PM PDT

Two Illinois theaters are suing Jenna Jameson for failing to show at press appearances for her movie Zombie Strippers. (Seriously.) Jenna claimed that she had to miss the appearances – that she was being paid for – because she was sick, but the very same night she was photographed hanging out at Perez Hilton‘s birthday party in Los Angeles. In fact, this photo of Jenna was taken at that party! I got it from WENN, the photo service we use here at Crushable. It took me about four seconds to search for it. Oh, and here’s the photo again in our recap of the event.

Jenna, didn’t anyone ever teach you how to call in sick to work? Even if you’re faking sick so you can go to the beach, you a) make sure there are no pictures and b) if there are pictures, make sure they don’t end up on the internet where people can see them. Remember the story of Kevin Colvin? He lied to his boss about missing work and then posted pictures of himself at a costume party on Facebook, where his boss could see them. And have you ever heard of Perez Hilton doing something that wasn’t being photographed and/or televised?

If those two Illinois theaters want to pay me ten grand plus airfare to come hang out and sign copies of my book, I’m there, even if I actually get sick.

Has the School Shooting (As Seen in ‘Beautiful Boy’) Become a Genre in Pop Culture?

Posted: 03 Jun 2011 03:36 PM PDT

The 1999 Columbine massacre was by no means the first school shooting in the United States, but it has become iconic due to the brutality of the event and how Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold were supposedly influenced by violent video games. Now, the “school shooting” has become a TV plotline, a film tragedy, and the subject of multiple songs. With the release of the drama Beautiful Boy — and We Need to Talk About Kevin wowing audiences at Cannes — we look at which details and tropes crop up again and again in pop culture.

The Shooter is Bullied

This has to be a blanket statement, because pop culture creators seem to be unable to fathom that any other high school clique could be so tormented as to wish death on his/her classmates. The real and fictional shooters are beaten up and taunted about their weight, sexual orientation, social awkwardness, and every other detail that their cruel classmates can seize upon. This fact has even become an assumption for commentary: In the Buffy the Vampire Slayer episode “Earshot,” because nerdy Johnathan has a gun, we immediately believe that he plans on picking off the popular kids. (The fact that he’s holed up in the clock tower supports the theory.)

The Parents Had No Idea

A lot of teen shows don’t feature parent characters, so when Rick on Degrassi or Jimmy on One Tree Hill decides to bring a gun to school, we don’t see Mom and Dad’s reactions. Beautiful Boy follows two parents (Maria Bello and Michael Sheen) struggling to understand what made their son (Red State‘s Kyle Gallner) so unhappy and dealing with the guilt and blame from the other victims’ parents and the media.

Setting Is Significant

Most movies seem to adopt the two central locations at Columbine for their own climactic scenes: The cafeteria (Elephant) and the library (One Tree Hill). Also used are classrooms (One Tree Hill), hallways (Degrassi), bathrooms (The Life Before Her Eyes), or the locker room (Ninteen Minutes).

The Shooter Dies

In most stories the kid kills him/herself — which was his plan all along, but only after taking down his abusers. Dylan Klebold and Eric Harris both committed suicide in the Columbine library; the same was the case for the One Tree Hill episode “With Tired Eyes, Tired Minds, Tired Souls, We Slept,” where shooter Jimmy Edwards kills himself out of true remorse in the hallway. In the indie film Home Room, police kill the shooter in a confrontation. Elephant reflects Columbine by having two shooters, but one kills the other without any real explanation.

Alternate Titles for Coldplay’s New Single ‘Every Teardrop Is a Waterfall’

Posted: 03 Jun 2011 02:38 PM PDT

Coldplay’s new single, “Every Teardrop Is a Waterfall,” just hit the interwebs today. Chris Martin and the gang are evidently still rocking out the sound they debuted on “Viva La Vida,” but the song title is just so horrifically cheesy I can’t get past it. So I used this random title generator to help them come up with some catchier, more radio-friendly titles.

  • The Birch of the Husband
I bet Gwyneth could use that as a GOOP headline, too!
  • Crying of Storms
It’s still about crying, but kind of tougher.
  • Splintered Witches
Doesn’t really mean anything, but sounds deep. In other words: perfect.
  • Ready to Start
Well, Arcade Fire won a Grammy last year, so ripping them off might not be the worst idea.
  • Dwindling Dreamer
My interest in this song keeps dwindling as it goes on.
  • The Flying of the Edge
I like to think that The Edge would not get anywhere near this song.

Video Plus Poll: Did the Fox News Ticker Really Get Hacked?

Posted: 03 Jun 2011 01:51 PM PDT

Late on Monday, April 30, a video appeared on YouTube from a person who claims to have hacked the Fox News ticker on 6th Avenue in New York. The message reads:

WE ARE BEING LIED TO. RIGHTWINGERS ARE DESTROYING THE MIDDLE CLASS AND TRYING TO KILL OUR UNIONS. THE COUNTRY IS NOT BROKE. WE ARE THE RICHEST COUNTRY IN THE WORLD. USA IS TWICE AS RICH AS CHINA. OUR ECONOMY IS BIGGER THAN MOST OF EUROPE COMBINED. WE ARE NOT BROKE. WE ARE BEING LIED TO. WE WILL RISE UP. WE WILL FIGHT BACK. WE WILL SPREAD THE TRUTH.

And of course, the question that immediately comes to mind is: Is this a hoax? Check out the video below and take a look for yourselves:

Now, I don’t know about you guys, but my gut reaction is that it’s viral marketing of some kind. Remember that story back in March about the guy who supposedly managed to hack the digital displays in Times Square using only an iPhone, a weather balloon, a transmitter, and something called a “video repeater?” Yep, that one was a hoax created by the company ThinkModo as a viral ad campaign for the movie Limitless. Granted, the Fox News ticker stunt has a much more serious bent to it due to its strong political message– but at the same time, the whole “WE WILL RISE UP. WE WILL FIGHT BACK” thing sounds rather like something out of a movie. Plus, the little pop-up instructing us to go to june23rd.org sounds like exactly the sort of thing viral marketing likes to do. I can’t help but think that on June 23, whatever “all” is going to be “revealed” will be a trailer for a movie or something.

Maybe I’m wrong. If I am, come June 23, I’ll gladly eat my words, and because I am an unapologetic, raging liberal, I applaud you, hackers, for going after the travesty that is Fox News. Until then, though, I remain skeptical (sorry; we live in a world where viral marketing is the norm). What do you guys think? Did the Fox News ticker really get hacked, or is this just some sort of publicity stunt?

Listen to Nicola Roberts’ Awesome Song ‘Beat of My Drum’

I think we’ve got a contender for anthem of the summer, y’all. The latest single from Nicola Roberts, a UK pop singer who was formerly in Cheryl Cole‘s band Girls Aloud, is threatening to invade our American shores. This song is dancey, upbeat and awesome. We can’t wait to hear it at rooftop parties all summer long.

January Jones Wears More Clothing in ‘X-Men: First Class’ Than in Her Versace Ads

Posted: 03 Jun 2011 01:15 PM PDT

When the first preview images for X-Men: First Class were released, people slammed January Jones‘ character Emma Frost for wearing way too revealing outfits: Diamond-encrusted bras and thigh highs, rubber catsuits, poofy capes over lingerie… The character of Frost has long gotten flak for using her sexuality in the name of evil, with a debate raging over whether she was “made” to be a slut.

Some of that criticism has bled over into Jones’ portrayal of her in the ’60s-era prequel; one commenter pointed out that by trading Frost’s bustier for a bra, Jones lacks the villain’s sophistication and just looks slutty. But what we’ve come to realize, having seen the movie, is that she’s stripped all the way down for fashion ads — so even though she looks like a bad Bond girl in the movie, at least she’s covered up.
